enton never misses Independence Day, and this year is no different. Between the city and the Denton Kiwanis Club, just about everyone can participate.
FOURTH OF JULY IN DENTON
Run for your freedom Or walk. This year marks the 14th annual Liberty Run, a 5K run and 1-mile fun walk. Participants can check in starting at 6:30 a.m. for the 7:30 a.m. race Wednesday. Register for $15 per person through Saturday online at http://bit.ly/MUuddb. Through 5 p.m. Monday, register for $15 per person — or $12 per person for families of three or more living at the same address — by calling 940-349-7275, or by visiting the customer service center at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Register on race day for $20 per person.
Show your colors Want to walk, ride a bicycle, push a stroller or pull a wagon in the Denton Yankee Doodle Parade? Get yourself and yours to the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot at 101 S. Locust St. at 8 a.m. on Independence Day, and come in red, white and blue. The parade will march around the Square and to Quakertown Park. Participants are invited to decorate their bikes, wagons,

strollers and even themselves. Hint: This is the time to bring that musical instrument so that you can toodle patriotic songs as you march. The parade starts at 9 a.m. sharp.
Make a day of it The annual Fourth of July Jubilee includes fun for all ages. At 10:45 a.m., teams can join the potato sack race; at 11 a.m., try out the three-legged races, followed by the egg-and-spoon races at 11:15 a.m., a whipped cream-eating contest at 11:30 a.m., and a water balloon toss at 11:45 a.m. Kids can also try out the gutter boat races.
Be there for the big bang This year is a milestone for the Denton Kiwanis Club. Wednesday marks the 40th
annual Kiwanis fireworks show. The evening features music by Denton/Gainesville band the Holler Time and, when night falls, a great big fireworks show. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. at the University of North Texas’ Fouts Field, and the music begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is free, but the Kiwanis deploy their friendly Bucket Brigade for cash donations, all of which benefit the Kiwanis Club Children’s Clinic, a network of doctors, dentists and pharmacies offering affordable and free medical, dental and prescription aid to local children. Don’t be late. Fouts Field nearly always fills available seats for the show before nightfall. For more information, visit www.dentonkiwanisclub.org.

Cat Snapp’s I Can’t Really Tell You About It, made of paper, ink and thread, is part of her exhibit at the Center for the Visual Arts
Spineless wonders Snapp’s artist books suggest big stories
D
enton artist Cat Snapp uses careful details to suggest a splendid messiness in “Small Breaths,” an exhibit of her recent works, at the Center for the Visual Arts. Artist books seem to take pride in the liberties they take with the very notion of a book. For the inveterate reader, a book is an organized collection of paper (can’t they please bottle that smell?), glue, thread and binding board. For book buffs, it’s a stretch to even compare the data on an e-reader to a book. Artist books use traditional bookmaking materials: paper, boards, binding, ink and text. Good book artists, who can turn this functional craft into a decorative object, put all that into a blender. So Snapp’s paper — cut in pell-mell, jigsaw chunks and printed with neat graphics — is ever so orderly even as it defies sequence, chronology and plot. That stuff is the
work of a reader — well, the viewer. Snapp uses smartly dyed fabrics to cover boxes. Once opened, they reveal stiff, clean paper — the thrill of a new story! — with fussy lines stitched in teensy tracks. Color goes where it will (though Snapp probably works all that out, too), and textures lurk and show off at the same time. Make what you will of the meaning behind the exhibit’s title. Small breaths can mean fear, exertion or delicious and fleeting moments where life happens at its most fearless and fevered. A lot can happen in small breaths — children are born and people die in the space of one flex of the lungs. Snapp simply puts all these ideas into a context that invites the viewer to think, feel and carry on with the themes that are intentionally threaded and gathered in her artist books. — Lucinda Breeding

. Smiley isn’t one to let his heels get dusty — for this Denton hip-hop artist, the verses are hottest when the artist is in motion, booking gigs and charming audiences like a snake in a basket. D. Smiley fits a set into the Friday night gig at Hailey’s Club with beefy beats and tight rhymes. The artist has a little in common with Devin
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
the Dude. He likes herb and loves the ladies. Fortunately for listeners, D. Smiley doesn’t rap stupid or juvenile when the air is — how should we say this? — thick. There is that relaxed, lub-dub of a beat nudging the artist through his verses and choruses. The local artist performs on a busy bill this weekend, but he doesn’t hustle party tracks. Smiley writes about the grind of writing, the persistence of conflict among the hip-hop community (and the world in
general). Push D. Smiley past the point of no return, and he’ll sort you out with his flow, not his fists. OPENING TUESDAY The Amazing Spider-Man A briefcase containing clues sets the young Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) on the trail of his parents — or at least the answers about their disappearance. Peter also grapples with the trials of romance. His high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), seems receptive
to Peter’s affections — but Peter’s secret identity piques the dogged interest of Gwen’s law enforcement pop. Marc Webb directs this feast for the eyes. Buildings collapse, a bridge and all the cars on it are swept up in a fire, and Spider-Man bobs and weaves his way through the metropolis on the sticky filigrees of his magic webs. NOW PLAYING Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter After watching a vampire dispatch his mother, Abe Lincoln grows up and commits to ridding the New World of the fanged vermin who are fighting for control of the colonies. Much butt-kicking, biting and blood spattering ensues. Benjamin Walker (Kinsey) plays the put-upon president who has to sling an ax against vampires while trying to preserve the Union. Meet Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), an expert archer known for her defiance and her explosion of screaming red curls. Neither pleases her father, King Fergus (voiced by the incomparable Billy Connolly), or her mum, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). While the queen is looking to land a good young man for her daughter, Merida is looking for a spell that will change her destiny. Rated PG, 93 minutes. — L.B. Men in Black 3 (###) Josh Brolin impersonating the young Tommy Lee Jones is worth the price of admission to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling, deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan in this sentimental sequel to the scifi comedies about secret agents in black suits who save the world from aliens. An alien serial killer (Jemaine Clement) has traveled back in time to save the arm that Agent K shot off in 1969, and Agent J (Will Smith) must go back and save his future partner.

Thin Line entry ‘Bill W.’ screens in Oak Cliff
06 28 12
If you know the Serenity Prayer, you have Bill W. — Bill Wilson, founder of Alcoholics Anonymous and, perhaps, inspiration to all the 12-step programs that followed — to thank for it. The documentary Bill W., by firstWilson time filmmakers Kevin Hanlon and Dan Carracino, explores the man who has helped countless addicts overcome their demons — and keep them at bay — since 1935. The documentary screened in Denton during Thin Line Film Fest last February, and now, the historic Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff in Dallas is screening the documentary at 6:30 p.m. today. Bill W. makes no bones about AA’s founding father’s reliance on God to stick to the 12 steps to sobriety. The directors use an exhaustive amount of archival material in the movie, but present-day AA adherents drive home Wilson’s essential message: A person alone is powerless to overcome addiction and to stay clean. They need something beyond themselves and a community of recovering addicts. The theater is located at 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. To purchase tickets, visit http://thetexas theatre.com. Tickets cost $9.25 for adults, and $8 for children, Texas Theatre members and senior citizens. The film is not rated, 104 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding That leaves an awful lot of this movie in Smith’s usually capable hands. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Moonrise Kingdom (##) In the latest piece of whimsy from director Wes Anderson, two children become lost on an isolated island in 1965. eople Like Us covers its bases. The new drama-comedy-character study wants to hit so many buttons, it simply hits them all. Somehow, People Like Us eventually breaks down defenses and becomes a touching portrait of a fractured modern family struggling to find its roots. But tone and rhythm fluctuate from scene to scene and even within scenes. Plus, the film never establishes what exactly its aims are. And it suffers from far too many maudlin and mawkish sequences,

spotty cinematography and some choppy, flip-flop editing. Yet despite its many deficiencies, the film’s greatest drawback, and the biggest hindrance to its authenticity, is the implausibility of the central character’s narrative-driving action. Chris Pine plays slick, fast-talking Sam. fully answered. Obviously, Frankie believes Sam has romantic intentions, and it certainly seems that way. As a result, an outsider might be left wondering what Sam’s procrastinations accomplish other than giving director and co-writer Alex Kurtzman’s semiautobiographical screenplay time to render a series of mildly amusing, character-defining scenes. The film’s greatest strengths lie in its humor and its ingratiating bonhomie. In addition, Sam, Frankie and Josh are all likable characters, even if the actors must work overtime to apply their skills to the inconsistent material. Yet the continuous contrivances make it difficult to embrace the film’s inevitable resolution. So, just enjoy the movie, but ignore its drawbacks.

As for the swinging and occasionally sentimental sound that packed 1940s dance halls, Lewis kept it very much intact. The cast includes Denton favorite Jennifer Calfee, who makes her fifth appearance in the company’s summer fundraisers, and several newcomers to the Denton stage — Pam Leck, Dave Parsons and Denton native Bruce McKinley. Bryan Patrick, a core member of Fight Boy Theatre, takes another turn on the Campus stage as the stage manager coordinating the rehearsal and performance of the 1940s USO show. The cast members said they knew they accepted a challenging musical assignment when each accepted the invitation to perform. “Unless you listen to a lot of jazz in your free time, this music takes some getting used to,” said McKinley, whose father led an a cappella choir at the University of North Texas. “You have to listen. The harmonies aren’t easy. Sometimes, it’s good to stand in a semicircle and sing so you can really listen.” Leck said the dissonant har-

monies that prevailed during the age of vocal groups — like the Andrews Sisters, whose standards are in the show — can confound. Calfee agreed. “This is going to sound counterintuitive, but sometimes, not listening is good,” she said. “There are moments when you just need to hear what you’re supposed to be singing in your head and block everyone else
out.” Theresa Buntain gave the cast some license to develop characters the audience will recognize. “The script calls for Man 1, Man 2 and Woman 1 and Woman 2,” she said. “What’s neat is that all of them chose a grandparent’s name for their characters.” Lewis’ script is about four former military officers who have gone on to become
Hollywood royalty. They plan the USO show for outbound soldiers. While the songs aren’t original, they are threaded through the story as emotional markers. There’s the excitement of shipping out for the first voyage, the disillusionment of being the lowest in the ranks. There are sporting riffs on the mischief that is inevitable when young men train, dine and bunk together.
The grief of being away from loved ones — whether sung from the perspective of the soldier or the sweetheart at home — comes up again and again as lyrics paint pictures of loved ones together again, gazing at the moon. “Back then, there was no Internet, no e-mail, no Skype,” said Leck. “When you think about it, back then, when you looked up at the moon, you knew you were under the same moon as that soldier — whether they were in Belgium or Switzerland.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
