TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
And yet the band’s namesake hopes it isn’t history that audiences think of when the local ensemble plays on Sunday night at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern. On Sunday, Aponte said he hopes it’ll be the alchemy of rhythm and melody claiming the toes and imaginations of diners and jazz enthusiasts who gather at Sweetwater for the popular jazz series. “I don’t care how old they are, if the audience isn’t moving their head in time to the music, you’re not doing your job as a musician,” said Aponte, a lecturer in the jazz studies program at the University of North Texas College of Music. Aponte began studying drums in Puerto Rico, where he was born and raised. When he began studying under his first percussion teacher, Aponte said he was a young disciple of Neil Peart, the legendary drummer for the rock band Rush. “I just wanted to learn rock,” Aponte said. “My teacher said, ‘I can teach you that. But first, I’m going to teach you how we play.’ He was an intelligent man.” Aponte attended UNT on a scholarship for one reason. “I came here to learn jazz,” he said. “Now I’m playing Latin jazz, and it’s like I’m putting all the pieces together.” Caribe Club is made up of UNT graduates who, together, are experimenting with a pan-Latin instrumental jazz. Often billed as a Brazilian jazz ensemble, Aponte & Caribe Club actually pledge allegiance to pushing the boundaries of Latin American jazz while honoring the essential rhythms Aponte describes as “the vertebrae” of jazz. Drummer Jose Aponte addresses the crowd at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, where Caribe Club, a local Latin jazz quintet, played. Pictured, from left: Herbert Garcia, Jorge Ginorio, Aponte, Carlos “Fifo” Rengifo and Chris Villanueva. shove, Aponte dodges the Brazilian jazz label. It fits, he said, and it doesn’t. “The band is mostly Latin American,” Aponte said. “Caribe Club means the Caribbean Club, and all of the regions around the Caribbean are in our music. The Latin American sound is so vast. You’re talking about three peoples in the Caribbean — the African, the Indian and the Spanish. When you grow up with this music, you know when you hear something that ‘hey, now that’s Venezuela,’ or you hear something and you know it’s Puerto Rican or Colombian. And when you hear it, you might be hearing just a quick rhythm.” Saxophone player Tito Charneco is Puerto Rican, like Aponte. Pianists Chris Villanueva and Christian Valdes are Puerto Rican and Mexican-American, respectively. Percussionist Herbert Garcia is Cuban, and occasional percussionist Jorge Ginorio is Italian. (String bassist Ross Schodek, who occasionally joins the band, doesn’t claim a Latin American heritage, but plays as though he were from the isles.) Aponte said the band performs original music and the
occasional jazz standard, but those standards are “Latinized.” Sweetwater Grill is usually the place to be after work in downtown Denton. Aponte said some of the audience comes for drink specials and the Southwestern-meetsAmerican menu. But more and more people are coming to hear the jazz on Tuesday and Sunday nights. “Sweetwater is doing it right,” Aponte said. “To put it simply, they appreciate the musicians. They pay the musicians. They’re fans of jazz. And they’re booking and promoting really good acts. Even people in Dallas are finding out about the jazz nights at Sweetwater.” Newbies take note: Sweetwater is a corner watering hole — it’s not huge, and the indoor bar can leave you smelling like cigarette smoke. Come early to claim a space, and don’t be afraid to be the first to get up and dance. Details: Jose Aponte & Caribe Club play at 7 p.m. Sunday at Sweetwater, 115 S. Elm St. No cover. Jesse Woolery blasting away on the saxophone, Link Chalon strumming the guitar, Bubba Hernandez on whatever he feels like playing and Fritz Schwalm on guitar. Maynard is probably best known for dramatizing anonymous compositions of the Renaissance and putting her stamp on classical guitar music. But when her twin daughters were born, Maynard turned her keen ear to children’s music and found too many musical shortcuts for comfort. Ever since, the artist has been writing tunes that get kids dancing, with lyrics that make parents grin. Maynard plays the Square tonight, and urges everyone to show up in their pajamas.
Today is the last day of school for children in Denton schools, and Maynard wants the young ones to cut loose. Twilight Tunes is a tradition in Denton — a free date with music on the downtown Square from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Thursday in May and June. A bounce house is set up for children, and locals are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the Square and nosh on dinners bought at restaurants on and near the Square. The June concerts are on the east lawn of the Square, 110 W. Hickory St. Who’s up next week: classic rock and blues with the Dave Thomas Band.

pirit of Aggieland calling. No, it’s not the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. It’s the Texas Twisters, a College Station band that dabbles in classic rock, country, disco and soul. The band plays the downtown Square from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Expect covers, but also expect some of the energy that makes the Dixie Chicken famous — just like at the famed College Station watering hole, you can wear your best blue jeans, your oldest Stetson and your best pair of dancing boots. The free concerts on the Square are presented by the Denton Parks and Recreation Department every Wednesday in May and June. Concerts are suitable for all ages. Bring blankets, chairs and consider picking up lunch at a restaurant on the Square.

In Moonrise Kingdom, director Wes Anderson’s weakness for whimsy follows a natural progression. After an early career (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou) of creating artificial adults for his artificial worlds, Anderson now focuses on a targeted population that would seem a natural fit for his false flightiness: 12-year-olds. But what seems like would be a good fit isn’t. In Andersonworld, children talk like adults, and adults talk like two screenwriters churning out endless passages that they hope will sound clever and inspired but end up sounding quaint, forced and often ridiculous. For some reason, Anderson, with co-writer Roman Coppola, places Moonrise in 1965. On a small, isolated island, 12year-old Sam (Jared Gilman) runs away from his scout camp one night. His scoutmaster (Edward Norton) and the local sheriff (Bruce Willis) begin a search about the same time local girl Suzy (Kara Hayward) also goes missing, adding her parents (Frances McDormand and Bill Murray) to the hunt. Sam and Suzy have planned their escape together, an exercise that seems geared simply to allow the two children to deliver more Andersonianlywhimsical dialogue. As the hunt continues, any hoped-for effect from having children talking like adults wears thin. The search continues, the two kids act precocious, stuff happens. Is it over yet? Anderson infiltrates every frame as he fills his screens with activity, much of which seems to be little more than distractions. It shows an active hand, but one that adds little to the overall effect. It’s almost as if he wants to give his audi-

OPENING FRIDAY For Greater Glory Against the backdrop of the Cristero War in 1920s Mexico, a retired general is reluctantly drawn into conflict against a ruthless government. With Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Peter O’Toole and Oscar Isaac. Rated R, 143 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Snow White & the Huntsman (###1/2) Astonishingly beautiful and breathtaking in its brutal imagery, thrilling and frightening in equal measure, yet as bereft of satisfying substance as a poisoned apple. Director Rupert Sanders’ revisionist take on the classic Brothers Grimm fable upends expectations of traditional gender roles while simultaneously embracing what a fairy tale should be. It’s dark and dangerous, vicious and violent. And yet the performances — notably from Kristen Stewart as the title character — don’t always live up to the film’s visionary promise. With Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — The Associated Press

Jared Gilman stars as a precocious 12-year-old scout in Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson’s young characters talk like adults, and his adults talk like screenwriters trying to carve something quaint and meaningful out of every statement.
Moonrise Kingdom Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas.
ences so much that he does not know how to stop himself. In fairness, and possibly explaining Anderson’s dedicated fans, not all of the contrived
phoniness is without merit. He often has deft, well-composed single shots to complement his frequent use of dolly shots that call attention to the director while accomplishing little else. And no matter how inane the on-screen activity, Anderson usually adds some flavor and personality with his musical selections, with original contributions here from Mark Mothersbaugh and Alexandre Desplat as well as songs from Hank Williams and Benjamin Britten.
The Avengers (###) Superheroes from Marvel Comics unite to face an otherworldly foe (Tom Hiddleston) in this assembling of franchise warriors: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Joss Whedon wrote and directed, delivering a satisfying, if exhausting, rendition of good versus evil. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. — Boo Allen Battleship (###) This is big, dumb fun that knows it’s big, dumb fun and enthusiastically embraces its big, dumb, fun nature. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a lieutenant on one Naval destroyer while his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), is the commanding officer of another. Both answer to Adm. Shane (a withering, well-cast Liam Neeson). They’re all taking part in some international war games off the Hawaiian coast when a satellite signal provokes some angry extraterrestrials. Rated PG-13, 131 minutes. — AP Bernie (##1/2) Jack Black is the picture of silliness in this whimsical,
fact-based film set in Carthage. He plays a good-natured, well-loved funeral home employee who befriends a local widow (Shirley MacLaine) known for her cruelty and stinginess. But with Bernie, she blossoms, taking him on trips and spending money freely. That is, until she turns up dead. Matthew McConaughey plays the eventual prosecutor. Directed by Richard Linklater. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — B.A. Cherynobyl Diaries Six young tourists in search of adventure abroad hire an extreme tour guide, who takes them to a ghost town thought to have been deserted in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Rated R, 90 minutes. — LAT Dark Shadows (#) Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are snuggled warmly in their comfort zone in this chilly horror-comedy, their eighth collaboration as director and star, respectively, and their weakest by far. Barnabas Collins (Depp), a vampire who’s been buried alive for nearly two centuries suddenly finds himself back in his insular Maine hometown in 1972. By the time Burton finally puts his visual effects skills to their best use, in a climactic showdown between Barnabas and the witch who cursed him (Eva Green), it’s too late. With Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley. Rated PG, 116 minutes. — AP The Dictator (###) Sacha Baron Cohen stars as the title character, Adm. Gen. Aladeen, the ruler of the fictitious oil-rich African country Wadiya. He comes to America, loses his trademark beard, lands with a Brooklyn feminist (Anna Faris), and then tries to win his country back as well as his new girlfriend. Over-thetop silliness filled with insults and fish-out-of-water humor provide plenty of laughs, however squirminducing. Rated R, 83 minutes. — B.A. Men in Black 3 (###) Josh Brolin impersonating the young Tommy Lee Jones is worth the price of admission to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling, deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan in this sentimental sequel to the scifi comedies about secret agents in black suits who save the world from aliens. An alien serial killer (Jemaine Clement) has traveled back in time to save the arm that Agent K shot off in 1969, and Agent J (Will Smith) must go back and save his future partner. That leaves an awful lot of this movie in Smith’s usually capable hands. But if director Barry Sonnenfeld has lost his fastball, Smith has lost a step or two running the bases. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service What to Expect When You’re Expecting (##1/2) The dads — Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon and Rob Huebel — liven up what is a rather predictable and cliched depiction of pregnancy. A likable, good-looking cast of popular actors can only do so much with material that’s superficial and sitcommy. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks and Anna Kendrick. Rated PG13, 110 minutes. — AP
COVER STORY
Filling the scripts Playwriting festival fleshes out new works touching on mental health By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer

enton Community Theatre joins the city’s growing list of festivals today, and volunteers are just as upbeat as the college kids who assemble to run 35 Denton. The nationally recognized nonprofit theater unveils its first-ever playwriting festival, “Method & Madness,” a threeday event that cuts a wide swath through audiences. Local performers and directors will present staged readings of the top five plays submitted to the festival. Local therapists, writers and teachers will lead workshop panels for aspiring writers, nonprofit theater workers and volunteers, and anyone touched by mental
illness. Julie Brinker, the company’s community outreach director and a North Central Texas College theater professor, said the festival explores mental health because an anonymous donor offered the company money to develop a project around mental health. “An anonymous donor came to us and offered to put up the prize money for the winning plays if we committed to producing something about imagination and the human condition,” said Brinker, a member of the committee that organized and is running the festival. “Four thousand dollars will light a fire under a nonprofit, I’ll tell you.” See METHOD on 10

Method The donor came forward in the spring of 2011, and the company immediately formed a committee to plan and run the festival. The company accepted submissions from playwrights from 48 states. “We got two submissions from Alaska, which I thought was interesting, and then all the way from Southern California. We had a lot of submissions from the North Texas and D-FW area,” Brinker said. Playwrights — and their plays — were eligible for the prizes only if the writers weren’t already committed to publishing the play or to producing it as a fully staged show
through another theater company. The festival is dedicated to exploring, evaluating and presenting staged readings of new plays. “With theaters like ours, we’re in a situation where we have to cover our expenses as nonprofits, which means we end up having to do known properties,” Brinker said. Volunteers for three of the winning plays gathered at the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center on Tuesday night. Most of this weekend’s festival events will take place in the black box theater. Longtime theater volunteers Fred Cassell and Mark Jadrych were among those who met for the back-to-back rehearsals. Cassell and Jadrych were recruited by Dennis Welch to
appear in the staged reading of the grand prize winning play, Family Matters by J.M. Eisenman. Jadrych said he felt privileged to be part of the festival. “It’s a feather in your cap, really, to be one of the first people to perform a play,” he said. “You know you’re part of something when you’re working on a play that adjudicators — people who really know theater — decided was worthwhile.” Family Matters is about an aging television writer, Thelma Drayer, who needs a conservator as she succumbs to dementia. Past relationships are revived when the joke-slinging, fiercely independent Thelma tries to keep her brimming bank account from the hands of
scoundrels. She despises her exhusband, nurses a grudge against her estranged son, and tries to keep her publicly appointed attorney, Justin Shapiro, at arm’s length. Shapiro comes to love the 83year-old spirited woman, but his affection might not be enough to save her from herself. Actor-director Kevin Wickersham plays Thelma’s son, Michael, in the reading. Wickersham is among the leadership of Denton’s Fight Boy Theatre, a for-profit company that produces new plays on a regular basis. He could empathize with the playwrights who sent scripts to the adjudicators. “For me, the worst part of doing a new play is self-doubt,” Wickersham said. “It’s always
funny when you’re sitting around a room with your friends, throwing out jokes. Then you start wondering if it’s really funny, or if an audience will hate it.” Self-doubt eclipses even the fear of trying to lure audiences to see a play that hasn’t been road-tested. “It’s also scary when you’re directing a script you wrote,” said Bryan Patrick, a Denton actor and writer. “You cared enough about something to put it on paper, and now you’re giving it to other people. It’s not easy. Someone who is passionate enough to do this and to write a script, they deserve to have someone get involved in it.” See METHOD on 11

Carol Howdeshell reads the role of Thelma in Family Matters. She said the interest in the festival took her by surprise. The festival is new, and doesn’t have a reputation, something that can entice more participation. “I was absolutely amazed at where these plays came from,” she said. “How did they know about Denton, you know? It made me appreciate the town.” Brinker said emerging playwrights seem to yearn for opportunities. With so many companies having to give up most of their seasons to known plays and musicals, there isn’t always a lot of room for new work. “And you need time for someone to sit down and read through new plays, and it’s a luxury to have that time,” Brinker said. “There are companies — like Sundown [Collaborative Theatre] and Fight Boy — who are dedicated to new work, and other companies in the metroplex, too. We learned through our playwriting group that there are writers in North Texas who would love to have a way to get their work in front of someone who will read it.” Brinker said the festival meets every part of the theater’s mission statement: It educates audiences of all ages with highquality theater, invites the com-

munity to participate as volunteers, and contributes to the region’s cultural life. Denton writers were invited to be part of the panels leading the audience “talk-back” sessions, which will follow each staged reading of the five award-winning plays. The four writers are performer, director and composer John Evarts, Denton Record-Chronicle crime reporter and nonfiction author Donna Fielder, parodist and lyricist Donna Trammell, and teacher and biographer Randy Schmidt. Local counselors Susanne Coffey, Dan Creson and Linda Rubin will join pan-
els to frame discussions through the lens of mental health. Professional actor, director and choreographer Michael Serrecchia will lead a talk and a question-and-answer session on Friday. Serrecchia was in the original cast of A Chorus Line, and during his 18 years on Broadway, he worked with some of the best — Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse and Tommy Tune are on the short list. Now Serrecchia works in Dallas-Fort Worth professional theater. Brinker said the community theater doesn’t know if the festival will become a yearly event.
“We’re hopeful that it could be an annual event,” Brinker said. “We worked out a lot of kinks this year, and doing it again would be easier.” Brinker said the five prizewinning plays — all of them one act — are strong enough to be fully produced locally. “The production board would have to make that decision, but I think any of these plays could be done,” she said. “All of the plays are good enough.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
