enton’s Juneteenth celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend. Juneteenth honors the day — June 19, 1865 — when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and that slaves were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. There’s speculation why the news arrived late — from a messenger murdered on his way to Texas to the information being deliberately withheld — but what is known for sure is that Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S. Some 5,000 people are expected to attend Denton’s Juneteenth celebration on Saturday. But first is tonight’s Heritage of Hope Celebration. Community leaders and some of the area’s top high school graduates will be honored. New this year is a cultural arts exhibit. At 4 p.m. Friday, judging begins as grill masters compete

to win this year’s annual barbecue cook-off. At 6 p.m., the annual Gospel Extravaganza brings together area choirs to rejoice and sing praise music. Some of the featured gospel performers will be Katina Sono Butler, the Kingdom Manifesters praise team, Archie Robinson, Lynn Smith and Tre Nelson. All of the events lead up to Saturday’s all-day bash, starting at 9 a.m. with a coed softball tournament. At the same time, parade participants will

be assembling at the Denton Civic Center. The annual Juneteenth Grand Parade starts at 10 a.m. Floats, bands, steppers and plenty of community spirit will wind through the Square to Southeast Denton, ending at Fred Moore Park. The celebration will continue until 8 p.m. with food vendors, music and live entertainment, children’s games and prizes, and a threeon-three basketball tournament. Live music will play throughout the day, with the Inner City All Stars, the all-girl band Beauty and the Beats, the Dynamic Wichita Kansas Steppers, and rappers SmoothD and Madam Ice. The headliner is Dallas jazz singer and saxophonist Don Diego, who will perform at 6:15 p.m. on the C.H. Collins Activity Stage at Fred Moore Park. The group released its EP Rise With the Tide last August, and has performed in respected Dallas and Fort Worth venues. It’s back to Denton this weekend for a gig at 10 p.m. Saturday at the Boiler Room, 101 W. Hickory St. Influences aside, Bronze Whaler makes shoe-gazer rock that rides the edge of hard, noisy rock. Whaler’s music strikes a symphonic balance between poppy rock and hard rock. Bronze Whaler headlines after sets by March of the Bull, Denton punk-popsters Blunt Force and Layla. Details: Doors open at 8 p.m. Cover is $7 for ages 21 and older, $10 for those younger than 21. Sounds a little like: Incubus and Minus the Bear. Moody guitar waves ride out songs that sound mostly sad and meditative. Rise With the Tide goes well with long drives after sundown. I Ryan Thomas Becker must not get a lot of sleep. The Denton artist — who seems to be moving toward “institution” status in a town already well represented by revered musicians — is part of yet another interest: the Slow Burners. He’s not the heavy hitter in the band. Singer-guitarist George Neal — from Little Grizzly — brings heartfelt impressions to the lyrics. Grady Don Sandlin, the other half of RTB2, a duo that includes Becker, plays drums. Becker plays guitar and keyboards, while Jason Lynn Bacchus plays bass and Jeffrey Gruber plays guitar. With Becker and Gruber in the house, the Slow Burners

The Slow Burners play Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Friday night. can’t help but serve up stout guitar work. Neal lends his sandy voice to the ambling fret-and-pick playing. Sure, he sometimes can’t lift his vocal heft over the higher notes, but he doesn’t care and neither do we. Details: The band plays a set Friday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Hickory St., sharing the stage with Deep Snapper and American Werewolf Academy. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $5. Warning to other local musicians: Becker could start a playground brawl if Denton revives Rock Lottery. We

haven’t found enough musicians who don’t do a sort of we’re-not-worthy head bow at the mention of his name to form a team, but we figure there are enough local musicians who love him to make him the secret ingredient to a lottery band. Sounds like: a companion act to Denton act the Hope Trust, and the Proclaimers after less Guinness and more rehearsal. Sometimes, we though we heard a Modest Mouse grunt, but really, it was a growl barely reminiscent of the Pixies’ Black Francis. — Lucinda Breeding

Lewis and Clark, seen through modern lens

U

niversity of North Texas art professor Brent Phelps has seen his photographs of the Lewis and Clark expedition trail — as it is seen now and in the 20th century — in a lot of galleries. Nineteen pieces from that show — a photographic survey of the explorers’ trans-Mississippi expedition — are on exhibit at UNT on the Square, a downtown gallery and performance venue. The exhibit runs through Aug. 13. Phelps, a National Endowment for the Arts fellow, traveled the trail and shot photos of what stands today along the

passage — often in vivid color, but also in grayish hues. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. UNT on the Square is at 109 N. Elm St. This exhibition is presented by the UNT Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, whose mission includes showcasing creative arts and research in the arts at UNT. 8: The Mormon Proposition (###) Compelling if sometimes unfocused documentary about the 2008 voter passage of a California referendum that reversed the state’s earlier legalization of gay marriage, and specifically the aggressive and expensive campaign launched by the LDS church to ensure its success. The film bashes the church as you might expect, but it also offers some insight into the issues at hand, right down to questions of love and human rights. Not rated, 78 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (###1/2) Amusing documentary about the life and career of the legendary comedienne, who remains a workaholic well into her 70s, both in stand-up clubs and various television ventures. It examines her influence as a groundbreaking comic and salutes her versatility, but the film is more than just a tribute. It also delves into Rivers’ personal life filled with tragedy and triumph, and offers a portrait that’s both funny and emotionally revealing. Rated R, 84 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J. Jonah Hex A disfigured bounty hunter (Josh Brolin) battles a villain aiming to unleash hell on Earth. With Megan Fox and John Malkovich. Rated PG-13, 81 minutes. — The Associated Press Ondine (###1/2) Syracuse (Colin Farrell), an Irish fisherman, pulls up his net one day only to find a beautiful woman, Ondine (Alicja Bachleda), trapped and unconscious. From this, writer-director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) weaves a beguiling tale of mystery and romance, as Syracuse and his daughter seek to find Ondine's origins — whether they be human, mermaid or some other magical creature. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle makes the lovely Irish landscapes shimmer. Rated PG13, 111 minutes. At the Magnolia and the Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen

Disney Pixar

Toys are back in town Third time around, ‘Story’ still as charming as ever It’s been 15 years since a movie called Toy Story revolutionized animated filmmaking. The charming comedy about the relationships among a child’s anthropomorphic toys spawned a phenomenon of computer-generated features that dominates the medium these days. Yet even now, the franchise that marked the feature debut of the Pixar Entertainment juggernaut can still show its competition a thing or two. Eleven years after the first sequel to Toy Story became a sensation,

Toy Story 3 proves the characters and concept stand the test of time. As with the other films in Pixar’s unprecedented winning streak, the third Toy Story installment — in 3-D this time — shows that the script is still the most important thing. It’s a superb mix of fresh and familiar aimed more toward fans of the first two films than as an effort to introduce a new generation to Woody, Buzz and the gang. The clever story sees teenag-

er Andy heading off to college, forcing him to relegate his loyal toys from his childhood to either the attic or the trash. But a mix-up separates sheriff Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) from astronaut buddy Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and friends, causing them to be shipped to a day care center where the toys are mistreated and bullied. It’s up to the loyalty and resourcefulness of Woody and friends to return themselves to their rightful owner. The result is both humorous and heartfelt. Several of the new characters are amusing (including a doll romance involving Ken and Barbie), and an extended sequence in classic Toy Story fashion during which the resilient toys attempt to escape from the day care is

When an ambitious music executive (Jonah Hill) tries to escort the impetuous Snow to Los Angeles for a comeback show, it leads to a wild adventure. The film generates plenty of vulgar laughs, mostly from random one-liners and a slew of great cameos. Yet the reliance on uninspired drug gags and lack of realworld plausibility take over. Rated R, 109 minutes. — T.J. Iron Man 2 (##1/2) Robert Downey Jr. returns as billionaire industrialist

Tony Stark/Iron Man, and he again faces off against those who doubt his love of country and his ability to defend it. Mickey Rourke stars as a mad Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell plays a scheming competitor. Jon Favreau again directs, and it looks like more of the same, with few additional effects or breakthrough surprises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. The Karate Kid (###) A remake of the 1984 film might seem unnecessary, but at least this version

changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). While the direction needs more discipline, the backdrops are scenic, and Smith and Chan generate a convincing student-teacher chemistry. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J. Shrek Forever After (##1/2) All this

By Todd Jorgenson Film Critic

Toy Story 3 Rated G, 102 minutes. Opens Friday.

both hilarious and exciting. Lee Unkrich, an editor on the first two films, capably takes the directing reins, and the Pixar team again allows its imagination to run wild with dozens of new toys on display that should provide a nostalgic kick for those who remember the days before children had cellphones at age 10 and e-mail addresses at 12. Although it almost overstays its welcome, Toy Story 3 is a visual and narrative treat. The story wraps up capably in what could be the final sequel in the series. Then again, maybe it should continue to infinity — and beyond.

3-D and IMAX technology can’t hide the uninspired feeling given off by this fourth installment in the erstwhile hilarious animated franchise. There are a few solid laughs, musical numbers and clever fairy-tale lampoons — the type that made the first two Shrek films so amusing. But this one feels more like a retread than a fresh idea, with Shrek’s marriage being threatened over his frustration with fatherhood and a midlife crisis. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J.

Annual event a sight to behold as aircraft cut a path through Denton sky By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer

hen U.S. Air Force Capt. Joe “Rifle” Shetterly climbs into the one-seat cockpit of an A-10A Thunderbolt II, he’s on a mission. When he’s stationed in Afghanistan, the pilot is on his way to provide assistance to ground troops. Back in the U.S., his job is to educate the public about the Air Force and its use of the impressive twin-engine jet aircraft, nicknamed “The Warthog.” “Close air support is the bread and butter of our mission, and that means we are

able to operate and deliver precision munitions within close proximity of friendly forces,” Shetterly said.

A Pitts SB2 demonstration will be given at Saturday’s air show.

With the help of his highly trained crew, Shetterly will demonstrate the capabilities of the airplane through a 15-minute aerial display this Saturday at the 2010 Denton

Airshow. The U.S. Air Force A-10A Thunderbolt II West Coast Demonstration Team headlines the entertainment for this year’s event. Shetterly described what air show attendees are likely to experience. “I’m doing maneuvers and pointing the airplane at the ground and going upside down,” he said. “During the demo when we simulate shooting the gun or dropping bombs, I do an accelerated aggressive recovery at the bottom of a dive toward the ground,” which, he said, “makes for a big airflow disruption over the top of the wing and you hear the air. It almost sounds like an explosion.” “That diving toward the ground is simulating a tactical weapons delivery like we would do in combat,” he said. During Saturday’s performance, another trained Warthog pilot will keep in radio contact with Shetterly

from the ground to make sure that he stays within the parameters of the plane’s capabilities. “The whole point is to avoid something catastrophic from happening, so we can continue to go out there and showcase the good things we do,” he said. “It’s truly just a safety measure.” According to Shetterly, the Warthog was conceived around a “giant gun,” with seven barrels that are operated hydraulically. He said each barrel is nearly 8 feet long and shoots 30 mm rounds at 70 rounds per second. “There’s never been a larger gun mounted or strapped to a fightersize aircraft,” Shetterly said. The gun is powerful enough to destroy ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles. One of the advantages of this particular aircraft is its ability to remain airborne for long periods of time,

enabling the pilot who is “on station” to respond quickly when help is needed on the ground. Shetterly and the crew will be on hand to talk with air show attendees, who will be able to get a close-up look at the aircraft up until an hour before the demonstration. The crew, which includes Staff Sgt. Dino Levidiotis, Staff Sgt. Paul Riebe, Staff Sgt. Mark Bapp and Senior Airman Matt Turner, will be available to answer questions. “The whole point is showcasing to the taxpayers what we’re doing and why it matters,” Shetterly said. Also on display will be the Flagship Detroit, one of American Airlines’ fleet of Douglas DC-3s, manufactured in 1937. In 2004, the Flagship Detroit Foundation purchased the airplane with the goal of continuing to maintain and operate the aircraft as a tribute to American Airlines employees. Other grounded aircraft on display will be a T-6A Texan II, F4U Corsair, T-44 Pegasus, Douglas DC-3, SNJ-5 Texan, Pitts S2B, T-34B Mentor, T-
