id anyone else see that mind-boggling handmade sign seen last week on Willowwood Street: “Rx CONTACT LENSES $5?” ■ The literati will be glowing at the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference on July 17-19. And none will be providing more star power at the Hilton DFW Lakes than Barbara Ehrenreich, 73, the veteran muckraker and social activist. Ehrenreich is the author of the 2001 best-seller Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America. She worked undercover as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk. And then she wrote about it. ■ One of the many inane press releases we’ve gotten this week was a top 10 ranking of U.S. presidential candidates, based on their smiles. The worst smile title went to Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, whose tooth-concealing grin makes him look “insincere,” said dentist Howard S. Glazer, who was selected for the smile-ranking task. The best smile title went to Florida’s Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, whose grin looks “normal” and “masculine.” Know who else had a masculine smile, according to Dr. Glazer? Former Secretary of State and Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton. ■ Yikes! Critiques of Harvest House, the cool downtown

Denton bar and music venue, are still showing up on Reddit. The chief complaint? The bartenders aren’t pouring those drinks fast enough. Additional demerits were assigned for not having bar guns to pour soda. Harvest House had better hurry it up. Locals like their drinks poured strong and speedily. Most posts in the Denton subreddit top out at about a dozen comments. Harvest House racked up about 50. Read ’em and weep: http://bit.ly/1JMNugm. ■ The white van at the intersection of Carroll Boulevard and University Drive has added peaches and berries to its typical inventory of locally sourced honey. ■ New Ryan High School librarian Colleen Graves is bringing the first makerspace to Denton schools this fall. Makerspaces are communities and networks of people who create handmade products, art and objects. Graves has been mentoring librarians around the country in, among other things, taking the 3-D printer and expanding on it for the good of students and library patrons. ■ Mildred A. Peveto, the director of the Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School, is on the mend after getting hurt in a fall. In addition to leading the company’s educational outreach to ages 17 and younger, Peveto is responsible for some of the strongest theater the company has produced in a decade or so. ■ The 2015 LexiCon Writers Conference will be held July 17-19 at the Holiday Inn and Suites, 1434 Centre Place Drive in Denton. Parting shots Last week, we committed a mortal sin against a towering American literary figure. We misspelled novelist Ernest Hemingway’s last name. We pour out a goblet of good Spanish wine in penitence. “Oh, and now that it is legal for everyone, marriage still sucks.” — Denton Record-Chronicle film critic Boo Allen, who has successfully avoided the institution forever. Singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse is the focus of a new documentary, “Amy.”
Candle in the wind ‘Amy’ pays tribute to singer’s talent and vulnerability By Chase Whale Film Critic

on fame, addiction and death. The first thing that came to mind was how we are going to be remembered when we die. More specifically, how celebrities are remembered after death. When I think of Robin Williams, I don’t think about his devastating end, I think about Hook and the magical memories he gave me when I was a boy. When Philip Seymour Hoffman’s name comes up, I think about his phenomenal job in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia and, well, every performance he’s ever given. I was not an avid listener of Winehouse’s music, but I had heard her voice, which was raw, real and powerful. Her talent would have taken her as

“Minions” looks at the little yellow creatures’ lives before the “Despicable Me” films.
Minions by Masses will turn out for spin-off about funny critters’ lives before Gru By Maricar Estrella Fort Worth Star-Telegram
henever there are scene-stealers in a film, there seems to always be chatter about possible spin-offs. Minions is the latest attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the diminutive deviled-egg henchmen brought to life in the Despicable Me films. In the 2010 and 2013 movies, the sidekicks

played off their dastardly-yet-well-meaning boss Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and made sitting through the credits high-level, humorous artistry. In the animated Minions, we’re given a prequel of sorts, a backstory to how the pill-shaped tribe came to be. Narrated by Geoffrey Rush, the film begins with a historic time line of how the singlecelled yellow organisms evolved and their failed attempts to serve despicable masters — from T. rex to Napoleon. Without a master, the Minions fall into a deep depression, which prompts ambitious Kevin to lead a crew out of their Antarctic cave to find a new evil boss. He chooses guitar-loving Stuart and (begrudgingly) lovable shortcake Bob. The trio’s journey leads them to New York City

NOW PLAYING Inside Out (★★★★1⁄2) Pixar’s animated Inside Out is a clever film about the importance of family — told through the thoughts of an 11-year-old girl, Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias). When Riley’s family moves to San Francisco, her emotions have to put in some heavy work. Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) get sucked out of their spots in Riley’s brain, and they have to get back before she’s left with only Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) forever. of often rambling setup finally leads to a long-awaited climax when Mike Lane (Channing Tatum), fellow chiseled stud Matt Bomer and their buff male stripper cohorts take the stage to bump, hump, grind and swivel tirelessly. Those who fondly remember the original Magic Mike will be sad to realize that Matthew McConaughey is missing this time around. So is director Steven Soderbergh; his associate Gregory Jacobs has taken the reins. What’s most obviously missing in this sequel, though, is a real plot. The Romans used to purr the phrase into their dogs’ ears, long before the Marine Corps adopted the Latin for “Always faithful” as their motto. Most faithful of all? Marine Corps war dogs. That’s the message of Max, a touching if somewhat clunky crowd-pleaser about one such dog who comes to live with the family of the soldier who died serving with him in Afghanistan. With Lauren Graham, Thomas Haden Church and Josh Wiggins. Rated PG, 111 minutes. — Tribune News Service Terminator Genisys (★★★) At the start of Genisys, Judgment Day has happened. It’s the future, and soldiers are battling the machines. The world’s savior, John Connor (Jason Clarke), is now all grown up. His team takes out Skynet, but not before the machines send a Terminator back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Connor sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to protect Sarah, but when he arrives, everything has changed. Sarah already knows about Judgment Day, a T-1000 (Byung-hun Lee) is currently pursuing her, and she’s got a T-800 Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) on her side. Genisys is about time travel, with alternate timelines and complex paradoxes, as well as plot holes and questions without answers. Genisys appears to want to bring back some nostalgia and have a party with a lot of sublime action and special effects that are a visual feast. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — C.W.

they’re unforgettable. Shaped and shaded like Twinkies snack cakes, the minions wear denim overalls and strap goggles over their googly eyes — and some of them have just one eye. Like a lot of human kids, minions like mischief and giggle uncontrollable over certain body functions and noises. The Denton Public Library has exactly one title about the troublemakers ordered and on the way, said youth services librarian Stacey Irish-Keffer. Meet the Minions is a 32-page picture book for readers in the first and second grades. Other than that, families can check out one of seven copies of the movie that started it all, Despicable Me. If a movie double-feature is in order, families can check out one of 13 copies of the sequel, Despicable Me 2. Irish-Keffer said the DVDs are in demand. “It’s been checked out 276 times,” Irish-Keffer said of the first film. “Despicable Me 2 has been checked out 371 times. They’re pretty popular, even with elementary school kids. Adults think they’re cute, too, so they kind of span the generations.” They aren’t overtaking Disney princesses among IrishKeffer’s young patrons, though. “I’m not sure they’re on the level of the Disney princesses,
no. Not like Frozen,” she said. “They might have broken the mold with Frozen.” Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Golden Triangle Mall is known for hopping on the coattails of popular children’s and young adult titles with literary and activity tie-ins, and community relations manager Mark Brown said Minions is no exception. It won’t be as massive or coordinated as the release parties around books that became huge movie hits, like Harry Potter or Twilight. But Minions merchandising has included books, toys and games — all of which are in Barnes & Noble’s wheelhouse. The local store said the 11

tures from her youth up to her last year of life. Before fame really hit, Winehouse loved goofing around with a video camera — which really loved her when she was in front of the lens. Through this footage, we witness her youthful innocence, her rise to fame, and finally her struggles with it. Writing and making good music was her escape, but eventually alcohol took a tenacious grip on her and it’s what ended her legacy at the tender age of 27, the same age acclaimed musicians Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin died, among many more. (It’s mindboggling how all of these died at the same age — coined as the “27 Club” — but all of them lived fast.)
The chief take-away from this movie is that addiction is a disease and often incurable. Winehouse’s disease was alcohol. She battled to get a bottle, and battled to stay away from it. Her hit song “Rehab” was a cry for help and, more importantly, is about her father, a man she loved dearly and trusted. She trusted him, and while the documentary is fair to him, it’s clear he had an influence on her death through his own longing for fame. Winehouse’s friends told Kapadia they had asked her to go to rehab, but her father said she didn’t need it and that she was fine. But she wasn’t fine, and we know this gifted soul would not have the fairy-tale ending she deserved. The documentary also explores Winehouse’s tumultuous,
on-again-off-again relationship with ex-husband Blake FielderCivil. She loved him as hard as the heart would allow, but their highs and lows (and her introduction to crack cocaine) took a physical and mental toll. Fielder-Civil appears bleak and full of guilt and regret in the documentary. Amy is difficult to watch. Ironically, watching her peaceful phases sting because we see her full of talent, joy and life. We see a pivotal moment in her career, when she finally went to rehab, gave it a real go, and is clean. She’s recording a duet with legend Tony Bennett, so ecstatic and nervous because, well, it’s Tony Bennett, who says of her: “She was a natural, true jazz artist.” That’s when it punched me in the heart: Winehouse will never know how much of an impact
she left on her fans, colleagues, the industry and people like me, who didn’t know much about her until after her death. Amy is one of the most important, tragic and compelling documentaries I have ever seen. It shows how sneaky and vicious addiction can be, the difficulties of juggling fame while trying to stay true to what you want in this life, and why it’s critical to love yourself and truly believe you are loved by others. It might only be a few, but those few will move mountains for you if they have to. If you have a chance to see this in theaters, I say go, go, go.
