The North Texas Songwriters Festival brings all-original acoustic music to fill the garages of the Pilot Point Community Opera House. This year’s festival is a two-day event.

House of song Musicians to jam in Pilot Point for two-day festival

T

he fourth annual North Texas Songwriters Festival, benefiting the Pilot Point Community Opera House, has grown this year. The event is a two-day festival this weekend, with all-original acoustic music performed by nearly 50 artists, including 2012 Texas Music Awards

Album of the Year recipient, Scotty Thurman. The headlining guests perform on Sunday, with emerging artists and local musicians performing on Saturday. The music starts 6 p.m. Saturday and runs from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the opera house, at 110 S. Washington St. The show is free. Food will be sold by Magnolia Station and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, and beer, wine and liquor will also be sold. The annual festival is a bene-

fit to restore the community opera house, which has been used as several businesses, to its roots as a performing arts and events venue. The stages are set up inside the opera house garages — vestiges of its earlier incarnation as a car dealership. Audiences simply hold their spot on the downtown square while coordinators change acts between garages. For more information, visit http://pilotpointcoh.org. — Staff report

f you like R&B with a jazzy twist and some jump blues, Denton’s Twilight Tunes can oblige you today with B Luv and the Money Makers. OPENING FRIDAY Battleship (###) This is big, dumb fun that knows it’s big, dumb fun and enthusiastically embraces its big, dumb, fun nature. Director Peter Berg has crafted an almost fetishistic homage to Michael Bay — like the Transformers series, this is yet another action extravaganza inspired by a Hasbro product — with its epic set pieces, swaggering bravado, panoramic skies and cheesy romance. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) joins the Navy at the insistence of his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgard). A certain gorgeous blonde named Sam (Brooklyn Decker) also provides some inspiration. Flash-forward and Alex is a lieutenant on one Naval destroyer while Stone is the commanding officer of another. Both answer to Adm. Shane (a withering, well-cast Liam Neeson), who happens to be Sam’s father. They’re all taking part in some international war games off the Hawaiian coast when a satellite signal provokes some angry extraterrestrials. Rated PG-13, 131 minutes. — The Associated Press Elles (##1/2) Juliette Binoche stars in this French-language film as Anne, a writer who investigates two female students (Anais Demoustier and Joanna Kulig) who have become prostitutes. Anne interviews them at length, giving director Malgoska Szumowska the opportunity to present a series of titillating scenes. Anne’s investigation causes her to question her own life, but not much else of import takes place. Not rated, 96 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen What to Expect When You’re Expecting (##1/2) If only the entire movie had focused on the dads’ group and didn’t just drop in on them a handful of times, we might have been onto something here. Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon and Rob Huebel are among the dudes who meet regularly to push their kids in tricked-out strollers, tote them in high-end carriers and talk guy stuff in a confidential setting away from the wives. Their banter livens up what is a rather predictable and cliched depiction of pregnancy. A likable, good-looking cast of popular actors can only do so much with material that’s superficial and sitcommy.

Sacha Baron Cohen portrays Adm. Gen. Aladeen, leader of the fictional oil-rich African country of Wadiya, in The Dictator.

Extremely loud and incredibly coarse By Boo Allen Film Critic

Sacha Baron Cohen may be the funniest man on the planet. In The Dictator, he expands his repertoire, showing he knows how to carry a movie without resorting to his notorious alter egos. Known best for his films Borat and Bruno, based on the corrosive personalities from his British TV program Da Ali G Show, Cohen breaks new ground in The Dictator. Here, he creates yet another absurd character who then follows a script, albeit one that complements his madcap style. Cohen eschews his guerrilla filmmaking and relies on the outline provided by a quartet of writers, including himself. Cohen again sagely leaves the directing to free-wheeling Larry Charles, an inspired

‘Dictator’ commands laughs with Cohen’s squirm-worthy humor comic helmsman who has worked with Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher and other loose cannons. Cohen plays Adm. Gen. Aladeen, the ruler of Wadiya, a fictional oil-rich African country. The general shares much with Borat and Bruno. Aladeen is a clueless fish-out-of-water character, who always says and does whatever is most offensive. After beginning with a montage that could have come from Woody Allen’s Bananas or Zelig, The Dictator revolves around Gen. Aladeen coming to the U.S. to address the United Nations. Once here, he unintentionally loses his trademark beard,

forcing him to adopt another identity since no one believes he is the Wadiyan general. He becomes Allison Burgers and finds refuge with a dedicated feminist (the always-game Anna Faris) running a health food store, of sorts, in Brooklyn. From there, the general plots to foil his renegade underling (Ben Kingsley), kill his body double, and take back his country. But of course, the general follows formulaic narrative rules and first falls in love so he can eventually become a cuddly, changed man. It is doubtful anyone could have squeezed more out of the same script as Cohen does. He somehow magnifies his insults

The Dictator Rated R, 83 minutes. Opens Friday.

and crass behavior. Yet, while watching him, the viewer never forgets that The Dictator is nothing more than a broad farce in which all words and gestures are exaggerated. Cohen and Charles use their talent well, slotting in comic pros as needed, such as John C. Reilly as a torture expert, J.B. Smoove and Aasif Mandvi in small roles, and Gary Shandling in a mimed cameo. Like Borat and Bruno, The Dictator is not for the timid or the easily offended, but it will bring plenty of laughs.

Brave Combo celebrates its melting pot of sounds By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor

ho ever would have thought Carl Finch would submit his racing vibrato to the pop music effect juggernaut that is AutoTune? It’s not that the founder of Denton’s hardworking and Grammy-winning polka band deplores anything and everything that gets a rise out of “the

kids,” because Finch doesn’t apologize for following a trend that’s worth it — namely approving the use of Brave Combo’s brain-dazzling music on television shows or hitting that Oasis of All That Is Gauche (that would be Las Vegas, folks). But Auto-Tune? It might be a similar program that makes the human voice sound like it’s coming through

supersonic fan blades, but Finch lets her rip on a single song on the band’s latest album, Sounds of the Hollow. “Where I Belong” is a manic tune that propels the lead singer through sweet melodies and an especially reflective poem about home and how to find it. In the end, the otherworldly voice is an apt one for the lyrics that prompt the listener to let go of all

those old attachments and learn how to live in the moment. “All I want to do is be,” Finch sings. By the end of the song — which has an indelible melody — we want the same. Hollow was produced by Eugene Swick on DenTone Records, and it clocks in with a beefy 19 tracks. But See COMBO on 10

don’t be cowed; Brave Combo — which has yet another roster for this latest LP, with Ginny Mac on the accordion — cushions standard polka-length songs with nuggets of music that serve as a fun-loving, sci-fistyle teleporter to the next song. Funny thing is, all the songs were born and bred on Earth. We begin with a Latin American cumbia with “Baby, Baby, Baby, Don’t,” a tune Brave Combo has been playing live of late, then move into a waltz. The band turns out a tango with “History of a Love,” a mambo with “Mambo Dolito.” There are polkas, of course, and the record also includes a twist, a pop song (“Where I Belong”) and a slow rock number. True to form, however, Brave Combo defies gravity with fierce music and a sensation of abandon that hasn’t gone stale in the band’s 33 years. Finch put it like this: “Sounds of the Hollow is an album of passion and variety, demonstrating our passion for variety. The song list includes polkas, cumbias, rumbas, a waltz, a twist, a tango, and even more disparate styles.” Finch deems the record “Brave Combo version 2012, still partying like it’s 1999, even as the Mayan calendar ticks out the clock.” Hollow’s influences hail from “Italy, Russia, Mexico, Poland, Nova Scotia, Germany, Cowtown and other American ports of call — and that’s just the short list,” Finch said. Another bit of trivia about Hollow: It marks the band’s second in-studio collaboration

that can affect a metallic bray and honking moose call even in skilled hands. Denton fiddler Bonnie Norris gets all spooky with her violin on the gem “Zombiefied.” It’s one of the best tracks on the album, and could be Finch’s treatise on the failings of 21stcentury American citizenship. Set to a benumbed bossa nova, the song airs the anxiety of a narrator who isn’t alive, but not dead, either. Nothing is scaldingly political on Hollow. But the band’s performance (and Finch’s arrangement) of “America, the Beautiful” is a love letter to the motherland, sung from a tongue that would rather celebrate liberty than honor it with a stiff musical homily. It might not take the liberties that Christina Aguilera did with the national anthem during the Super Bowl, but it’s got a certain something that might strike a red-blooded, meat-eating patriot as defiant. NOW PLAYING

The Avengers (###) Superheroes from Marvel Comics unite to face an otherworldly foe (Tom Hiddleston) in this assembling of franchise warriors: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Joss Whedon wrote and directed, delivering a satisfying, if exhausting, rendition of good versus evil. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. — B.A. Bernie (##1/2) Jack Black is the picture of silliness in this whimsical, fact-based film set in Carthage. He plays a good-natured, well-loved funeral home employee who befriends a local widow (Shirley MacLaine) known for her meanness and stinginess. But with Bernie, she blossoms, taking him on trips and spending money freely. That is, until she turns up dead. Matthew McConaughey plays the eventual prosecutor. Directed by Richard Linklater. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — B.A. Chimpanzee This nature documentary follows a baby chimpanzee and his family as they survive in the African forest. Directed by Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield. Rated G, 78 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

Millennium Entertainment

Jack Black stars as the title character, a well-liked employee at a funeral home in Carthage, in Bernie. Dark Shadows (#)Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are snuggled warmly in their comfort zone in this chilly horror-comedy, their eighth collaboration as director and star, respectively, and their weakest by far. Barnabas

Collins (Depp), a vampire who’s been buried alive for nearly two centuries suddenly finds himself back in his insular Maine hometown in 1972. By the time Burton finally puts his visual effects skills to their best use, in a

climactic showdown between Barnabas and the witch who cursed him (Eva Green), it’s too late. With Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley. Rated PG, 116 minutes. — AP The Five-Year Engagement (##1/2) The problem that plagues so many Judd Apatow productions — the one that keeps good comedies from being great ones — unfortunately exists here. The Five-Year Engagement is so scattered and overlong, it really feels like it lasts five years, despite the inherent likability of stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. Rated R, 124 minutes. — AP Girl in Progress (#1/2) The strong, sexy presence of Eva Mendes and the girlish perkiness of Cierra Ramirez can only go so far to make this forced mother-daughter dramedy tolerable. It’s a coming-of-age story that knows it’s a coming-of-age story. Breaking down and sending up a specific genre is fine if the script is strong enough to get away with such cutesy self-reference, as in Juno and Easy A. Director Patricia Riggen and screenwriter Hiram Martinez don’t go far enough, don’t dig deep enough with these characters. They play it too safe, which makes Girl in Progress feel like a slightly racier version of an ABC Family show. Rated PG-13, 84 minutes. — AP The Hunger Games (###) Entertaining and suspenseful yet sometimes overwrought rendition of Suzanne Collins’ popular futuristic novel about a young woman, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), and a young man, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), chosen to represent their district in the annual Hunger Games, a survival competition to the death among 24 young people. While focusing on

Katniss, director Gary Ross keeps the blood and gore to a minimum in the hunt sequences yet prolongs the initial phase in the Emerald City-like capital. Should please the novel’s fans. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. — B.A. The Lucky One (##) A U.S. Marine in Iraq (Zac Efron) finds a photo of a young woman (Taylor Schilling) in the rubble after a combat mission, and it becomes his lucky charm. Once home in the U.S., he tracks her down and falls in love with her, despite menace from both her nasty ex-husband and a feeble script by Will Fetters. The movie will probably please fans of Nicholas Sparks’ novel: Like his books, the movie is romantic, sensually pleasant and entirely predictable. — The Dallas Morning News Mirror Mirror An exiled princess (Lily Collins) enlists the help of a group of diminutive bandits to take back her usurped throne from an evil queen (Julia Roberts) in this retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. With Armie Hammer and Sean Bean. Rated PG, 106 minutes. — LAT The Pirates! Band of Misfits The enthusiastic captain of a pirate ship seeks to best his rivals and win the coveted Pirate of the Year award in this animated tale. With the voices of Hugh Grant, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton and Martin Freeman. In 3-D. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — LAT Think Like a Man Four men have their love lives shaken up when the women they are pursuing read a relationship-advice book and take its lessons to heart. With Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good and Regina Hall. Written by Keith Merryman and David A. Newman. Directed by Tim Story. Rated PG-13, 119 minutes. — LAT
