Gardening can offer physical and mental health benefits It's no wonder gardening is growing in popularity, as it offers a wealth of physical and mental health benefits. Indeed, gardening is on the upswing, as more than 2 million households were added to the ranks of Americans partaking in the pursuit, versus the prior year, according to the recently released 2013 National Gardening Survey from the National Gardening Association. Here are some of the many ways gardening can potentially improve your health: Harvest One of those most important benefits of gardening is the harvest itself. Consider incorporating vegetables into your gardening repertoire. The food you grow will taste way better than the store bought variety. And since you can pick your tomatoes, carrots, squash and herbs when they are actually ripe, they will contain more nutrients as well. Since you can regulate the way you grow your own vegetables, consider skipping the pesticides and opt for natural alternatives instead. Exercise If you hate the treadmill, don't fret. You can burn upwards of 150 calories by gardening for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regular physical activity can help you regulate weight and reduce your risk for such diseases as diabetes and heart disease. Just be sure to take some safety precautions so you don't stress your back. New ergonomic tools can help support safer

gardening. For example, the EZ Leaf Hauler, functions like a giant dust pan for leaves, so you can rake leaves directly into it before transport. With built-in handles, hauling is quick and easy on your back. Already using a tarp to drag your haul? Make it simple by clipping EZ Tarp Tugger handles to it. More information can be found at www.E-
Zlawnandgarden.com. Go Green Don't just take your own health into consideration -think of the health of the planet, too. When hauling mulch, leaves, weeds and yard debris, skip the gas-guzzling leaf blower and opt for manual options. Reduce the waste you create while gardening by packing
more leaves into bags. Breaking them down first can help you bag them more efficiently and ultimately use fewer bags. An easy way to get the job done is with a tool like the EZ Leaf Stomper that packs about four times as many leaves per bag as traditional bagging. And remember to compost your kitchen waste to reduce

your landfill contribution and improve your soil. Gardening is a great and healthy way to spend an afternoon, but remember that when you're out in the sun to take breaks often, hydrate frequently and wear sunscreen. Also, consider tools that can help you prevent overuse injuries. -StatePoint

Five quick fixes for big improvements around your home
7 Real Estate

When it comes to home improvement, you don’t need to do a complete overhaul to make a big impact. A “less is more” approach may serve you better, say experts. “Sometimes quick fixes are the ones you need most,” says Lou Manfredini, host of “HouseSmarts TV” and home improvement contributor on NBC’s “The Today Show.” According to Manfredini, there are five small projects you can do yourself that can make a huge difference in your home: • Clean the Disposal: Your kitchen sink and disposal work hard, but sometimes they can stink. Every few months, eliminate odor and freshen things up by pouring half a cup of general purpose disinfectant cleaner
down the drain. Using a small nylon pipe cleaning brush or clean toilet brush, reach in between the sink drain assembly and scrub the sidewalls of the pipe below it, paying special attention to the underside of the rubber flap on the disposal. • Patch in a Snap: Unsightly holes in walls can ruin the look of a room. Luckily, patching those holes doesn’t have to be time-intensive. For holes smaller than a dime, apply wall spackle with a putty knife. For larger holes, you may need to use a self-stick metal patch to cover it, and then apply spackle to smooth it out. “Achieving professional looking results quickly and onbudget requires the right prod-
ucts,” says Manfredini. Use a high-quality wall patch like 3M Patch plus primer spackle and primer in one, now available in a kit for holes up to three inches wide. It applies smoothly and has a built in primer, so once the wall is dry and sanded, you can paint immediately, cutting the repair
time in half. More information can be found at www.3MDIY.com/patch. • Peace and Quiet: Plagued by squeaky wood flooring? Try pouring baby powder over the noisy area. Then, wrap a block of wood in a dish rag and tap the boards down with a hammer to drive the powder between the tongue and groove of the flooring and tighten the nails holding it in place. “It may not work in all instances but I’ve had great success with this process,” says Manfredini. • Accent with Paint: To update a room without investing much time or money, paint one wall an accent color. Half of all paint sold in the US is white, so why not add bold color to your
home like blue, red or even tangerine? Prep by lightly sanding the entire surface. Patch any holes and then paint using a paint and primer in one. Two coats will give you the depth of color you want and should take only an afternoon. • Light it up: To save money and help the environment, switch to LED light bulbs. With all the improvements in color, they can now mimic the warm lighting associated with incandescent bulbs, using two-thirds less electricity. You don’t have to spend lots of time or money to spruce up your home this spring. Small projects can go a long way towards make it look great. -StatePoint

Quick, easy ways to add curb appeal to your home Looking to add curb appeal to your home and improve your outdoor living spaces? A complete overhaul of your home’s exterior or an addition can be costly and time-consuming. However simpler answers can achieve the desired affect: Beautify There are few ways to add curb appeal to a home more quickly and effectively than by simply adding awnings to its exterior. Awning fabrics come in hundreds of fade-resistant solid and stripe patterns that can complement any siding, brick, or stucco exterior -- making them a versatile option for both functionality and beauty. By selecting neutral colors and awning frames with simple clean lines, an awning can add a contemporary look. For more traditional homes, consider a complementary color or pattern to add life and visual interest to your exterior. Add Shade Shade can help you substantially save on cooling costs. Trees
and shrubbery can both beautify your home and add natural shade, but since there are times you may prefer more sunlight, consider customizing your control of shade and light with awnings. Fabric awnings or exterior shades can save homeowners as much as $200 annually by reducing the load on air conditioners, according to a study by the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA). “If you’re adding awnings to your home, stick with a reputable, licensed firm to ensure the best quality product and service,” says Greg Schmieler, Chairman of PAMA. More tips and free information about adding awnings to your home can be found at www.AwningInfo.com. Extend Living Spaces In the backyard, consider adding visual interest and improving your outdoor living space with a retractable or fixed frame canopy and some great patio furniture. There are so many styles available that color

coordinating these elements is easy. These trimmings can extend the time you can enjoy the outdoors by providing cooling shade and visual comfort on the
hottest and brightest days, and shelter and protection on cooler and rainy days. Updating your deck, patio or yard is a much more affordable option than a home addition.

Family-friendly carpet and tile that work for your home Your home’s flooring matters. Not only can it affect property value, but it’s also a fundamental element of design and style. With so many choices available, it can be difficult choosing what’s right for your family and home. Here are some guidelines that can help you make smart decisions that meet your budget and lifestyle. Choosing Tile “Tiling your home can be a great home improvement to easily add value,” says Keesha Hargis, a home décor specialist. Easy to maintain, tile flooring tends to be very resistant to moisture, fading and scratches. Tile allows you to create a variety of looks in your home from Tuscan to modern with the use of stone, such as slate, travertine, marble, concrete and linen. Natural stone floors are beautiful and elegant, but they are not always ideal for families. However, today’s engineered products are changing that. For
example, PurSTONE, a pre-engineered tile flooring available through Flooring America, can be installed quickly with or without grout on any level of a home. Unlike natural stone that needs to be stained and maintained, this alternative can look better longer with minimal mainte-
nance. Choosing Carpet There is a vast selection of styles, colors, and fibers to choose from in today’s marketplace, but a simple checklist can help. “The activity level of the home should be considered
first,” says Hargis. “For example, a traditional, patterned wool carpet may not be the right choice for a busy family with toddlers and pets.” Nylon fibers will hold up well to foot traffic, but may not offer the stain resistance a well-used room may need. Carpets manu-
factured in today’s polyester and polypropylene fibers resist staining and can be found in vibrant colors and sharp multi-toned patterns, but may not last through years of heavy wear. Newer fibers, however, are allowing for softness and durability to co-exist. For example, the Innovia Touch Collection has built-in stain and soil protection. Backed by a 20-year warranty, it can offer the resilience a carpet in a well-used room needs. Some homeowners may want professional help in making their decisions. Think about consulting a qualified flooring specialist. Design tips, home improvement advice and information about innovations in flooring are available at www.FlooringAmerica.com. Flooring is a long-term investment, so consider factors like maintenance and usage before making a final decision. -StatePoint

Some home improvements can improve your health
13 Real Estate
06 4 14
Small changes to your surroundings can have a strong impact on mood and overall health, say experts. A relatively new movement in design and construction, called “designing for health,” aims to make homes and communities have positive impacts on the way people live, work and play. “Encouraging movement, social interaction and physical health can address problems like obesity and our increasingly sedentary lifestyles. Thoughtful design and home improvements can solve these issues,” says Cyril Stewart, President at Cyril Stewart, LLC and member of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Design and Health Leadership Group.
Spaces that promote movement -- walkable and livable communities -- are an idea gaining steam, as noted by the AIA’s most recent Home Design Trends Survey. Increasingly, designers and developers are creating pedestrian-friendly communities with access to recreational activities. Want to foster healthy, active spaces in your own home and community? Stewart is offering a few tips: Extend the Home Adding porches, patios or balconies improves access to the outside world. This provides great health benefits, ranging from maximizing natural light to extending living spaces. “Many people retrofit homes
with these amenities, to allow for more space and fresh air and improve ventilation,” says Stewart. Add Strategic Seating Strategic seating is another interesting trend design professionals are employing to encourage movement in and around a home or community. For example, public seating in the middle of spaces that mix residential, dining and entertainment establishments ensure people need to get up and walk to those services before enjoying them. In other communities, areas designated for more quiet activities, like reading, are on the rise. Sleep-Friendly Bedrooms Ensure your bedroom pro-
motes healthy sleep by making it a tranquil place. If possible, avoid sleeping in a room that is along a busy street. Install soundproof windows and use drapes. And leave the entertainment center out of your bedroom. It’s hard to get quality sleep alongside the lights and sound of the television. Breathe Quality Air An easy, but often overlooked solution for ensuring better health, is keeping air quality high. Fresh air aids sleep and lessens the occurrence of diseases like asthma. Simple ways to improve air quality include: • Finding the optimum setup to promote fresh air flow and ventilation in a building • Regularly replacing and
cleaning filters on air conditioners and heating systems • Confirming radon and carbon monoxide detectors are present and in working order These are just a few examples of how design can affect health. For help implementing these ideas or to find recommendations for your home or community, an architect can help you decide what would work best. To find an architect in your area, visit http://ArchitectFinder.aia.org. When it comes to home upgrades and interior decorating decisions, you can make your health a top consideration alongside visual appeal and functionality. -StatePoint

Help Dad perfect his grill skills this season 15 The seasoned griller commands an arsenal of experience and recipes, all having been painstakingly passed through the generations and perfected over time and temperature. The origin of these tasty traditions usually can be found in family, and the one often deserving the credit is dear old Dad. Southern grilling guru Fred Thompson, author of the new book “Williams-Sonoma Grill Master” a collection of back-tobasics tips and recipes, recalls the influence of his father as early as nine years old. “Every Saturday night my father grilled rib-eye steaks. I wanted to keep up with daddy so I hung out at the grill,” he says. “I was fascinated with what my father could do.” This Father’s Day and BBQ season, try honoring the Old Man with delicious tradition. So light that fire! Take a page out of Thompson’s book and learn the secrets to grilling the perfect steak:
• Buy good meat: Grass-fed and grass-finished beef tastes better and has a bolder flavor that holds up particularly well against the lick of the grill’s flames. • Simple seasoning: Sprinkle steak liberally on both sides with salt and pepper when you take it out of the refrigerator. Brush steaks on both sides with a little olive oil (not extra virgin). This facilitates the heat transfer, so you can get an evenly browned crust and a delicious steak house flavor. • Timing is important: There’s nothing worse than a rubbery, tasteless overcooked steak. Professionals use touch to gauge doneness, and so can you. Touch your index finger to your cheek. When the meat feels this way, the steak is rare. Touch the tip of your nose. That firmness equates to medium. Your forehead is well done. “But please don’t go there,” says Thompson. • Let it rest: If you cut into a
piece of beef as soon as it comes off the grill, you will lose precious juices. Give the proteins in the steak the opportunity to unwind a little bit from the heat they have just experienced. Let most steaks rest at least five to 10 minutes to give the juices time to redistribute evenly throughout the meat. • Goes great with: Skip the steak sauce. A pat of plain or compound butter is the perfect finish. Even experienced grillers need new tips, tools and tricks to perfect their steaks, ribs and dry rub techniques. Consider gifting dad a successful grilling season with “Grill Master.” Grill tips, BBQ recipes and information about the book can be found at www.WeldonOwen.com. “There’s a mystique that happens with smoke and flame that you just can’t get any way else, and it’s pretty simple to create,” says Thompson. -StatePoint

Stop mosquito breeding with proper yard drainage As you enjoy time outdoors, it’s important to remember that warmer weather means prime mosquito breeding season in outdoor areas around your home and yard. With the risk for mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus (WNV), families are being urged to take preventative steps to protect themselves, such as by using mosquito repellant and regularly emptying standing water in flower pots, gutters and other areas of their landscape. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. “Many homeowners may not realize that standing water and puddles in their yard can play a large role in attracting mosquitos. By being proactive, not only can you prevent costly issues that may be harmful to your health, but you can also keep your landscape a sanctuary that can be fully enjoyed,” says Ryan Larsen, a civil engineer with NDS, Inc, a nationwide leader in
landscape drainage solutions. Known as “Dr. Drainage” at NDS, Larsen is offering timely tips to help address larger issues that result from standing water: Low Spots Because every landscape has different needs, homeowners can better prevent drainage issues by first becoming familiar with the topography of their yard, identifying low spots, downspouts and other structures that may inhibit water flow, like retaining walls, edging, even walkways and patios. Low spots can easily turn into “water reservoirs” and cause serious drainage problems. Once the low area becomes saturated with water, a muddy puddle begins to form, potentially attracting mosquitoes and other insects. The unsightly muddy area not only detracts from the surrounding landscape, causing grass to die, but can also evolve into more serious property damage that comes with a costly repair price and potential health issues.
Redirect Excess Water A proper drainage system typically includes a catch basin, helping to facilitate the collection, conduction and discharge of excess water on your property. “By capturing excess water and transporting it away from low spots, catch basins are a very effective solution for homeowners,” says Larsen. “Depending on the terrain of your landscape, and with a little guidance,
a drainage system can be installed over a weekend.” DIY Tips For free resources, easy to follow instructional videos, product recommendations, installation instructions and links to local outlets where you can find the products that you need, visit www.ndspro.com. Installation videos highlight often overlooked steps, such as placing stone under the installed catch
basin and drilling holes in the bottom of the basin so water can gradually leech back into the soil. To contact “Dr. Drainage” directly email him at drdrainage@ndspro.com. Mosquitos aren’t just a nuisance; they can be a health hazard. This season, be proactive. Reduce standing water on your property and protect your family. -StatePoint

What to know when redoing your home’s flooring
19 Real Estate
06 4 14
Whether you’re purchasing a home or remodeling your current one, floors are perhaps the biggest piece of your home investment puzzle. They’re also the literal base from which all other design choices are made. You may think you know exactly what you’re looking for, but innovations in home flooring have expanded and improved options. Before making a major home improvement decision, do your research. Carpeting Carpets are cozy, but can be difficult to maintain if used in areas subject to stains and moisture. If you have pets or children, consider avoiding carpet entirely. If you do carpet your home, use dark colors to create a cozier feel and lighter colors to make spaces feel larger. Planning ahead? Strong, bold colors may limit your future options when repainting walls or changing
furniture. Engineered Flooring Wood-based engineered flooring has come a long way from its mid-1990s introduction to the United States. As recently as five years ago, faux wood flooring looked just that -- fake. Now they’ve actually become a preferred look for many homeowners, thanks to design improvements. “Today’s engineered floors have the beauty and durability of solid wood, and are available in every color and style you can walk upon,” says Tom Wood, president of Atlanta-based franchisor Floor Coverings International. “For the budget-conscious, they can provide a solid long-term investment and resale value.” Engineered flooring is comprised of wood layers stacked cross-grain and bonded together under heat and pressure. This process makes them stain resistant and more durable where pets’ claws and children’s toys
are concerned. Additionally, they’re built to resist humidity
and can be installed on any level of your home -- even a basement. “There is also a big ecofriendly aspect to newly engineered floors. Wood veneer uses far less wood than solid hardwood floors,” says Sandy Stratton, the franchisee for Floor Coverings International servicing the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. Stratton has a background in architectural engineering and interior design. Eco-friendly options on the market include laminate made from recycled wood fiber, bamboo, cork, natural linoleum, sisal fiber area rugs, seagrass and coir mats (made from coconut husks) -- along with stones, tiles, carpeting and natural wood. Hardwood Regular sweeping is generally all that’s needed to keep hardwood flooring looking great in the short-term. However, periodic refinishing and repairing may be required. Additionally, footsteps
and ambient echoes can cause rooms with hardwood flooring to be noisy. In general, wood flooring is not recommended for rooms subject to moisture exposure. If you do plan to use hardwood, consider sustainable options. For example, Floor Coverings International offers hardwood flooring that’s certified by the non-profit Cradle-to-Cradle Silver, is eligible for green building Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design credits, and meets Greenguard Environmental Institute’s indoor air quality requirements. More information about flooring options can be found at www.FloorCoveringsInternational.com. Floors are a foundation and a focal point in every room. From hardwood and tile to durable engineered wood floors to luxury vinyl planks, there is a beautiful and sturdy floor out there for every home. -StatePoint
