Magic feet and absent parents complicate UNT’s ‘Putnam County’
Denton Time
By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer cbreeding@dentonrc.com
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has gotten its third local treatment in Denton. The University of North Texas Department of Dance and Theatre Arts opened its staging of the popular musical comedy last weekend, with guest director Michael Serrecchia at the helm. Student performers praised Serrecchia in a talk-back session last week, after opening night. Caroline Dubberly, who played the role of Olive Ostrovsky, said Serrecchia was “one of the kindest people” she’s worked with. “He really pushed us to be honest in these performances,” she said. Putnam County is about the county spelling bee and the adolescents who hope to take the trophy. There’s last year’s champion, Chip, sidelined by the first stirrings of puberty. William Barfee is back with his “magic foot” and determined to win. Marcy Park speaks six languages and wins at everything she does. Logainne is the youngest competitor, and already an a leftleaning activist thanks to her two doting dads. And the misfit among misfits is Leaf Coneybear, a daffy spelling savant who makes all his own clothes and relies on his finger-puppet friend for comfort. Club Road in Argyle. Keynote speaker is Carlos Manuel, president of the Young Professionals Movement of LULAC. Marcy Park (Danielle Holway) bullies the asthmatic, congested William Barfee (Kole Franklin) in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at the University of North Texas. The contestants are put through the paces by Rona Lisa Peretti, a real estate agent and past champion. Vice Principal Doug Panch is grudgingly present as a judge. Mitch Mahoney is serving his parole community service requirement as a comfort counselor. The musical was first staged in Denton by a group

Artist Susan Sponsler, a Texas Woman’s University graduate, returned to the the hooded sweatshirt for “The Hoodie Project.” Sponsler uses a historical photo printing process, cyanotype, to print nearly life-size portraits of people wearing hoodies onto a blend of linen and cotton.
In search of emotional Kevlar TWU alumna channels frustrations over Martin case with hoodie art or Susan Sponsler, the only way to make sense of the death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teenager shot to death in Sanford, Fla., in 2012, was to make art. As the Texas Woman’s University alumna worked, her art blossomed into an interactive project that uses the hoodie — a simple hooded sweatshirt — as an avatar for the clash of politics, race and class that boiled in the aftermath of the trial and exoneration of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Martin. Sponsler’s solo exhibit “The Hoodie Project” runs through Saturday at WoCA Projects in Fort Worth. “The Hoodie Project” is an installation that includes 20 pieces. Sixteen are “hoodie portraits” printed in cyanotype — one of the earliest photo printing processes — on 100 percent linen and cotton. The portraits are nearly life-size. The WoCA Projects is a nonprofit, artist-run space that highlights the art of women of color working locally, nationally and internationally. Gallery hours are from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. The gallery is located at 2902 Race St., Suite 100, in Fort Worth. For more information, call 817-9017135 or visit www.wocaprojects.com. A portion of any sales generated from the Hoodie Project will be donated to the Trayvon Martin Foundation. Sponsler fielded questions about the project, her inspiration and the future of the project.

Denton Time: Why do you think the idea of the hoodie resonated with you as a subject to make art around for this exhibit? Sponsler: The Trayvon Martin murder and the subsequent outcome of the trial of George Zimmerman made me extremely angry and frustrated. The Million Hoodie March in New York City and other cities inspired me to create the Hoodie Project as a visual protest of the acquittal of George Zimmerman and in memory of Trayvon Martin, who was killed because he was a young black man wearing a hoodie. Here in Denton, people of all races wear the hooded sweatshirt that pundit Geraldo Rivera suggested is an unofficial uniform for felons across the country. Why do you think unsavory meanings were ascribed to this garment — worn by everyone from millionaire socialite Paris Hilton to Trayvon Martin? I don’t know. The hoodie was not declared a “uniform for felons” until after George Zimmerman decided Trayvon Martin was a thief because he was a black male and wearing a hoodie. The hood can obscure the face, but many young people today wear hoodies, and when they have the hood up, you can still see their face. From what you’ve sent, it looks as if the Hoodie Project is a growing collection of portraits of people wearing hoodies. What other images does the exhibit include?
“Gun Case,” a multimedia piece by artist Susan Sponsler, is part of her series “The Hoodie Project,” a response to the killing of Trayvon Martin. The exhibit runs through this weekend at the Fort Worth WoCA Projects, a nonprofit, artistrun space. One image is the outline of a body lying on the floor. It is printed out so that it is close to life size, and includes graphics around it in black, white and gray that are outlined in red. A white plaster gun that looks like the 9mm handgun used to kill Trayvon lies on the chest portion of the body, near the heart. A yellow evidence marker is also placed on the print. Other images include an outline of a gun burned into an open box with red wax around it. Black text including some statistics and facts pulled from the Tampa Bay Times survey of “stand your ground” cases is transferred onto the red background. I was horrified to discover the “stand your ground” law, and alarmed to find that Texas, along with 21 other
states, have also adopted a “stand your ground” law. Two other images are shaped like stop signs. The fronts of the cradled wood panels are painted red and drip with textured black wax on the sides. One has a graphic with a hand pointing a gun out at the viewer and the other says in black text: “Stop Stand Your Ground.” Do you think this work is confrontational? I don’t think that it is confrontational, although I do understand that it is a very controversial topic. I hope that my artwork encourages people to stand up against racism and stereotyping, to become aware of the many “stand your ground” law victims and to honor all victims of hate crimes.

Rated R, 110 minutes. — LAT The Quiet Ones U.K. studio imprint Hammer’s latest stylish shocker relies on high production values and sensebattering shock tactics to make up for wooden performances and an illogical, silly script. Set in 1974, the film stars Mad Men veteran Jared Harris as Joseph Coupland, an Oxford psychology professor with highly unorthodox methods. He hires an amateur cameraman (Hunger Games regular Sam Claflin) to document his controversial experiments on Jane Harper (Olivia Cooke), a mentally unstable young woman who appears to be possessed by a diabolical alter ego named Evey. Directed by John Pogue. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter

Bloodless lust
Jarmusch’s ‘Lovers Left’ drained of all life force
Not many people know this, but 17th-century playwright Christopher Marlowe is alive, sort of, relatively well, and living in Tangiers, Morocco. Oh, and he is a drug-pushing vampire whose most popular product is O-negative Popsicles. Such are the tidbits gleaned from Only Lovers Left Alive, the decidedly odd new feature from Jim Jarmusch, the godfather of independent cinema. Unfortunately, despite these quirks, nothing adds up to much of interest in this slice of drudgery from Jarmusch. The director defies current fads, tastes and norms by mak-
ing a film based on vampires that neither caters to young audiences, nor has any sort of commercial appeal. Only Lovers has a few funny bits, but it is not a spoof, satire or comedy. It’s not a romance since the main characters, Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton), live apart and have been married for a century and a half. Plus, it never offers up anything of substance to elevate it to metaphorical or philosophic levels. And it has virtually no special effects or fantasy sequences. Even at the end, it’s unclear what exactly Jarmusch has been shooting for. Whatever it was, the results are a gloomy mess. To compound the ever-in-
creasing ennui, Only Lovers Left Alive also never presents much of a plot. Adam languishes in a Detroit apartment, while Eve rests in Tangiers, near her supplier, the 400-year-old Mr. Marlowe (John Hurt). Eve eventually travels to Detroit to be with her husband, but the location doesn’t matter because almost
the entire film takes place in a grubby apartment filled with old guitars. We might not even know they are vampires if they didn’t tell us. During their time together, they pass time by talking of old friends, you know, like Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft and Byron (“He was a pompous ass”). Despite his film’s slightness and utter absurdity, Jarmusch has somehow landed a quality leading cast, with Hiddleston coming off triumphs on stage with Coriolanus and on screen as Thor’s brother. Swinton’s mere presence usually elevates anything in which she appears, but here she simply seems lost in the morass.
“ticking clock” thriller built around the NFL draft, a movie that counts down to the fateful decision that one embattled general manager (Kevin Costner) makes with his team’s first-round pick. With Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Chi McBride and Frank Langella. Rated PG-13, 109 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Heaven Is for Real (★★1⁄2) After undergoing harrowing surgery for a ruptured appendix, 4-year-old Colton Burpo (Connor Corum) begins recall-
ing his journey to heaven, worrying his pastor father, Todd (Greg Kinnear), and mother, Sonja (Kelly Reilly). Though Todd sticks up for his son, his faith is also tested. As Colton, Corum does an excellent job of speaking softly, yet with conviction, while Kinnear never fails to embody the everyman. Based on Todd Burpo’s Christian nonfiction best-seller. Rated PG, 100 minutes. — The Associated Press Oculus (★★★) The women do the
heavy lifting in Oculus, a complex and chilling big-screen ghost story. Doctor Who alumna Karen Gillan plays Kaylie, who’s out to destroy an ornate, baroque mirror that seemed to possess her parents and put her brother into a mental institution. Directed by Mike Flanagan. Rated R, 111 minutes. — MCT Transcendence (★★) A disappointingly sleepy Johnny Depp stars as Dr. Will Caster, inventor of the potentially all-powerful Physically Independent
Neural Network (PINN), an early artificial intelligence. Desperate to keep Caster’s mind alive after an assassination attempt, his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and colleague Max (Paul Bettany) upload Caster’s brain to a PC. Anti-tech activists descend, and Max begins to realize they’ve created a high-speed Frankenstein. Director Wally Pfister doesn’t exhibit a sure hand with dialogue or a feel for the rhythm of his narrative. Rated PG-13, 119 minutes. — AP

Spring in swing
Local sibling duo Bonnie and Nick Norris, shown at last year’s Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, bring their Western-tinged tunes back to the Courtyard Stage at 7:30 p.m
Denton’s party in the park starts Friday t’s this weekend: Denton’s biggest festival of the year. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is the city’s signal that spring has sprung. Should you wander into Quakertown Park during the last weekend of April, you’ll find the music flows from every direction. And the paintings, prints, pottery, jewelry, fiber art and sculpture? They stretch from one end of the park to another. Bounce houses vault children back and forth, and everywhere you turn, you see old friends. This year, the Denton Festival Foundation and its members — the Top Hands — bring jazz legend Al Jarreau to the Jazz
I
Stage on Friday night, Asleep at the Wheel on Saturday and Brave Combo on Sunday. While waiting, attendees can tour the children’s art tent and woodworking area, munch on festival foods, and stop by the seven stages — six outdoors and one inside the Denton Senior Center — to catch upand-coming musicians (be they alt-country, traditional jazz, rock or something else altogether), as well as student ensembles, dance groups and other performers. Wear sunscreen and sensible shoes. Oh, and bring a rain poncho — the festival will go on, rain or shine. — Lucinda Breeding

ROBERT HOKAMP AT JAZZ FEST The local musician performs with Bubba Hernandez at 9 p.m. Saturday on the Courtyard Stage, and with A Taste of Herb at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on the Jazz Stage. Robert Hokamp keeps busy, at jazz fest and beyond By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
enton guitarist and bassist Robert Hokamp just released two full-length albums at the same time. One album, Jungle Team, is a quirky, instrumental concept record, full of color and sunshine. The second, Bees, is a traditional “straight-ahead jazz record” the musician said he’d been wanting to write. But it was Jungle Team that came first. It’s a weird, enticing record that defies easy categorization. Singer Jimin Lee drives the songs with a sweet, pure soprano. With no lyrics to pin her down, Lee seems to frollick through the record with “la las,” “bada da dup dups” and “ya doe lows” against Matt Moore’s clarinet, Hokamp’s plucking and strumming, Sam Jones’ drums, and Spenser Liszt’s bass clarinet and tenor sax. Sean McLellan and Ben Jones provide the electronics and synthesizers on the record. To the duo’s credit, their contributions second the playful posture of the record, and complement the warm feel of the tracks — which are mostly short. The longest track, “The Globe,” clocks in at a compact 3 1/2 minutes. The shortest, “Veery,” is just over a minute long. “I was interested in the idea of things not repeating,” Hokamp said. “That’s not to say it wasn’t structured, because it was very structured. Everything was

Guitarist and bassist Robert Hokamp recently released two albums, and he’s playing with a couple of groups during this weekend’s Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. recorded with a click track. Very. I wanted everything to be a certain way. I’m interested in movie music. It’s something I’d like to do. I was thinking about soundtrack music.” The record is ripe for animation. “The Globe” is alternately happy and mournful — perfect for a cartoon about a little planet in a big galaxy navigating a dangerous course around the sun. “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” is begging for a Wes Anderson movie about a boy and a girl building a time machine in the attic of a drowsy uncle. Bass clarinet gives way to surf-punk guitar licks in “Weeps-a-pideea,” a song that seems simple but gives Hokamp room to do his virtuosic thing on his best instrument. Hokamp was something of a precocious talent. While at Ryan High School, he was studying guitar with University of North Texas jazz guitar faculty member Fred Hamilton — and he was the only student Hamilton taught who wasn’t in college. Hokamp was and is a fixture in Denton punk outfit the WeeBeasties, where he swapped gui-
tar for trumpet. After he graduated from UNT, Hokamp settled in his hometown. He works as a composer and is especially busy in Denton’s live music scene. He plays with Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos, Los Patos Poderosos, Richard Haskins and the Unmarked Graves, A Cruel Country, A Taste of Herb, Dangle Dixon and Palm Trio. (And local music buffs thought Ryan Thomas Becker was busy.) Except for the heavily improvised “The Dream,” Hokamp said he wrote the music for every song on Jungle Team. He wrote all the parts, and the band members recorded each part separately — layering the songs to their finish. Hokamp said he thinks of Jungle Team as a cousin to a film score, using music to illustrate mood, emotion and color. “I was thinking about more of an overt narrative,” he said. “I’m always really inspired by nature. I like the idea of being lost somewhere. It’s funny, too. The music isn’t too, too serious.” For all its structure, Jungle Team is full of whimsy. Between Lee, Liszt and Moore’s singing
with voice and woodwind and even strumming from Hokamp, the record sounds free of pretense. Hokamp is handy with making technique serve his ideas. All the musicians involved are clearly competent and clever. But they aren’t mannered or showy. By the time we get to “Friendlier People” on the album, the clarinet almost twirls, until Hokamp’s guitar work — sharp high-fives of notes — suggests they drop the dancing and do some socializing. The band started working on Jungle Team in the fall of 2012, and Hokamp said production took more time than anticipated. Bees hatched more easily. Hokamp gathered a different group of players to make his second record: Stuart Mack on trumpet, Nick Salvucci on tenor saxophone, Young Heo on bass and Matt Young on drums. “I wanted to do a jazz album,” Hokamp said. “I wanted, before I did a bunch of albums, to make a straight-ahead jazz record.” The 10-track record was inspired — at least distantly — by saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. Shorter proved himself to be a fluent composer, writing modal jazz (think John Coltrane in the early 1960s) and mashing up R&B, funk and soul into jazz (think Grover Washington or Al Jarreau, who headlines the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival on Friday) while also writing hard bop. “Jazz can be simpler than pop,” Hokamp said. “When you write a melody, it has to be clear enough to give the improvisers something to go on.” See HOKAMP on 11

It’s a hit with kids Young ones can shake, rattle, tap at exhibit he Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is a family event through and through, but event organizers are careful to cater to their youngest attendees. There’s the children’s art tent, where they get to leave with a piece of art they’ve made with the help of volunteers. And percussionist Steve Gryb is bringing back his kid-friendly racket for the fifth year. Gryb is a Miamibased percussionist and teacher who travels with his “Rhythm Is Going to Get You” show and his percusSteve Gryb sion petting zoo that keeps children streaming into his booth. The petting zoo encourages children to try their hands at percussion instruments at a leisurely pace. Gryb shared a sneak peek at the shaking, rattling and thumping he’ll bring to the jazz festival.

Hokamp Hokamp said Bees is a simpler record than Jungle Team. “It was a lot harder to write, yeah,” he said. “You have a lot more decision to make about what to leave out, what you’re not going to use.” He said he approached the songwriting the same way he approaches drawing. “I don’t try to start with something that is going to work, because I try not to be limited,” he said. Bees reflects that. Most of the songs are expansive. The composer gives clear lines and lets the band improvise. Don’t be fooled by the title. Salvucci and Mack don’t buzz busily all over the place. And Hokamp hangs back, sometimes fading deliberate behind Heo’s work on the upright (“Everything Sleeps”). If there’s any metaphor to be had here, it’s that the musicians all take up their work diligently.

Children try out a xylophone and what percussionist Steve Gryb calls “an old wrench-ophone” in his percussion petting zoo, a mainstay in the children’s area at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. Denton Time: What keeps you coming back to the Denton Arts & Jazz Fest? Gryb: I love how professionally run the festival is. Everything is so well organized, and Carol Short is a pleasure to work with. Also, the people and kids are so well behaved and a lot of fun
Their end? To keep the sweet stuff coming, smooth and citrine. Young doesn’t phone it in behind the drum kit, either. He slips into high gear, propelling the winds to new places. Hokamp is a master of the blend on guitar. A guitar can be shrill and unwieldy, but he masters it to the benefit of Mack and Salvucci. Hokamp isn’t a natural frontman. When quizzed about whether he had dates for a double CD release show, he got sheepish. “I probably should do that, but no, I haven’t,” he said. Even as a teenager, Hokamp wasn’t overdemonstrative on stage. He lets the music do the expressing. If you’re looking for a show, you’re likely to feel cheated for histrionics if you’re looking to the bassist. But if you want music that lives and breathes, Hokamp won’t disappoint. As it turns out, he has a lot to say. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
to entertain. I think they really appreciate educational music shows and exhibits in Denton with its long music history at the university. What can you tell me about the new percussion instruments you’ll be bringing to the festival? I have added something called a boomophone to my
percussion petting zoo activity and exhibit. It’s a twoand-a-half-octave xylophone made from Boomwhackers. It’s cool and colorful, and the kids really seem to enjoy playing on this instrument. I have also added some new animal shakers, Remo Versa drums, Zildjian cymbals and new Remo tambourines.
What part of your program do children seem to enjoy the most? The kids seem to enjoy the hands-on interaction with my percussion instruments. They love to beat on the bongo drums during the “Rhythm Is Going to Get You” show, and shake the maracas, play the tambourines, and wiggle, jiggle and jam with me. How can percussion instruments open doors for music-making for children? Well, I believe that everyone has rhythm. My job is to bring it out of you. As the “Pied Piper of Percussion,” I am an international ambassador of percussion, and I try to bring my passion for percussion to everyone by exposing the young and young at heart to various styles of music during my shows, and showing how much fun music-making can be, utilizing the power of percussion to capture their attention. I believe that through education and entertainment (edutainment), I can inspire, and light a spark.
