The three members of the Spring Standards are old friends. They first started making music as teenagers in the rural Delaware-Pennsylvania border area.
Old Standards B
Brooklyn trio crafts music seemingly born of yesteryear
rooklyn-based the Spring Standards are hitting the road on a summer tour and are bringing their brand of indie-pop back to Dan’s Silverleaf on Wednesday. The band recently released the double-disc album yellow//gold — full of fun, upbeat and sometimes emotionally charged songs about everything from growing up to romance to embarking on new life adventures. The trio began playing together as teenagers in the rural landscapes of the Delaware-Pennsylvania border. Those experiences are detailed in songs on yellow,
while the second EP, gold, describes their new lives in the big city of New York. “We were drawn to each other because we liked music that wasn’t necessarily the ‘cool’ music of the time — stuff we found in our parents’ records,” band member Heather Robb said. “Then we just couldn’t seem to get rid of each other over the years.” The trio — James Cleare, Robb and James Smith — pens tunes that are catchy and relatable. Yellow//gold was created through donations from fans via Kickstarter. To thank fans for their contributions, the band created handmade, limited-edition versions of
each EP from recycled materials. You can even watch the band doing so, and bringing back the old floppy disc, in their new video “Watch the Moon Disappear.” It’s clear that the Spring Standards keep things high energy. Dancing shoes would be considered appropriate attire for their live shows. The Spring Standards said they consider themselves a live band first and foremost. The band is currently in the middle of a tour supporting Rhett Miller, although Miller won’t make the Denton show. Instead, they’ll be joined by North Texas favorite Spooky Folk on Wednesday. Fans can
also look forward to catching the Spring Standards on Conan on TBS on June 18, about which the band says they’re too excited for words. Sounds like: Denton’s Midlake invited Emmylou Harris to shed her Red Dirt twang for just a few songs. Straightforward and British folk-rocksy, the Spring Standards make music for stargazing and road trips around sleepy roads after dark. Details: The Spring Standards and Spooky Folk play at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Cover is $7.

Troubadours’ latest packs bruising punch, and they’re proud to say so Chickasaw, Caddo, Apache and Kickapoo and others — you’re likely on the turnpike at some point. Adding the word troubadours to the name was a way of paying homage to their songwriting influences and heroes. The release of their third full-length album, Goodbye Normal Street, has solidified the Troubadours as folk-country trailblazers whose sound
can be compared to the styling of icons like Waylon Jennings and Woodie Guthrie. “We’ve grown a lot as a band,” Edwards said of the new album. “It’s a little bit meaner than our other records.” Turnpike Troubadours’ records feel like they’re effortlessly recreated live. ‘Alien’ director lights up screens again with this creation myth, of sorts
— from Othello, by William Shakespeare
rometheus is two hours-plus of sustained, nerve-shattering suspense, artfully punctuated by electrifying jolts of terror. Director Ridley Scott’s new fast-moving sciencefiction thriller is ostensibly a prequel to his 1979 classic Alien, and, despite a resemblance in plot, Prometheus looks
refreshingly original. Granted, screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof dip into some existing material for the narrative (as did Shakespeare). But Scott and his team expand on the similarities between Alien and Prometheus, taking them, reworking them, and then imag-

ining a new story to complement the spectacular mixture of familiar and unfamiliar creatures, dark and creepy settings, cinematography that seems to draw out the hidden menace in every scene, and polished special effects — both computer-generated and traditional.
And, in addition to this impressive combination of elements, Scott delivers several individual scenes guaranteed to disturb yet impress. The movie’s main flaw comes in human form, as almost all the characters seem cardboard and thinly drawn. Despite the decent cast, performances end up counting for little, as otherwise minor actors could have taken the same roles to similar effects. The story kicks in on Earth when two scientists (Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green) make the connection See PROMETHEUS on 10

Unwanted animals
Superfluous ‘Madagascar’ sequel is a blur of color, action and not much else By David Germain AP Movie Writer
Ben Stiller’s Alex the lion reviews Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted so we don’t have to. Halfway into the third animated tale about New York City zoo animals on their overseas adventures, Alex tells some new circus friends that their act was not too entertaining for families “because you were just going through the motions out there.” So, too, for Madagascar 3, which goes through a lot of motions — explosions of action and image so riotously paced that they become narcotic and numbing. With Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, creators of the first two Madagascar flicks, joined by a third director in Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2), the filmmakers just can’t stop stuffing things,
to the point of distraction, into Europe’s Most Wanted. The result: a cute story about zoo animals running off to join the circus becomes overwhelmed by a blur of color and animated acrobatics. The pictures certainly are pretty, but the filmmakers apparently are unwilling to risk the slightest lapse of audience attention, so they put the movie on fast-forward and let centripetal force hurtle viewers along from start to finish. Madagascar 3 opens with Alex and zoo pals Marty the zebra (voiced by Chris Rock), Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) still stuck in Africa, dreaming of their return to New York. Along with lemur king Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his flunky (Cedric the Entertainer), they follow Skipper (voiced by

co-director McGrath) and his wily penguin cohorts to the casinos of Monte Carlo, hoping to hitch a ride home. The journey from Africa to Europe just happens, with no explanation, begging the question, how much harder would it be for the gang to find its way back to New York on its own? But that’s the sort of thinking for which the filmmakers aim to leave no time. The critters raise a ruckus at the casino, setting vile French animal-control officer Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand) on their tail. The animals may be as cuddly as ever, but the
design of Chantel is creepy in an off-putting way; she’s like an early take on 101 Dalmatians heavy Cruella De Vil, discarded by Walt Disney out of sheer repugnance. On the run from Chantel, the animals take refuge aboard a circus train, where they team up with Vitaly the tiger (Bryan Cranston), Gia the jaguar (Jessica Chastain) and Stefano the sea lion (Martin Short). The circus may prove the gang’s ticket home, but only if they can turn the act into a dazzler. From this point on, Madagascar 3 mostly is a cartoon kaleidoscope, filled with blinding pyrotechnics and impossible gymnastics that Cirque du Soleil could only dream about. The animation is grand, and the lovely images may be enough to send really young kids away happy. Their parents might leave feeling they’ve been taken in by some carny sleight-of-hand, though.
Prometheus
of various hieroglyphics and cave drawings with an ancient visit to this planet by alien beings. A subsequent two-year trip into outer space lands the hibernating crew (including Charlize Theron as the captain and Michael Fassbender as a devious robot) on a planet where the human race may have begun. But once the ship Prometheus lands and begins its investigation, well, things just don’t seem to go right. From there, various conflicts and emergencies play out, with Scott orchestrating every one for maximum effect. During pre-release, Prometheus’ creators have attempted to avoid leaks about the film’s content, and the reasons behind that restriction become more apparent when attempting to describe the obstacles faced by Prometheus and its crew. Special effects have improved greatly since Alien, but Scott shows a sure hand in the supervising of his intricate scenes. Unlike Othello, Ridley Scott succeeds in reluming this Promethean heat.

if exhausting, rendition of good versus evil. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. — Boo Allen Battleship (###) This is big, dumb fun that knows it’s big, dumb fun and enthusiastically embraces its big, dumb fun nature. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a lieutenant on one Naval destroyer while his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), is the commanding officer of another. Both answer to Adm. Shane (a withering, well-cast Liam Neeson). They’re all taking part in some international war games off the Hawaiian coast when a satellite signal provokes some angry extraterrestrials. Rated PG-13, 131 minutes. — The Associated Press Bernie (##1/2) Jack Black is the picture of silliness in this whimsical, fact-based film set in Carthage. He plays a good-natured, well-loved funeral home employee who befriends a local widow (Shirley MacLaine) known for her cruelty and stinginess. But with Bernie, she blossoms, taking him on trips and spending money freely. That is, until she turns up dead. Matthew McConaughey plays the eventual prosecutor. Directed by Richard Linklater. Rated PG-13, 104 minutes. — B.A. Cherynobyl Diaries Six young tourists in search of adventure abroad hire an extreme tour guide, who takes them to a ghost town thought to have been deserted in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. With Devin Kelley, Jonathan Sadowski and Ingrid Bolso Berdal. Directed by Brad Parker. Rated R, 90
minutes. — Los Angeles Times Dark Shadows (#) Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are snuggled warmly in their comfort zone in this chilly horror-comedy, their eighth collaboration as director and star, respectively, and their weakest by far. Barnabas Collins (Depp), a vampire who’s been buried alive for nearly two centuries suddenly finds himself back in his insular Maine hometown in 1972. By the time Burton finally puts his visual effects skills to their best use, in a climactic showdown between Barnabas and the witch who cursed him (Eva Green), it’s too late. With Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley. Rated PG, 116 minutes. — AP The Dictator (###) Sacha Baron Cohen stars as the title character, Adm. Gen. Aladeen, the ruler of the fictitious oil-rich African country Wadiya. He comes to America, loses his trademark beard, lands with a Brooklyn feminist (Anna Faris), and then tries to win his country back as well as his new girlfriend. Over-thetop silliness filled with insults and fish-out-of-water humor provide plenty of laughs, however squirminducing. Rated R, 83 minutes. — B.A. For Greater Glory Against the backdrop of the Cristero War in 1920s Mexico, a retired general is reluctantly drawn into conflict against a ruthless government. With Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Peter O’Toole and Oscar Isaac. Rated R, 143 minutes. — LAT Men in Black 3 (###) Josh Brolin impersonating the young Tommy Lee Jones is worth the price of admission to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling, deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan in this sentimental sequel to the scifi comedies about secret agents in
black suits who save the world from aliens. An alien serial killer (Jemaine Clement) has traveled back in time to save the arm that Agent K shot off in 1969, and Agent J (Will Smith) must go back and save his future partner. That leaves an awful lot of this movie in Smith’s usually capable hands. But if director Barry Sonnenfeld has lost his fastball, Smith has lost a step or two running the bases. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Snow White & the Huntsman (###1/2) Astonishingly beautiful and breathtaking in its brutal imagery, thrilling and frightening in equal measure, yet as bereft of satisfying substance as a poisoned apple. Director Rupert Sanders’ revisionist take on the classic Brothers Grimm fable upends expectations of traditional gender roles while simultaneously embracing what a fairy tale should be. It’s dark and dangerous, vicious and violent. And yet the performances — notably from Kristen Stewart as the title character — don’t always live up to the film's visionary promise. With Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — AP What to Expect When You’re Expecting (##1/2) If only the entire movie had focused on the dads’ group and didn’t just drop in on them a handful of times, we might have been onto something here. Chris Rock, Thomas Lennon and Rob Huebel are among the dudes who meet regularly to push their kids in tricked-out strollers and talk guy stuff. Their banter livens up what is a rather predictable and cliched depiction of pregnancy. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks and Anna Kendrick. Rated PG13, 110 minutes. — AP
