About 90 authors will fill the Denton Civic Center this Saturday for the North Texas Book Festival. Each author will have a table where they will be selling their books and answering questions. Admission is free. Lynn Sheffield Simmons, founder of the festival, feels that talking with other authors can open up writers to new ideas and subjects they’ve never written about before. On Friday night the festival will kick off with the Book Trails Dinner, a ticketed event that fea-

tures guest speakers Gayle Ross and Rose-Mary Rumbley. Ross is a direct descendant of John Ross, who led the Cherokee Ross Indians on the Trail of Tears when American Indians were relocated from their homelands to Indian Territory, Simmons said. “She has the most interesting Indian tales,” Simmons said. Rumbley is a native of Dallas who has written several books including a cookbook called What! No Chili!
“She is hilarious,” Simmons said. “People just flock to hear Rose-Mary.” Both authors will be at the festival on Saturday as well. Simmons thinks the North Texas Book Festival, now its 10th year, has grown through word of mouth. This is the largest number of authors the festival has hosted — up from the festival’s typical draw of 50 to 55 authors. Because of the increase, the festival moved from the Center for the Visual Arts to the larger Civic Center. The festival feeds a grant program that benefits local libraries.

ndustrial Street merchants mean to keep their date with spring, even if it does mean an unlikely marriage between skateboarding and indie rock. The third annual Industrial Street Bash brings food, music and even some skateboard mastery to the small city block that’s become a music and casual dining destination in downtown. Dan’s Silverleaf, Little Guys Movers, Rooster’s Roadhouse, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and Seniors in Motion have made a day of it for a few years, turning their
patch of Denton into a party zone that boasts live bands, lots of eats and vendor booths. This year, the activity starts at noon. The event includes arts and crafts for children and music in front of the block of businesses — joined this year by Hot Box Pizza. Skateboarding star Mike Crum will demonstrate some of his finest street skating stunts. Blues guitarist and singer Carolyn Wonderland starts off the music at 1:45 p.m. Denton band Slobberbone contin-

Comic stands up for Cumberland On Tuesday, Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home is raising funds through laughter. The nonprofit is hosting “Just for the Fun(ds) of It,” an evening of comedy featuring comedian Tony Stone, who grew up and attended high school in Denton. Cumberland provides residential care for children and teenagers who need a safe place to live, said Caroline Lara, the home’s director of advancement. Lara found Stone on Gigmasters.com, a site where people can find entertainers for their events. It turned out that Stone had lived near Cumberland while growing up, so he was familiar with what the home does.
Tuesday’s program will start with a preview of Denton Community Theatre’s Cinderella, which is currently in production at the Campus Theatre — the site of Cumberland’s fundraiser. The casual event will include complimentary wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres before the show. “We mean for it to be comfortable and relaxed,” Lara said. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets are $50, and proceeds go to Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home. Tickets will be available at the door. For more information, call Lara at 940-382-5112, ext. 270, or e-mail clara@cpch.org. — Rachel Mehlhaff

UNT undertakes Verdi requiem
For the first time in 18 years, the University of North Texas College of Music tackles Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, with a performance in Denton and in Fort Worth’s Bass Hall. Verdi composed Requiem in memory of Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni. The UNT Symphony and Grand Chorus join forces to perform the requiem first in Denton, at 3 p.m. Sunday in Winspear Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center. The ensembles perform the piece again at 8 p.m. at Bass Performance Hall. Verdi’s Requiem is considered one of the most important
pieces in Western music. James C. Scott, the dean of the College of Music, said the requiem uses the feeling and drama of Verdi’s operas. The performance features four soloists: soprano Christina Major, a former UNT and Texas Woman’s University student and rising opera star labeled as a “sensitive actress” by Opera News; mezzo-soprano Alissa Anderson, a 2003 graduate of UNT praised as a “powerful mezzo” by Opera News; tenor Kwan Kyun Joo, a UNT doctoral student who has appeared professionally as a soloist on the opera, oratorio and recital stage; and bass-
baritone Stephen Morscheck, a UNT faculty member who has performed to critical acclaim around the world. Maestro David Itkin will lead the symphony and chorus, which are among the university’s most prestigious groups, in the requiem. Jerry McCoy is the director of the chorus. Tickets for the Denton performance are $8 to $10 for adults and free for UNT students. Call 940-369-7802 or visit www.thempac.com. Tickets for the Bass Hall date are $10 to $20. OPENING FRIDAY
The Eclipse (##) A recently widowed university professor (Ciaran Hinds) in a coastal Irish town meets and greets a distinguished author (Iben Hjejile) visiting for a conference. In the interim, he may be seeing ghosts. Or maybe not. As expected, they have a pro forma romance. Aidan Quinn plays a combative fellow author/former lover. Desultory film fluctuates awkwardly among romance, domestic drama and horror fantasy, never settling on any. Rated R, 88 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Boo Allen Death at a Funeral As mourners gather at the family home to pay their last respects to a beloved husband and father, shocking revelations, festering resentments, ugly threats, blackmail and a misdirected corpse unleash lethal mayhem. With Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Danny Glover, Zoe Saldana, Loretta Devine and James Marsden. Rated R, 90 minutes. The Joneses (##1/2) A beautiful, trendy couple (David Duchovny and Demi Moore) move into an upscale neighborhood with their two perfect high-schoolers (Amber Heard and Ben Hollingsworth). But all is not as it seems; the family is really a corporate unit, sent to targeted neighborhoods to show off their latest bling to potential consumers. That is, until remorse sets in. The film has a clever basic premise but little else, as it inevitably runs out of steam. Rated R, 96 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. The Perfect Game (##) The notion that everyone loves an underdog story is put to the test by this predictably sappy baseball saga, based on the true story of some ragtag youngsters from Monterrey, Mexico, who form the first foreign team to win the Little League World Series in 1957. The film tracks not only their exploits on the field, but the obstacles the players and coach overcome along the way. However, the film is so overloaded with cliches that it compromises the emotional impact. Directed by William Dear (Angels in the Outfield). Rated PG, 118 minutes. At regional theaters. — Todd Jorgenson The Secret of Kells (###1/2) Style only slightly trumps substance in this Oscar-nominated animated adventure based on Irish mythology, which

Chloe Grace Moretz, left, stars as Hit Girl and Mark Strong as a mob boss in Kick-Ass.
Bloody fun New film beats the hell out of an old concept
Kick-Ass Rated R, 117 minutes. Opens Friday.
In the end, Kick-Ass comes down to this: a huge, 300-plus pound mobster with a bazooka chases down an 11-year-old girl on the top floor of a Manhattan high-rise. In the background, Elvis belts out “Battle Hymn of the Republic” over the carnage already caused when the girl wiped out an entire criminal gang. Kick-Ass could easily be described as “busy.” But, surprisingly, it also breathes life into a tired genre, giving clever twists to a cinematic trope in desperate need of resuscitation. It mixes comic book superhero worship with black humor, action, likable characters, and a convoluted storyline that never confuses the good guys with the bad. Matthew Vaughn directed,
bringing the needed edginess of his 2004 Layer Cake, one of the best British crime dramas of the last decade. Vaughn and Jane Goldman wrote the screenplay, based on Mark Millar’s comic book series. Vaughn has also previously worked as producer for Guy Ritchie, so many of Ritchie’s usual gang of oddballs and misfits can be seen in roles both minor and major. Aaron Johnson plays nerdy teen Dave Lizewski, target of bullies and ignored by girls. He wills himself to become the superhero Kick-Ass, despite having no superpowers or any aptitude for the job. After several beatings and setbacks, his career prospects change when he becomes entangled in an intricate drug-dealing organization run by mobster Frank D’Amico (the always versatile Mark Strong). Kick-Ass finds he has competition in the form of Big Daddy and Hit Girl (Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz), a father and
daughter team bent on revenge against D’Amico and his gang. The cutesy couple freely trade barbs, profanities and gunshots, showing an individualistic approach to child-rearing. The story twists and turns, establishing various conflicts — both personal and professional — between several warring factions. Yet Vaughn allows time for Lizewski to enchant his school sweetheart (Lyndsy Fonseca) and hang with his wise-cracking buddies (Clark Duke and Evan Peters). Avoiding too many dead spots, Vaughn maintains a consistent pace for nearly two hours. He keeps viewers alert with the various visual shocks that also aid his knack for a sense of surprise, an originality that separates Kick-Ass from other comic-book incarnations. tells of a boy who escapes his secluded life in a medieval outpost to venture into the forbidden forest, where he encounters a variety of creatures both good and evil in search of an ancient and vital secret.
The film is likely too dark for small children, although they might identify with the main character. However, the hand-drawn animation yields some dazzling imagery that make this a unique experience. Not rated,

quirky hijinks involving a trio of plastic toys — a horse, a cowboy and an Indian — friends who share a house and a host of hilarious misadventures that begin when the horse's birthday party goes awry. The rudimentary animation is a perfect fit for a story that is consistently clever and charming, even if it starts to run out of gas in the final half. It's not Toy Story, but it's completely original and almost as brilliant. Not rated, 77 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — T.J. Vincere (###1/2) Even those who have seen the story of infamous dictator Benito Mussolini before will find plenty of surprises in this stylish and provocative glimpse into his relationship with a young woman (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) during his rise to political power. Veteran filmmaker Marco Bellochio uses too many visual tricks to get his point across, but he does provide the film with a compelling balance between human intimacy and broader historical context. The performances, including Filippo Timi as the young Mussolini, add emotional depth. Not rated, 128 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J.
NOW PLAYING Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — The Associated Press Clash of the Titans Ancient Greek hero Perseus (Sam Worthington) takes on Hades, lord of the underworld. With Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes. Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP Diary of a Wimpy Kid (##1/2) This mildly amusing, strictly-for-kids comedy based on Jeff Kinney’s illustrated novel sees wimpy yet wise-cracking Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) struggling through his first days in middle school. Kinney’s stick figures (sometimes) come to life to illustrate Greg’s clueless parents (Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn) and his obnoxious brother. Rated PG, 120 minutes. — B.A. Hot Tub Time Machine After a night of drinking, a group of best friends (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke) wakes up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. Rated R, 100 minutes. Letters to God A look at the galvanizing effect one 8-year-old cancerstricken boy’s faith has on his family, friends and community. Rated PG, 110 minutes. She’s Out of My League An average guy (Jay Baruchel of Undeclared) scores big when a super-babe inexplicably falls for him. Rated R, 104 minutes. — AP Why Did I Get Married Too? Filmmaker Tyler Perry co-stars with Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba and other castmates for this relationship sequel. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — AP

ine summers ago, Sheena Croft arrived in Denton with nothing but her cat, her car and a small overnight bag. Excited to start a new life in Texas, her boyfriend — now husband — was about to begin graduate studies in art at the University of North Texas, while Croft, a trained chef, planned to travel around Texas to learn about its cuisine. They packed all of their belongings in a huge Ryder truck and drove in tandem from southern Georgia, stopping to spend the night in New Orleans. The next morning, they woke up to find their truck gone.

They did, however, have an apartment ready and waiting. The property management company provided them with towels and toothbrushes. Croft’s aunt sent a care package of clothes and helped them with immediate expenses. But the stress of starting over in a new place took its toll. At a shopping excursion at Sears, the couple had a minor meltdown. It got the attention of a clerk, who called in the store manager, who listened to their story and offered them a line of credit at zero percent interest. The Sears manager also handed Croft a section of the Denton RecordChronicle with an article about a new “Tex-French” restaurant that was opening in two weeks, called “Hannah’s Off the Square.” “I put on clothes from my aunt and drove to Hannah’s,” Croft said. She was determined to convince the then-owner, Eric Hill, that she was the perfect person to be chef. Unfortunately, he already had hired someone else, but Croft didn’t give up. She told him: “I know this cuisine. I know your customer base. I worked at a restaurant just like this for three years. Let me create a menu.” Almost a decade later, Croft is still creating menus as the restaurant’s executive chef, never leaving her Southern roots far behind. “We didn’t have fast food,” said Croft, referring to her years growing up in southern Georgia and northern Florida. Instead, her family ate what was readily available to them. “My chicken was shark tail, alligator, snapping turtle — they were all mystery white meats,” Croft said. “We’d get mussels from the river, go down to the creek and get crawfish, go deep-sea fishing where the Suwannee River enters the Gulf of Mexico. We were down there every other weekend, bring back whatever, fishing in the river behind our house, getting mullet, smoking the mullet, gathering hickory nuts for the fire, drying sassafras leaves from the tree in the backyard for gumbo filé.” Even now when Croft goes home for Christmas, she can count on being served either quail or squirrel. “My mom gets her .22 out and goes into the front yard,” she said.
Croft became particularly mindful of using fresh, local ingredients a few years ago when she read the book Plenty: Eating Locally on the 100-Mile Diet, by Alisa Smith and J.B. Mackinnon. The book inspired her to create a meal served family-style for Hannah’s patrons using only ingredients found within a 100-mile radius of Denton — all the way down to the salt. The 100-mile meal has now grown into a biannual event. Previous such meals were held in the fall, when fresh, local produce is abundant. However, Hannah’s upcoming 100-mile meal is the first to be held during the spring. “There’s not as much in the spring as in the fall,” Croft said. She called it “a challenge. I just want to see if I can do it.” The 100-mile-diet concept is related to the Slow Food movement, whose focus, in part, is reducing the environmental impact of how food is brought from farm to table. “It’s also the way of preparing food — the idea of things being cooked simply within their season, as fresh as possible,” Croft said. The dishes served Tuesday night will be based on what produce is available “right then,” Croft said. “The food really does dictate the recipes.” The menu will include soup; simple salads; sauteed greens; roasted and braised meats including beef, pork and chicken; egg dishes; and fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dessert. The meal will be accompanied by local wines selected by wine steward Jason Lastovica. “My large food vendors have contracts with local farmers. I can order through my regular supply,” Croft said. She will also get some specialty items from small farms “at the last second.” She’ll use herbs grown in her own garden, a stash from her larder of canned goods and red wine vinegar from other seasons and 100-mile meals past, and produce from local growers through the Denton Community Market and The Cupboard Natural Foods. In addition, she has been promised amaranth (Chinese spinach) from the community garden at Bowling Green Park. “I have a plot there,” Croft said. “I put in tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, chili peppers, all kinds of stuff. I’m really excited to be able to get some things from there for the next [100-mile meal] in the fall. ELLEN SACKETT can be reached at 940566-6845.
