Smooth sounds to close down Twilight Tunes T

wilight Tunes wraps up for the summer today with smooth sounds.

Lisa Markley and the Ne’erDo-Wells are a Dallas outfit with Denton ties. Markley, a music teacher from Dallas, has played with Denton’s Paul Slavens and Jeffrey Barnes, both of them in the Ne’er-DoWells. She’s also played with Le Not So Hot Klub Du Denton, in addition to keeping up a regular musical partnership with Bruce Balmer and occasionally with the Malvinas.

She earned a degree in composition at the University of North Texas, played trombone in the jazz studies program’s lab bands and sang with the UNT Jazz Singers.

Markley and the Ne’er-DoWells specialize in jazz, folk and covers of 1970s and ’80s rock.

Markley’s smooth, unaffected alto is set against smart arrangements that should satisfy hard-core jazz fans, and should Markley grace the audience on

the courthouse lawn with “House of the Rising Sun,” rock fans won’t feel cheated.

The Denton Community Market will offer a taste of its usual Saturday offerings with food and produce vendors on the Square tonight, along with local artists and their wares.

Keyboard-playing singersongwriter Anna Haas will kick off the music at 6 p.m., followed

by Markley’s set at 6:30 p.m.

Haas is part of Fresh Traveler, a team of judges evaluating Denton for Rand McNally and USA Today’s Best of the Road competition.

Twilight Tunes is a tradition in Denton — a free date with music on the downtown Square on Thursday evenings in May and June.

A bounce house will be set up for children, and locals are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the Square and nosh on dinners bought around the Square.

he University of North Texas’ downtown arts and meeting space, UNT on the Square, is offering a free evening of experimental music tonight.

The evening begins with Martin Back at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Dream Team, a three-piece ensemble, at 8:30 p.m.

Back, a composer, artist and musician, is pursuing a master’s degree of fine arts in new media at UNT. According to the UNT on the Square website, his recent performances have included “improvised short-circuiting of cassette players by touching the exposed electronics, and droning feedback loops through amplified, homemade monochords.”

Katy Perry: Part of Me is not a concert film (although there is ample performance footage).

It is not a chronicle of this Candy Land Gaga’s life (although you do learn a great deal about her pre-fame years).

Part of Me is Perry’s visually spectacular testimonial to her own indomitable determination to follow her dreams. The fact that the film lends itself to some really colorful Pinterest pages is merely a bonus.

The image that will stick with you is of Perry, setting the spangled pinwheels on her chest spinning, striking a pose, holding up her sparkly microphone and smiling to beat the

bandwagon as the elevator platform raises her up to stagelevel to face her adoring fans.

It’s how Perry began every stop on her yearlong globegirdling California Dreams Tour, just before breaking into her first song “Teenage Dream.”

Because we have already seen all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing a super splashy arena tour like this (seven tour buses! 16 trucks!), we’re continually stoked by the plucky professionalism of Katy’s opening.

The first few times.

Round about day 214, fatigue has set in — for the viewers. But even more so for Katy. In addition to the notori-

ous grind of touring, whenever there’s a down minute, she’s jetting off to spend time with her new hubby, Russell Brand (they’ve since split).

He is, as Warren Beatty was in Madonna’s similar on-theroad documentary Truth or Dare, a ghostly figure in the documentary, a rare presence in the dressing room and clearly annoyed when he is caught on camera.

Katy spends far more time with her friends, Mia Moretti and Shannon Woodward (of the Fox sitcom Raising Hope), in settings like the Cat Cafe in Tokyo, where one spends a mint to drink tea in a frilly room filled with pampered cats adorned in human fashions.

A large Part of Me is devoted to Katy’s origin story — how she grew up in a strict Pentecostal household. Her younger brother notes, “We weren’t allowed to eat Lucky Charms growing up because luck was of Lucifer.”

Thanks to a superabundance of home video, we watch Katy grow from saucer-eyed teen gospel singer to an angry Alaniswanna-be who was dumped by her first label. It’s a long, and so-familiar-it’s-almost-tiresome hike to “I Kissed a Girl” and pop success. It’s a trek that is not all that interesting except to Perry’s fans.

What is worth seeing — and shelling out for the 3-D premium — is Perry’s eye-popping

Music Theatre of Denton proves it’s up for the challenge of ‘Putnam County’

usic Theatre of Denton packed houses for its last show, the cheeky Avenue Q. The local music theater company could have chosen to put on the brakes for the next production. But instead, the company stayed in the same gear — irreverent comedy that tests the comfort zones of its audience, then wins it over with heart, character and charm.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is musical theater’s Island of Misfit Toys.

A roster of smart and determined children make their bid for the county spelling bee.

Before the last speller is standing — proud and geeky — each contestant has had to bear his or her deepest insecurities.

The comedy opens Friday.

Putnam County digs up all the awkwardness and uncertainty of adolescence — the really embarrassing stuff that we all discover in middle school — and sets it to a pretty score.

The contenders are a reminder of familiar idiosyncrasies: Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre is a political junkie with a lisp; Marcy Park is a frustrated perfectionist, and Chip Toletino grapples with his newfound and surprising manhood.

The musical was enough to tease its Denton director out of her usual summer sabbatical.

“Actually, it was on my bucket list,” director Terri Hagar Scherer said. “I normally don’t direct during the summer, and now with grandchildren here from England, but when Donna called to ask me if I’d consider directing, I asked what show. When she told me See SPELLING on 10

Spelling it was this show, I was like: ‘No, don’t tell me it’s that one!’ I’ve seen it on Broadway and have loved it ever since.”

Scherer is a founding member of the Runway Theatre in Grapevine and has directed at the Greater Lewisville Community Theatre.

“I’ve never worked in Denton,” Scherer said.

She has, however, worked with some of the founding members of Denton’s theater scene. Years ago, Scherer directed shows produced by Texas Toast, a theatrical fundraising company launched

by Denton theater volunteer and writer Donna Trammell and operated by Frank and Betty Ann Barrow.

Scherer spent 30 years teaching children in dance and theater, and said the slings and arrows suffered by Putnam County’s spellers are familiar.

“We opened a natural foods store in Grapevine in 1977, and I wasn’t a restaurant person. So we boarded up the back porch of the store and I started teaching dance,” Scherer said. “I watched kids grow up in that studio. I had them sometimes as young as 5 and taught them until they were 15, 16 and 17. I understand how their needs change.”

The contestants each have what Scherer called “a light bulb moment.”

“We get to see them in middle school, and then during the epilogue, we get to see the adult they become. It’s a sweet show.

You laugh and laugh and laugh, and then you sort of go, ‘Awww,’” she said.

Scherer isn’t the only newcomer to the Campus Theatre stage in Putnam County. Most of the performers are making their local debut in the show, and musical director Oscar Seung takes up his first Music Theatre of Denton baton.

“I auditioned for Avenue Q, but I couldn’t make my schedule work with the rehearsal schedule,” said Seung, a private Denton music teacher, conductor and opera singer. “I was so impressed with MTD for doing Avenue Q, though, that I told them I’d be happy to help out any way I could. I’ve adminis-

What’s going on? Seung said Music Theatre of Denton isn’t afraid of a little risk.

“I just think the company keeps defying expectations,” he said. “I mean, look at this show.

Just the title. It’s really long and it makes you wonder what it’s all about. This show is all about the music. It has so much heart, so much warmth. You don’t expect these soaring melodies or these beautiful harmonies in a show with a title like this.”

Both Scherer and Seung said the musical numbers are easy on the ears, but hard on the vocalists.

“It’s incredibly challenging,”

Seung said. “We’re going to sing the parts, too. A lot of companies in North Texas, only [the melody line] is sung. When I decided to do this show, I knew we were going to do all the parts. I told the cast, ‘We’re doing the parts. Learn them.’

This score has to be rich and full.”

Music Theatre of Denton is presenting Putnam County in two acts, though it runs only 90 minutes. Because the show includes some profane and vulgar language and sexual references, the musical is rated PG, Scherer said.

Seung said the musical fits in with the company’s vision to produce theater and fine music.

It might not be Gilbert & Sullivan, but it isn’t far from the

sophistication of light opera.

Seung recruited two cellists, a saxophone player, a pianist and keyboardist, percussionist, clarinetist, flutist, oboeist and saxophonist to join him in the orchestra pit.

“It’s not pop, it’s not rock. It’s very unconventional,” Seung said. “That’s what I like about it. It goes back to expectations.

The music defies all your expectations. But it’s very good stuff. Olive’s song [‘The I Love You Song’] gets me every time.

I pretty much can’t look at the actors.”

The music runs through next weekend.
