Philip Lamb, left, runs woodcut print-style projections from his laptop at a recent dress rehearsal for Music Theatre of Denton’s Fiddler on the Roof. The projections illustrate the buildings and settings of the musical’s scenes, projected from the technical booth in the Campus Theatre. Actors perform behind the screen in silhouette, too.

Tradition, revamped M
usic Theatre of Denton set out to give a familiar musical a fresh feeling. Fiddler on the Roof, a classic American musical and a familiar show for Denton audiences, opens this weekend — and it will look a little different. The company recruited graphic animator Philip Lamb, who created scenic visuals for Carousel several seasons ago for Denton Community Theatre. Director Jim Laney said creating the set with projected computer graphics was a chance to recreate the small Russian Jewish settlement of Anatevka. Lamb projects the streets,
Projections freshen up ‘Fiddler’ the gathering spots and the home and hearth of Tevye on a cyclorama, a special backdrop that measures 36 feet wide by 13 1/2 feet tall. “We wanted to keep things simple,” Laney said. “Other than the projections, we use the same benches and pieces in every scene. I actually thought about using a unit set, but the projections are simple, but do a lot of different things.” A unit set is a minimal set using flats, blocks, risers and ramps — usually painted a neutral color. A two-sided wedge in front
of the cyclorama gives the projections a three-dimensional appearance, with chimneys, walls and doorways projected onto them. Lamb said the projections ended up having an unintended look that compliments the show’s setting — Tsarist Russia in 1905. “It ended up looking like woodcut prints,” Lamb said. “That really suits the show, because woodcut is a very 1900s art form.” Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and May 11-12, and 2 p.m. Sunday and May 13 at the
Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for senior 62 and older, and $10 for children and students with ID. For reservations, call 940-3821915. The musical stars John Evarts as Tevye, Michelle Markle as Golde, Abi Abel as Tseitel, Tara Linn Hunter as Hodel, Emily Staniszewski as Chava and Carol Howdeshell as Yente. Pat Watson portrays Motel, Bryan Patrick plays Perchik, and Jon Weston Middleton plays the role of Fyedka. Ray Staniszewski is the musical director, and Bradley Speck designed the lighting. — Lucinda Breeding

Santawaska Key Lime Pie is a long name for the duo that is University of North Texas art professor Kenneth John Verdugo, right, and Jeffrey Gascon Bello. The upcoming exhibition at UNT on the Square is Verdugo’s visual response to Bello’s compositions.
Dirge of progress Artist reflects on U.S. ambivalence in the digital age “An Industrial American Dirge,” a multimedia installation, opens Friday at the UNT on the Square gallery. The installation opens with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a live performance at 7:30 p.m. Another live performance is
slated for May 10. Artist Kenneth John Verdugo, a scene design and digital imaging assistant professor at the University of North Texas, said the installation carries messages about technology, American values, the treatment of women, American reliance on oil, reflection of the 9/11 memorial and enjoying life’s pleasures. An aesthetic visual response to music composed by Jeffrey Gascon Bello, the installation is told in four movements, using
digital video, percussion instruments, large-scale acrylic paintings, small digital images, sketches and renderings and found objects. All those elements, which may not have much in common, are collaged to form a narrative, a poetic device known as “the exquisite corpse,” Verdugo said. “It’s sort of a collection of a number of ideas, thoughts that deal with social issues,” he said. The last 10 years Verdugo has been a scene artist.

Denton’s Renzo means to master the game T he showcase scheduled for Friday night at Hailey’s is about more than the music. Lorenzo Cheadle, better known as Renzo, the Denton emcee and kingpin of local

label Street Hop, said the Street Hop showcase is about the ethos behind Denton hiphop. Street Hop was established in June 2007 under the business name Street Hop International. Since then, the label and production company has been the machine representing Renzo and his music. And then it grew. “I planned it out,” Renzo said, talking rapid-fire over the phone. “I was into music since I was a kid. I’m very stubborn, very hard-headed. I didn’t have a father or father figure, and I’m the youngest of four kids. I was hard-headed, I decided I wanted to make my own music. “If you want things done, you gotta do ’em yourself. You don’t have to be with me if you don’t want. I didn’t want anyone to have control over me. I decided I didn’t care how much it takes. I started doing my thing, my first mix tape, and it got immediate response.” Renzo said he meant for Street Hop to be a solo gig, a business that managed his music and his marketing. The emcee said rising musicians making hip-hop in Denton aren’t going to let him keep Street Hop to himself. “I didn’t plan to work with other artists, but if I do, it’s

J-Whoa and Smitty (a.k.a. lil Ben) will spit verse Friday night at “Street Hop Presents The Show.” Though JWhoa and Smitty aren’t on the Street Hop label, they’re longtime friends of founder Renzo, who designed the show to serve up a taste of Denton’s hip-hop scene. because I’ve got love for you and what you do,” he said. Saturday night’s Street Hop showcase features three label members — Renzo, X and June. Artists Smitty (a.k.a. lil Ben) and J-Whoa from Dream Team will perform along with other friends. Marcus Washington, who works with Street Hop, said the showcase features only local talent. “Denton hip-hop has been around for years,” Washington said. “It’s just getting noticed now.” Both Washington and Renzo said the attention is the result of hard hustling from the artists themselves. Since Street Hop was created, it’s dropped a lot of music. These days, Renzo said, Street Hop releases new music every month and a half. Like most Denton hiphop, the music is free — and it’s bait. “It’s not just rapping. If you think you’re going to
make money because you can rap, you’re wrong,” the artist said. “Why are you so different from the next rapper? I took that motto from the big game and put it on my own. “Music leads to a buzz. Buzz leads to a CD, which leads to a T-shirt, which leads to a show. I’m a student of the game, and I’m here to tell you we don’t need to take this to another city,” he said. “We can do it here.” The showcase has a flavor for just about every taste. There’s hip-hop for hard-core party people, chilled-out music for people who prefer their music to be made of milder energy. There’s a little something for people who like a little danger in their hip-hop, too. Details: Doors open at 9 p.m. Friday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. OPENING FRIDAY The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye (##1/2) This quirky documentary offers a brisk and breezy look at Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his wife and collaborator, Lady Jaye, painting a picture of the pair both before and after their sexual transformations for their Pandrogyne project. The erratically engaging pair make for compelling viewing. Not rated, 65 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Bernie (##1/2) Jack Black is the picture of silliness in this whimsical, fact-based film set in Carthage. He plays a good-natured, well-loved funeral home employee who befriends a local widow (Shirley MacLaine) known for her meanness and stinginess. But with Bernie, she blossoms, taking him on trips and spending money freely. That is, until she turns up dead. Matthew McConaughey plays the eventual prosecutor. Directed by Richard Linklater. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. Sound of My Voice (##) Smallscale film about a pair of twentysomething documentary filmmakers going undercover to expose the leader of a cult (Brit Marling) who claims to be from the future. Plot turns on the male (Christopher Denham) beginning to believe the futuristic claims. This slow-moving hunk of hokum is filled with irritating characters, stilted dialogue and New Age nonsense. Rated R, 85 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.
NOW PLAYING The Cabin in the Woods (###) Five friends follow a horror film formula by gathering for a weekend at a cabin in the woods. Carnage is expected, and is delivered, but not before co-writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, who also directs, turn the tables with several unexpected twists. With Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A. Chimpanzee This nature documentary follows a baby chimpanzee and his family as they survive in the African forest. Directed by Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield. Rated G, 78 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

Comic book hero smorgasbord serves up something to marvel at
By Boo Allen Film Critic
The summer silly season kicks off with The Avengers, the new computer-effects driven adventure based on Marvel Comics’ superheroes. The convoluted saga brings together under one title many, if not all, of Marvel’s cartoonish creations. Think of it as the Hollywood equivalent of the NBA All-Star Game. Joss Whedon, the inspired creator of such semi-earthly TV fare as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Angel, wrote the Avengers screenplay and directed, showing a steady hand when dealing with otherworldly beings but a somewhat shakier one when streamlining his own narrative. The sprawling story by Whedon and Zak Penn is captive to the needs of Marvel’s exalted world. The writers’ task was to assemble various heroes into a coherent story while still doling out enough screen time to individual superheroes of the Marvel stable, many of whom have their own movie franchises. They succeed, but the results vary. A supervillain is demanded for anyone facing this group of supercharged figures. The bad guy, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) says, “is not from around here.” Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hails from another planet, one where he was a god and was brother to Thor (Chris Hemsworth). And he’s a hard man to put down. Loki has come to Earth to conquer it, of course, but also to steal the movie’s MacGuffin, a shiny object capable of being a perpetual energy source. Or something. It doesn’t really matter, because what it mainly does is allow Commander Fury to bring together Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson),
Disney

who seems to have no superpowers beyond her good looks. Whedon bogs down the film’s early parts with lengthy
and unnecessary stretches of pseudo-scientific jargon. Footage of Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) trading quips with everyone becomes tedious in a neartwo-and-a-half-hour opus. When the film finally shifts into action mode, it becomes impressive, with a series of gargantuan set pieces, such as flying submarines for the good guys and a series of attacking machine-like monsters for the
bad guys. The in-between filler varies, with Loki’s garish costumes looking inspired more from comic books than Marc Jacobs. And some of the outerplanetary settings look drab and downright chintzy. But these are mostly minor quibbles in a huge production that seems to want to offer something for everyone and, for the most part, achieves that goal.

Denton’s Cinco de Mayo celebration begins with a parade at 10 a.m. Saturday on the downtown Square. Local lowrider clubs show off their cars, students show their pride in their heritage, and La Reina, the queen of the fest, and her court will pass by with a wave and a smile. Families with children should bring a bag, because parade participants throw lots of candy.

Make a circuit of Quakertown Park on Saturday and you’ll be able to select tacos made with carnitas (braised, roasted pork pulled from the bone by hand — oh, yeah), cabrito (meat from milk-fed goats), fajita steak and chicken. Top ’em with pico de gallo, cilantro and minced onion. Shredded cheese and sour cream tends to be scarcer at this festival. But expect fantastic, rich and whipped guacamole. Now, let’s talk tortilla. At Denton Cinco de Mayo, patrons can watch music while noshing on soft flour tortillas, crunching on hardened corn See CINCO on 10

DENTON CINCO DE MAYO
If you like something a little less nutritious for dessert, don’t fret. Virtually every Denton Cinco de Mayo we’ve attended has attracted the men who push around carts brimming with paletas, bells jingling. Our favorite is the paleta de coco, or the coconut ice pop. It’s cool, it’s sweet and reminiscent of a piña colada. And there are bits of coconut frozen into the treat. If you loathe coconut, go for the berry-flavored pops.
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday Where: Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St. Details: The event begins with a parade on the Square. Free. On the Web: www.denton cinco.org
Borracho beans Some of the best Mexican pinto beans we’ve ever tasted were ladled up at Denton Cinco de Mayo. Borracho beans are pinto beans cooked slowly with salt pork or bacon, onion, garlic and sometimes tomato, ham or sausages, chiles and cilantro. Served as a soup, borracho beans will keep you warm, and in a cup they are handy to tote around from booth to booth. Note: This dish is also sometimes called frijoles charro.
Fajitas, fajitas, fajitas Denton Cinco de Mayo brings back memories of flimsy paper plates made soggy from the seasoned and sizzling mix of chicken or steak with onions and slivers of bell peppers. The festival promises all the required toppers, too — pico, cilantro, green chile sauce and
MOVIES Continued from Page 8 The Five-Year Engagement (##1/2) The problem that plagues so many Judd Apatow productions — the one that keeps good comedies from being great ones — unfortunately exists here. The Five-Year Engagement is so scattered and overlong, it really feels like it lasts five years, despite the inherent likability of stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. guacamole. As is the ritual, diners can cut some of the heat and the spice with a squeeze of a lime wedge. The festival usually finds fajitas wrapped in flour tortillas bought in bulk. Nothing special, but just the texture you need to even out the moisture and marinade from the meat. We’re serious about the flimsy plates. Either embrace the mess or eat fast.
Mango wedges with chile powder We first saw this Mexican curiosity at Denton Cinco de Mayo. We asked a fellow attendee where we could find a sweet finish to our feasting, and we were pointed to the vendor who was slicing melons and mangos and stuffing them into

Denton Cinco de Mayo vendors serve up portable fare like tacos — and even fajitas — for hungry festivalgoers. a plastic cup. The fruit slices were dusted with a rust-colored powder. We figured it for cinnamon, but no. Chile powder. Sound gross? Hold that thought. You know how salt can bring out the brighter notes of a sweet foodstuff? Like chocolate-covered pretzels or
yogurt-dipped nuts? Well, the chile powder makes the refreshing, clean taste of the fruit leap up. You can get the fruit slices without the powder, and we noticed some folks salting their fruit — same principle as the chile powder.
Can you call it Cinco de Mayo without a cold Mexican beer served with your choice of a dash of salt and a lime wedge for chaser (or additive)? We think not. Sure, there is always domestic beer at the festival, but you can also find Mexican brews on the park grounds. We just ask one thing: Should you choose to partake, agree on a designated driver. Sunshine and a day’s worth of beer — domestic or imported — are a recipe for disaster. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.
