Preteens and teens can learn a little about archery through an upcoming course being put on by the Denton Parks and Recreation Department.
Right on target Camp teaches kids archery, rock climbing Have a teen who idolizes Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games? Or maybe Daryl Dixon from the AMC television series The Walking Dead? Preteens and teens can learn a little about their hero’s chief skill — archery — through an upcoming course through Denton Parks & Recreation. The camp also teaches rock climbing. Next week’s “adventure camp” session is dedicated to
teaching campers what a quiver is, how to “nock” an arrow and what to do when the campers are ready to let their arrows fly. Young archery students will learn how a bow works, how to improve their aim and shooting techniques. For rock climbing, campers will learn how to climb in teams and belay a climbing partner using the indoor rock climbing wall at Denia Recreation Center. — Staff report

reader wonders: Has anyone else noticed city-owned vehicles taking up customer parking at City Hall where Denton Municipal Electric customers pay their bills? How inconvenient when the sign reads “customer parking only” and all the lots are full. ... ■ At 10 a.m. Saturday, KERA-TV (Channel 13) is scheduled to air the Denton episode of The Daytripper. The episode from late 2012 promises to visit the Square, Rooster’s Roadhouse and Texas Motor Speedway. ■ You might call John Davis, the city’s director of engineering services, and Mark Nelson, the transportation director, camera shy after we asked them to be in a photo and they demurred. Then again, maybe they knew something about standing next to the most dangerous intersection in the city, Loop 288 and Interstate 35E, that we didn’t? ■ Why does Denton-bred MC Wreckamic (Steve Mullen) tease us with an exemplary 16 bars of freestyle while talking about his retirement from music? C
ountry artist Sam Riggs plays the latest installment of the ongoing concert series Music in the Park in Aubrey at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday. Riggs came up as a songwriting student of Ray Wylie Hubbard. He started out making commercial things ready for radio, and then came Hubbard. The association rubbed off on
Country troubadour to play park series show Riggs, sanding down the glossy, produced edges of his songs and letting them wear and tear a bit. He made the jump from Florida to Austin, and got to work studying the likes of Reckless Kelly and other Lone Star outfits. By 2012, Riggs had his full length Outrun the Sun finished
and ready. True to its title, Riggs’ collection of songs betrays a songwriter aware of the sand sliding through the needle-narrow neck of the hourglass. While he’s still of a glossier sort than Hubbard, Riggs’ unprocessed jams and sunbeaten lyrics result in a sound
that won’t expire too soon or wear out its welcome. Aubrey residents and visitors can spread a blanket or open a lawn chair and enjoy the free concert at the Aubrey Festival Grounds, 301 South Main St. The show is suitable for all ages.

Crank-off promises sweet, frosty treat on Saturday By Cindy Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
It’s cool. It’s sweet. It’s creamy. It’s homemade ice cream, and come Saturday, inventive locals will be twisting handles and mixing flavors for the Ice Cream Crank-Off on Walnut. Downtown merchants saw past the rain-cooled temperatures of early summer and dreamed up a wingding just right for the scorching heat of July: a great big taste test of homemade ice cream. Ice cream makers will set up along the 100 block of Walnut Street in downtown Denton at 9 a.m., but the frozen treats won’t be handed out until 11 a.m. Kathy McFarland of Walnut off the Square, which organized the event, said the crankoff already has a nice roster of participants. She expects there will be room for contestants who sign up on Saturday morning, but warned that “space is limited.” Those who want to be guaranteed a booth space need only pony up $25 and send an email to the Walnut off the Square page on Facebook. Crank-off coordinators weren’t giving away any of the competitors recipes, but attendees can likely expect some classic flavors — like vanilla bean or chocolate. McFarland said judges have at least one category — “North of Ordinary” — for competitors who take a risk. There’s no telling, McFarland said, whether someone will concoct a Shiner Bock ice cream, or a Guinness-maple mix. Denton has a healthy contingent of vegetarians, which could inspire some clever ice

Englishman Joe Jackson will perform at Majestic Theatre in Dallas on Oct. 10. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Jackson fine British pop star tours, this time with jazz on his mind A lot of musicians are described as versatile, but Englishman Joe Jackson embodies the descriptor. Jackson rose to pop music fame in the 1980s with songs like “Is She Really Going Out With
Him” and “Stepping Out.” But Jackson is a classical composer, and on his Fast-Forward Tour, the songwriter pays tribute to jazz icon Duke Ellington. He plays the Majestic Theatre in Dallas on Oct. 10. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday. For tickets, visit www.AXS.com or call 1-888929-7849. — Staff report

OPENING FRIDAY Mr. Holmes ( ★1⁄2)★Ian McKellen stars as a 90-something Sherlock Holmes in post World War II England in this period piece directed by Bill Condon. Holmes now spends most of his time reflecting on his last case, some 30 years past. He also takes time to interact with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker). In a needless, pointless diversion, Holmes travels briefly to Japan. Amiable but slight film benefits from McKellen’s presence. Rated PG, 104 minutes. At the Dallas and Plano Angelika. — Boo Allen

successful journalist at an equal-
ly successful magazine, which means she worked hard at one point in her life, because it’s not easy to make a living off writing. One caveat about her job: Amy’s boss (Tilda Swinton in one deliciously nasty role) just might be Satan in the form of a magazine editor. She cuts Amy down as far as the verbal ax will allow but likes her work. For a chance at a promotion, Amy is assigned a simple job — write a story on a sports therapist who doctors famous athletes. His name is Aaron (Bill Hader) and he’s a genial, happygo-lucky kind of dork, not really Amy’s type. But as they spend time together for her story, she begins to fall for him. Will she change her promiscuous ways and finally settle down? You probably know the answer, as this kind of story tends to follow a formula, but watching her journey is so hilarious, so fun, this movie needs to be on your list of must-see movies. In fact, stop reading this and head to the theater now. I won’t be mad at you. Trainwreck is full of insane and great ideas no comedy has touched before. Schumer’s
speedy comedy grabs you tightly and quickly. Schumer couldn’t have done Trainwreck without Judd Apatow, who directed the film. As a team, writer-star Schumer and director Apatow are a match made in heaven and Trainwreck is Apatow’s best film to date. For the supporting roles, Trainwreck could not have cast better side players. LeBron James plays a sentimental version of himself, and his performance is priceless. He comes close to ruling the whole movie. Him and Cena — sports guys by trade — both play up their stereotypes and pump up the volume on their respective parts more than you could possibly imagine. These two went above and beyond. Their scenes will never stop being funny regardless of how many times the film is watched — guaranteed. As a comedian, Schumer is known for bringing her strange, awkward and very relatable sex life into her routines and she does not hold back in Trainwreck. This is why her work towers above most. follies in their routines or on screen, but this is just another Tuesday for Amy. Inside Amy Schumer, the comedian’s critically lauded Comedy Central series, gives you a peek at her filthy mind. But Trainwreck shows how dirty she’s willing and wanting to go. She chugs through the movie with gags that will have you in tears. As leading lady, Schumer crushes it. She’s one of the funniest comedians working today and a riot to watch. Bring tissue to wipe your eyes from laughing so much and so hard. Guffaws aside, this movie also has soft, joyous moments, something filthy comedies often won’t risk. Trainwreck is so full of heart, I thought mine was going to explode. As the conductor of this train, Schumer is in complete control. You better hop on or get out of the way — Trainwreck is unstoppable entertainment.
