Elizabeth Patel spent most of her time in computer technical support. By day, the Frisco craftswoman helped support corporate PC systems; by night and weekend, she indulged her love of accessories. “I was driving around with a friend one day, and I just said: ‘One day, I’m going to make purses and bags and I’m going to call it LizzieCaye,’” Patel said, sitFrisco artist ting in her tidy workroom. That’s DRC/Barron Ludlum when she tried to make her first bag. She said she just wanted to try “felting things.” “I liked it. It wasn’t something that was so time-consuming. There was a sense of starting something and finishing it that I liked,” she said. “I don’t have an ego about failing at something. I never had any fear about trying something and not having it work.” Soon, she was felting wool sweaters. Felting occurs when you wash knitted or woven wool yarn from sheep, goats, llamas or alpacas. The water and agitation bind the yarn fibers together, tightening the weave or knit. Once a piece is felted, it won’t fray. Patel experimented with purse patterns. She mostly makes messengerstyle bags — a roomy bag that can be worn slung across the body with a long strap. Her signature bag is a cotton messenger bag with a big fabric flower stitched to it. Almost all of her bags include an inside open pocket; select bags have a zipper compartment. She explains her choice to line the bags with white cotton: “How many times have you been looking for that black tube of lipstick in the bottom of a black-lined bag?” She uses old sweaters for her clutch purses, embellishing them with designs applied with felting needles. She spreads the wool across a block of foam, and rapidly pokes colorful felt fibers through it using two needles. Her mother, Carol Knight, does all of the beading on the items, and Patel uses old jewelry and key chain split rings as handles. Patel said about 85 percent of her materials are recycled. “All of my fabrics are in some way, shape or form, recycled,” Patel said. “I think I’ve always been the person who’s like, if we don’t take responsibility for the crap that we do, we only have ourselves to blame. When I was on the student council, I was the one trying to legalize marijuana so it could be used as paper. I was that kid.”
Karen Arzamendi Her craft: installation, art quilts Her signature medium: plastic zipper bags, found items
Denton artist Karen Arzamendi insists that she never had a strong inclination to make art. She’s never drawn or painted. Her creative pursuits were always limited to quilting. “Before I lived in Denton, I lived in Mexicali, Mexico,” she said. “That’s where I fell in love with color. Then, I started collecting anything with color. That led to collecting Mexican folk art.” Which in turn led to collecting Eastern European folk art — which is similar in scale and design to Mexican folk art. She was also making traditional quilts. That led Arzamendi to art quilting, which moves the art from the bed to the wall — even into the gallery. Color is a big part of quilting, and she makes use of it. Arzamendi is mere months away from graduating with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. She said she struggled to settle on her master’s project. All she knew for certain was she wasn’t going to quilt. Faculty members wanted her to push herself. “I’ve always been super organized and I’ve always used plastic bags to organize things,” she said. “Someone was in my studio and saw these plastic bags and made a joke about them. They said: ‘You should just put these bags on the wall.’ And I thought, ‘Well, why not?’”
Arzamendi started looking for objects that repreArtist Karen sented phases of her life. A G.I. Joe figure is here, a Arzamendi blue sponge is there. Arzamendi didn’t dye or paint any of the objects. She stitched the bags together with clear monofilament and suspended them from the ceiling with fishing line. It took nine days for several people to install the work — which is made of just under 1,000 bags — and Arzamendi said she had to make repairs. The weight of the plastic house tore some of the seams, and a door ripped three feet of a wall. Arzamendi said she didn’t set out to make a statement about pollution, but the project did make her think about it a lot. “I’m absolutely obsessive about recycling,” she said. “It made me think about our culture and how materialistic we are.” Arzamendi said she will probably use plastic in her future work. “I miss quilting. But I don’t think I’m done with plastic. I think it’ll be there in some way,” she said.

Leslie Kregel has been Dumpster-diving for art materials since before recycling was fashionable. She fished Plexiglas out of the trash to make collage pins. When her children were small, she claimed furniture left on the side of the road. She cleaned it up, painted it and sold it. “It was a lot of fun to find something on the side of the road. I’d see something about it that was special, and I’d just toss it in the car. I’ve always had this thing about recycling,” she said. Kregel grew up with a dad who can still fix just about anything, and a mother and grandmother who could sew. As a teacher in the Denton schools for 24 years, Kregel found that a lot of students didn’t have the skills to build or sew. Cimarrona, her handmade hat and accessories business, came about almost by accident. “I shrank my favorite backpacking sweater by accident,” she said. “I was so mad. I loved that sweater, and even though it was tiny, I couldn’t part with it. I saw this hat that my husband was wearing. It was basically two pieces — a circle and a rectangle for the band. I was like: ‘I can sew that.’ So I cut the sweater into pieces and made a hat.” Soon enough, she was experimenting with hats made of felted wool sweaters. An adult-size wool sweater will shrink to fit a newborn or a doll, and it creates a slightly fuzzy look and a softer texture. Cimarrona was born from the project, and named for the artist’s favorite Colorado mountain. Kregel gets her sweaters from thrift stores and the occasional mystery bag placed on her porch. “I have a process. I wash and felt the sweaters, then I cut out the pieces and put them in a pouch. When I’m ready to sew, I sew them all. When I’m ready to add the designs [felted flowers, leaves and lines], I do them all at once,” she said. She also has a brand: A single button with four holes. She stitches a bright red “X” on the button, on the very back of the cap. “I can tell if it’s one of my hats when I see that,” she said. She spots them often. Her commitment to making as little waste as possible turned into barrettes and pins. “When you cut the sweaters up, there is this rope of material from the inside seam of the sleeves. As I was making them, I had this bag full of these things. I didn’t want to throw them away, so I started making designs out of them and putting them on hats. I can make flowers and circles and little designs out of them.” Her hats started selling so briskly that Kregel thought about what she could sell the rest of the year. She added stuffed dolls made from felted wool and fabric scraps. They look like animals, and a lot of them sold as tooth fairy pillows, thanks to a pocket on the front of the doll’s overalls. She’s now altering castoff T-shirts — mending tears with bright thread, stitching over their design or adding to it to turn it into something else. “This is something I can sell in the warmer months. I was out selling hats at the Denton Community Market like crazy, and I figured I needed something for hot weather,” she said. Kregel said her art is a way to challenge the way people think about the objects they use then throw away. “When people toss something, they’ve decided it’s not worth anything. By doing this, I’m saying ‘yeah, it is worth something.’ I’m asking people to think about this thing they’ve tossed out in a different way.”

enton’s Spooky Folk doesn’t mind staying busy. The local quintet has treated fans to a seamless evolution from reliable folk rock to an inventive indie act that tucks harmonies into real, live indie rock. The band is part of the Gutterth show at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio on Saturday at the anticipated Fishboy album release show (Fishboy’s Classic Creeps comes out on vinyl on May 10, but there might be CDs available at the show. Fishboy’s Eric Michener explains on www.yofishboy.com that there isn’t an official CD, but a limited press is in the works with cover art made by Michener himself.) Spooky Folk and Fishboy share the stage with Alpha Bet and regular bill mate New Science Projects. Spooky Folk appeals to the underground music fiend, the indie junkie and anyone who thinks music ought to be delivered with attitude, regardless of the arrangement. The band uses an organ, accordion, Petra Kelly’s dialectic violin where

original Frilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen has been serving up tasty meals with a Cajun flair. the vegan chili years ago and still find time to pop by on a cold, rainy day to pick up a hot entree. During the spring and summer, with its outdoor pergola dining area, fresh salads and other lighter fare are made available on the ever-changing menu as the restaurant continues to experiment with different dishes to bring only the best to its customers. Sarah Jaffe www.sarahjaffe.com
BEST DENTON BAND
Even if it’s no surprise that singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe earned the highest honor Best of Denton can give to a performer, it’s still well-deserved. Jaffe is riding a creative high that took off with last fall’s release of her debut album, Suburban Nature, surged with invitations to open on tour with Midlake, Norah Jones and Lou Barlow, and ended with a spot on all the right year-end lists — USA Today, Paste magazine, the Denton Record-Chronicle and Amazon.com. Jaffe saw her groundbreaking EP, Even Born Again, reissued on Kirtland Records. When it came time for Jaffe to take a main stage spot at 35 Conferette in March, she proved she’s not one to ride creative inertia. Instead, she reinterpreted the high fliers from her album and shared some of her upcoming electronic numbers. Runner-up: Karyna Cruz

Adam Reese has leadingman looks and the heart of stagehand. The combination probably ranked high for local audiences, who have seen him on stage with Music Theatre of Denton. If they haven’t seen him on stage, they’ve still benefited from Reese’s work managing the house at the Campus Theatre, or from his work keeping local productions very much on the promotional grapevine. In our memory, Reese will always be a standout as Spider, the sinister master of the Red Rat in Jekyll & Hyde. Music Theatre of Denton did the show ages ago, but we won’t soon forget Reese’s charisma and the dark sexiness he brought to the role. Runner-up: Justin Harmon Bragging rights: Maribeth Ayer

The first to set roots, this comfortable, hometown bar set its sights on re-establishing itself as the place to hangout for Denton residents. Not only has it succeeded, but it has brought a lot of friends to put down roots nearby. It’s also the place to take in some of the best bands touring through Denton on almost any night of the week. African Cats (###1/2) Samuel L. Jackson narrates this Disney documentary about the title subjects, African lions and cheetahs. The filmmakers somehow capture these majestic creatures as they fight, play, bond, give birth and struggle to survive both their environs and their natural enemies. Most of the gore remains off-screen in the familyfriendly production. Rated G, 89 minutes. — Boo Allen American: The Bill Hicks Story (##1/2) Uneven documentary about the life of the acerbic Texas comedian who was best known for his controversial views on politics and religion. The film uses a photo-animation technique to recreate his story using archival footage, and then employs multiple narrators to share memories. Its visual style tries too hard, but it should posthumously expand Hicks’ cult fan base. Not rated, 102 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson I Am Documentary explores the life of actor-comedian Tom Shadyac after he’s left incapacitated by a cycling accident. He eventually recovers, but is left unsettled about his life. Here, he meets with a variety of people from the worlds of science, philosophy and faith. Not rated, 116 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. Madea’s Big Happy Family When Shirley (Loretta Devine), Madea’s niece, receives distressing news about her health, the only thing she wants is her family gathered around her — but her three adult children are too preoccupied with their own troubles to pay attention to her. Enter Madea (Tyler Perry), who must bring the clan together and help Shirley deal with her crisis. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. Poetry (###1/2) Complex if deliberately paced character study from Korean director Chang-dong Lee (Secret Sunshine) tells of an elderly woman (Jeong-hie Yun) who enrolls in a poetry class as a way to cope with a tragedy and discover meaning in her life. Although the film might test the patience of some viewers, it has some subtle rewards, both in Yun’s performance and in its exploration of self-discovery. Not rated, 139 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — T.J. Super (###) The audacity in this low-budget action-comedy from director James Gunn (Slither) com-

cash-strapped circus owner with a disregard for animals and employees alike. When a new elephant joins Marlena’s act, its affection for Jacob over August causes further conflict. The film is sure to be a target for cynicism among non-romantics because Lawrence and LaGravenese place an emphasis on melodrama and sentimentality. There are some fine character-driven moments but few surprises to tie them together. Pattinson, of course, has a history of turning popular books into successful films. He offers another of his sullen, brooding portrayals that might be a nice fit for the Twilight series but
doesn’t provide much charisma. His chemistry with Witherspoon is lukewarm at best. Waltz offers a menacing turn as a man driven to increasingly desperate measures, and Hal Holbrook is excellent as the elderly present-day Jacob who tells the story in flashback. However, the film loses its emotional impact, becoming more ludicrous as it proceeds toward an eye-rolling finale. While the book has its devoted followers, its cinematic translation bogs down in various tearjerker cliches.
Hanna (###) A girl (Saoirse Ronan) is trained in survival skills by her father (Eric Bana) in a remote wilderness area of Finland where they live. Flushed out by CIA agents, including Cate Blanchett, the two escape, setting off wild action scenes complemented by director Joe Wright’s knack for the strange. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — B.A. Scream 4 (###) After a decade or
so since the last installment of this entertaining horror-satire series, the horror returns to Woodsboro. New faces (Emma Roberts, Marley Shelton) blend with old faces (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette), as well as director Wes Craven and creator and writer Kevin Williamson, to deliver more of the same frights and faux frights. Yet it’s unlikely that this bigscreen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen will convert many viewers who aren’t already sold on buying a ticket.
