ocal rock trio Woody’s Rampage plays Twilight Tunes at 6:30 p.m. today on the Courthouse on the Square lawn, 110 W. Hickory St. The local three-piece specializes in blues-rock that reaches back to the heyday of Sammy Hagar and Zeppelin, when rock had sharp metal edges and a habit for opera-
worthy histrionics. The band also has something in common with Denton’s RTB2 — it’s a small band that sounds way bigger than its size. Ryan Hall is on guitar and vocals, Forrest Johnson plays bass and Dave Whitlock is on drums. Twilight Tunes is in its 22nd season. The free concert series draws thousands to the
Square each Thursday evening through June. The all-ages concert series invites locals and visitors to the downtown Square to set up lawn chairs or spread blankets and get dinner, dessert, coffee or drinks from the restaurants and bars on the Square. Up next week: The Holler Time. — Lucinda Breeding

C
ouncil member Kevin Roden, the political darling of Denton’s creative class, found himself in the cross hairs of a few bar owners last week. Roden recently voted in favor of an ordinance that will ban smoking and e-cigs in Denton’s bars by 2017. Vocal critic and Rockin’ Rodeo owner Lloyd Banks got so steamed that he ventured into Denton politics for the first time as a proxy for bar owners who still allow smoking — even though Rockin’ Rodeo has been nonsmoking for more than a year. Banks hosted a “Hell Freezes Over Fundraiser” on Wednesday night for Roden’s District 1 opponent Doyle Cain, as well as for District 2 candidate John Ryan, District 3 candidate Kathleen Wazny and uncontested District 4 candidate Joey Hawkins. Pro-Roden voters later circulated a factoid far and wide via social media about Candidate Cain: He’s never voted in a local election. Denton agent provocateur Richard Haskins hastily named a punk show “Rock Against Roden: Vol 1.” to either A) show his support for the Banks contingent or B) capitalize on muckraking-in-progress to attract more people to a rowdy show. (In a stunning show of originality and confirmation of Godwin’s law, the show poster depicted Roden as — wait for it — Hitler.) Roden turned up at the party to meet the everextroverted Haskins and won him over. The smoking ban fracas led to the creation of Keep Denton Gritty, a Facebook group coordinated by local firebrand Wendy Broyles. The group labels itself as a collective that will champion all endeavors at grit retention — political and non-political. Posts to the group range from invites to craft beer gatherings to book recommendations. But make no mistake, Keep Denton Gritty is working to defeat Roden at the polls on May 9 — for now. Broyles is committed enough to the cause that she sold $5 dances (get

your mind out of the gutter, she sold good old-fashioned boogies, not lap dances) at the Hell Freezes Over Fundraiser. (It’s worth noting that Team Gritty founders, who insist they don’t want Denton to be the next Austin, seem to have modeled their group’s name after “Keep Austin Weird.” The subconscious works in strange ways, maybe?) ■ Before Brave Combo launched into “Do Something Different” Sunday at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, frontman Carl Finch told the muddy masses that he’s happy to live in a city that’s banned fracking. (Not too surprising, since the band played at a Frack Free Denton show last year.) Denton, he said, wants to be cool like Austin — but we don’t want to be Austin. Notice a theme here? “I think you know where I stand. I think every member of Brave Combo stands with me on this issue, ladies and gentlemen,” Finch told the crowd. “This is real important stuff, not just for our health — this is important for the image of the town. This is what we’ve been trying to achieve. No one can touch this right now. This is where we can be on the top. Just think about that.” ■ Not long after Denton unveiled the life-size glass sculpture of late Denton blues legend Pops Carter in Quakertown Park in 2014, the sculpture was dinged — apparently by a rock thrown by a city lawn mower, creator Christie Wood said. The safety glass was damaged by the projectile, Woods said, but there was no damage to the sculpture of Pops. The piece had to be removed for repairs. Wood said she replaced the safety glass with clear bulletproof material. Pops was back in the park by April 5 — in time to be admired by the brave souls who went out in the mud for Arts & Jazz. ■ Denton electro-acoustic musician Sarah Ruth — a.k.a. Sarah Alexander — has taken her sweet time about it, but she’s finally released her debut solo album, Words on the Wind, and it’s both beautiful and hard to pin down. Lots of trembling soprano fit for an opera chorus, yet set bravely to unlikely accompaniment. There’s also the occasional performance art sort of track, as in the looping screams of “Cathartic Utterances in My Native Tongue.” Listen for yourself: http://pourlecorpsrecords.bandcamp.com. Some of us are still in love with a performance she did with dancer Sarah Gamblin at the first Ultra Extra Arts Mix.

ry St. The musical is the stage adaptation of the 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. In the local production, Denton stage veteran Brad Justice stars as Robbie Hart, a jilted New Jersey singer who plays the wedding reception cir-
cuit. When he meets a waitress named Julia, Robbie is smitten — but she’s already spoken for by Glen, who might not be a totally loyal boyfriend. Robbie’s broken heart has started to affect his performances, but when Julia enters the picture, he starts
thinking his heart might mend. Now, all he has to do is sweep Julia off her feet — and away from Glen — with the perfect performance. The musical is suitable for all ages. Performances are 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and on May 8-9. Matinee per-

S
undown Collaborative is known for its experimental fare, and the company’s latest piece, Caryl Churchill’s Far Away, falls into that category. The play is set in a workshop where characters make elaborate hats for a sinister purpose. The company augments the setting with video projections to immerse the actors and the audience into the world Churchill has created. Far Away will be performed in a local house, with the action, the actors and the audience moving from room to room. The play follows a girl who
does what she’s told after witnessing a horror and then sees the repercussions unfold with enormous effects. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on May 8-10 at 1828 Westchester Lane in Denton. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. The show is for adults only, and the audience is expected to stand for the duration of the show. Those with special needs should call ahead to make arrangements. Audience space is limited to 20 people, so reservations are encouraged by calling. To reserve tickets, call 940220-9302 or email boxoffice@ sundowntheatre.org. — Lucinda Breeding

Ballet company stages pair of classics for kids By Lucinda Breeding

D
enton City Contemporary Ballet is headed back into the woods. For the third year, the local dance company revives two classics popular with little ones: Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Both short ballets began with the music. Prokofiev penned Peter in 1936 as a children’s story told in words and music. Saint-Saens wrote Carnival in 1886. But over the years, both have grown. Walt Disney even adapted Peter twice, and incorporated the finale of Carnival into the animated film Fantasia 2000. And along the way, the two have been turned into ballets. In Peter and the Wolf, Prokofiev’s piece is scored so that each character is represented by a particular instrument — the bird dances to the flute, the cat prowls to the clarinet and the duck struts to the oboe. Denton City Contemporary Ballet will perform the ballet to the music of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The narrator on the recording is rock legend David Bowie. Carnival of the Animals is set in 14 movements, each depicting an animal or set of animals. The choreography by artistic director Lisa Racina-Torre is meant to be playful and funny, and features both classical and contemporary ballet. Racina-Torre has broadened the palette in her version of Peter and the Wolf. Most ballets use only Prokofiev’s characters: the rebellious Peter, his protective grandfather and a supporting cast of animals — the cat, the bird, the duck. Racina-Torre has added roles from the company’s youth outreach group, Denton City Contemporary Ballet 2. Company members adopt postmodern dance as the forest’s trees, the meadow and water droplets from the duck pond. Together, the dancers tell the story of a boy who disobeys his grandfather, but captures a marauding wolf with the help of his animal friends. Carnival of the Animals makes use of Racina-Torre’s choreography as groups of animals play, run and act for young audiences. Both ballets are short, and when performed together make for a full-length show.

NOW PLAYING The Age of Adaline ( ★ 1★ ⁄2) As ★a 20-something who stopped aging 80 years ago, Blake “Gossip Girl” Lively suggests several lifetimes of experience in a love story that ranges from wistful to hopeful, a romance whose female half understands its consequences. A pedantic narrator introduces Adaline under “her current alias,” Jenny, on New Year’s Eve of 2014, then backtracks to give a quasi-scientific explanation to the aging that stopped after an icy car wreck in the early 1930s. Adaline goes underground — changing names, changing jobs, investing her money in long-shot stocks. Now she works in the San Francisco city archives, and she and her retirement-age daughter (a sparkling Ellen Burstyn) are the only ones who know her secret. Then a rich do-gooder of a suitor, Ellis (Michiel Huisman, Game of Thrones) fixes his eye on her. Rated PG-13, 70 minutes. — Tribune News Service Ex Machina Shrewdly imagined and persuasively made, this is a spooky piece of speculative fiction about artificial intelligence that’s completely plausible, capable of thinking big thoughts and providing pulp thrills. But even saying that doesn’t do full justice to this quietly unnerving Alex Garland film starring Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. Rated R, 110 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Home When the Earth is taken over by overconfident aliens in search of a new home, a resourceful girl and an outcast extraterrestrial become unlikely partners in crime. With the voices of Jim Parsons, Rihanna and Steve Martin. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — LAT Little Boy A 7-year-old boy tries to bring his father back home from World War II. With Jakob Salvati, Emily Mortimer and Michael Rapaport. Directed and co-written by Alejandro Monteverde. Directed by Mark Linfield. Rated G, 81 minutes. — LAT Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 A mall security guard heads to a convention in Las Vegas with his college-bound daughter and stumbles upon a heist. With a blast behind him, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) high-tails it in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Colossal blast By Chase Whale Film Critic
Breathe easy, Avengers fans: The team is back to take down a new ultra threat to humankind in all-new breathtaking ways. This time, the threat is accidentally made by one of their own, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) himself, Tony Stark. Avengers: Age of Ultron kicks off with a bang. Captain America (Chris Evans) and his team of superheroes are in Eastern Europe, blowing things up and beating everyone in their path to a bloody pulp. They are there to — once again — get back the scepter, that ornamental staff Loki used to cause a ruckus in Part 1 (how they keep losing it is a mystery). In the fortress where the scepter is being kept, they meet Quicksilver (Aaron TaylorJohnson), a man who runs faster than the speed of sound, and his twin sister, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who can tap into minds and alter reality, as well as shred through robots via energy blasts. Remember these two:
They come in handy throughout the film. Back at Avengers headquarters (previously Stark’s party pad in New York), Stark and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) — the Hulk (before he gets angry) — discover the gem in the scepter can create artificial intelligence. Stark believes he can build something bigger than ever before with this. “Ultron,” Stark calls it, is just like Jarvis (voiced by Paul Bettany) but feels its power is the key to making the world safe from any threat, forever. Ultron (voiced by James Spader), awakes and has a different view than Stark: It wants to eradicate all humans on Earth, leaving only robots to do robot things, which I imagine doesn’t include “fun” unless you count jamming to Styx on repeat a lot. Ultron soon builds a robot for himself and makes thousands of others, and the battle begins. Good news for movie lovers: You don’t have to be into comics
‘Ultron’ a feast of visual delights, but plot takes toll
Avengers: Age of Ultron Rated PG-13, 141 minutes. Opening Friday.
or Avengers days of yore to enjoy the movie (aside from seeing the first), but it does demand some brain power. That’s the bad news. A lot of the plot happens faster than Quicksilver’s unmatchable speed. Moreover, there are a lot of subplots to tug at the heart that could and should have been cut — this film is about war, and love weighs it down. The glorious takeaway from Avengers — and the reason you need to rush out to your local cinema ASAP — are the visually sumptuous action sequences. Nobody does comic book action better than director Joss Whedon. The many battle scenes in this film are something to marvel at. There are moments
that will leave you slack-jawed. Avengers is movie magic at its most awesome. Whedon became a threat when he made The Avengers; now he’s just showing off. The heat is on and future comic book movies will either need to top the Avengers series’ action or keep up. Our advice: Good luck, suckers. The only major issue with a film like Age of Ultron is that there are a lot of moving parts. Too many, in fact. The finale to the Avengers saga is on its way, but there’s so much to it that it’s broken into two parts: Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. If Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), who are now taking over the Avengers series, want to keep the audience fully invested, some re-Assembly is required.
