to collect donations for Japan Texas Woman’s University dance major Annabelle Chen decided to make the university’s up-and-coming dance concert mean a little more. Chen, a native of Taiwan, approached TWU faculty with a suggestion to collect donations for Japanese earthquake and tsunami survivors during the Dance UpClose concert, which showcases new dance work. Chen came to the U.S. when she was 10 years old and has a deep appreciation for Japan and its culture. Chen and two representatives from the Denton office of the American Red Cross will collect donations at all of the performances. Performances are at 4 p.m. today, and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the TWU Dance Studio Theatre in the Dance and Gymnastics Laboratory on Bell Avenue. ’80s reign at Hailey’s for 7 years T
hursday nights at Hailey’s Club have been all about the shiny plastic riffs, smooth synths and computer-generated beats of the 1980s for seven years. Denton’s busiest DJ, Yeahdef, figures the best way to celebrate is to spin the greats of the age tonight in a sort of anniversary blitz. The guy behind the turntable — a.k.a. Joey Liechty — said he picked up where some of his peers left off. Denton musician and booking agent Glen Farris started the weekly ’80s dance night in 2004. Then DJ G took the reins. “DJ G is a walking sonic library from the ’80s and took that little spark that Glen kicked off and fed the flame into the longest, most successful weekly DJ party ever in Denton,” Liechty said. “Very skilled dude. He left New Year’s 2010, and I’ve been holding it down since then.” So how does a DJ plan for a busy dance floor? Wearing the Yeahdef trucker hat, Liechty said it’s a mix of organization and improvisation. “I have several ’80s playlists arranged by genre. I just select music that I like — and for the most part, that keeps people dancing,” Liechty said. “Every once and a while, I’ll get a request — and I will usually drop those throughout the night, unless it’s just

dance floor kryptonite.” If you drop by the club tonight, you could hear the icons of ’80s radio — Madonna, Prince, Culture Club and Wham. Liechty said he also drops other 1980s acts into his mix — Scritti Politti, Tango, Kajagoogoo, the Beastie Boys, XTC and BB&Q Band. Patrons do seem to have a favorite, Liechty said. “People really like ‘Thriller.’ They never get tired of that and ‘Billie Jean.’ I also get a lot of requests for Madonna and ‘The Safety Dance,’” he said. “It’s not a guaranteed thing that I will always play these certain tracks each Thursday, but more often than not, you will see people getting down to Michael Jackson.” Liechty said he sees some
patrons tipping a hat to the fashion of the era, wearing what he calls “early goth” attire, polka dots or neon colors. But for the most part, patrons are there to shake it on the dance floor. The music appeals to a wide demographic, and Liechty can get them all moving. “Last week I had a lady in there celebrating her 40th with a 30-something friend,” he said. “They got down, dancing on the floor with the college kids, and had a great time. “At this point, the music has been around for more than 30 years. It appeals to so many groups. I think the oldest I’ve seen in there was a dude about 80 years old. This old man owned the dance floor during ‘Hit Me With

ou can’t help but tap a toe to the music of the Naples, Fla., quartet Fake Problems. The melodies are as sweet and infectious as any Top 40 pop song. The rhythm section blissfully embraces the rock ethos that made the Ramones into icons. Basically, Fake Problems transcends the whining drone of mall rock, but doesn’t pretend to be anything other than the pop-infused “beach punk it declares itself to be. The band comes through Denton on Sunday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. The band’s latest release from Side One Dummy Records, Real Ghosts Caught on Tape, doesn’t have a single turkey on it. Each track feels effortlessly tuneful without selling out. Guitarist and vocalist Chris Farren said Real Ghosts, which came out in September, is a departure for the band from its previous recording, It’s Great to Be Alive. “We went so big on It’s Great to Be Alive. We had a lot of orchestration, Farren said. “We didn’t want to go so grandiose sound-wise on the next project. It was a challenge. “It put us into the situation where we had to be writing really well-put-together songs, and when we practiced and got

into the studio, we couldn’t just say that ‘Oh, this doesn’t sound quite right, but we can make that right and fill it in with the orchestration.’ We had to make sure it was right. On “Soulless, the rhythm section hearkens back to Diana Ross’ “Can’t Hurry Love while Farren propels his boyish, rasping tenor through a bouncing song about being reanimated by love. In “ADT, Farren longs for some diversion from garden-variety boredom and loneliness. In “Songs for Teenagers,

Farren passes on the positivethinking pap that adults give to their unpredictable teenagers, only he exposes it: “Looking for drugs in all the wrong places/ Felt a change comin’ but I couldn’t face it/Tried to keep my cool when I finally made it home/Had a bloodshot excuse for every lie told/It’s all right, it’s OK ‌â€? Real Ghosts is shot through with the stirrings of adolescence, something Farren said makes sense to him. “Yeah, I would definitely say that when you are a teenager, you definitely have more passion for everything,â€? he said. “What songwriters try to do is recapture some of those feelings. Music helps us recapture those feelings.â€? There is a sadder-but-wiser feeling throughout the record,
too. “The title of the record is about the expectations you have growing up, Farren said. “When you’re a kid, you have a certain idea of how your life is going to turn out, and as you get older, you realize things are going to be different. Whenever you see something that says ‘real ghosts caught on tape,’ you always take a look at it, even though you know you aren’t going to see what you think you’re going to see. — Lucinda Breeding

n Cities Can Wait, Denton indie-pop outfit the Demigs conducts a fearless and searching moral inventory of singer-guitarist Chris Demiglio’s heart. By the time we get to the fade-out of the final track, “Slum Alaska,” a certain truth is under the spotlight. The Buddhists were right, brother. Life is unsatisfactory. The best you can do is mine meaning from life with your bare hands. Oh, and don’t let the jerks wear you down. The Demigs debuted on the Denton music scene in 2007 with Yardling. The debut album got a warm reception from regional rock critics, but didn’t catch on with the local music fanboys and girls. The band released its second effort this month. With Cities Can Wait, the Demigs have a moody record narrated by a voice that seems both frustrated by the confines of polite society and bored by culturally approved coping methods. “Really, this record was embellishing on the sound we’d already created,” Demiglio said just before taking the stage at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios for a recent CD release party. “We wanted to see if we could mix the record well, and engineer well with the equipment at our disposal.” Back in the days when the Demigs were promoting Yardling, Mark Demiglio was on drums, Annie Ramage on guitar and vocals, and Brad Row on bass. Yardling proved to be a difficult record to make, with the musicians slipping into studios to record at all hours of the day and night. By the time Demiglio was ready to put the songs he was developing on tracks, he had assembled new personnel. Sid Bledsoe is the bassist, Alex

Hastings is on guitar, and Guyton Sanders is the drummer. Together, they turned Cities Can Wait into a respectable indie-pop album — with an emphasis on indie. The group had also built a recording studio and called in favors from friends to get the best sound possible. “It’s not too polished, it’s not too raw,” Demiglio said. “All of us were obsessed with the music on this one.” Demiglio is utterly unapologetic about the radio-readiness of Cities Can Wait. It’s ripe for the The Local Show on “The Edge” KDGE-FM (102.1), and it’s already been spun on KKXT-FM (91.7). “That was weird,” Demiglio said. “It was so weird to hear yourself on the radio through the phone. It was great though.” It’s a little too indie for the Top 40 stations that deal in hip-hop and club music, but the material on Cities Can Wait could fit into any format friendly to the Toadies or Coldplay. Say what you must, Demiglio said. He writes pop music. “Everyone starts to go their own way when you start talking about pop music. It’s pop. I call a spade a spade. If you call it what it is, you get pop from this record.” Sanders isn’t sure he agrees. “I never really considered what we do pop. Nowadays,

there is a fine line between pop and rock. I mean, I don’t play pop rhythms. I’m a rock drummer. ‘Black Valley Fight’ is not what I consider a pop song. There’s this chaotic thing there in that song. That’s what you do in rock.” “You write catchy melodies,” Hastings said to Demiglio. “Catchy melodies are what pop music is. It’s not like pop music is only this one thing, this one sound.” Sanders agreed. “That thin line between pop and rock, where it is, depends on who you are,” Sanders said. Demiglio isn’t afraid to gaze at his shoes in songs like “Minx” or “Lowly,” letting the reverb fuzz out the guitars and making room for some soulful piano work by contributor Kevin Thornton. In the album’s standout track, “Sophisticates & Sedatives,” Demiglio trots out some “bah-bah-bahs,” (that’s right, the No. 1 vocal beat-keeper employed by the Partridge Family) set to a guitar line that ambles easily along and keeps the vocals from turning saccharine. Demiglio, the chief songwriter of the band, is a deft writer as it turns out. In

“Sophisticates & Sedatives,” Demiglio exposes the murky current beneath suburban America with the lyrics: “Third-class musicians with a secondhand religion/were first on the scene to announce another cataclysm.” The song is set to a sunny, up-tempo melody — a poetic contrast to the sober lyrics. Musically and lyrically, Demiglio searches himself as an Everyman, a guy trying to make the best of what he has with what he’s got. On “Gusto,” he observes a universal yen for more control and less cynicism. “The ballroom is packed/yeah, we’re bringing the guillotine back/I shouldn’t spell it out for her/But I know we go out together/go like thieves together.” “Slum, Alaska” is insistent and ethereal, and would be utterly at home on Denton soloist Robert Gomez’s Pine Sticks and Phosphorous. In “Black Valley Fight,” the band assumes the tough-guy posture of a protagonist who’s had enough. Call it a more American flavor of the rage found in Muse’s “Uprising.” Demiglio sings: “This is the time when we show aggression/if anyone is thinking of messing/with the likes of us … Shout and simmer/Steep in piss and vinegar/I don’t think there’s a docket/at the end of
this life.” In other words, scrap for your reward here on Earth, enjoy the spoils you win by your own hustle and guile. Demiglio doesn’t push his voice to be more than it is, and the result is a tenor reminiscent of Michael Stipe on the softer stuff, and like the Pixies’ Black Francis on the harder rock. Denton musician Chris Wilder gets some of the engineering credit from the band. He worked with the band on Yardling, too. “I think the songs are better. The recording is better. They took their time,” Wilder said. “I think they’re getting poppier. They are doing catchy melodies and catchy hooks. I like that about what they’re doing. It’s a good vocal melody, you know? Don’t be afraid to put a harmony on there.” Pianist Kevin Thornton said he was recruited to play keyboards by Hastings. “I think what they wanted from me on this record was piano work that’s like Nicky Hopkins from the Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty. I tried not to overplay. For a rock band, they didn’t need Bob Seger. They wanted something different.” Thornton said the band stretched its resources. “They have limited resources, you know? They were recording on a budget, like a lot of people do around here,” Thornton said.
“Denton has two things: It has a culture — and that goes beyond art and music — ... and they’ve got talent here. These guys made use of both. I think it went pretty well.” Brandon Van Noy helped record the album and guided Demiglio through the computer software. “Yardling was the reason I got involved,” Van Noy said. “I know Chris is going for a bigger sound, a wider sound. Yardling was a very small record, almost a Strokes record. It was very pointed. On this one, he wanted it to sound bigger. I think he pulled it off. I think when you have more space between the layers, you have more sound coming at you.” By the album’s close, those layers present a confession from Demiglio. Every man is indeed an island. Emotional bridges are entirely flammable. Cities Can Wait was written over six years’ time, as Demiglio was letting go of a relationship and considering a major change. “It’s sort of a secular vs. nonsecular record,” he said. “Cities Can Wait was about not moving to Seattle. It was about deciding to stick where I was and do what I needed to do.”

Robin Wright portrays Mary Surratt, a woman accused of taking part in the plot to assassinate President Lincoln, in The Conspirator.
OPENING FRIDAY
Atlas Shrugged: Part I Dagny Taggart (Taylor Schilling), a powerful railroad executive, tries to keep her business afloat while society crumbles around her. Based on the novel by Ayn Rand. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. In a Better World (##1/2) In this surprise Oscar winner for best foreign language film, Danish director Susanne Bier posits that individual conflicts can be as harmful as war. Or something like that. The point is left somewhat elusive in the story of a doctor in a war-torn part of Africa who returns home to Denmark, and his young son who takes a different approach to conflict. Rated R, 119 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Miral (##) Muddled, heavy-handed drama from director Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) tries to combine the stories of four women from different generations struggling with decades of IsraeliPalestinian conflict. The film, based on a memoir by Rula Jebreal, isn’t shy about taking sides, but the filmmaking lacks conviction. The stylistic touches are undermined by an audacious but didactic screenplay. The cast includes Hiam Abbass, Frieda Pinto and Willem Dafoe. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Peep World (#1/2) An interesting cast is squandered in this broad ensemble comedy about four siblings who reunite to celebrate their father’s 70th birthday just as one of them (Ben Schwartz) has written a best-selling book that exposes various family secrets. The premise is thin and the movie feels more like a scatterbrained sitcom filled with all kinds of bickering and uneven shifts between serious drama and lowbrow gags. Also stars Rainn Wilson, Michael C. Hall and Sarah Silverman. Not rated, 79 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — T.J. Rio (##1/2) The latest 3-D animated comedy from director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age 2) is an energetic if formulaic talking-animal saga about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) from small-town Minnesota who ventures to Brazil with his owner (Anne Hathaway) to ensure the survival of his species. Along the way, creatures both good and evil cross their path. There are plenty of colorful characters to entertain the

History lessons By Boo Allen he Conspirator begins in April 1865. But it’s no secret that everything in the new drama from director Robert Redford refers directly to current events in this country. James Solomon’s story and screenplay about what followed Abraham Lincoln’s assassination becomes a mystery as well as a morality play under Redford’s capable direction. The mystery comes not only in whether Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) was involved in the conspiracy behind Lincoln’s murder, but also in whether the U.S. government acted legally in pursuing and prosecuting her. But, if officials acted illegally, not to mention ignobly, would the still-suffering union recover
from such injustices? More blatantly, the trial replays similarsounding arguments about the government’s assaults on the Constitution and its suspension of civil rights after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Solomon’s dialogue can be heard both as the infuriating denials of legalities in 1865 as well as the lingering, ongoing debate over how much official power can be exerted in a time of perceived war.
In The Conspirator, as in history, which the film faithfully follows, those guilty in the conspiracy were found and executed. Surratt’s son John (Johnny Simmons) knew the men involved and often met with them in his mother’s boardinghouse. Through this appearance of acquaintance, Surratt was arrested and tried as a conspirator. Redford uses the trial to flash back to reveal the planning leading up to the murderous event. The Constitution mandates that Surratt must be tried in court, so first, Sen. Reverdy Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) railroads recent Union officer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) into defending her. In the trial, a military tribunal with handpicked judge advocates, injustices arise so blatant and
kids, even if it feels like we’ve seen most of this song-and-dance before. Rated G, 96 minutes. — T.J. Rubber (###1/2) You haven’t seen it all until you’ve seen this ridiculous but captivating lark about an inanimate tire — that’s right, like those on your car — named Robert that turns
into a serial killer at a rundown motel. Not much about it makes any sense, of course, and that’s part of the subversive idea, as the film states. Grisly and hilarious, it’s certainly not for all tastes, and director Quentin Dupieux almost dares you to hate it. But as pretentious as that
sounds, it’s actually kind of clever. Rated R, 82 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — T.J. Scream 4 (###) After a decade or so since the last installment of this entertaining horror-satire series, the horror returns to Woodsboro. New faces (Emma Roberts, Marley

The Conspirator Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas.
‘Conspirator’ draws parallels between film’s story, today severe that it’s easy to understand the allusions to today. On the sidelines, bellicose Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline) manipulates the judges, restricts the witnesses and virtually arranges for the obvious verdict he believes will give balm to a country struggling to reunify. Newton Thomas Sigel’s ingenious cinematography, with a deft use of light and shadow with hazy naturalistic hues, transforms the courtroom into a 19th-century fantasyland. And Kalina Ivanov’s production designs convey the simplicity of the settings, something that could not be said about the circumstances.
Shelton) blend with old faces (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette), as well as director Wes Craven and creator and writer Kevin Williamson, to deliver more of the same frights and faux frights. Still fun, still self-referential. Rated R, 111 minutes. — B.A.
