Poor Kings charm Twilight Tunes with folksy pop he Poor Kings made their Twilight Tunes debut last year. The Dallas five-piece returns today with its polished pop-folk rock and radio-worthy guitar hooks. Fronted by the buttersmooth vocalist Mike Marshall, the band makes the kind of music that appeals to both folk fans and the easy-listening set. Anchored by Marshall, guitarist and keyboard player Michael Armstrong and drummer Ben Holt, who sharpened his chops with 7 Channels, the Poor Kings’ sound is fleshed out with Chris Peake’s bass and Erik Herbst’s guitar. “Me and You and the Snow” shows the band’s folksy side in a love song delivered with an ever-so-slight twang of guitar and mid-range keys. In “Let Me Be There for You,” the Poor Kings trot out expert song-crafting, from easy, soft drumming to alt-country harmonies. Vocally, Marshall sounds like a second cousin to John Mayer, and musically, the band could easily share a bill with Folk Angel, the sonically mature band that spun out of the worship team at the Village Church in Flower Mound. Austin’s Megafauna — from left, bassist Greg Yancey, guitarist and lead singer Dani Neff and drummer Zack Humphrey — plays Saturday night at Dan’s Silverleaf.
Austin trio shreds, with poetry in soul By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
Austin prog-metal trio Megafauna makes a stop in Denton on Saturday night. The band is touring in support of its sophomore album, Maximalist, released in April. Bandmates Dani Neff, the lead singer and guitar shredderin-chief, and drummer Zack Humphrey said the new record shows a band that’s put in some hours and sweat equity. “It’s tricky because, when you have a lineup change, it throws things into disarray,” Humphrey said, musing over the evolution from the band’s debut. “There are a lot of questions when you have a new lineup, about playing with one another. Just having new players in the band, it will distinguish this record from the first. I think Megafauna has gotten a little tighter. The first one was looser, more improvisational. I’m excited to be working on this.” Megafauna made the record
with producer Dwight Baker (Blue October, Bob Schneider), and Humphrey and Neff said the producer pressed for their best, even when they thought they were spent. Maximalist plays like a concept album, as if Neff sings from the point of view of a vulnerable soul who’s stumbled into the dangerous side of town only to find it’s as fascinating as it is frightening. But Neff said the record is broader than that, and that the songs are about searching for yourself and seeing yourself in half-shadow. The trio wanted to bring the intensity of its live show to the record. “It’s a lot easier said than done,” Humphrey said. “I think we know you have a connection with the audience. I think it’s important to me to be confident in the music. Even if you play a show for five people, in my mind, you try to really match it. I feel like it’s almost like Method acting. You get into this head space. It can be hard to capture

— part of that is the skill of the engineer.” Neff said Maximalist will probably read a little less prog to the band’s followers. “I think I’ve gotten more confident in my singing,” she said. “These songs are a collection of songs I’ve written over the years — some of which I wrote five years ago. ‘Haunted Factory’ was total collaboration. Most of them, I had the lyrics and the melody.” The record has the dark, moody industrial feel associated with Evanescence and Machines of Loving Grace. Neff’s vocals surprise in their choir-girl innocence and purity. “I guess that’s just how my voice is,” Neff said. “I’m very attracted to Nirvana and hard rock. It just so happens that my voice is the way it is, I guess. I do scream certain parts of some
songs.” Neff said the songwriting is both a response to inspiration — she’ll feel a vocal melody — and stream of consciousness. “Or I’ll have, like, a poem and I’ll work around it,” Neff said. “My lyrics are based on personal experience.” Fans of Denton’s I Am Man, I Am Monster would appreciate the musical through-line of Megafauna’s Maximalist. The album is alternately obsessed with the cold, mechanical nature of culture and pulled toward human connection. It’s apparent even from the titles “Hug From a Robot,” “Haunted Factory” and “Touch the Lion.” The guitar work is intricate and musical, often mimicking the interplay of orchestra and violin in concerti. “I think that comes from our musical background and what we listen to,” Humphrey said. “When you listen to Megafauna, you’re getting some depth. We try to push ourselves — I think we crave that depth and complexity.”

No ticket to ride irector Daniel Skaggs first screened his documentary about people who hop freight trains to travel — without much more than the clothes they’re wearing — during Thin Line, the yearly documentary film and music festival in Denton. Skaggs returns to Denton for an encore screening at 10 p.m. Sunday at Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor, 308 E. Oak St. In the summer of 2011, armed with HD cameras and audio recorders, Skaggs hopped a freight train out of Missoula, Mont. As a partner in Highway Goat Productions, he raised $14,000 through crowdfunding websites IndieGoGo and Kickstarter. Freeload has screened at six film festivals, including Thin Line, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Independent Film Festival of Boston and Queens World Film Festival, where it won Best Feature Documentary. Skaggs answered some questions about the documentary.
‘Freeload’ travels the rails with modern-day hobos and nomads

Denton Time: Does the documentary attempt to justify the 21st-century freight train riders? The documentary is titled Freeload. Skaggs: Freeload does not try to justify modern train riders in any way. It is a portrait film about a handful of young riders that offers the audience an intimate view of the day-to-day struggle. Life on the road is gritty and unpredictable. We came up with the title before we ever started to shoot the film. The title stuck, and we didn’t want to change it. What drew you to this story, and these people? I had been traveling and riding trains for nearly a decade. Over time, I developed an obsession with freight trains and the people that ride them. I’m what they call a “foamer.”
Photos by Highway Goat Productions
Filmmaker Daniel Skaggs calls himself a “foamer” — a die-hard railroad enthusiast. His documentary “Freeload,” about people who travel the rails, returns to Denton for a screening Sunday at Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor. (Google that one.) I spent weeks and months at a time traversing the country with some very compelling characters. We swapped tales of madness under bridges and in train yards. The art of storytelling is a crucial element to this nomadic lifestyle. I knew that someday I wanted to give these people a chance to tell their stories to a larger audience. Finally, that day came. [NOTE: A foamer is a serious railroad buff who might take part in “trainspotting,” a hobby of recording sightings of different trains and freight, and taking risks to photograph trains.] In making this documentary, did you gain any insight into poverty? Do you think your subjects chose to be broke? Making Freeload opened my eyes even more on the disconnect between the rich

People that live in poverty understand the daily struggles that most of us encounter. I believe that poverty was created by the wealthy to control every aspect of society. It’s a rich man’s world. I think the guys and gals in Freeload
do choose to be broke. They would be doing the same thing if they had money, just with more class. Any estimates on how many freight train riders are moving about the country? This is always a tough ques-
tion. I would say between 500 to 1,000 but I don’t really know. Ignorant question: Are the U.S. railways pretty much encapsulated by the U.S. geography, or do they cross over into Canada and South America? That is not an ignorant question at all. Canada, America and Mexico have connecting railroads. Freight trains cross the border every day in both directions. North America has a massive network of railways traveling in every direction. I have been studying railroad logistics for over a decade. Why bring Freeload back to Denton? I fell in love with Denton. It is a very special place. I also became friends with the guys down at the Oak Street Draft House. I feel honored to rescreen Freeload in your beautiful city.

OPENING FRIDAY Million Dollar Arm ( 1⁄2) There’s something about a baseball movie that just invites corniness. And so it is with Disney’s Million Dollar Arm, yet somehow, this flaw doesn’t feel like the biggest crime — especially when you have a high-quality cast at work. Real-life sports agent JB Bernstein (Mad Men’s Jon Hamm) and his partner Ash (the always entertaining Aasif Mandvi) bring two young Indian men (Madhur Mittal and Suraj Sharma) to America in hopes of creating the next international baseball sensation. Will the two players overcome their lack of training, their nervousness and the cynical baseball press corps to have their moment of glory? Will Bernstein realize that there’s something more important than making money? Uh, have you ever seen a baseball movie? With Alan Arkin, Bill Paxton and Lake Bell. Directed by Craig Gillespie. Effects-heavy ‘Godzilla’ squashes human story
Denton Time
By Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle
Godzilla, that tail-swinging menace from the deep, is back with a pair of friends, in a movie that comes in two distinct waves. The first wave is all people; the second wave, longer, is all monsters — and also people looking up at monsters and running down the block screaming. They’re screaming in Japan, then in Honolulu and then in Las Vegas. And just as you’re thinking about the Golden Gate Bridge, the monsters are tearing through San Francisco, too, swinging tails and crushing buildings. After all, why go to the beach to stomp around, when every metropolis has a downtown just waiting to get destroyed? We’ll leave it to the psychiatrists to figure out why our most popular entertainments in recent years depict the toppling and smashing of our landmarks. Is this a healthy outlet for fear or some mass neurosis that’s so widespread that no one calls it what it is? In either case, what’s particularly weird about Godzilla is that for long stretches, all it shows is destruction. We get the obligatory context, followed by monster fights — just stuff getting smashed and knocked down. Yet for the first 45 minutes, Godzilla promises to be something better than that. Brian Cranston plays a scientist in Ja-

pan, working in a nuclear plant. Like all fun characters at the beginning of a monster movie, he notices something on his computer. Something very wrong. In those first 45 minutes, Godzilla has everything a monster movie needs. There’s the one man who knows the truth. There’s a monster of legendary proportions. And there are painful and dramatic encounters between human beings. It’s pretty clear that nobody broke the
news to Cranston that Godzilla was slated to be a throwaway summer movie. He’s red-faced, terrified, anguished, enraged — he plays every scene like it’s the last season of Breaking Bad. But this is a summer movie, despite whatever the calendar might tell you, and so the focus must switch to younger characters. So we get Aaron TaylorJohnson as Cranston’s son, a lieutenant specializing in disarming bombs, and Elizabeth Olsen as his wife. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to write either of them a personality, probably on the assumption that it doesn’t take much charm to run full-out while stealing the occasional backward glance. In fact, that’s
when individuality is needed most. It’s too vague to ask an audience to care about the fate of humanity, but every Godzilla movie must have at least two people you absolutely, positively do not want to see get stepped on. This has no one. TaylorJohnson’s idea of playing a military guy is to have a stone face, and all Olsen gets to do is fret. Perhaps director Gareth Edwards concentrated too much on the action to worry about the performances. In any case, for at least 75 minutes of the movie, there’s not a single moment of human peril that’s made vivid or consequential. It’s all just spectacle, whether it’s people or buildings getting destroyed.
Going good enton Parks & Recreation continues its free summer Movies in the Park series. This Friday, the family can watch Universal Pictures’ animated feature Despicable Me 2. Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) tries to adjust to family life when the Anti-Villain League recruits him to — what else? — save the world, with the help of partner Lucy (Kristen Wiig). A marshmallow roast and crafts start at 8 p.m. Friday in Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St., and the outdoor movie starts at 9 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Despicable Me is rated PG, 98 minutes.

Lilith (Florencia Bado) and her father, Enzo (Diego Peretti), are Argentines who unwittingly befriend Josef Mengele in “The German Doctor.”
Brush with evil
Specter of Holocaust visits family in ‘German Doctor’
Helmut Gregor, the title character of The German Doctor, seems like a nice enough fellow. He smiles a lot, albeit a little creepily, is friendly, says the right things, and pays extra attention to children — perhaps too much attention to children. Helmut (Alex Brendemuhl) is not a child molester, or at lease not in the usual sense. Instead, he is Josef Mengele, the notorious “Angel of Death,” the German doctor who experimented on prisoners, primarily twins, in Nazi concentration camps. He seems bland enough to personify Hannah Arendt’s famous description of Adolf Eichmann,
“the banality of evil.” The German Doctor is based on a true story, but history works against the film. It is well documented that Mengele escaped to South America after World War II, jumping from Argentina to Paraguay and perhaps other locales before drowning in Brazil in 1979. Knowing that this demon eludes capture in Argentina shades any attempt at building a narrative based on his eventual capture. But enough drama can be found in director Lucia Puenzo’s script to sustain the story of a family meeting Helmut when father Enzo (Diego Peretti) becomes caretaker at a beautiful lakeside resort in rural Argentina. Helmut arrives about the same time, taking a room for six
months. He befriends the family, particularly the mother, Eva (Natalia Oreiro), pregnant with twins. Helmut also pays special attention to 12-year-old Lilith (Florencia Bado), whose small body causes her to suffer abuse and ridicule from schoolmates. Helmut offers his help — an uncomfortable assistance since the viewer knows his identity even if
the family does not. Before long, Mengele has Eva taking his strange drugs for her pregnancy, while he also treats Lilith with his bogus growth hormones. Lilith enjoys Helmut’s friendship, lending resonance to her post-event narration, as she pours over Mengele’s illustrated journals. Only safely after his departure does she finally recognize his identity and his evil. A heavy-handed subplot simultaneously plays out about Mengele assisting Enzo’s creation of ceramic dolls, as though they were live creatures Mengele could breathe life into. Finally, Enzo and his family count themselves among the lucky ones who encountered the devil and lived to talk about it.

COVER STORY
Gomez, earthbound Artist’s fifth record is ‘Underfoot’ and reaching for heavens By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
n his fifth solo album, Robert Gomez considers things great and small. And in spite of its gravity-bound title, Earth Underfoot soars musically and poetically. The respected Denton guitarist and Francophile (the local music scene practically owes its awareness and appreciation of Serge Gainsbourg to Gomez) put the record together while finishing his degree at the University of North Texas, wrapping and promoting his fourth record, Severance Songs, and making the sophomore album with Ormonde, his creative partnership with Seattle songstress Anna-Lynne Williams. The duo’s debut album drifted to the top five on the iTunes indie rock downloads. “When we were recording the record, I was pretty exhausted,” Gomez said. “I was basically at school at 8 in the morning. I’d get out at 1 o’clock and go record until like 1 in the morning, like midnight or 1. And then do that all again the next day.” Earth Underfoot was funded with a micro-budget of $2,458 on Kickstarter, with the help of about 50 backers. It drops June 10, but Gomez will have CDs available at his local release show on Friday night at Dan’s Silverleaf. It’s also a farewell show, as the musician is moving to Seattle. Gomez recorded the record with Baptist Generals member Peter Salisbury on guitar, Aaron McClellan on bass, Evan Jacobs on keyboards and piano, and Steve Hill on drums. It’s the band Gomez has been playing with for about a year and a half. In terms of sound, Earth is a logical progression from his second solo record, Pine Sticks and Phosphorous, and Severance Songs. The meat and potatoes of the record is Gomez’s fluent guitar and soulful poetry. Lush and restrained, Earth continues the artist’s catalog of brooding and colorful songs. It does, however, mark a departure for Gomez. “It was an interesting process for me because, normally, I’m just by myself

was really just done live for the most part. I’d go in with my band, and we just went in and we just played live, and whatever came out, that’s just the way it was.” This is also the first time Gomez has recruited a producer. He and Los Angeles producer-engineer Theo Karon struck up a mutual respect online. When Gomez went to L.A. as a member of Sarah Jaffe’s band for a plum slot on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he met up with Karon. “We hung out some and I told him, ‘Man, we should work on a record togeth-
er,’ and he said, ‘I’d totally love that,’” Gomez recalled. Karon produced, mixed and mastered Earth Underfoot. “That was another departure for me, to allow someone to basically be in control of the music, and say, ‘This is working, this is not working,’” Gomez said. “And it helps take the pressure off a little bit, because when you’re in there trying to make music, it’s hard to really know if it’s good See GOMEZ on 10

Gomez enough, or if it’s as good as it could be. It’s hard to have any perspective when you’re in the middle of it.” Karon managed to boost Gomez’s vocals, a boon when considering the artist’s restrained approach to the microphone. In earlier albums, it’s easier to let Gomez’s vocals become more of an instrument than a storyteller. Salisbury and Gomez still give guitar primacy, but it’s a nice change to hear the lyrics without eyes-closed concentration. Together, the guitarists show a knack for the instrument’s many dialects. The guitar is a democratic instrument. It can speak metal, folk and flamenco. And while Gomez and Salisbury clearly weren’t trying to punch out a world music record, they didn’t make one dimensional songs. “Out Alive” builds into an altrock crescendo during the bridge, and “Two Teeth” could easily dance its way into a folksy jig. “Tersus,” one of a few instrumental songs on the record, uses the guitars like the wheels on a train. In “Tersus,” the star of the show is a moody keyboard effect, a chimey theremin that gives way to electro-acoustic blorping sounds in “Still Alive.” “I mean, we definitely tried to get interesting sounds,” Gomez said. “I feel like every band tries

TRACK BY TRACK ROBERT GOMEZ, “EARTH UNDERFOOT” “Out Alive” — Gorgeous and yearning, this track is probably among the finest songs Robert Gomez has written. Rhythm guitar and drums are a steady pulse throughout the song. But like a time-lapse film of an opening flower, it bubbles into a bright, slightly messy explosion of guitars. You know that great guitar solo in the Pixies’ “Where is My Mind?” “Out Alive” moves along that kind of arc. Controlled, measured and then comes a moment of blissed-out, clangy noise. It’s like Gomez went to church, but without the bells and smells — just the sensation of billowing like a mushroom cloud. “Kaboom” — “We’re two birds on a wire,” Gomez sings on this track, the one that gets closest to Gomez sounding like he might be nursing a chip on his shoulder. Or is it regret? Gomez can come off like a detached observer in his own songs, but not in “Kaboom.” The narrator addresses a close compatriot. Both are “out in the cold, caught out in the cold./Bury the gun, girl. Destroy the evidence/Change our names and burn to ash.” A throaty twang throbs against a hollow-bellied drum. Strings and winds meld with smoldering guitars as the song burns into a fade-to-black ending. “Ghost” — Gomez considers this track the “problem child” of the record. The artist said he found the tune hard to wrangle, but you’d never know. Like its title, though, this tune doesn’t lurk unnoticed in closets or stay tame. It’s playful, a little unruly, and evocative. It’s one of the album’s uptempo tracks, with tricky little harmonies that, though unexpected, can still remind and delight. Gomez makes subtle music, and “Ghost” is an example of how a song can take up room — like a rock anthem — but without screaming or caterwauling. — Lucinda Breeding
to get interesting sounds, for the most part. But I think I also benefited a lot from Peter Salisbury’s presence on the record. I think that having two approaches to electric guitar helps open it up a bit. This is a very electric guitar-
based record. I mean, there’s not much acoustic on it, which is kind of different for me. Although Severance, I thought, was a bit of a departure in that way as well. But this one is more so in that direction.”

Gomez and the band recorded Earth Underfoot over 10 days at Redwood Studios, the laboratory of Denton’s McKenzie Smith, a founding member of Midlake, and Denton’s Joey McClellan, a touring member of Midlake and a member of Hymns, the band that’s backed the legendary Daniel Johnston. Gomez said the band went into Redwood and played live, trying to record in one or two takes. With Karon taking care of the engineering for the recording, Gomez said he put his attention into playing and listening to his band. “Most tracks were all first, second takes,” he said. “There’s definitely times when maybe subsequent takes were a bit more refined, but they kind of lost a little bit of that initial spontaneity, or at least that energy that you get that’s only available, I feel, on the first few, first couple of takes. After a while it starts to taper off. “So even if it’s not perfect, I feel like its representative of the music, rather than a more ‘perfect’ take that came much later.” Gomez wanted Earth to be a cohesive record that would articulate what was in his head and heart, he said. Thematically, he said the 13 tracks represent his taking stock. “I feel a lot of the songs have some of the same words in them. I wouldn’t say they have the same message, but a lot of the songs are coming from the same place — which is basically, you
know, here I am now in my late 30s kind of starting to take stock of where I am at this moment. As I approach the midpoint,” he said. Earth Underfoot is certainly informed by Gomez’s jazz guitar studies, and infused with the work he’s written and played before. But Gomez said his songwriting is a sort of stream-ofconsciousness process. And in Earth, lyrics and music were written together. “Whenever I write music, I try to forget any kind of schooling, any type of influence,” Gomez said. “I never go into it with ‘I’m going for this sound.’ I just try to let it come out naturally. Maybe while you’re in the midst of it and you have some perspective, you can listen to it and sort of see where influences are coming from. “But I wouldn’t say it’s thoughtless music, but I try not to get bogged down in form or style or genre, or harmony or melody, or anything like that. I’m going to try like anyone else. I sit down with the guitar many times — or an instrument — and I sing something and words come out, and it’s kind of like how everybody does it.” Gomez said he plans to spend the near future playing and promoting Earth Underfoot. He expects to release the upcoming Ormonde record this fall.
