When Mike Steinel puts down his trumpet and picks up a guitar, he steps into his alter ego of Tex Zimmerman, a Southwestern version of Bob Dylan. Dylanfest 2014 is on Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf.

ex Zimmerman is back for his sixth Memorial Day gig at Dan’s Silver-

leaf. Dylanfest 2014, the brainchild of University of North Texas music professor Mike Steinel, continues the mission on Monday. As Tex Zimmerman, Steinel not only swaps his usual trumpet for a guitar; he also assumes the persona of a Southwestern incarnation of Bob Dylan to benefit Instruments of Change. Dylanfest starts at 5 p.m. Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Dylanfest features Tex and His All-Star Revue. The revue isn’t too shabby: vocalists Rosana and Gary Eckert, Bruce Wermuth and Jennifer Barnes. Paul Metzger plays

guitar, and Jeffry Eckels on bass and Steve Barnes on drums make up the rhythm section. Special guests include Beverly Hoch, a voice professor at Texas Woman’s University, musician Paul Slavens and Denton Mayor Chris Watts. “Our repertoire is drawn from Bob Dylan’s musical career that has spanned five decades,” Steinel said. “We play songs from all the various phases of his career, including acoustic folk, folk-rock, hard rock, rockabilly, gospel, country swing and everything in between. “We will be playing all the old favorites, but we have some surprises in store,” Steinel said. “We are very excited that our new mayor, Chris Watts, has graciously donated his services as a featured vocalist. It should be great fun, like all the events we’ve had in the past.” Instruments of Change was founded in 2007 and brings musical instruments and in-

struction to at-risk children throughout the world. In 2008 and 2009, the nonprofit traveled to South Africa and began a music academy. In 2011 a team traveled to Haiti and began a similar program. By collecting donated instruments and raising funds through activities such as Dylanfest, the nonprofit continues to support programs that bring music and music education to some of the most poverty-stricken areas of the planet. This year, an Instruments of Change team of 12 will travel to Israel to present two music camps: one at Ibin Absorption Center, which houses 600 Ethopian families, and another at Moshav Yitav, a community populated by Ukranian and Russian Jews who have emigrated to Israel for greater religious freedom. The entry fee is a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $7 for students. — Lucinda Breeding

The House Harkonnen is an Arlington four-piece that makes records through Denton label Do for It Records.

Sounds of annihilation By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

House Harkonnen lead singer Alex Johnson said the Arlington four-piece had talked about making a concept record for years. Vol. 7 is that record, and it’s an example of the careful planning and inspired art of a band that considers itself a hard rock outfit but sounds really, really metal. “It’s about a nuclear holocaust in Fort Worth,” Johnson said. Does the House Harkonnen have a beef with Cowtown? Why nuke the urban center that still tips a hat to its rural roots? “No,” said Johnson, laughing. “We claim Arlington because that’s where we started, but we all live in Fort Worth now. That’s where we live. That’s where we hang out. When we started talking about making a concept album, one of the things we tossed around was ‘What would happen if Fort Worth got hit by a nuclear bomb?’ It’s a satire, for sure.” The House Harkonnen has been on a short tour in support of Vol. 7. Denton’s Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios is the final stop Sunday night. Vol. 7 is the second record House Harkonnen has made on

the Denton-based DIY label Do for It Records, a startup that now has European backing but operates locally. Do for It is responsible for some of North Texas’ best metal and hard rock. Shaolin Death Squad is on the label, along with Denton’s Trebuchet. “We have complete artistic control,” Johnson said. “Do for It distributes it. It’s a good situation we have with them.” Johnson said the band plotted out Vol. 7 carefully. Between some tracks, you hear the sound of someone tuning a radio to find chatter and bits and pieces of country songs. “Everything you hear on the record we did,” Johnson said. “The sound of the radio — you know how if there was a nuclear detonation like 100 miles away, how it would create static if you were listening to the radio? We wanted to show when the bombs were dropping. And the music, too. You can hear some old Texas swing music. We recorded that. The idea is that this is back during the Cold War,

Cowtown gets fried in band’s concept album

during the 1950s. The music you heard in Texas during that time was Texas swing.” The record begins with “Beastmode,” a song about a band doing its thing and putting out music. “It’s funny because its a death metal song,” Johnson said. “We’re a hard rock band, but ‘Beastmode’ is super brutal. It’s about a band that’s just doing its thing. They’re just happy for people to listen, and then there’s a nuclear bomb dropped.” “I Sell Death” brings on the grinning corporate warmongers onto the fallout scene with kerpow-pow drums and a plucky melody line reminiscent of a jingle that undermines the confessional. “I sell. I sell death,” Johnson sings. “I am a builder. I built your fate/I am the architect that made your life this way/I know no consequences, I know no shame/I take the goods, you take the test/I sell. I sell death/ You wanted war, you got the best.” “Nine Lives” carries on that theme, addressing the military that staffs itself with teenagers who need to fill empty pockets. “You can be my head case,” Johnson sings to a face-melting guitar shriek. “You can be made accountable/If you’ve got no money, I can be your cat eyes/I can spend your nine lives over and

over again.” “Fort Worth Body Count” struts into the ruined streets with guitars grinding in the manner of Alice in Chains, and Johnson’s tongue is sweetened with a Scott Weiland growl. “Bombs Away” slows the record down considerably. “It’s written from the perspective of the pilot as the bombs are dropping,” Johnson said. “He’s guilt-ridden and it’s slower and depressing.” The House Harkonnen unites four versatile musicians with busy calendars. Dave Shafer plays bass, and the band’s drummer is Andy Grayson. Johnson plays the Hawaiian steel guitar for Wayne “The Train” Hancock and has made an electronic record. Guitarist Mike Doty has a garage rock project, Duell. “We all grew up together. We’re all in our late 20s and 30s, and we were all metalheads,” Johnson said. “That’s what we listened to — death metal and hardcore punk and stuff like that.” Vol. 7 was released in October. “Now that we’ve done a concept album, I don’t think we’ll do another one for a long time,” Johnson said. The band plans to release its third album later this year.

Sowing, with Oates

Daphne Willis reaps rewards of pinpoint vocals, musicality By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

t played out like an emerging musician’s dream. Daphne Willis was playing a showcase called “Music City Roots.” She made her set count, then retired from the stage. Then a friend of Willis’ who was working her merchandise table tracked her down with a message. “They told me, ‘By the way, John Oates just stopped by the merch table and bought all your stuff,’” Willis remembered. That would be John Oates, best known as the mustachioed half of the R&B-soul supergroup Hall & Oates (who recently regrouped to make a hilarious ad for Google — see “man gobbler”). “When she said that, I was really in disbelief,” Willis said. “I asked her if she was sure and she was like, ‘I think it was John Oates, but he didn’t have a mustache.’” Willis needed to verify the close encounter of the musichistory kind. And it was indeed John Oates, who has been known to leave home without the mustache, and he was interested. “He wrote his number on a napkin and said, ‘Call me. Let’s write together.’ I called him the next day,” Willis said. Well, Willis wasn’t exactly a struggling artist at the time. She was signed to Vanguard Records

in 2010. She released her debut, What I Say, that year and followed it up with Because I Can in 2011. Willis was born in San Antonio to a pair of University of Texas graduates, her mother with a vocal performance degree and her father with a degree in music engineering. She spent some of her childhood in Agoura Hills outside of Los Angeles. But Willis grew up in Chicago, studying the songs of Natalie Maines and Ella Fitzgerald. Willis cops to an obsessive bent when it comes to music, even from the age of 10. “I’d listen to those records over and over, and I’d sing the songs and just try to get every single inflection exactly,” she recalled. She started writing poetry as a tween, and sang in the school choir when she wasn’t singing around the house. She got into songwriting in high school. “I got to the point where I was wondering, ‘How cool would it be to turn these poems and short stories into songs,’” Willis said. She kept at it, working the open-mic circuit diligently while at DePaul University in Chicago. There, she was signed to Vanguard. She hustled like a player and followed up on sound engineer and producer Gary Paczosa (who’s worked with Alison Krauss and Sarah Jarosz) when he said she should check out Nashville, Tenn. “He came up to Chicago, and

he kind of suggested I do some co-writing,” Willis said. “It really started kind of with the trips getting longer. Instead of a week, it was two weeks. Then I’d be there for a month. It’s just such a great town for music, and for tours it’s right in the middle of the country.” Willis moved to Nashville, a city she said still bends a knee to country music but offers enthusiastic support for singer-songwriting types and indie artists. Plus, she said, a hip-hop scene is starting to gather some steam. Co-writing was fruitful for Willis, resulting in Live to Try, her third record and a collaboration with Oates. The record parses Willis’ adventurous taste with some “throwbacks” with more modern, synth-based music. “Your Girl” and “People That Matter” are groovy nods to the blues-tinged rock of Motown. “Backyard,” a ditty about some-

Singer-songwriter Daphne Willis plays Friday night at Dan’s Silverleaf. She’s opening for a reunion gig by Ten Hands, the legendary Denton act from the ’80s and ’90s.

one who suspects their significant other is plotting to murder them, is a vintage Philly-style pop piece with an unexpected flute solo. Willis gets synth-y with “Live to Try,” “Golden Boy” and “Inside Outright.” Oates, who co-wrote the whole album, shows his influence on “Mr. Money.” Listen close and you can hear the chronically underrated baritones that leavened Daryl Hall’s blued-eyed soul tenor. Oates plays on the record, too. His influence bubbles up in the infectious, ’80s-inspired “You Make Me Wanna.” (The “ooh-oohs” are a blast from the past, specifically from Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True.”) Willis said her voice intuitively changes to mesh with the styles. “On the throwbacks, I tend to embellish more, hold notes, soften up the tone,” she said. She said she’s come a ways from What I Say and Because I Can. “I kind of wanted to kind of explore a few different genres on this record,” she said. “I wanted

to create some continuity and also have some variety, experiment with some synth and woodwinds and old school [sounds] like that. Some songs lean toward the more mod, synth-y pop sort of stuff. “I also felt I had developed a stronger personality and a stronger message. I honed in on this message of self-empowerment, positive energy — the music that I work out to and listen to when I’m cleaning. I wanted to make that kind of record.” Everything gets a different treatment when she plays live. She’ll play Denton with drummer Cam Brousseau and keyboard and bassist Andrew Toombs. “It’s really fun to take it out of the content of the record and get into the content of the live shows,” Willis said. “The records are more bare-bones. ‘Live to Try’ is one I have a really good time on live. Doing the Oates stuff without Oates is always a little rough. I’m so excited to be taking these songs out on the road. The slower songs, I’m trying to give more dynamics.”

OPENING FRIDAY Blended ( 1⁄2) These days, Adam Sandler is a bottle of beer that’s lost all its bubbles. Drew Barrymore, in her third pairing with Sandler, still brings energy and conviction to her performance as Lauren, a mother of two thrown together on an African vacation with this lump she met on the Blind Date from Hell. Wendi McClendon-Covey, playing her best friend Jen, delivers a comically furious turn. Terry Crews steals the movie as an MC and singer at the Sun City resort where Jim (Sandler), the sad sporting goods salesman, and Lauren, the professional closet organizer, and their five kids end up in an absurdly contrived joint vacation. In the middle of it all is Sandler, aimlessly going through the motions. Exploits through time The gang’s all here in XMen: Days of Future Past, a fanciful retelling of mutant mythology. Beginnings and endings twist themselves into entertaining pretzels as both the young and old gather for director Bryan Singer’s latest chapter in the history of our superheroes. The theme of this X-Men can be found more in its Proustian subtitle than in the usual “outsider” vibe that runs throughout the franchise. But this new perspective does not translate onto screen as some

subdued meditation. Singer, from Simon Kinberg’s screenplay, takes the opportunity to use time travel, giving the XMen a new gimmick with which to unleash their powers. The developing scenes align themselves after an opening attack by the robotic Sentinels when Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) arrives to inform the squad that the only way to stop the machines is to go back in time and thwart the creations of evil scientist Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). After she asks, “Is the future truly set?” Logan (Hugh Jackman) magically transports back to 1973 when the Sentinel program still remains unrealized. Once back to the time of bad hair and wide lapels, Logan encounters a young, skeptical but mobile Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). The time traveler

eventually persuades the professor of his mission: assembling the necessary team to stop Trask, who, for his part, has acquired DNA from Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) to work into his creation. From there, others appear, such as Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who’s inconveniently incarcerated 10 stories below the Pentagon because he assassinated John F. Kennedy (don’t worry, it’s a frame-up). Director Singer seems to enjoy these human interactions, even portray-

is that for long stretches, all it shows is destruction. We get the obligatory context, followed by monster fights — just stuff getting smashed and knocked down. Brian Cranston plays a scientist in Japan, working in a nuclear plant, who notices something very wrong on his computer. A stony-

faced Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Cranston’s son, a lieutenant, and Elizabeth Olsen is his wife. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to write either of them a personality. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — San Francisco Chronicle Million Dollar Arm ( 1⁄2)

There’s something about a baseball movie that just invites corniness. And so it is with Disney’s Million Dollar Arm, yet somehow, this flaw doesn’t feel like the biggest crime — especially when you have a high-quality cast at work. Real-life sports agent JB Bernstein (Mad Men’s Jon Hamm)

ing President Richard Nixon (Mark Camacho) as a gun-toting mad man. The special effects remain somewhat blunted while the mutants and their adversaries face off, as Singer saves most of his flashy pyrotechnics until the final blowout. And despite the jumping around of time and place, Singer coherently pieces his film together, never obfuscating the plot or quick-cutting to such an extreme that the action sequences are obscured. This X-Men may relegate some characters to lesser roles (Storm, Rogue, Iceman), but it is done to achieve an overall effect of greater clarity, and, in the process, a better movie. COVER STORY

Warm heart for a cold one Free-flowing libations, fans and firefighters have kept Beerman honest for 25 years By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

hen Brian Houser came to Denton in 1989, he was going through a divorce. Then he started playing guitar and singing in college bars around town and became the “Beerman.” That was 25 years ago. Today, the Beerman is still playing in college bars in Denton. And in bars that draw professionals, blue-collar working folks, soccer moms and university professors. He’s also playing in Lewisville, Grapevine and elsewhere. By trade, Houser is a carpenter who scales wooden roller coasters at Six Flags Over Texas amusement park in Arlington. But he’s left his mark as a Texas roots musician, plying audiences with songs about Everyman and his Beautiful Bride (or jaded former girlfriend) and the living of a simple life complicated by the human condition. The Beerman and, well, a whole bar full of his closest friends are set to pack Dan’s Silverleaf on May 31 for a 25th reunion. Proceeds will benefit a cause close to the Beerman’s heart: the Denton Firefighters Memorial Fund. “Back in the early ’90s, the town started calling me Beerman,” Houser said in an interview recently as he drove from Denton to Arlington. “I was playing mostly college bars. Over the years, they’ve grown and had families. Every year, I see the same folks, and some are from out of town.” The Beerman, who has released four albums — one of which was produced by Lloyd Maines — recalled one particular fan (he calls them “Beerheads”) he almost didn’t win over. “In 1994, I was playing over at the Sunset Grille,” Houser said. “I think it had a different name back then, but I was play-

“Back in the early ’90s, the town started calling me Beerman,” says Denton singer-songwriter Brian Houser. His fans have grown up, started families, and some of them have moved. But, he says, “every year, I see the same folks.” Beerman’s 25th reunion show happens on May 31.

Brian Houser Beerman plays at 6:30 p.m. today at Twilight Tunes on the lawn of the Courthouse on the Square, 110 W. Hickory St. He’ll share the stage with Joe Pat Hennen and Jeff Glover for a singer-songwriter showcase. See story, Page 6.

ing upstairs, and we were having a really wild time. Well, this couple came up the stairs and they got intimidated by us. They turned around and started to

leave, and I stopped playing and said, ‘Now wait a minute! We’re friendly here. I’ll buy you a pitcher of beer.’” The man in the couple be-

came such a fan that Houser said he just played at his wedding reception — the fan’s third time to take a crack at holy matrimony. But the story is an example of the Beerman experience. Newcomers get a beer on the Beerman’s tab. Fans can — and often do — buy the musician a beer,

usually stowed in an icy tub near his chair. “All those college kids I started playing for have grown, got married and had families. One of those kids, I just played at his daughter’s 16th birthday party,” he said. See HOUSER on 11

Houser In 2004, Michael J. Valentine, a Denton firefighter, died in a car accident. Houser staged a benefit performance for the fallen firefighter. Valentine’s widow eventually remarried, and Houser said she and his three children were doing well, “so we started raising money for the firefighters’ memorial fund.” The Beerman staged a pub crawl benefit from 2007 to 2011, and retired it in 2011 after the crowd swelled beyond easy management. “There were so many people that it took too long for people to get in the door at the bars in time to see the music,” he said. Little did the Beerman know that he would end up needing the Denton Fire Department. “We had a fire in 2011, and it was ironic because the Denton firefighters had just given us an award two months before,” Houser said. “We live over in Idiot’s Hill, and our house was built in 1957. We had a faulty chimney, but we didn’t know it. It caught on fire and we didn’t know it. We were just sitting there. I had a fire going all day. Later that night, we saw the backyard all lit up, and our roof was just totally on fire.” Houser said he saw a familiar face — a fan on the firehouse staff — when he opened the door.

“He said, ‘Beerman, what are you doing here?’ and I told him, ‘I live here!’ He turned around and said, ‘Guys, we got to do this one right,’” Houser recalled. “You know what? Except for the couch we didn’t lose one personal item.” Houser claims he sets the “beer record” in all of the venues he plays. “I’ve had club owners tell me, ‘I had a five-piece jazz band in here last night, but you sold four times as much beer,’” he said. “And I just tell them, ‘That’s what my fans like.’” There’s more to the Beerman than the brewskies, though. Houser lacks pretense in music and in person. You could call him the godfather of Denton’s Americana authenticity, the guy who was making the music that young regional indie folk musicians hail as “honest.” The difference between the Beerman and the indie folk musicians is that he does it without pronouncement. His second album, Son of a Common Man, was produced by Maines, who also played pedal steel on the record. After Common Man was released, Houser quietly went on to perform at South by Southwest Music Festival and play with some of the luminaries of Southwest-

ern Americana and country music: Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen and Houser’s hero, Willie Nelson. Houser said he didn’t focus too intently beyond his next gigs and the albums he made. “I literally never imagined it would last this long,” he said. “There’s a guy at Six Flags who only knows me as Beerman, literally. He came in one day and said, ‘You ought to go out to this place in Fort Worth. This guy plays, calls himself the Beerman. He’s great.’ I just told him, ‘If a guy who plays calls himself the Beerman, there’s no way I’m gonna go see him.’ He never caught on, and, well, I just let it go. Didn’t say another word.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.

Rated PG, 124 minutes. — AP Moms’ Night Out A group of mothers who want to enjoy a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation enlist their husbands to watch the kids for a few hours, but things don’t go quite according to plan. With Sarah Drew, Sean Astin and Patricia Heaton. Rated PG, 98 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Neighbors ( 1⁄2) Young parents Mac (the reliably funny Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are doing pretty well in their new suburban digs. Until Delta Psi moves in. Right next door. At first, Mac and Kelly try to make nice with the frat’s leader, Teddy (Zac Efron), and end up partying all night, just to show how cool they are. But soon, the noise is too much, and the war is on. Neighbors is noisy, crude, profane, gross and sometimes mean. Luckily, it’s also extremely funny. Rated R, 96 minutes. — AP
