e the candlestick. That’s the mantra for 10-year-old Cameron Dinger as he prepares to play the role of Lumiere in Denton Community Theatre Theatre School’s Beauty and the Beast Jr., an adaptation for young performers of the Broadway musical based on the 1991 blockbuster animated Disney feature. Cameron is one of 40 summer campers in the musical about a young French girl who takes her father’s place as captive in an enchanted castle. The castle is governed by Beast, a young French prince who scorned a sorceress and was turned into a frightful creature prone to temper tantrums. “Whenever I’m up on that stage, I’m not acting like someone else,” Cameron said. “I’m being someone else.” As Lumiere, Cameron said he’s careful to assume the “shape” of a candlestick — feet together, arms out and bent at the elbows. It helps, he said, that his costume includes flame-like

light bulbs that protrude from his costume sleeves. Castmates Cassidy Hendrickson, Maddee Young and Ethan de Bruin also play furnishings in the enchanted castle — respectively, Mrs. Potts, a cook who’s been turned into a teapot; her son, Chip, now a teacup; and Cogsworth, the castle timekeeper-turned-clock. The castle servants were cursed along with their prince. Like him, they wait for the curse to be broken by the Prince’s discovering love — and by being loved in return. It’s a hard, hard sell, given his frightening appearance and moodiness. “I have a spout, so I get to animate the character with one arm,” said Hendrickson, 14. “I find that if you want the audience to believe something, you have to believe in it yourself.” Ethan, 11, agrees. “I put myself in my character’s mind. You try to think what it would feel like to be them,” he said. “It’s hard to explain, but you kind of go all stiff.” The campers are enrolled in the summer session of the theater school, which mounts a full-

scale production in three weeks — two weeks of intense rehearsal and one week leading up to the performances. The camp holds auditions to cast the campers, who then learn character development, music and dance in rehearsal. This year’s camp includes returning students and newcomers. Joshua Burley, 17, is a newcomer. “I heard about auditions from my [Guyer High School] forensics teacher — Mrs. [Karen] Gossett told me about them,” Burley said. Burley has studied speech, debate and theater, and plans to study choir next year. He said even though the character he’s playing is a beast — literally — he relates to the cursed prince. “He seems angry, but he feels pressured by time,” Burley said. “He doesn’t have a lot of time.” The curse keeps time with a rose that grows in a bell jar. If it wilts before Beast discovers love, he’ll spend the rest of his life as a beast, forever feral. “I know what it’s like, because I sometimes feel pressured by time when it comes to school,” Burley said. first trip to All-State Choir during the 2013-14 school year, said the musical is more fun than work. As Belle, Durbin plays a pretty girl with a curious mind and an appetite for adventure that isn’t satisfied in her small town. She fiercely defends her father, Maurice, an aspiring inventor who has a reputation for being the oddball of the village. “I love musical theater,” Durbin said. “Last summer, I was Ariel [in the camp’s production of The Little Mermaid], so it’s like I’m working my way through the Disney princesses. Belle is sweet, but she speaks her mind. Especially where Gaston is concerned.”
Gaston is the dashing huntsman who is also vain and callow. Nine-year-old Lukas JimenezBolin plays Le Fou, Gaston’s sidekick. “He pretty much just wants to be with Belle because she’s the prettiest girl in town,” Lukas said. Ethan Gates plays the brawny but empty-headed Gaston, and he makes ample use of Lukas in the role. “He’s funny, but he’s not a very bright guy,” Lukas said. “I get thrown around a lot. I think he’s a little afraid of Gaston.” Lukas said he’s practiced getting hoisted over Gates’ shoulders, then sloughed off. He’s got most of the show’s pratfalls and physical comedy. He feels primed for the part, though. “I’m used to getting thrown around,” Lukas said. “I have a 12year-old brother.” The musical is directed by Alex Rodriguez. Technical direction is by Elizabeth Lambert. Choreography is by Whitney Hennen and vocal coaching is by Arturo Ortega. Costume design is by Lindsay Tucker and hair and makeup is by Logan Broker. Lighting design is by Shelby DuPont.

ake the broad, slapstick comedy of The Pink Panther film series, and knock the humor down to that of a middle school boy, and you have Fight Boy Theatre’s latest concoction: The Talent Agent. Just because it’s lowbrow doesn’t mean the comedy, written and directed by Fight Boy company member Bryan Patrick, doesn’t tickle the funny bone. The show makes gleeful light of its latently homosexual macho man, Stone Bledsoe, the whining nasal cadence of German villain Siegfried von Roy and the slick sex-kitten wiles of aspiring actress Jane Bond. Patrick, who directs his play, said the company is staging the comedy as a benefit for a local family — Johnny and Amber Bryant and son John — who are prominent volunteers on- and offstage in the local theater scene. “A while back, Jackson Strecher had major health issues, and the whole community came together to support him,” Patrick said. “Johnny had a heart attack at the same time Jackson got sick. We’d been talking about doing something for the Bryants, too, because they’re still getting back on their feet after the heart attack.” The Talent Agent picks up in the middle of the life of Hollywood talent agent Dalton Trudeau (Mike Stephens). Trudeau is contracted by the director of the CIA (Drew Maggs), who demands he find two young actors he can convince to play the part of superheroes in a movie. Trudeau, flanked by special agent Sam (Kevin Wicker-

“The special effects were getting interesting, and the acting was more theatrical,” he said. Patrick’s first two-act play is a concise affair that leaves just about everything except the plot on the cutting room floor. He’s assembled a fearless troupe of performers. Familiar Denton actor Jaimie Rodriguez plays a flamboyantly gay henchman to von Roy. Gafford plays the under-macho Stone with confidence, and doesn’t miss a beat in his unknowing seduction of Rodriguez’s Adler. As the clumsy Trudeau, Stephens might have to use a piece of scenery to dig the rest from Rodriguez’s bashful grin. Patrick isn’t trying to be original in this tale of deceit and double-crossing. “I originally wrote this as part of a trilogy, with some of the same characters appearing in the sequels,” he said. The Bryant clan has endorsed the show. “Johnny is narrating the show,” Patrick said. “It just seemed right to have him do it.”

The Toadies celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut album, “Rubberneck,” tonight at Rockin’ Rodeo.
Toadies toast debut’s 20th year By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer cbreeding@dentonrc.com

aden Todd Lewis said the only thing he knows how to do is make rock
music. Other than answering the call to make music and rock hard as a founding member of Fort Worth alt-rock outfit the Toadies, Lewis said he doesn’t have a magic formula for longevity. The Toadies split in 2001. Lewis revived the group in 2008. “I guess it’s just what I know how to do. I expanded a little with the Burden Brothers,” Lewis said, referring to his Dallas project. “I got out and stretched my legs with that, but rock, it’s what I know.” But then checking in at the studio and then following up with a live show that delivers are no small feats. The Toadies have been on the road celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band’s first full-length
record, Rubberneck. It was the record that produced two Top 40 hits, “Possum Kingdom” and “I Come From the Water.” The Toadies pick up the tour they started in March tonight at Rockin’ Rodeo in Denton. The tour leads up to the seventh annual Dia De Los Toadies, set for Sept. 12-13 in Fort Worth. Lewis said tonight’s show will start with a live performance of Rubberneck, and will end with a set of songs from the rest of the Toadies’ catalog. The band plans to release an album next spring. Rubberneck gained new life for Lewis as part of an acoustic project. “We were on tour when we first got back together, and I was backstage playing the acoustic guitar,” Lewis said. “It had been a while. I was nervous and was banging away on acoustic guitar and this guy from the opening act came back and I heard him say, ‘I

wish you could play your songs on acoustic guitar.’ “I really took that as a compliment, and I started exploring the songs in a more stripped-down way.” Lewis said you can test a song’s mettle with guitar or piano. “It’s kind of fascinating, really. You take a song that you’re used to hearing with distortion on a guitar. And you hear it
with no feedback, no distortion. You’re just up there with the song,” he said. Lewis noted that some songs lend themselves to acoustic versions more readily. “There are always one or two songs that jump out,” he said. “For me, one in particular is ‘Rattler’s Revival.’ It’s such an uptempo dance-y song but it’s totally different when you slow it down a little and play it on the acoustic.” The tour ends in mid-August, and then the band will be helping to put the final touches on Dia De Los Toadies, which features a Texas lineup: Old 97’s, Ume, Quaker City Night Hawks, Somebody’s Darling, Residual Kid, the Longshots, Blank-Men and Rhett Miller. The Toadies headline, and Lewis said he catches some of each act. “We’ve branched out in the last few years, but the idea has been to highlight Texas bands,” Lewis said.

abbit Hole Brewing brings a wonderland of beer to Denton County. The Justin brewery, inspired by the Mad Hatter from the Lewis Carroll classic, is the first full-fledged brewery in the county. The company has grown rapidly since its 2013 opening. Tom Anderson, a co-founder of Rabbit Hole, brews unique recipes for the company by combining ingredients with the heart of an engineer and the mind of the Mad Hatter. Matt Morriss, co-founder and brewmaster, focuses on equipment and consistency. Morriss changed his career path after working for 17 years as a software developer and homebrewing on the side. Co-founder Laron Cheek completes the founding trinity. He focuses on sales, marketing and distribution — but everyone jokes that he really just drives the truck. (Cheek does drive the company truck — while the others stand in as janitors when they are not brewing.) Finally, there’s Tait Lifto, known as Rabbit Hole’s “chief sales sensei.” Lifto said he’s is better at beer tasting than brewing. He started blogging about beer, and worked in sales at Deep Ellum Brewing Co. from 2011 to last year. Morriss and Anderson have been brewing together for about 10 years. They built their own mill and a gris case, which holds grain, out of a closet. Their operation outgrew the closet, eventually attracting Dallas Stars legend Mike Modano — who’s one of the partowners. Rabbit Hole’s founders met Modano a few years ago, and said he was immediately interested in the beer and business. Rabbit Hole’s flagship brew is named for him. “We’re very honored that he actually want to be a part of this whole thing and have his own beer. That’s pretty cool,” Lifto said. Rabbit Hole didn’t want to be another brewery in Dallas or in Fort Worth. The owners looked at different areas, and various cities’ ordinances and issues, and found that Justin city officials were welcoming. On any weekend at Rabbit Hole, beer buffs might find Justin’s mayor pro tem pouring beer behind the bar, or Mayor Greg Scott hanging out. “They wanted us here really badly and they’ve been absolutely fantastic to

With a name like Rabbit Hole, people expect wild flavors, the owners said. “They’re coming, they really are,” Anderson said. “But if your first beer is some 12 percent, hoppy IPA, crazy imperial stout with peanut butter, then people would say, ‘Well, they just do crazy stuff,
they don’t really know what they’re doing.’ So it was really important to us to show people that we knew what we were doing so when we do come out with something crazy, they’ll realize that we did it on purpose.” Rabbit Hole’s current lineup boasts the Rapture, which brings the bold back to brown ales. A rich, toasted malt profile
characterizes this English-American fusion brown ale, with Pacific Coast hops providing a balancing bitterness and subtle citrus character. Mike Modano’s 561 Kolsch-style beer commemorates the hockey player’s record career goals. At the brewery, which opens its doors every Saturday at noon, visitors can try
the Rapidano — a half-and-half blend of the Rapture and 561. Rabbit Hole’s other staple brew is the 10/6 English IPA, crafted with the floormalted Maris Otter winter barley and flavored with three different varieties of English hops. It is bold and flavorful See RABBIT HOLE on 10

Rabbit Hole without overwhelming the palate. Wonderlust, the newest beer to the Rabbit Hole lineup, is a limited release that Lifto expects to sell out by the end of the month. Wonderlust is a saison ale brewed to commemorate the first Rabbit Hole season. Bright, crisp and spicy, it features a Belgian yeast strain selected to create an enchanting and approachable interpretation of the style. Upcoming brews include the Centennial Pale Ale, an American-style pale ale, that will drink easy, but the Red is going to raise the bar and start turning Rabbit Hole into the brewery it should be, Anderson said. They are completing a third new release, an imperial saison, due out around New Year’s Eve. Visit Rabbit Hole for a brewery tour on any Saturday, and you’re in for an event. Every Saturday during the 1 p.m. tour, Cheek wears the Rabbit Hole Mad Hatter hat and leads the crowd in a poetic, sing-song toast. in a token, and it navigates it through the path and chooses the beer for you. Children are welcome on the tour, but they can also play cornhole outside or fold a piece of paper into a Rabbit Hole delivery truck. The brewery lets people name kegs for $5, then sends the brew ambassadors a where’smy-keg email when it arrives at a bar. Anderson said people love to track down their kegs at local bars and get their pictures taken. One bar even tweets the names of newly delivered kegs. Rabbit Hole initially planned to start its second brewhouse on a lot just down the road in 2018. The brewery has grown so rapidly, though, that owners are considering breaking ground next year. “We’re going to build our next brewhouse over there,” Lifto said.
State of the tap R
abbit Hole is but one player in a growing Denton County craft brewing
scene. Doug Smith and Scott Lindsey, co-owners of Audacity Brew House in Denton, are finishing construction, keeping fans updated through their Facebook page. Construction remains on schedule and Smith plans to brew in three to four weeks, hoping to open by September. Smith said he knows the recipes for the first six beers the brewery will offer, and his goal is to have 12 beers on tap. For its first year, Audacity plans to release its beers strictly on draft so the co-owners can tweak their recipes before bottling. Armadillo Ale Works plans to open its Denton brewery in the spring, according to CEO and co-founder Yianni Arestis, although he could not disclose further details.
Ugly Rugger Brewing co-founders Derrick and Summer Rima of Denton are still raising funds to open up a craft brewery. Right now, Armadillo is working on new limited releases — brewed at its temporary base at Deep Ellum Brewing Co. in Dallas. Armadillo’s Greenbelt Farmhouse Ale has hit some new stores, keeping the craft brewers busy. They said they’re pushing retail sales heavily, spreading to Dallas and Fort Worth outlets. The brewery has also released another batch of Brunch Money — a stout-inspired golden ale — at 25 vendors across North Texas, including three Denton locations: Kroger grocery stores at 1592 S. Loop 288 and 5021 Teasley Lane, and Midway Mart at 406 W. Hickory St.
“We’ve had some great responses to Brunch Money,” Arestis said. “Let’s just say I wouldn’t say it’s done, but because of resources we can’t bring it on as a full-time brew.” Ugly Rugger Brewing cofounder Derrick Rima will graduate from the University of North Texas next month and said that he and wife, Summer, are still trying to raising money to open next year. Denton Country is also home to Independent Ale Works in Krum, which has brews on tap at its taproom and at several bars, and a handful of other craft breweries are in the planning stages. — Adam Schrader

OPENING FRIDAY And So It Goes ( 1⁄2) Two old pros show the kids how chemistry works in a romantic comedy in And So It Goes, a love-the-last-timearound romp that’ll give its target audience the warm fuzzies. Diane Keaton and Michael Douglas fight, flirt, annoy and court like it’s 1979. This Rob Reiner comedy has the Oscar winners in grandparent mode, just a couple of spry old-timers forced together when the grandkid he never knew moves in, and prefers the company of the neighbor lady who cannot stand him. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Le Chef (Comme Un Chef) ( ) Slight but amusing Frenchlanguage comedy about an overcaffeinated young chef (Michael Youn) who lands a position with a famous temperamental chef (Jean Reno). They have their fractious moments together but inevitably team up to save the restaurant and to win over their women. A souffle. Written and directed by Daniel Cohen. Rated PG-13, 85 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Hercules The mythical Greek hero Hercules leads a band of mercenaries to help end a bloody civil war in the land of Thrace and return the rightful king to his throne. With Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes. Directed by Brett Ratner. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Lucy ( 1⁄2) Lucy, a student of some sort living in Taiwan, and a few other unfortunates are forced to become drug mules, doomed to fly to Europe with packages implanted in their stomachs. Roughed up by thugs, Lucy suffers blows to the abdomen, and the drug starts leaking into her system — enhancing her brain capacity and leaving her with only 24 hours to live. She heads to Paris to meet Professor Norman, an expert on cerebral capacity (Morgan Freeman), and simultaneously, she’s trying to recover all the drug packets, with the help of a police detective (Amr Waked). And this is where it gets really weird. At a certain point, the best strategy may be to just sit back, listen to the pounding music, admire those bright colors, and just shut that brain down entirely. Director Luc Besson knows his way around a camera, and you can argue about the merits of the storyline. But the dialogue often sounds hammy and
Gunther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman) tries to track a Chechen Muslim he suspects might be a terrorist in “A Most Wanted Man.” Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions
Strung along By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
To make the world a safer place. That’s it. That’s what motivates the words and actions of virtually every character in A Most Wanted Man, a tense, well-drawn, post-Sept. 11 espionage caper. Anton Corbijn (The American) directs, but Wanted Man will probably be best known for having one of the last film appearances by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Despite adopting an awkward German accent, the late actor excels in his role. And although his persuasive performance as a German intelligence official should be recognized, it should not overshadow the overall fine film. Wanted Man has many of
clunky. — The Associated Press
NOW PLAYING Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ( 1⁄2) Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) delivers a thematically and textually dark follow-up to 2011’s Rise of the
‘Wanted Man’ weaves harrowing, fascinating post-Sept. 11 tale
the qualities found in the works of its source novelist, John Le Carre. The film exudes the same chilly atmospherics as Le Carre’s master Cold War novel The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. The uniformly humorless, taciturn characters all believe they are making the world a safer place. Subsequently, their dedication and focus make them fascinating. Hoffman plays Hamburg intelligence chief Gunther Bach-
mann. When a Chechen, a possible terrorist, sneaks into town, Bachmann faces off with his superiors about whether to allow the suspect freedom while being followed, or having the possible danger immediately deported. Bachmann wins a 72-hour window, setting in motion his team that forces grudging cooperation from a banker (Willem Dafoe) and the Chechen’s human rights lawyer (Rachel McAdams). From there, director Corbijn, from Andrew Bovell’s script, cynically manipulates his characters through the escalating drama that snags viewers, forcing them to become engaged in the drama’s outcome. The delicious irony comes in having all the players believing they are the exception about being manipu-
lated, when, in reality, they are all at the end of someone’s puppet strings. Wanted Man confronts a tricky language problem in having a predominantly American cast play Germans speaking English in stilted (and not entirely believable) accents. Initially moving beyond the language awkwardness proves a challenge, but once the intricate plot kicks in and it grows increasingly difficult to tell the good guys from the bad, the language becomes an afterthought — something the movie never does.
Planet of the Apes. Outside a bleak and barely recognizable San Francisco, apes thrive, led by Caesar (Andy Serkis). Humans (including Jason Clarke and Keri Russell) encroach, setting off the inevitable conflict. Good mix of effects, imaging and atmospherics. Rated PG-13, 130
minutes. — B.A. Planes: Fire & Rescue In this animated movie set in a world of anthropomorphic aircraft, a famous air racer learns that his engine is damaged and shifts gears into the world of aerial firefighting. With the voices of Dane Cook and Julie Bowen.
Rated PG, 83 minutes. — LAT The Purge: Anarchy A new group of individuals fights to survive the annual night on which all crime is legal for 12 hours in this sequel to the 2013 film The Purge. With Frank Grillo, Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez. Rated R, 103 minutes. — LAT
A Most Wanted Man Rated R, 121 minutes. Opens Friday.
