ust off the boots and that straw cowboy hat. Straw hat optional, boots encouraged. Rob Donnelly takes care of Twilight Tunes tonight with original tunes that are a little bit country and a lot rock ’n’ roll.

Tonight, the Rob Donnelly Band will stomp the clay gumbo with Texas country. Donnelly’s music is the kind of sound that goes good with a bottle of Shiner and a homemade burrito — there’s some Lynyrd Skynyrd rock flourishes in the mix, a dose of Pat Green and Donnelly’s own soulful notes. Twilight Tunes is a tradition in Denton — a free date with music on the downtown Square from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Thursday in May and June. A bounce house is set up for children, and locals are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs downtown and nosh on dinners bought at

restaurants around the Square. The concerts are on the west lawn of the Square, 110 W. Hickory St., in May, and then move to the east side in June.

White is a patron saint of clarity to journalists of America, an honor he won when he co-authored The Elements of Style with William Strunk Jr. The book still stands as the authority on how to write with drama and without pomp. But before White won the affections of journalists, he won the hearts of young readers with Charlotte’s Web. It was a battle hard won, too, because White insisted on truth telling. Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School dramatizes White’s story on the stage this weekend. The story makes a noble appeal to young and old. Wilbur the pig squirms his way into the world with just

He befriends a spider, Charlotte, who teaches him about life — and loss — on a simple rural farm. unk veterans Toys That Kill released the fourth album of their 12-year run just last week. The band hit the road in mid-April, but fans will have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the new tunes before they arrive at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Wednesday night. Guitarist Todd Congelliere, who’s also the founder of Recess Records, said that the band simply enjoys playing live. “We always have a lot of energy, but if the crowd shows us energy in return, we just feed off it. It’s always a lot of fun,” he said. Congelliere got his start in punk rock in the late ’80s after fellow skaters introduced him to bands like Black Flag, the Descendents and Dead Kennedys. Had that not happened, Congelliere said, he wouldn’t be

involved in music today. Congelliere previously fronted F.Y.P. The melodic, fast-paced yet loosely hardcore sound began out of nothing but a low-budget drum machine and a fourtrack recorder. It was clear, though, that the band had something else in mind, so Congelliere and guitarist Sean Cole joined forces with bassist Chachi Ferrara and drummer Denis Fleps to eventually form today’s Toys That Kill. With the release of the new album, Fambly 42, the band is said to have its sound down to a science. “It’s hard to judge really what this album sounds like because it’s been almost three or four years in between this one and the last,” Congelliere said. “We recorded this

Aging ‘Men in Black’ forgets some of original quick-as-a-flash humor

Josh Brolin impersonating the young Tommy Lee Jones is worth the price of admission to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling, deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan in this sentimental sequel to the sci-fi comedies about secret agents in black suits who save the world from aliens. We have to meet the young Agent K because an alien serial killer who isn’t fond of his nickname, “Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement), has traveled back in time to save the arm that Agent K shot off in 1969, and avoid the 40-year prison sentence that followed. And that bit of time travel means that Agent J (Will Smith) must go back and save his future partner, played by Jones through the three films as a laconic loner who has saved the world a few times and doesn’t brag about it. Ten years have passed since the last film, and everybody involved is much older now. The head of the agency (Rip Torn) is buried in an early scene. Emma Thompson, in the silliest scene of her bigscreen career, takes over. But before she can explain to Agent J what Agent K means when he says “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answer to, Boris escapes from the super-secret lunar prison and the Agent K of the past and Earth of the present are in peril. That leaves an awful lot of this movie in the usually capable hands of Will Smith. But if director Barry Sonnenfeld has lost his fastball, Smith has lost a step or two running the bases. It’s a movie of scattered chuckles before he manages to deliver his first big laugh, 45 minBrooklyn feminist (Anna Faris) and then tries to win his country back as well as his new girlfriend. Over-thetop silliness filled with insults and fishout-of-water humor provide plenty of laughs, however squirm-inducing. Rated R, 83 minutes. — B.A. The Hunger Games (###) Entertaining and suspenseful yet sometimes overwrought rendition of Suzanne Collins’ popular futuristic novel about a young woman, Katniss

utes in. Sonnenfeld’s fullscreen close-ups (his theory of comedy is that it is in your face, literally) catch Smith pasting what he has decided is a funny expression on his face, and freezing it through an entire scene. Still, this is comedy packed with possibilities, many of which pay off. The black Man in Black time-travels to 1969, “not the best time for your people, J is warned. Race isn’t his big problem. Racing to save victims of Boris before they get murdered (Jennifer Lawrence), and a young man, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), chosen to represent their district in the annual Hunger Games, a survival competition to the death among 24 young people. Director Gary Ross keeps the blood and gore to a minimum in the hunt sequences yet prolongs the initial phase in the Emerald City-like capital. Should please the novel’s fans. is. Brolin, as the young Western swing fan Agent K, does that “surly Elvis thing that Jones mastered for the older K. A scattering of hippies, an impending moon shoot and antique future tech (the Men in Black were ahead of their time, even then) are played for laughs. But there’s no urgency to this, no insistence to the humor. Sonnenfeld’s whiplash-quick Addams Family and Men in Black movies were sprints compared to this ambling follow-up. We find out the secret behind supermodels (they’re all aliens) and Andy Warhol (Bill Hader of Saturday Night Live). And we meet an alien who sees every version of the future, whose eyes moisten over the coming of the “Miracle Mets of ’69. Michael Stuhlbarg plays this fellow with a Clarence the

But sometimes it’s enough to want a movie to work, to want a genuinely funny filmmaker to regain a little of his lost form, for Josh Brolin to come along and firmly take the mantle of man’s man-funnyman from the actor who made humorless so damned hilarious, way back when. ost of the time, Etsy Denton merchants are available chiefly online, operating shops with the handmade cyber-retail giant, Etsy.com. Twice a year, though, the predominantly female network of local tailors, jewelers, artisans and designers gets together in a single space so buyers can see the merchandise up close — touch it, even. Saturday marks the Etsy Denton Summer Bazaar. “What we really want to do is unite artists with buyers — especially buyers who live in Denton,” said Rachel Aughtry, a pursemaker who serves as

a de facto co-leader of the local network of Etsy shopkeepers. “Most of the time, if you go online and come into one of our shops, you see our

handmade work. You don’t meet us. This is a chance for us to meet buyers and get to know them better.” Some Etsy Denton members started selling their wares on-site (in addition to online) at the weekly Denton Community Market. Shelley Christner, a Denton artist who “upcycles” found and discarded objects into a host of functional items — large coffee bean sacks into durable and fashionable ottomans, and discarded fabric into cloth napkins — said the community market was ideal. “We didn’t do the market as Etsy Denton, but members did participate. It was good because it really brought out the people who were looking for the kinds of things we all make,”

Local crafters from virtual marketplace set up shop in town for a day

Christner said. “At the same time, being out there every week was a huge commitment. You have to get everything ready, take it out to the market and then pack up. It really is a major undertaking.” More member artists could commit to the fall and summer sales, Christner said. The artists can steadily gather merchandise for the sale and the bazaar — and they could also use the information they collect as Etsy shopkeepers to prepare popular items for an on-site sale. As of late last week, nearly 50 Etsy sellers had been accepted to join the bazaar. A core group of Etsy Denton members act as a jury so they can keep the event local — the vast major-

ity of vendors live and work in Denton — and ensure that shoppers will have a selection of merchandise that boasts solid craftsmanship and creativity. Some vendors will be coming from Dallas and Fort Worth, Aughtry said. Etsy Denton jeweler Rachel Nokes said the bazaar can help shopkeepers smarten up. “The first thing I noticed when I started doing this is that, online, you only have an idea of your market,” Nokes said. “You didn’t really know that market until those folks actually walk up to your booth and start looking at your stuff.” See ETSY on 9

Aughtry agreed that the sales introduce artists to the demographic they attract online. “While I have a target market — women of a certain age group — you really do see it before your eyes,” she said. “I sell a different bag to Dallas women. Women in Dallas buy my big bags. In Denton, our college girls who don’t have a lot of money buy my little purses.” Darien Orr, a photographer and artist, said meeting buyers — instead of getting their orders online through Etsy — can revive a flagging imagination. “Sometimes you get kind of bored with the things you make,” she said. “For me, this is a way of getting re-energized.” Orr makes clothing, props and accessories for vintage Barbie dolls, and then photographs them on the go — often around Denton. She turns the photos into greeting cards, and they also grace her business cards. “When I set up shoots, I make most everything. I make the clothes, and I’ve made cotton candy to use in a shoot,” Orr said. “I try to do my shoots at off hours, because people think I’m crazy, out around Denton lying on my stomach, taking pictures of dolls.” She’ll also be selling a coloring book inspired by her photographs, Out and About in Denton Original Coloring Book. Denton artist Nikki Lambert, who upcycles men’s clothing into baby and children’s clothes, said frustration drove her to her sewing machine. “I fell in love with all these men’s shirts,” Lambert said. “And I got really bored with children’s clothes. Especially clothes for little boys, because it seems like the only clothes for boys have sports or monster trucks on them. I started this back when my kids were young — about five or six years ago — and it was a time when I felt like my body and a lot of parts of my life were out of my control. I feel like this was the one thing I could do.” Lambert makes mostly shirts in sizes newborn to 6 months, up to 3T. Nokes said savvy artists can make good money by running a

First, Nokes said, Etsy artists “Rachel has given workshops for Etsy Denton about how to earn and keep customers by

making quality handmade items. “Photos are so important when you’re selling on Etsy,” Nokes said. “I bought a fancy camera, and fortunately I have a good photographer friend who gave me good tips and advice.” The artists said buyers are attracted to shops with a big selection, good pictures of items and excellent customer feedback — or good, old-fashioned customer service. That includes using sound shipping policies and replacing items broken in transit. Aughtry praised Etsy for its user-friendliness — shoppers can browse by category, price, color and occasion. The online retailer also makes it easy for shoppers to do business with sellers who live and work in their town. The artists said Denton is a good place to be in the business of making things by hand. “Denton is a college town, and people here already sup-

port handmade art. They love their town,” Christner said. “Not every town is like this, so we’re lucky in that respect.” Aughtry said the summer bazaar might be more fun for sellers than buyers, given the popularity of Etsy in general and a national sentiment that promotes American and locally made commodities. “Etsy is exploding right now,” Aughtry said. “And it’s a really good way for creative people to get into business during an economy where a lot of people are losing jobs. You have no overhead. I don’t have to convince someone to give me a bunch of money to start my business.” Etsy sold $62.8 million worth of handmade merchandise in March. The site takes a small percentage of each sale, and works to keep the site functional and easy to use. The summer bazaar on Saturday will be staffed with volunteers to help shoppers navigate the event, and to help vendors. Aughtry said the event is suited for big spenders and thrifty shoppers alike.
