Savannah Elementary students work to clean up community The view from one of his home’s windows gives Ethan Farwell a perfect scene of what should be a picturesque area around a pond a few feet from his house. Instead of a thriving ecosystem and place where children and parents of the community want to fish and play, Ethan and his friend Carson Casper saw decayed fish, dead turtles and trash littered around the pond’s shores and in the water. The fifth-grade students at Savannah Elementary didn’t like what they saw, so they began to clean it up. Ethan and Carson picked up what they could, but decided they needed help if the pond and other common areas of the neighborhood were going to look as clean as they could. They wrote the Savannah Home Owners Association and asked if the group would help them keep these areas clean. “It wasn’t supposed to be a complaint,” said Ethan of the letter. “It was just a simple thing of us asking them to come and help. We did what we could, but we’re just two fifth-graders living in a large neighborhood, so we can’t do this by ourselves.” The Savannah Home Owners Association agreed and recently singled out the students at the group’s annual meeting. Ethan and Carson were given plaques and plenty of pats on the back. More importantly, they were given the funds to start a new student group
to help the HOA combat the problem of littering around the neighborhood’s common areas. Carson and Ethan’s group, dubbed the Savannah Eco-Warriors, will now work with the HOA’s sports and recreation committee in planning community clean-up events and encouraging residents to recycle and reuse paper, plastic and glass products, while also not littering during public events. The EcoWarriors are getting their own budget to recruit others to help with their cause. “We’ve talked to our friends and told them we’re gonna get t-shirts for when we pick up trash and have a pizza party at the community clubhouse once we’re done,” Carson said. The duo has plans to repurpose old wood and make bird feeders for the neighborhood parks, make “catch and release” signs for use at the ponds, recruit families – not just students – to pick up trash and have flyers throughout the school and neighborhood reminding people to not litter. “I’m excited to see everyone in the community join us. It took a long time for everyone to notice how dirty some of this stuff was, now hopefully we won’t let it get that way again,” Ethan said. Although the two will be middle school students next year, Carson said they plan on making sure the Eco-Warriors keep a strong
Savannah Elementary fifth graders Ethan Farwell (left) and Carson Casper were recently honored by the Savannah Home Owners Association for their efforts in making citizens of the neighborhood aware of littering and unsanitary conditions in common areas. The duo’s group, Savannah EcoWarriors, is now recruiting students from the school to join the HOA in making the neighborhood a cleaner and more eco-friendly environment for its residents and native wildlife. presence at Savannah Elementary. “Oh yeah, we’re gonna keep doing this, keeping making this fun and keep telling
people about it,” said Carson. “Writing that letter turned out a lot better than I thought, so there’s no way we’re stopping now.”

Denton ISD Update District implementing new online enrollment process Shelly McNabb remembers what it was like trying to register her two boys for elementary school when she first moved to Denton a few years ago. Like most Denton ISD parents, she learned that the process involved waiting in a long line to pick up a lot of forms, filling out those forms and then turning in those forms. In an effort to help Mrs. McNabb – and the rest of the families of Denton ISD’s more than 27,500 students – save time and stress with the student registration process, the district will roll out a new online student enrollment system this summer. Infosnap, Denton ISD’s new system, will allow parents with students already enrolled in schools throughout the district to complete the student registration process from home, work, public library or anywhere they can connect to the internet. The online process will help replace all the hard copy registration and permission forms that parents were used to filling out at the schools, and reduce the long lines in the process. “I think that this process will help with the efficiency of registration,” said Chris Rangel, principal at Stephens Elementary. “It will allow for more flexibility with registration times, and be in much more convenient format for those with multiple students. I think that parents are going to appreciate Denton ISD making this shift.” Current Denton ISD families will receive an email from infosnap sometime in mid-July reminding them that it is time to complete the online registration form. The email will contain a secure “snapcode” that guards each student’s information and include directions on accessing a link to input that code to complete the enrollment process. The form will already be filled with some of the student’s information (name, address, etc.) and have easy-to-read portions to complete important registration data like student health information
Infosnap, Denton ISD’s new online student registration system, will get rid of long lines and myriads of paper forms, allowing families already enrolled at a district campus the ability to complete their student’s registration at their own pace from a computer or internet-enable device.

and emergency contacts as well as links to applications for transportation and free/reduced lunch. Current families will also be able to view and complete district and state documents, in a simplified format, that are needed to finalize the enrollment process. In addition, families with multiple students in the district will have the option to copy all generic family information from one student to the next.
“We understand how valuable even a few minutes can be for every family today, which is why infosnap will be a valuable tool for our parents,” said Vicki Sargent, executive director of elementary academic programs. “Having the ability to complete the enrollment process at home or when you’re not pressed for time is something we believe they’ll appreciate.” Current parents will complete the entire registration process
online and finalize their student’s enrollment by submitting proof of residency (utility bill, lease agreement, new home contract) with valid identification at their child’s school after Monday, Aug. 5, during normal school hours. Every Denton ISD family with an up-to-date email address will receive information regarding the online enrollment process through infosnap prior to receiving their “snapcode” email. All families
should make sure they have a current email address on file with their student’s campus front office to ensure they receive this information. Mrs. McNabb said she’s looking forward to the simplified process. “I don’t want to stand in line at a school waiting to fill out registration forms if I don’t have to,” said the W.S. Ryan Elementary mom. “If this keeps us from having to do that I’m sure it will be great.”
