Sanger’s Sarah Vinson releases debut album

ALBUM RELEASE SHOW
Denton Time
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
Sarah Vinson isn’t preparing something to fall back on. The 18-year-old Sanger resident is promoting her debut album, Shine, through Tate Music Group. Otherwise, she’s on campus at Dallas Baptist University, studying music business courses. “Music has always been my passion,” said Vinson, who has already put in countless hours in front of her congregation with a church praise team. “I started singing with my mom in church when I was 3. I started taking piano lessons at the Denton Music Academy when I was a kid, and then I started studying guitar with Victor Gann.” Vinson then joined the nonprofit agency Actors, Models & Talent for Christ, which grooms performers and models to represent ministries and Christian ideals in the entertainment industry. She attended a Florida conference staged by the agency. That conference put her in touch with Tate Music Group, a Mustang, Oklahoma-based label friendly to emerging Christian artists. Vinson said she started writing music when she took up the guitar. “When I started working on chord progressions, that’s really when I started writing songs,” she said. “It was sort of natural.” Shine is a contemporary gospel record delivered with folkpop appeal. “There are three genres that
make my heart happy — gospel, folk and alternative,” she said. “I love the Civil Wars and the Decemberists. And I was brought up listening to Boston, Van Halen, AC/DC and Queen. So I can’t not love rock, right?” Shine reflects both Vinson’s experience and her youth. She penned eight of the nine tracks, and easily gets radio-ready, midtempo songs with hooks. Her contralto doesn’t soar easily to the higher notes that she’s written for herself, but she hits them true. And Shine could benefit from some songwriting dynamics. Vinson said she did have to
decide how overt her Christianity would be on the debut. Denton boasts a fair few folk acts populated by Christians who express their faith more metaphorically, sidestepping the worship-oriented tunes altogether. Both Doug Burr, Least of These and Big Round Spectacles write from a faithful point of view, but employ broad poetic devices when they write. Not so with Vinson. In Shine, she embraces God-talk in “Lover of My Soul” and “God I’m Yours. “That was actually a big struggle of mine,” she said. “I didn’t know if I wanted to include my worship songs, or if I

was just going to use my testimony in a more symbolic way. I felt like my relationship with Christ is so important, and it’s such a huge part of my life, that I couldn’t avoid putting those songs on the record.” In “The Moon,” one of the strongest tracks on the record, Vinson shows herself up to the challenge. It references faith in the same way Jars of Clay reached beyond its Christian audience with its 1995 Top 40 hit “Flood.” Vinson said she hasn’t discussed a second record through Tate, but is considering recording again at Dallas Baptist, where music students’ tuition includes studio time. Regardless, Vinson plans to continue writing for herself, and for other artists, if possible. And she hopes to continue recording. “I think the thing with church music is connecting the song to the words,” Vinson said. “Music is transformative. Music is about bringing people together where they are. When you get into music that has been perfectly planned with the sermon, there’s nothing like it.”

Bonnie Norris mans the microphone and the fiddle with an expert’s ease, while brother Nick makes it count on the guitar. The Norrises are a Denton institution — and still a youthful one, at that. Denton Time ad Cop/Good Cop (voiced by Liam Neeson) is an unpredictable force in The Lego Movie, which screens tonight at Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St., as part of the Denton parks department’s free outdoor movie series. In the animated feature, an evil tyrant is making noises about gluing the Lego universe into permanent stasis. An ordinary Lego construction worker named Emmet could save the stacked plastic world by fulfilling a prophecy that poises a “special” Lego character as the savior of the snap-together race. With the voices of Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks and Alison Brie. Families can bring blankets and lawn chairs to the screening. Gather at 8 p.m. for crafts and a marshmallow roast in the park, and the movie starts at 9 p.m. Rated PG, 100 minutes.

OPENING FRIDAY Ivory Tower ( ) Andrew Rossi’s provocative documentary gives a decent examination — considering time restraints — of the sorry state of the nation’s higher education system. He covers long-term financial burdens of college, turmoil at a tuition-free college (Cooper Union), excessive partying (Arizona State University), and the shaky promises offered by online courses. Interviewees include Mark Zuckerberg, California Gov. Jerry Brown and many college presidents. Rated PG-13, 90 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Hellion ( ) Kat Candler wrote and directed this gritty drama about a single father, Hollis (Aaron Paul), in the Beaumont-Galveston area. He drinks too much and has a bad tem-
per, causing trouble with authorities as well as with his 13-year-old hellion son Jacob (Josh Wiggins). Candler and his capable cast capture the achingly real pain and agony involved when families tear apart. Not rated, 94 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — B.A. Transformers: Age of Extinction Three years after an epic battle has forced the shape-shifting robots known as Transformers into hiding, a garage inventor makes a startling discovery and gets caught up in a battle for the fate of Earth. With Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer and Sophia Miles. Rated PG-13. — Los Angeles Times We Are the Best ( 1⁄2) Three girls in early 1980s Stockholm respond to normal adolescent angst of school and parents by embracing punk rock. Some of their opposition and their pranks may provide a few laughs, but the music rarely takes off. What’s left is an interesting but not always engaging observational exercise. Written and directed by Lukas Moodysson and based on the comic book by Coco Moodysson, his wife. Not rated, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.
NOW PLAYING Edge of Tomorrow ( 1⁄2) Military marketer Maj. William Cage
(Tom Cruise) is thrown into battle against extraterrestrials by an unsympathetic general (the excellent Brendan Gleeson), and then finds himself stuck in a mysterious time loop. Cruise dies dozens of times over and over, often in comical ways. Dying again and again, Cruise has rarely been so likable. This is Groundhog Day with guns. Edge of Tomorrow entertains in its narrative playfulness — another entry in the burgeoning fad of puzzle-making sci-fi, as seen in Inception and Looper. With Bill Paxton and Emily Blunt. Rated R, 119 minutes. — The Associated Press The Fault in Our Stars ( 1⁄2) Shailene Woodley, who can do no acting wrong, brings a welcome reality to The Fault in Our Stars, a perfectly serviceable teen date picture that teenage girls will have to bribe teenage boys to sit through. Sweet, cute to the point of cutesy, it’s a weeper about doomed teenagers (Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who played her brother in Divergent) who meet in a cancer patients support group and dare to fall in love. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — McClatchyTribune News Service Godzilla ( 1⁄2) Godzilla, that tail-swinging menace from the deep, is back with a pair of friends. What’s particularly weird about this Godzilla is that for long stretches, all it shows is destruction. Brian Cranston plays a scientist in Japan, working in a nucle-
ar plant, who notices something very wrong on his computer. A stonyfaced Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Cranston’s son, a lieutenant, and Elizabeth Olsen is his wife. Unfortunately, director Gareth Edwards concentrated too much on the action to worry about the performances. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — San Francisco Chronicle How to Train Your Dragon 2 ( ) The follow-up to the muchadmired animated How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t play it safe, and that’s why it’s the rare sequel that doesn’t feel somewhat stale. Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon 2 returns us to Berk, where our young Viking hero, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), lives and frolics with his devoted dragon, Toothless. Five years have passed, and now Berk is a virtual playground for dragons and Vikings alike. When Hiccup and his girlfriend Astrid (America Ferrera) discover a vicious villain (Djimon Hounsou) who’s building a dragon army, Hiccup resolves to stop him. With the voices of Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig. Rated PG, 102 minutes. — AP Jersey Boys ( 1⁄2) The Broadway musical about Frank Valli and the Four Seasons delivers a few good numbers, but overall director Clint Eastwood fails to energize a film that needs it. At its core, it’s the story of
the loyalty of Valli (John Lloyd Young) and his friends, who stay together despite themselves. With Christopher Walken, Mike Doyle and Vincent Piazza. Rated R, 134 minutes. — Boo Allen Maleficent ( ) It takes talent to walk around in a black leather-horned cap and not look silly. Angelina Jolie turns in a magnificent performance in Maleficent as the (now we are told) misunderstood villain of Sleeping Beauty. Jolie rules this film with a powerful acting grace accented by director Robert Stromberg’s film style that shifts from film noir to children’s comedy without a flinch. There’s just not enough fleshing out of the story to support these elements. As is, the film is fun but not memorable. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Fresno Bee A Million Ways to Die in the West ( 1⁄2) Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, Ted) wants to be a movie star in the worst way. He plays Albert, a timid sheep rancher in 1882 Arizona whose clumsiness and cowardice costs him his best girl (Amanda Seyfried). His pals Edward (Giovanni Ribisi) and Ruth (Sarah Silverman) worry he’ll never get over that — until Anna (Charlize Theron), the moll of a desperado (Liam Neeson), ducks into town. Rated R, 116 minutes. — MCT Think Like a Man Too ( 1⁄2) The great appeal of 2012’s Think Like a

Rom-com parody has laughs, delivered with too many winks
By Jake Coyle AP Film Writer
David Wain’s They Came Together identifies the tropes of the romantic comedy with uncommon acuity. If only it would stop winking so much. Wain has made his film with an enviable collection of funny people. It stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler as the intractably drawn together couple, and Wain wrote it with Wet Hot American Summer co-writer and fellow The State alumnus Michael Showalter. Nearly everyone in the movie, even in small roles filled by Ed Helms to Bill Hader, is a comic talent. Most if not all of the filmmakers and cast have themselves trafficked in that so-loved, so-loathed genre — including Wain’s last movie, Wanderlust. They Came Together thus feels like a parody party, thrown by those who know rom-coms from the inside out. But in spoofing romantic comedies, Wain has made a film that can be both hailed and derided for its nonstop cleverness. They Came Together is an excellent sketch. It is a less successful movie. The film is framed by the couple — Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) — explaining to friends (Hader and Ellie Kemper) over dinner how they met. The cliches come fast and furious, beginning with their repeated insistence that New York — a city that should feel ashamed of itself for how many cheesy romances it has fostered — is really, truly its own character in their story. At repeating this fake witticism, Poehler mugs for the camera, looking directly into it, the overriding posture of Wain’s self-aware satire.
MOVIES Continued from Page 7 Man is that it took four beautiful black actresses (Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good and Gabrielle Union) and put them right at the center of a film. It made for a comedy that was unexpected, refreshing and

Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star as a couple drawn together against all odds in the rom-com spoof “They Came Together.”
Molly and Joel are opposites on laughably extreme ends of commerce. Evoking Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, she has a little candy store (Upper Sweet Side) so unconcerned with profit that it doesn’t even charge customers. He’s working for the giant corporate monolith Candy Sys-
tems & Research. The two are nevertheless attracted to each other by their common interests (“You like fiction books, too? No way!”) and soon are going through the genre’s motions of running to bed with a trail of clothes (only to be found making out fully attired), meeting the parents (hers are white supremacists) and having the predictable fight. In the line of the movie, the relationship is over-dramatically declared “like rain-proofing on a wooden deck: Finished!” All of this is naturally quite funny, and — especially amid summer blockbusters — the
low-budget slapstick of They Came Together is a cool breeze. Some of Wain’s best touches are in the filmmaking: subtitles that are sneezed away, blatantly cliched apartment decor, a ridiculous zoom-in on Rudd’s face. But when Wain and Showalter satirized summer camp movies in Wet Hot American Summer, they did it with fuller character-based comedy. Wain, Showalter and Michael Ian Black (who plays a co-worker obviously sleeping with Joel’s pre-Molly girlfriend) have a long and reliably hysterical history of taking simple premises to extremes of absurdity. The best scene in Wanderlust, for
example, basically halted the story for a lengthy scene of Rudd psyching himself up for sex in front of a mirror. But without a baseline for the comedy, the layers of spoof don’t have the foundation to carry even a short movie. (The film is just 83 minutes.) When one of the few primarily dramatic actors in They Came Together — Michael Shannon, type-cast to the max as a madman let out of jail — makes a fiery cameo, the movie gets a jolt. They Came Together could learn from him: No matter the movie, the always committed Shannon would never dare wink at an audience.
welcome. Kevin Hart is center-stage now, still funny like before, but alas, much of what made the earlier movie special is gone. This time they’re all in Las Vegas to celebrate the wedding of Candace (Hall) and Michael (Terrence Jenkins). The filmmakers’ efforts to be nonstop zany are misbegotten. — SFC 22 Jump Street ( 1⁄2) You’re pretty much going to have to see 22
Jump Street twice — just to catch all the jokes the roars of laughter make you miss. This buddy cop parody hits its sweet spots with bromance gags carried to hilarious extremes by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, too-dumbto-be-a-cop riffs by Tatum and a couple of vintage, sneering rants by Ice Cube. Undercover cops Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) are sent off to M.C. State University to track
down a new designer drug that college kids are using to help them focus. A pack of writers, and the co-directors of the first film, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, conjure up good, quick-footed and foul-mouthed fun. Rated R, 112 minutes. — MCT X-Men: Days of Future Past ( 1⁄2) In this latest episode of the mutant clan’s saga, Logan (Hugh Jackman) travels back to 1973 to stop
the plans of an evil scientist (Peter Dinklage). Director Bryan Singer ably juggles past and present, with his team facing off against a new batch of robotic warriors with the help of the young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). The young work with the old, integrating the special effects along with the era’s bad hair and wide lapels. Rated PG-13, 131 minutes. — B.A.

Denton band Chambers finds room to grow and flourish on debut album By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
enton’s fledgling mood-rock quartet Chambers looks to be destined for coveted Dallas music awards this year. Chambers, the brainchild of chronically underrated Denton song craftsman and guitarist Judson Valdez, just dropped its nine-track debut album to critical praise (no doubt helped by a cheeky social media campaign “Everybody Hates Chambers,” a video promotion that include the blessing of some of the city’s most respected indie musicians), got picked up by a label and has already done some touring. “Mostly, the record evolved from a lot of solo stuff I’d been working on,” Valdez said. “Then when we all started working

together, it changed and became what ended up on the album.” The songs on Inner Room reflect Valdez’s ability to tune his radar into simple, melancholy melodies that blossomed under the influence of University of North Texas theater arts major Piper Johnson’s choir-girl vocals, which often drift around Valdez’s lead vocals like a ribbon of smoke. Piper’s big brother, percussionist Chase Johnson, treats the drum kit as another palette of musical colors. Daniel Pelletier underlines and emphasizes the whole heady and emotional tangle on the bass. In terms of sound, Chambers’ harmonies recall another Denton band, Seryn — and the influence is fair, not only because of Seryn’s acclaim in the local and regional indie folk scene but also because Valdez is friends with the members of the

band. In terms of mood and effects, Chambers shares some the damp, dour Brit-rock pavement Denton’s Sundress occupies so well. Chambers loves its echo effects a mite too well (and takes a page from Midlake’s new-age troubadour po-
etry) but the songs hold up thanks to Valdez and Johnson’s talent for composition. Valdez said Chambers got its start in earnest when he and Chase Johnson were walking around Deep Ellum after Index Fest last year. “We were playing for [Denton indie folk artist] Sam Robertson and Judson said, ‘Here’s an idea. What if Sam was part of this, too?’” Chase Johnson recalled. “I remember when we really decided to make it happen. It was at a show in January of 2013. Sam left — she was getting married — and we had to figure out where to go with this.” Shortly after Robertson left the group, Valdez said he and Chase Johnson played a set with Piper Johnson and another musician at the Live Oak Music Hall & See CHAMBERS on 10

Chambers Lounge in Fort Worth. “It was super well-received,” Valdez said. “We got a lot of really enthusiastic feedback. That was the second moment.” Piper Johnson said she was all in as soon as the band recruited her. “Really, for me, it was from the beginning that I knew I wanted to commit to it,” she said. “Chase and Judson were working and for me, going into it, I felt like this was something I really wanted to do.” Valdez is the songwriter-inchief at the moment, and said he likes playing around with a vocal loop machine to experiment with harmonies and to tinker with layers. Inner Room is rife with songs that have a sonic backbone, with harmonies and verses growing outward. “I think ‘In Your Blood’ is the best example of that,” Chase Johnson said. “The guitar’s the same from the beginning to the end, but everything else grows. Everyone else is layering over that.” Inner Room was almost finished when it was picked up by Kansas City label the Record Machine, which is distributing the band’s debut. “Record Machine was one of the first labels we talked to,” Valdez said. “We had a good conversation with [founder] Nathan [Reusch], and felt good about what they wanted to and how they wanted to work with us.” The Record Machine is an indie label established in 2003, and includes the James Dean Trio and Cowboy Indian Bear on its artist roster. Chase Johnson said Valdez’s raw material has become the band’s art and ethos. “It’s really the album the band made together,” he said. “I mean, I can’t go to Rubber Gloves [Rehearsal Studios in Denton] and play a show of Chambers music on my own. That’s not going to happen. We all contributed something that makes the record what it is. I can say that, for me, I wanted to make the drums as musical as what Judson is doing on the guitar and what Judson and Piper are doing vocally. I wanted to

make the drums the percussion section of the orchestra, you know?” Chambers has the same challenge that any band has after a successful debut: living up to early expectations and growing past them, should expectations turn into constraints. Dallas folk artist Sarah Jaffe, for example, who made her celebrated debut Suburban Nature while living and working in Denton, surprised more than a few fans when sophomore record The Body Wins left much of the girl-and-guitar earnestness in favor of a headier electronic sensibility. “I think, as a band, we don’t worry about what happens next,” Piper Johnson said. “Now, personally, I’m kind of anxious. I’m still in school. I’m asking myself things like, ‘Will I drop
out of school? Should I make the band my top priority? If I drop out, will it be worth it?’ So I’m anxious, personally, yeah. But as a band, do we worry about what comes after this? No. We just keep doing music.” Chase Johnson said his anxiety is probably impatience cloaked in antsy musings about how to make the most of a debut that has award nominators projecting Chambers as a contender. “My anxiety for being in Chambers stems from wanting this to happen sooner rather than later,” he said. “I want Coldplay to be opening for us. You know? I want to hurry up and make music for a living. That would be great. That’s what we all want, I think.” Valdez said Inner Room is a projection of the art to come. “I really think this album, for us, showed us what the band is going to sound like. Some of the music is true to the music I was working on when we got together. But everyone turned it into what this record is,” Valdez said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we do next.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
TRACK BY TRACK Chambers, “Inner Room” “Come Down, Please” — This gem appears at the end of Inner Room. A steady pluck of a single guitar string hints at the heightened heartbeat of a warring, estranged couple festering in separate rooms. Piper Johnson sings a lonely, aching introduction: “You won’t fight/So I won’t come down.” Judson Valdez answers: “I won’t bite/Why won’t you fight with me?” “I want to fight/I want to fight with you,” Johnson sings, joining Valdez as he sings, “I won’t bite, no I won’t bite.” The song isn’t typical verse-chorus-verse pop fare. It’s more of an idea that builds in volume (decibels and musical heft) as Valdez, Piper Johnson, Chase Johnson and Daniel Pelletier layer their sound onto the theme. And it’s utterly enchanting. “Make It So” — There’s a hint of Renaissance fair madrigal to this song. A simple harmony weights the lead line with a plodding drum and light strings and dramatic, marching keys. Chambers could easily ride the song into sappy hokum with a hammer dulcimer, a bodhran and mandolin. But this track keeps it between the lines, subtracting where they surely prefer to embellish. The track benefits from Valdez’s sure edits, and stays on point — this tune is a proverbial message in a bottle from one cracked, worn soul to another. “In Your Blood” — This dirge-y tune features a steady repeating guitar underscoring a chorus worthy of a Broadway musical drama, picking up midway with a contemporary drumbeat reminiscent of Midlake’s “Roscoe,” but more blunted. The band continues sorting through great big, timeless themes of seeking, betrayal and redemption. “Well, they say that the body’s a temple,” Valdez sings. “These pieces of rubble are all I have to offer up to your kin.” The song grows into a loud wail of “whoas” before slowing to a final few lines of guitar and this provocation by Valdez: “When I spit in your face there/Told you I’d be back/if you keep your arms lifted or fold them up and spit right back.” — Lucinda Breeding
