Sundown’s ‘Insatiable’ looks at culture’s taste for violence

What started as a video experiment turned into the latest offering from Sundown Collaborative Theatre in Denton. Paul Vaughn created Insatiable Infatuation With Violence while making a video. A videographer by trade, Vaughn said he was cutting scenes of violence, concocting a macabre music video to the national anthem. “And then it kind of grew from that,” Vaughn said. “I was like, ‘You know? This could be a play.’ So, kind of coming from that, I started trying to put a ground plan together and just kind of a basic outline on how that might look on stage as a mixed-media thing.” Vaughn pitched the idea to Sundown’s board. The theater company has a history of producing devised theater — a form that begins with a broad concept or a theme instead of a script, then tells a story formed by the cast and directorial team. Insatiable tells the story of a woman who is looking for justice after the murder of her brother. She’s not naive enough to expect satisfaction, but she’s surprised that people within the

justice system hinder her and the ideal itself. “Everything we’ve done this season has been an original devised piece,” said Sundown’s Tashina Richardson, the executive producer of the show. “And it was an interesting story. We do a lot of touching on things that are
politically based or liberally based, but we hadn’t done something with as a broad of a point of view as this.” Vaughn and Richardson said the play doesn’t condemn America’s fascination with violence (and its simultaneous discomfort with sexuality). It explores
the culture’s craving for gore — or at least the bruises that signify conflict that is up close and personal. The story is told using dialogue, music, dance and video. Performances are at 8 p.m. this Friday through Sunday and May 8-11 at Green Space Arts Collective, 529 Malone St.

OPENING FRIDAY On My Way (★★★) Catherine Denueve takes an unexpected road trip in this French language comedydrama co-written and directed by Emmanuelle Bercot. Deneuve plays forlorn Bettie, recently abandoned by her boyfriend and facing constant problems with her family restaurant. What starts out as a brief respite turns into a soul-searching odyssey that takes Bettie to unexplored territories. Revealing and ultimately engaging. Not rated, 116 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Teenage (★★1⁄2) Matt Wolf directed this documentary that takes a look at the 20th-century evolution of teenagers, mostly through archival footage and narrated texts. Supposedly “inspired” by Jon Savage’s book, the film covers flappers and “bright young things” from the 1920s , the Hitler Youth from the pre-World War II days, and later, a black Boy Scout, and various other examples that could be be visually represented. Interesting archival material but ultimately superficial. Not rated, 78 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

What they’ve learned UNT grad students show short films Tonight, seven graduate students screen documentaries they’ve made during their studies at the University of North Texas. The films explore diverse topics: a fierce and dangerous rock-climbing competition, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the grief of three lesbian widows. Professor and filmmaker Tania Khalaf said the students have gone through an arduous process to make their films. “Making a documentary can be challenging in every aspect,” Khalaf said in a news release. “Once the footage has been secured, the most challenging part of the process comes: constructing the story in the editing room and making it interesting and cohesive.” The screening shows the many storytelling techniques documentary filmmakers have at their disposal. One film tracks the hyper-verbal setting of local standup comedy, while others let images tell most of the story. scenes. With Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Emily VanCamp, Anthony Mackie and Hayley Atwell. Rated PG-13, 136 minutes. — B.A. Draft Day (★★1⁄2) Draft Day is a “ticking clock” thriller built around the NFL draft, a movie that counts down to the fateful decision that one embattled general manager (Kevin Costner) makes with his team’s first-round pick. To NFL fans, it’s a reasonably interesting peek behind the curtains, but for the casual fan and the casual filmgoer, it can be a bit of a melodramatic bore. Directed by Ivan Reitman. Peter Parker confronts his daddy issues in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But in this latest appearance by America’s favorite arachnid, he’s not given much time for self-analysis. As usual, in this high-tech summer blockbuster, the emphasis is on the action, the thrills, the computer-generated special effects that will turn pacified stomachs into queasy ones. And, for the most part, Spider-Man 2 breaks new ground with striking images that seem to capture the work’s comic book origins, thanks to the ace special-effects team. In addition to Spider-Man’s now standard, albeit impressive, flights through faux Manhattan, the film also features garish new villains, massive Midtown auto pileups, and a visual assault of bursting pyrotechnic displays. All that goes along with Hans Zimmer’s unobtrusive yet appropriately provocative score and Dan Mindel’s colorful photography. Marc Webb returns as director, following the 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man (not to be confused with the three To-

Windows into Arab culture UNT department presents film fest Award-winning films from Palestinian territories, Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Syria will be featured at the second Arab Film Festival Texas, presented by the University of North Texas’ Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Institute. Film festival director Tania Khalaf said it’s the only festival of its kind in the state. “On this side of the world, the only window into Arab culture is filtered through the media,” Khalaf, a professor in UNT’s radio, TV and film department, said in a news re-
lease. “The Arab world contains so much humor and heart. Bringing that to audiences is very important to me, especially here in Texas where I have lived for almost 10 years now.” Films will be shown Friday through Sunday at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. International film producer Isabelle Stead will be a part of a Q&A session after the Texas premiere of her film In My Mother’s Arms on Friday. The documentary won the Asia Pacific Screen Academy Award for Best Documentary. Stead also produced six Iraqi short films, which will be screened along with a seventh short film on Saturday. The short films were made by 20
students as part of a workshop and all focus on subjects surrounding childhood and growing up in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Following the shorts will be an interactive panel discussion, “Children and Trauma,” featuring Stead as well as other scholars. The festival also features award-winning feature-length films, including Return to Homs, about the innocence lost in Syria’s uprising; When I Saw You, a story about human triumph in the face of adversity; Wadjda, the first Saudi feature film directed by a woman, which tells the story of a freespirited girl; and A World Not Ours, an intimate portrait of a displaced Palestinian family. — Staff report
learns of the corporate entanglements of his late father (Campbell Scott, seen primarily in the opening sequence). It seems Pop had once teamed with evil scientist Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) on some nefarious scheme,
all of which leads to the tragic condition of his son, Harry (Dane DeHaan), the head of massive Osborn Industries, who now finds himself fatally sick. The pressure is enough to force Harry to experiment on himself, which turns him into the Green Goblin, and the deadly enemy of his childhood friend, Peter. And, lest we forget, Jamie Foxx languishes nearby in the near-anonymous role of Electro, a human Energizer Bunny who can suck a power grid dry. And poor Paul Giamatti can be found inside some strange robotic machine that takes perverse pleasure in shooting off its big guns. But that’s the kind of talent that a big-budget opus like Amazing 2 can dismissively dispose of when it’s all in the service of a boy working out his daddy issues.

pring Awakening brought 67 performers to auditions. That’s a big number for Music Theatre of Denton projects. “We had three auditions,” said co-director Vicki Kirkley. “At the last audition, we pulled the most difficult scenes from the show for them to do, because we knew that would show us what they could do.” Spring Awakening is the musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play about a group of youths in an insular German community. The teens confront cultural, religious and parental au-

thorities at the close of a century. Atheism, homosexuality, premarital sex and abortion test the ties that bind in a town where church and tradition make for a double yoke that constrains free-thinking and sensuality. John Norine, co-director and music director, said putting the tough scenes in front of prospective players was the best yardstick for the youthful corps that turned out to auditions. “It was a divining rod, really,” Norine said. “It’s one thing to say you’re up to the challenges of a show. It’s another thing to do it. We really wanted to see who would best be able to do it.” Kirkley saw Spring Awakening during a trip to New York and counts it the favorite of six Broad-
way shows she saw that summer. The musical bears an eerie resemblance to the American political and cultural landscape of the present. “The first scheduled performance of the play was in 1906, but it was banned before for scenes of homosexuality, violence and language, among other things,” Norine said. Spring Awakening isn’t for anyone with sensitivities about vulgar and profane language, sex and religious doubt. The musical surrounds the intellectual and sensual awakenings of teenagers Melchior Gabor (Aaron Jakaboski) and Wendla Bergmann (Josylynn Reid), who defy church and home when they become lovers. Kirkley said the themes and issues of Spring Awakening — angst, sexuality and uncertainty — are as relevant in the 21st century as they were at the close of the 19th century. The score bridges the gulf of 200 years. Pop-rock musician Duncan Sheik, best known for his 1996 Top 40 single “Barely Breathing,” wrote the score for Spring Awakening. The songs are monologues in the same way that Othello, Iago and Romeo turn to the audience in a scene and say what they’re really thinking.” The songs of Spring Awakening develop the characters, revealing their secrets and hopes. “Part of that, to me, is that the songs take them out of reality,” Mitchell said. “They can’t say what they really think to teachers or their parents. They can’t say what they want, what they want to do. The songs show how they feel, what’s going on.” Millea said the songs help the performers bring the characters from page to stage. “There is so much inner monologue, and the metaphors are just gorgeous in this show,” Millea said. “When she [Ilse] sings ‘spring and summer every other day’ to Moritz, what does that mean?’ She’s remembering her and Moritz as children, before her father started coming
into her bedroom. She’s convinced that he’s going to walk her home and help her make things right. But he can’t do that.” Reid said Wendla’s opening song is all about discovery — in spite of a mother who is too fearful to be honest. “It’s this character’s first chance to see who she really is,” Reid said. “She’s looking at her body in the mirror and really seeing herself as a woman for the first time. Even though her mother has never explained what’s happening to her, she’s noticing it.” Rausch, who returns to the Denton stage for the first time since becoming a mother, said she wrote a diary entry in the character’s voice reflecting on the aborted conversation about the birds and the bees. All Frau Bergmann can stammer out to
her daughter is that, in order to conceive a baby, a woman “must love her husband with all her heart.” “Frau Bergmann has probably never had that conversation, ever, I don’t think,” Rausch said. “I think everything she knows about it she probably learned on her wedding night. And I think she probably didn’t enjoy it.” Garza said Herr Stiefel can’t muster much empathy for his son, Moritz, either. Where Frau Bergmann dodges pain, Herr Stiefel plows over it like a bulldozer. “Moritz is a terrible student,” Garza said. “He acts terrible. He dresses horribly. Everything he does makes me look bad. And I don’t care what his issues are.” The design of the musical hints at its 1891 setting in costumes, wigs and makeup. The set is abstract — sloping ramps,
angled fences that suggest trees. Kirkley, who also is the lighting director, saturates the action with moody, color-rich lights. “We wanted it to be stylized but simple,” Kirkley said. “You can get bogged down with the realism of a show, but this isn’t that kind of show.” Jakaboski said Spring Awakening has earned its loyal following by leavening brutal honesty with possibility. “It’s a hopeful ending,” he said. Rausch wouldn’t predict a happily-ever-after. “I think they’ll be happier than their elders, at least,” she said. “Yeah, I think they could go on to be the change they want for themselves,” Pounds said.
