I

t’s a big night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio. Meme Gallery — an alcohol-free gallery adjoining the local bar — is set for Gutterth’s Dead Week Print Show.

The gallery leans mostly on alumni of University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design for the popular dead week show, an event that entices the college set to come out and party before finals and graduation. Gutterth is a local independent record and production company.

Tonight’s event is a printmaking show curated

by Denton artist Taylor McClure, the illustrator of Pan Ector Industries, and the Printmaking Association of North Texas Students. Pan Ector, a popular, homegrown Denton screen printing

company, will make merchandise live with the company’s mobile screen press.

Tonight’s music, which will be on stage next door at Rubber Gloves, is by Pinkish Black, Nervous Curtains, Diamond Age and Forever Home, a new project from James Washington of Peopleodian and John Gillespie of Bad Design.

DJ Gavin G will run the house music.

Gutterth’s Dead Week Print Show events have a record for packing the venue.

enton guitarist Eric Keyes hasn’t been cooling his jets.

Keyes just finished his latest single, “Words of a Song,” and yielded the video camera to Austin filmmaker Mick Cevallos. Come Friday, Keyes will premiere the video and song at the Abbey Underground.

The gig starts with Nashville singer-songwriter Melody Guy, then a fashion show by designer Audrey Brown. Brown’s show features Mose Models, who will be at the opening night of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival until they’ll be pulled — in a wooden chariot — in a procession to the Abbey Inn.

Keyes and his band will go on at 11 p.m.

Keyes developed his guitar groove by merging African rhythms with jazz harmonies and the rawness of rock.

Hip-hop duo to drop latest album at Andy’s bar

cott McBride insists that Denton’s Xegesis thought it had exhausted the whole “shock” theme. The duo — McBride writes with beat-maker Ritchy Flow — christened its first album Future Shock and then followed it up with Aftershock.

The latest effort brought the theme of shock back again.

“We really weren’t going to use that anymore,” said McBride. “But then we came up with shock therapy sessions and that was too good to let go.”

Shock Therapy Sessions is another parcel of evidence in the Denton hip-hop vault. It confirms that Flow and McBride aren’t satisfied by the unending posturing that pervades mass-market hip-hop.

Rather, the two young men have decided to sit in judgment of themselves — warts and all — and leave listeners to pull the lever to deliver the blackout juice to their collective musical brain.

On Shock Therapy, Xegesis deals with some serious emotional dope, but the two rappers acknowledge the Janus head that is masculinity. One part of them is still comfortable in boyhood, where they can be the patron saint of immaturity — begging the metaphorical ladies in the

crowd to put up with their butt-grabbing, bra strap-snapping hooliganism. The other part of them — the bill-paying, job-doing part of them — examines the meaning of manhood. Is being grown an exercise in stepping and fetching to the fat cats’ whims? Or can they connect with someone — anyone — who will let them take off the puffy-chested and verse-slinging mask and still stick around. That’s the thrust of “Lost.” This is where hip-hop finds a shred of humanity and a fiber of redemption — when the artists drop what poet Sarah Jones calls “the empty pursuit of props and egos” and start trying “to make love de la soul.” McBride and Flow wish they could fry the bad stuff from their gray matter, but they also get that they need to pick the bones of bad deaths,

whether it’s a dream or a relationship that’s been incinerated.

Shock Therapy doesn’t apologize for the bare-knuckles rhymes that could bruise feminist sensibilities.

“We don’t rap about stuff just to be offensive,” Flow said.

“The words mean something, and sometimes they don’t mean what you think they do.”

The album rocks a little nastier than Aftershock, with more raw sexual references and fewer double entendres.

And yet the groove on “Put Me In Your Mouth” flies fast with Czech rapper Jackpot taking over some verses that sound as, er, invitational as they probably come off in English.

Going nowhere, slowly ‘Engagement’ gets off to good start but ends up in unfunny limbo

The problem that plagues so many Judd Apatow productions — the one that keeps good comedies from being great ones — unfortunately exists in The Five-Year Engagement, too. It’s a matter of knowing when to say when, of knowing which bits should be trimmed and which should have been cut altogether.

The Five-Year Engagement is so scattered and overlong, it really feels like it lasts five years, and even the inherent likability of stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt can’t overcome the film’s pervasive sense of strain. It almost gets to the point where you hope these two will break up for good, just because it’s the pragmatic thing to do and because it would finally wrap things up.

And that’s a shame, because the movie reunites Segel with Nicholas Stoller; the two also co-wrote 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, one of the more well-balanced Apatow productions.

Engagement touches on themes of love found and lost in a serious way, and to its credit, it does find some moments of emotional truth amid the inconsistent laughs.

But man, it can be a messy slog to get to

It begins promisingly enough, though.

Segel’s Tom Solomon, a sous chef at an upscale San Francisco restaurant, proposes to his girlfriend, Blunt’s Violet Barnes, on the one-year anniversary of the night they met: New Year’s Eve. Blunt and Segel have an easy, low-key way with each other in these early scenes that never rises to fullscale, crackling chemistry.

But as they’re planning their wedding, Violet gets accepted to the University of Michigan to study for her doctorate in psychology, so they postpone their big day for the first of many times. Seasons change, years pass and Tom isn’t nearly so enamored of snowy Ann Arbor as he pretended to be at the beginning. Meanwhile, Violet is asked to stay and do post-doctorate work,

so they’re stuck in marital limbo even longer than expected. Tom continues trudging away at a deli that is totally beneath his culinary expertise while Violet works even more closely with her intriguing Welsh professor (Rhys Ifans).

Additionally, Violet’s sister (Alison Brie) has gotten pregnant from a drunken romp with Tom’s loutish best friend (Chris Pratt), and the resulting pregnancy — and wedding, and baby — supposedly serve as further obstacles to Violet and Tom’s nuptials.

This all sounds like a drag, right? That’s because it is.

Stoller and Segel try to liven things up with wacky gags and oddball supporting characters, including Tom’s profane boss (Brian Posehn), who’s obsessed with pickling things; Tom’s only friend (Chris Parnell), a university spouse who knits sloppy sweaters and teaches him to hunt deer; and Ming (Randall Park), one of Violet’s research partners who has wild ideas for experiments that are never funny.

One character slices off part of a finger.

Another loses a toe. And on it rambles.

The movie finally finds some muchneeded whimsy at the absolute end — but by then, it’s too late.

The film leads up to her extended house arrest, while outside her home she becomes an international symbol, eventually leading to her Nobel Peace Prize. Timely release for the film as her saga continues. Rated R, 132 minutes. At the Magnolia. — B.A.

Free-flowing and evolving This year’s headliners cover wide range of styles

he weather forecast says Denton can expect plenty of sun and warm temperatures this weekend. That means a summer dress code — and some sunscreen — for attendees of the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. The little ones have plenty to do at the Children’s Art Tent and at Steve Gryb’s Percussion Petting Zoo, and adults can shop hundreds of vendor booths and check out seven stages.

Arts & Jazz Festival fans who prefer that their cats play it cool and heady should make sure to be

That’s the night jazz guitar virtuoso Lee Ritenour plays.

Ritenour came of age in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Not only was the country watching life change rapidly, but music hounds were listening

Jazz guitarists have been made — and probably broken — at the University of North Texas Jazz Studies program.

Ritenour is a Cali musician who can be a supporting player for a vocalist or sax soloist, or he can weave a song out of the air, picking up a theme from a fellow player and elaborating on it. And though Ritenour — who’s been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards — is at his best when he’s bumping through a cool, funky number with a proper drummer and a fearless musician, he can also channel the simmer of Brazilian music. When the moment calls for it, Ritenour can cook. (An example?

The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival isn’t about bowing to a purist’s jazz. Saturday night brings on the sonic gumbo the festival always honors, and this time, it brings a Texas band to the main stage: Los Lonely Boys.

Boys’ bassist Jojo Garza was waiting to board a plane to Puerto Rico when he recently talked to Little d After Dark, the Denton Record-Chronicle’s monthly local music magazine, about Rockpango, the trio’s 2011 release. The album is what the brothers consider a party record — a musical moment when people can suspend their worries about their world and celebrate. Think of a backyard barbecue where the beer, herb and Tex-Mex flavors are a banquet. (When the boys party, there’s no property damage. There’s just music, emotion and lots of dancing. It’s hard to hold a grudge when the groove is on the move.)

If Los Lonely Boys had a musical motto, it would be “don’t fence me in,” Garza said.

“To be quite honest, we’re really just tired of genres,” Garza said. “We’re really sick of the way people are divided by the way they listen to music, because at the end of the day, people listen to a lot of music.

We’re on a major label, and they want to go in a direction that makes it easier for them to know who to market our music to, and honestly, we don’t care about that. We’re not a stylistic band; we’re free roamin’. We’re wandering through the colors of the sky. When we make music, it doesn’t matter to us what color you are, where you live or what you do, you know?

We just want to make music that makes you feel something.

That’s where the magic is.”

The record was a place for some songs that didn’t have an album yet, Garza said.

“Some of it was already written, like ‘16 Monkeys’ and ‘Porn Star.’ Those two songs had been around five years or more.

There were some more recent songs on it, too,” Garza said.

“When we go into the studio, we don’t go in and go, ‘Let’s take this thing in this direction.’

It’s very organic.”

The album’s title track is proof that the Garzas proudly claim two cultures.

“The song is a huapango,” Garza said. “It’s a rock huapango.”

That it is. Written in a fast dance, six-eighths tempo time signature, you can hear the undulating rhythm. But the rock energy and attitude is undeniable. It’s also the song on the album that is most evocative of Stevie Ray Vaughan, though without the manic, shrill guitar Vaughan was known for. “Baby Girl” is an urgent proposal for a certain someone’s affections, with a touch of guitar tribute to Santana.

The band calls Austin home, and hasn’t gotten the itch to pick and move to Los Angeles, New York or Nashville.

Texas, it seems, is the proper Southwestern mix of black, brown and white music and culture. And Texas musicians like to hang with community without having to kowtow to purists.

“I’ll be really honest with you,” Garza said. “Every place on Earth is special. But yeah, Texas is a really magical place.

It’s something in the water, in the soil. It’s home, and a lot of people feel like you do your best work from home. Texas is home for us, and this is where we’ll stay.”
