he top jazz ensembles at the University of North Texas join forces again for a concert that celebrates a collection of Grammy-winning music that the College of Music and the UNT Music Library received last fall. The collection: vocal music by the indelible Gene Puerling, the musician behind the Hi-Lo’s and The Singers Unlimited. The concert: a program of Puerling’s work from the collection, performed by the UNT Jazz Singers and the UNT One O’clock Lab Band. The show is at 8 p.m. today in Voertman Hall at the UNT Mu-

sic Building, 415 Ave. C. An encore performance will follow at 8 p.m. Friday. “Many of the songs recorded by Puerling’s groups, the Hi-Lo’s and The Singers Unlimited, are from the repertoire of the classic American songbook,” vocal jazz professor Jennifer Barnes said in a news release. “Having this music at UNT has allowed me to teach it to the next generation of vocalists.” Barnes’ father, Don Shelton, was a member of both groups. Shelton will attend the concert with Clark Burroughs and Bonnie Herman, also alumni of Puerling’s groups.

The three will participate in free question-and-answer sessions from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday in Voertman Hall. Tickets for the concerts tonight and Friday cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, students, children, UNT faculty, staff and retirees, and free for UNT students with valid ID. Because it will be the first of 400 trees destined for Denton parks and properties as part of the city’s urban reforestation program. h” during hot July days. Barker, the program director of on Beautiful, said the transplant nch caliper tree. That means the e oak, a tree native to the Texas bers, measures about 5 inches

e planted in Quakertown Park, sidered the city’s busiest park, and

the grounds of the Redbud Festival. Barker said the tree — and those that will follow it — was chosen carefully, with the city’s climate, rainfall and wildlife in mind. “Because it’s a native tree, after it’s established, it has pretty low water needs,” Barker said. “It’s well-suited to this area. We talk a lot about the kinds of trees we ought to be planting as we continue our reforestation work.”

She said the burr oak is medium-sized tree. At maturity, a burr oak stands between 75 and 100 feet tall. “At its full size, it has the typical canopy of a tree of that size,” Barker said. The Saturday tree-planting is part of Keep Denton Beautiful’s expanded Arbor Day programming, thanks to a $10,000 tree mitigation fund grant awarded to the agency by the Denton City Council. BURR OAK TRIVIA ■ The burr oak is a fire-resistant tree, thanks to its moist and supple leaves and its cycle of leaf-shedding in colder seasons. ■ The tree is one of the largest oaks, with trunks that can grow to 10 feet in diameter. ■ The burr oak produces the largest acorn of any North American oak tree. ■ The tree is classified as a slow-growing, and provides habitat for native birds, songbirds and owls as well as food for Texas squirrels. Trees Given the trees’ stature and lush canopies, the reforestation of Denton parks will likely be a boon to local families who like to go to city parks, but find them difficult to bear in the summer and early fall. “I’m a mom, and there is one park in Denton I just don’t go to in the summer because the playground is just too hot,” Barker said. Residents will have to be patient, though. “As far as canopy and greenery go, it takes a number of years to establish that,” she said. Denton Parks & Recreation Department director Emerson Vorel said this year marks the first that City Council has authorized the department to use tree mitigation fund money to plant trees. The department will plant trees in Carl Young Sr. Park on Wood Street and at North Pointe Park on West Hercules Lane before the end of spring. In the fall, the department will plant trees in North Lakes Park and South Lakes Park. Vorel said the department took beautification, canopy and resident wishes into account when deciding where trees will be planted. “This first round of planting — and this is hopefully the first of what will be multiple years of tree plantings — will create shade on a number of our trails. That’s what a lot of people wanted,” Vorel said. “In North Lakes and South Lakes parks, a lot of the planting will take place near the trails. We really are looking at a multi-pronged purpose with the planting. We want to create shade in the parks, and beautification and canopy cover in the whole city. And of course, trees help reduce air pollution.” Vorel said the first tree planting will place burr oak, live oak, red oak and cedar elm trees in the parks. “Drip irrigation will be installed on all those trees,” Vorel said. “Typically, we will use irrigation pretty heavily for the first three years, to establish the trees. And then we’d use [irrigation] in severe drought, like last year. We can decide when and if we need to do any supplemental

irrigation.” But, Barker said, the native trees selected for the plantings are known for tolerating finicky, dry North Texas soil. Barker said the reforestation program is part of Denton’s identity as a Tree City, a status granted by the Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA program. Denton has been recertified a Tree City for the 24th year in a row. To be a Tree City, the Arbor Day Foundation says a city has to do four things: Establish a tree board or department, enact a tree ordinance, start and keep up a community forestry pro-

gram with an annual budget of $2 per capita, and finally, observe Arbor Day with a proclamation and program. Arbor Day is on April 24 this year. In addition to Saturday’s tree planting, Keep Denton Beautiful distributed 1,800 free redbud seedlings to third-graders at 20 Denton ISD schools. And last week the parks department unfurled a “Tree City USA” flag at South Lakes Park, where it’ll fly until April 20. two conflicted characters who join in an unlikely harmony before becoming adversarial. From the start, director and co-screenwriter Rupert Goold, with David Kajganich, bases the film on Michael Finkel’s memoir. But everything immediately becomes hazy as Finkel, a New York Times reporter, is justifiably accused of bending the facts on one of his stories. So, even though Finkel (Hill) spends the remainder of the film trying to clear his name, while loudly asserting a love and need for the truth, how can he be believed? When the fired Finkel finds himself a journalistic pariah, he jumps at the chance to land the only interview granted by the jailed Christian Longo (Franco), accused of the murders of his wife and three young children.

True Story Rated R, 100 minutes. Opens Friday.

In a strange twist, at the time he was arrested and incarcerated, Longo had been living under Mike Finkel’s name. Through several lengthy jailhouse conversations, which Goold films with close-ups and extreme close-ups, Finkel and Longo form a shaky bond. The convict surprisingly asserts his innocence, a questionable enough claim that allows Finkel to land a book publishing contract. From there, several plot twists and diversions play out that create doubt as to who actually killed the four victims, if

not Longo. But if he did, why? Goold intelligently assembles these dramatic elements along with a gratuitous and cursory glimpse at Finkel’s stressed relationship with his partner, Jill (Felicity Jones). The recent best actress Oscar nominee would have seemed wasted in her perfunctory role if not for a single scene in which she answers a phone call from the jailed Longo. They trade forced banalities, leaving her shaken as well as questioning her relationship with Finkel. Finally, True Story delivers a sustained drama with accomplished performances. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — The Associated Press Furious 7 ( ★ 1★ ⁄2) Fast-moving ★ fight scenes, outrageous auto antics and a sprinkling of ridiculous oneliners make Furious 7 a campy, crowd-pleasing escape. The story is just a framework for car chases and fight scenes. Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew are acclimating to life on the right side of the law when they’re attacked by Shaw (Jason Statham), bent on avenging the death of his brother. The crew is approached by a secret operative (Kurt Russell) who’ll help take out Shaw if Dom’s crew can secure a breakthrough tracking device — also sought by a group of mercenaries, led by Djimon Honsou. Reality intrudes at the end: The film is dedicated to actor Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013. Directed by James Wan (Saw, Insidious). Rated PG-13, 140 minutes. — AP Get Hard A millionaire hedge-fund manager convicted of fraud and given 30 days to get his affairs in order foolishly enlists his car washer to toughen him up for prison. With Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart and Tip “T.I.” Harris. Directed by Etan Cohen. Rated R, 100 minutes. — LAT Home When the Earth is taken over by overconfident aliens in search of a new home, a resourceful girl and an outcast extraterrestrial become unlikely partners in crime. With Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist and Daniel Zovatto. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. Not rated, 92 minutes. — LAT The Longest Ride ( ★ ★The ★) Longest Ride, based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, offers two love stories at once. Sophia (Britt Robertson) and Luke (Scott Eastwood, son of Clint) are the younger pair. She’s an art history student who plans to work in a New York gallery, and he’s a competitive bull rider trying to claim the national title. A convoluted and unrealistic set of circumstances lead them to meet Ira (Alan Alda), a widowed curmudgeon who clings to a collection of love letters he wrote to his late wife. It is through these letters that the young couple, and the audience, learns about Ira’s love affair with Ruth. With Jack Huston and Oona Chaplin.
