Lunchbox Bites

6 Pick smart snacks Cheese Lovers Pizza Squares you think and regain focus, so be smart with your choices. Bringing fresh fruit like a banana or an apple has plenty of nutrients and minerals children need to think clearly and grow. Other smart choices that have protein, dairy or grains include: popcorn, whole grain crackers, yogurt, cheese sticks or even a peanut butter sandwich. Remember that making wise decisions shows your parents that you are becoming more responsible, so be smart when picking your snacks away from home too. When you’re at home for the summer pick pretzels or baked chips over regular chips for a snack and choose juice or milk over a soda when you need a drink. Junk food may taste good initially, but it won’t make you feel good over the long run and it rarely has anything healthy benefits. Show your parents and friends that being smart means snacking smart, and you know that healthy snacks will give you instant energy, help you grow and be healthy now, and in the future. - Jonita Widmer, Director of Health Services/Denton ISD

Do you get hungry during class? Or is your stomach growling right before the final bell rings to let school out? School starts at 7:50 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m. for all Denton ISD students, and that’s not even factoring in before- or afterschool activities. Snacks are important to keep your energy up and keep you focused in the classroom. Every school has different lunch schedules, so some grades might be eating at 10:45 a.m. while other students may not be getting to lunch until close to 1 p.m. To help students deal with these long stretches without food, many teachers allow students to have snacks in class. But just because it’s snack time, doesn’t mean it’s junk food time. In fact, junk food won’t do much to get your energy levels going. Sure, the initial sugar rush of snack cakes, cookies or candy may give you a jolt, but once your blood sugar comes crashing down, you’ll probably feel worse than you did when you were hungry. Snack time is designed to help

EXPO students

EXPO students blend Japanese culture with recycling Leena Stiggers worked with Japanese middle school students while working on her bachelor’s degree. She learned as much from them as they did from her during their time together, so she instantly felt a connection with Japan, its history and its culture. Now, more than a decade later, she’s passing that interest – among others – to her EXPO students at Providence and Cross Oaks Elementary. EXPO, a program tailored for the district’s gifted and talented students, allows students to pursue academic topics covered outside the normal classroom. One of these topics recently blended Japanese history and culture with an ecologically friendly concept and required EXPO students to create an item of Japanese clothing by using recyclable materials. “This being EXPO, we didn’t just want to do the ordinary, so we pushed our boundaries,” said Mrs. Stiggers. And that landed the students at the city landfill. The EXPO students at Providence and Cross Oaks collected items that would normally be thrown away from the City of Denton landfill as well as their own homes and created one-of-akind garments that represented Japanese culture as well as their own creativity. That creativity was then shown off at the self proclaimed “Trash ‘N Fashion Show” at each of their schools. The two elementary schools also joined other members of the community in participating in a citywide “Trashy Fashion Show” at the North Branch Library in Denton.

That event, which was held in celebration of Earth Day, drew hundreds of attendees and provided a welcome outlet for the students to showcase their work. Normal trash-can ready items like Chick-fil-A bags, recycled grocery bags, thrown away nylon tablecloths and gently used trash bags became traditional kimonos, Samurai warrior clothes, sumo wrestling attire, and typical Japanese women’s clothing. It also allowed the students to do individual research on their Japanese EXPO unit, while learning the meaning of terms like green, recyclable and eco-friendly. “I learned that by being creative, you can do anything. I mean, if we had good materials and the right sewing tools, I bet we could’ve made real clothing from recyclable materials,” said Caleb Wertz, a fifth-grade student at Cross Oaks. Mrs. Stiggers said she enjoys seeing the students in her EXPO classes use their minds to analyze and solve problems that they normally would not encounter. The curriculum gives the teachers flexibility to introduce everything from Japanese culture to stock market analysis to robotics and the stu-

dents, in turn, get to be more creative and have fun while learning new things, she said. More than 60 students at Providence and Cross Oaks participated in their campus’ “Trash ‘N Fashion Show.” Since each of the students had to research their items, Mrs. Stiggers estimates that each of them came away with a new understanding of history, art, culture, economics and environmentalism. Celeste Kalbach agreed. The Cross Oaks fourth-grader said she learned about Chick-fil-A’s recent expansion into Japan, the impact the company is having on Japanese culture and about the company’s eco-friendly practices. But was it her favorite part of EXPO class this year? “No, I like EXPO all the time. I can get my mind off of everything else going on in class and focus on something that really interests and is more challenging to me,” said Celeste.
