hris Knight will be performing his brand of acoustic country at 9 tonight at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. The singersongwriter from Slaughters, Ky., will be performing works from his most recent album, Trailer II, a continuation of its predecessor, The Trailer Tapes, recorded with only two microphones in a singlewide in the heat of the summer of 1996. Knight’s music has been compared to that of such musicians as Bruce Springsteen, Hank Williams, John Prine and Steve Earle. Knight’s truthful telling of the small-town downtrodden makes him a voice of Americana worthy of being heard. Denton musician Chris Welch, who plays with Pinebox Serenade and the Jakeys, will open for Knight with a 30minute solo set. Cream of the crop Students had to impress Nasher Sculpture Center Director Jeremy Strick to land a piece in the annual Voertman Student Art Exhibition. The show is a coveted one for students, not only because it gets them into a gallery show in spite of the pinched exhibition calendar at the University of North Texas, but also because the top pieces bring in scholarship money. This year marks the 50th Voertman art show. The show opened earlier this week in the UNT Art Gallery, the most prominent of the university galleries. Students who made the show produced work in painting, printmaking, ceramics and photography. Cash prizes come from Voertman’s Bookstore, private donors and studio programs within the college. The exhibit runs through May 2. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. egafaun’s music is as warm and fuzzy as the gentleman performers’ wooly beards. Band members Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook and Phil Cook’s influences come from “everything and everyone,” according to their MySpace page, but astute ears will recognize a mix of folk, country, gospel and ’60s rock sung in homey harmony and accompanied by banjo, guitar, accordion and drums. MOVIES OPENING FRIDAY The Back-Up Plan (##) Assemblyline romantic comedy stars Jennifer Lopez as a pet store owner who has trouble finding Mr. Right, so she tries artificial insemination, only to meet her perfect man (Alex O'Loughlin) on the very same day. After she has trouble telling him the secret, it threatens to tear them apart. However, like just about everything that precedes it, the ending is pretty easy to guess. Lopez and O'Loughlin generate some moderate chemistry, but the eccentric supporting cast has many of the best lines in this contrived cute-fest. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson The Losers A Special Forces team seeks revenge after its members are betrayed and presumed dead on a mission. With Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans. Rated PG13, 98 minutes. — The Associated Press The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers (###1/2) Oscarnominated documentary takes a compelling look at the story of Ellsberg, a contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense who leaked classified documents to the meEllsberg dia in 1971 to expose truths behind the Vietnam War. While the film lacks structural polish, it's an eye-opening look at its subject and the ramifications of his actions, with segments that take on the feel of an espionage thriller. History buffs should find plenty to enjoy here, regardless of politics. Not rated, 92 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J. Sweetgrass (###) The filmmakers took almost a decade to make this better-than-it-sounds documentary about cowboys herding sheep in Montana. They document one of the last outfits still running sheep across the immense open lands to graze, staying with them for an entire summer, fighting off predators, watching births, and coping with the loneliness and frustration. Slow-moving at times but eventually ingratiates itself. Not rated, 101 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen

Oceans is magnificent. This tribute to awe and majesty from Disneynature uncovers a world of wonders both above and beneath the waters that encircle our globe, the oceans that, in the soft-spoken words of narrator Pierce Brosnan, feed us and have provided us with our greatest stories and legends. And here, 84 minutes of stunning beauty and unimaginable variety fly by, as some of the planet’s hidden marvels are revealed.
French filmmakers Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud spent nearly a decade recording rarely or never seen sea life, documenting their strange, predatory, yet often frolicsome, humanlike ways. Whether it is the whales weighing more than 100 tons, or barely visible crabs scuttling across the ocean floors, they have been captured in their natural settings, provoking both fear and admiration. The wondrous sights of Oceans never end, with each succeeding sea creature evoking additional responses of
New film opens up hidden world under the sea astonishment. The directors have obviously selected not only the most strikingly visual examples of marine life but also those that provide their film with the highest entertainment value. This superlative technical achievement also captures several unusual underwater sounds, maybe not so surprising when viewers are informed that sound travels farther and faster underwater. Elsewhere, nature plays out as “big fish eat little fish,” and every creature must use its own guile, speed and prowess to

survive. Only one of 1,000 baby sea turtles hatched on land will make it to the sea without being snapped up from above. The race is on — not just for a lonely turtle, but also to perpetuate the species. From playful sea otters off the California coast, to migrating whales in the Arctic, Oceans documents a world too beautiful to ignore or overlook. DR. e’s got the whole world in his jazz. Chick Corea leads the Chick Corea Trio as the headline act for the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival’s opening night. Corea’s jazz shrinks from nary a corner of the world. He’s recorded with bluegrass banjo legend Bela Fleck and electronic jazzman Herbie Hancock, among many others. And Corea has applied the jazz idiom to classical music. Since he began his career in the 1960s, Corea has used his piano — both acoustic and electric — to cross boundaries of culture and language. Vaughan keeps jazz fest rolling the Southern way By Ellen Sackett Staff Writer
Legendary Austin-based blues/rock singer-guitarist Jimmie Vaughan will bring his ax to Denton to perform as Saturday night’s headliner for the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. “I’m excited to come to Denton,” Vaughan said in a phone interview. “I used to play there when I was a kid and lived in Dallas.” He moved from Dallas to Austin in 1970 and has been there ever since. 12:15 p.m. — Childbloom Guitar Ensemble 1 p.m. — Accordion Fusion 2 p.m. — Ginnings Elementary School Choir 2:30 p.m. — Houston Elementary School Singers Choir 3 p.m. — Denton Bell Band 3:45 p.m. — Rivera Elementary School Stars Choir 4 p.m. — Providence Elementary School Performers 4:30 p.m. — McNair Elementary School Commander Choir 5 p.m. — Pecan Creek Elementary School Bear Tones Choir

He will be joined by guest vocalist Lou Ann Barton, a Fort Worth native who goes way back with Vaughan, even before he formed the Fabulous Thunderbirds with her as a member in 1974. “Lou Ann was there in the beginning,” Vaughan said of his longtime colleague. “I saw her sing and enjoyed it, and I wanted to make music with her.” He claims he heard her sing a Little Richard medley when she was 18, and he never recovered. “She was wild,” he said. rhythm guitar, Ronnie James on standup bass, and Greg Piccolo and Doug James on saxophone. Fans will have the opportunity to hear many of the cuts from Vaughan’s album Blues, Ballads and Favorites, to be released on Shout Factory in July. This is Vaughan’s fourth solo album and his first studio release in nine years. Vaughan said the music he chose is “part of the American blues songbook. A lot of these songs were hits in that genre. A lot of them weren’t — they were pretty obscure. My goal has always been to play what I want to hear, and hopefully other people will want to hear that too.” “I wanted to find songs I could play and sing that would work for us,” he said. “It’s stuff that I like, and I thought people would like it.” Vaughan has numerous recordings to his credit, including seven with the Fabulous Thunderbirds and a 1990 duo album with brother Stevie Ray Vaughan, who died in a helicopter crash just days before the album’s release. The brothers won their second Grammy for this recording, and Jimmie Vaughan has two others to his name, including best traditional blues album in 2001. Vaughan, Barton and the band will be on tour in the Midwest, the East Coast and Europe through much of May, June and July, including a gig at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago.

Dance dance revolution Cluck, cluck, cluck: Brave Combo closes festival with a challenge By Rachel Mehlhaff Staff Writer
Brave Combo plans to bring down the curtain on the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival with local favorites including the “Hokey Pokey” and the “Chicken Dance.” In fact, band leader Carl Finch would like to set the world record for largest group chicken dance with Brave Combo’s dark-sounding version — if not on Sunday evening, then maybe next year? “I’m throwing it out there,” he said. “I’m making it a challenge.” Brave Combo closes out the annual festival on Sunday night, and Finch enjoys the tradition. “It’s a hard experience to beat,” he said.
Brave Combo 7 p.m. Sunday on the Jazz Stage
The Grammy-winning band has been the closing act of the festival since 1991 — a year after the festival formed into what it is today — according to Carol Short, founder and chief organizer of the event. So what secures the band’s position as the final act of the festival? The fact that Brave Combo is a “homegrown band” that formed around the same time as the Denton Festival Foundation, Short said. “This is a community event, this is our band, this is how we want to close the event,” she said. Of course, being the closing act isn’t the only perk Finch enjoys. He also enjoys the backstage food and portable toilets reserved for performers only. Unfortunately, he won’t have much time to enjoy what he jokingly calls
“hedonistic pleasures,” because aside from the Arts & Jazz Festival, his band has four other performances around the area this weekend. But the Denton festival ranks among the band’s top five shows of the year because it’s what Finch calls the “Denton family reunion.” Brave Combo plans to play many of the songs people expect, but the group still hopes to put on a surprising show. “I’ll tell you how we make it different every year,” Finch said. “We get a year older.” He’s kidding, although for Sunday’s performance, the band will be jamming with a few extra hands on deck, including an accordionist, a trombonist and extra percussionists. There will be a “full stage of people making a lot of noise,” Finch said. The band might not make the chicken dance world record this year, but the arm-flapping, wiggling and clucking will go on.

Percussion pied piper plans big hit for festival By Rachel Mehlhaff
Children’s art area
Staff Writer
The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is helping redefine the term “petting zoo.” “The nice thing about my petting zoo is it doesn’t smell,” said Steve Gryb, who calls himself the “Pied Piper of Percussion.” The children’s area at this weekend’s festival Gryb will offer Gryb’s percussion petting zoo, featuring more than 100 different instruments from around the world. Gryb, a jazz musician from Miami, Fla., says people will recognize his tent by the noise — and the bubbles coming from his bubble machine. He’ll be around to answer questions about what the instruments are and how to play them. Though his tent will be in the children’s area, he said it offers something for all ages. “The people who get the biggest kick

out of it are the parents,” said Gryb, who travels around the country performing his percussion show, “The Rhythm Is Going to Get You,” and conducting his percussion zoo. “What I’m doing is very different, and that’s what I think makes it a big hit,” he said. Gryb says everybody has a rhythm, and he want to bring it out in them. “I’m trying to stamp out musical illiteracy,” he said. The children’s art area will also include a magician performing tricks and making balloon sculptures, a singing cowboy and plenty of art projects. Jane Ruestmann, coordinator of the children’s art tent, said she tries to offer a variety of art projects, from painting to printmaking. She picks projects that aren’t too messy, so kids can take their newly made creations with them.

“It’s a real positive experience for them,” she said. Ruestmann sees a couple thousand children — toddlers through middle school students — come through the tent during its two days at the festival.
She sees the art tent as an extension of what she does as an art teacher for Hilltop Elementary and Argyle Intermediate schools. “It’s just another way to reach kids,” Ruestmann said.

o ahead, have your turkey legs, your roasted corn and your funnel cakes. You can keep your cinnamon-roasted almonds, your Jamaican jerk chicken, and your chocolate-dipped bananas. Guzzle as much beer, wine, lemonade and soft drinks as you like and while you’re at it, indulge in as many fried foods as you can. But you’ll find me at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival standing in line for kettle corn. “What is kettle corn?” you may ask. It puts the dimple in my cheeks, the
song in my step, the tickle in my fancy. It is also the most delectable combination of slightly sweet, salty and lightly crunchy known to mankind, or at least to fairgoers throughout the centuries. I’m not exaggerating. While no one knows who invented kettle corn, it’s been around a while, and it may even date back to the 1700s, when it was a savory treat at festive events. Supposedly, early colonial settlers from Pennsylvania wrote about it in their diaries. I can read it now: Dear Diary … How I love thee, oh kettle corn. My taste buds cannot wait until thou passeth through my fair lips.
They made it then pretty much the same way it’s made today, by tossing corn kernels into hot fat (nowadays, oil) with a little molasses, honey or sugar and watching the kernels pop to perfection, and adding a little salt. The scientific name for popcorn or popping corn is Zea mays everta, which means “corn turned inside out.” Native Americans were the first to introduce popcorn to the early English settlers and brought a bag of popcorn to the first Thanksgiving. That was the beginning of the United States’ obsession with the savory snack, and now Americans consume
approximately 17 billion quarts of popcorn a year. Dieters claim it in its natural state as their mascot of indulgence. We sprinkle on salt, soak it in butter, cover it with cheese, and coat it with caramel. But none of that comes close to kettle corn, whose clear coating that is naked to the eye is near perfection. Here’s my diary entry: How I love thee, oh Kettle Corn. I cannot wait until tomorrow, when thou shall finally pass through my fair lips after lo, these many months. I will not forsake you for turkey legs, funnel cakes or onion rings, and I promise to be faithful to you until the end … of the bag.
