ecause a four-day, “walkable” music festival just isn’t enough. What’s the question? The question is this: Why would 35 Denton, that scrappy team of DIY art and music enthusiasts, stage a big bash in one of the hottest months of the year? 35 Denton could have planned the Hot Wet Mess — the Sept. 1 all-day music bash (with Super Soakers, water balloons and water slide, probably) — to give fans of the spring music fest a hair of the dog that bit them, to keep the organization on our collective radar or, perhaps, as a counterpoint to

the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, the country and Western bonanza that precedes it. Regardless of the reasons, 35 Denton has booked an impressive slate of acts to whip the college demographic into a lather. Reggie Watts, comedian, human beatbox and rhyme master, returns to Denton to make music on the spot with his loop recorder pedal. Her Royal Highness of Bounce, Big Freedia, also returns to Denton to get thousands of booties quaking to her infectious and powerful bounce music. The Black Lips, a rowdy Atlanta quartet, brings its rack-

et to Denton for anyone who needs to let out his or her wired, adolescent rioter for a set. (Seriously. Got a hankering to break something or spray paint a public wall? Put on your steel-toed boots and head to the fairgrounds and let your inner demon child howl at the moon — even though you’ll be blinded by the Texas summer sun when you do it.) The one-time Denton duo Fergus & Geronimo will make noise at the Hot Wet Mess, too, along with Portland’s Mortal Orchestra and Los Angeles duo No Age. Special guests are Denton’s RTB2 and DJ Sober. — Lucinda Breeding

ohn Evarts has wrung comedy from drama before, and he does it again in his adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass for the local children’s theater. Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School opens its summer show this weekend at the Campus Theatre. Evart’s musical, Alice in Wonderland … or Down the Rabbit Hole and Through the Looking Glass, is performed by students in the school’s summer camp. Evarts wrote the music for

the project, too. Though Carroll’s book can be creepy, even scary at turns, Evarts amplifies the fanciful and delightful in the story. The audience drops down the White Rabbit’s hole with the young heroine to meet the Mad Hatter, the Frog Footman, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts. The show is directed by Kenny Fudge, choreography is by Cassie Henderson and vocal directing is by Tara Linn Hunter. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets cost $10. For reservations, call 940-382-1915. The show is suitable for all ages. — Lucinda Breeding

Rockin’ Rodeo celebrates anniversary with four-day bash

ockin’ Rodeo celebrates its seventh anniversary starting today. A four-day bash means the venue will do a brisk business in shows this weekend. Rockin’ Rodeo keeps Denton in country and Western, Red Dirt and roots music, while letting some hip-hop and dance

music on its sound system rotation on other nights. The anniversary party starts today with “Stripped,” an acoustic show featuring Rich O’Toole, John David Kent, Joey Green, Mike Ryan, Ryan Ready, Matt Slovacek, Shawn Fussell, Grant Croucher and Maren Morris. Cover is $10.

On Friday, Playboy playmates Valerie Mason and Kelley Thompson will play host to “50 Shades of Sexy,” a girls’ night out — with “crazy contests” that will get plenty of men in the door. Women 21 and older can get in without a cover charge until 10 p.m. The anniversary weekend

culminates with rockers Trapt headlining on Sunday, with Pulse and Red Angel Theory. Tickets are $15. To buy tickets, visit www.rockinrodeodenton. com. Rockin Rodeo is just off the University of North Texas campus at 1009 Ave. C.

06 Mexican Lions stalk electronic scene

F

or Denton electronic outfit Mexican Lions, the name of the game is a few boundaries and a lot of improvisation.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Until they hit the stage or take over a house show — then, the band follows something of a blueprint. “We definitely like to jam a lot when we rehearse,” band member Abbas Khorasani said. “And when we’re recording, we have very loose parameters. We like to let it happen on its own. When we play a show, we pretty much know what we’re going to be doing, though.” Mexican Lions assembled in late 2009 when Khorasani and Riley Tunnell got together and started making music with their computers, experimenting with sound. The group has evolved into an electronic act that embraces the fuzzy labels of experimental and ambient music. Experimental and ambient music involves two big risks — making more noise than music, and getting so ambient with the sound that it becomes aural static, not to mention

boring. “We’re a fan of those things,” Khorasani said of atonal noise and music that can be more background than centerstage. “But we know that there is only so much an audience will tolerate. You try to walk the line between doing the things you like without losing the audience.” The band plays Tuesday night at the split-tape release of Pocket Change and Ops Esponjah at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, the Denton

venue that supports local electronic music most consistently. In its earlier days, Mexican Lions was taking music by members’ favorite bands — they cite Aphex Twin specifically — and covering their songs live without producing a rote imitation. The group has evolved into a primarily live act that has a few tunes online and plans to slip into a Panhandle House studio this weekend to make something — a full-length album could come of it, Khorasani said.

Mexican Lions integrates some Eastern sounds into its music, a product of Khorasani’s Iranian-Pakistani heritage. The musicians are keen on the 1980s analog drums and bass, too, owing to the authenticity of the sound. Electronic can sound plastic and flimsy enough without digital effects wrapping a project in shiny cellophane sound. “It feeds into the whole ambient thing we do. It’s really an ideal musical palette for us,” Khorasani said.

Khorasani and band mate Ryan Pivovar both studied in the University of North Texas College of Music, where Khorasani, who studied guitar, said he admired much of Pivovar’s solo work as a composition student. Electronic music could be considered a stepkid in Denton’s indie music circles. “I wouldn’t say the scene is growing in popularity, but I think it’s growing in creativity. It’s growing horizontally, I’d say,” Khorasani said. They’re with the band: Abbas Khorasani, synthesizer and vocals; Riley Tunnell, software, synthesizer, guitar and voice; Ryan Pivovar, software, synthesizer and vocals; Carl Solomon, saxophone, bansuri and flute. Jon Quam occasionally puts together video for the band’s live gigs. Details: Pocket Change and Ops Esponjah split-tape release party with Vulgar Fashion, Yeahdef, Mexican Lions and Bloodwitch, on Tuesday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the music starts after 10 p.m. Cover is $1 for everyone of drinking age, $3 for everyone too young to buy alcohol. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, Richard Ayoade and Vince Vaughn play suburbanites who stumble upon some strange goings-on in The Watch.

Step Up Revolution Newly arrived in Miami, an aspiring dancer falls for the leader of a local dance crew, and together they battle a wealthy developer. With Ryan Guzman, Kathryn McCormick, Misha Gabriel and Peter Gallagher. Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

NOW PLAYING The Amazing Spider-Man (###1/2) It’s impossible to avoid the comparisons, so we may as well just get them out of the way early so we can move on. This reboot is pretty much different in every way from the staggeringly successful Marvel Comics-inspired trilogy that preceded it. Much of that has to do with the central performance from Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker as a misunderstood outsider, a rebel with a chip on his shoulder. That slightly arrogant attitude gives the whole movie a restless, reckless energy. Emma Stone is bright as ever as Peter’s love interest, Gwen Stacy, with Rhys Ifans nicely underplaying his role as Spider-Man’s nemesis. Directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Rated PG-13, 138 minutes. — The Associated Press The Dark Knight Rises (##1/2) Director Christopher Nolan directs the last of his three Batman films with Christian Bale again playing the dark knight. A villain (Tom Hardy) steals a nuclear weapon and threatens to blow up Gotham, while several other plot points play out in this overwritten opus. Anne Hathaway, as an undesignated Catwoman, and Marion Cottillard appear as eyecandy femme fatales. A mediocre movie, not bad — just not as good as earlier versions. Rated PG-13, 164 minutes. — Boo Allen Magic Mike (###1/2) Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Ocean’s 11) makes movies about sexy subjects, then strips away the sexiness about them. Now he’s directed Magic Mike, about the cheesy world of male stripping in the cheesy setting of Tampa, Fla. It all seems glamorous and thrilling at first, though, for Alex Pettyfer’s character, Adam, who serves as our guide once the more established Mike (Channing Tatum) recruits him to be a dancer at the Club Xquisite male revue. With Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello. Rated R, 110 minutes. — AP

Suburban sprawl By Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

It’s good to see Vince Vaughn back riding that Red Bull. He’s lost the “fat and self-satisfied” look of recent films. The caffeine is back, and so is the breathless manic patter. In The Watch, the neighborhood-watch-discovers-analien-invasion comedy, he’s second banana to Ben Stiller, trying like heck to keep from being third-billed to Jonah Hill. So Vaughn’s back to his old self, riffing like a fiend, improvising nicknames for the other characters — Franklin (Hill) becomes “Frank-nBeans,” “Frank-n-Furter,” and Evan (Stiller) is “Evan-rude,” “Evander,” “Ever-ready.” Vaughn’s brought his Agame to a sometimes ponderous, sometimes explosively funny comedy that benefits from a “top this” one-liner ethos from the cast. Stiller does a variation of his overly earnest straight-man shtick — Evan is an Ohio Costco manager who obsessively exercises, obsessively collects “friends” of every race and creed, who obsessively

organizes “clubs.” Bob (Vaughn) joins Evan’s Neighborhood Watch to get out of the house, away from the wife and kid, to drink Budweiser and lead Bachman-Turner Overdrive sing-alongs. Hill’s Franklin has an oily Lee Harvey Oswald haircut, a thing for military surplus clothes and switchblades and is totally down with “this vigilante squad, militia, whatever you’re calling it.” And Jamarcas (Richard Ayoade of British TV’s The IT Crowd) is the frizzy-haired foreigner who just wants to assimilate. A bit. The screenwriters (Seth Rogen among them) took inspiration from the paranoid Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” and the screen comedy

The ’Burbs in trying to cook up some reason to get these guys together, talking dirty, swilling beer and increasingly paranoid at the bizarre murders that are popping up in their quiet suburb. Something with green goo and tentacles is skinning people. And it may be disguising itself as one of them — a neighbor; the boy going a little too far with Bob’s teenage daughter; the doofus cop (Will Forte). The plot is secondary here, an excuse to put the foursome in a soccer-mom-mobile, drinking, topping each other’s jokes about urinating in a beer can and “sharing” — their disappointments at not joining the police force, at not being attractive to women, at Facebook stalking Bob’s sexually curious teenage daughter. Vaughn’s been playing dads lately, and he makes those shouted scenes with daughter Chelsea (Erin Moriarty) sing. “You’re gonna let some guy car wash the inside of your mouth with his tongue? On Facebook?” The bits are funnier than the movie that Rogen, co-writer

Evan Goldberg (Pineapple Express) and director and Saturday Night Live vet Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) cook up around them. R. Lee Ermey shows up to cuss, call the watchers girly names and wave a shotgun around. Billy Crudup practically oozes as a new neighbor a little too appreciative of Evan’s physical fitness. There’s an orgy, so look for SNL cameos in that. And Rosemarie DeWitt, who broke out with Mad Men, does the sexually voracious thing as Evan’s hot-to-get-preggers wife. The graphic violence — played for gooey laughs — and the flat-footed way the movie stops any time a special effect is needed (there are aliens, after all) cripple The Watch. The post-Trayvon Martin subject matter doesn’t have quite the bad timing of Step Up Revolution, which has dance scenes with smoke bombs and gas masks that take us to Aurora, Colo. But if we can’t laugh at beerswilling trigger-happy Neighborhood Watchers, what’s the point of moving to the ’burbs?

Bright idea After reading about need, Recycled co-workers book concert to benefit Apple Tree Project By Rachel Watts For the Denton Record-Chronicle

n an article about the Apple Tree Project — which provides school supplies, clothing and shoes to students in the Denton school district — Jenny Seman was struck by what she read: 41 percent of the district’s nearly 25,000 students are considered economically disadvantaged. The local musician and Recycled Books employee was immediately inspired to help. By teaming up with her fellow employees, many of whom are local musicians or aficionados of Denton nightlife, Seman landed on the idea of sponsoring “Recycledpalooza” — a seven-band concert benefit and bake sale at Dan’s Silverleaf on Wednesday,

hosted by past and present employees of Recycled Books Records CDs. “Jenny started telling all of us employees about the Apple Tree Project and my heart just swelled,” Recycled Books employee Lacey Richins said. “Of course I’d want to help, so I’ve been telling friends, family, and anyone who will listen about it.” All funds raised from the show and bake sale will go to Interfaith Ministries’ Apple Tree Project. Recycled Books owner Don Foster agreed to make a matching donation equal to the amount raised at the door. “We Recycled employees have long kicked the idea around about putting a show together where all our bands See BENEFIT on 10

could play,” Seman said. “After reading that article, I was convinced that it would be a great charity to do a show for. Everyone at Recycled was enthusiastic about it, too.” A bake sale led by Seman’s friend Kelly Evans will also be part of the night. Blueberry and apple bourbon pies, wasabi cupcakes and vegan baked goods are a few of the treats people can expect to see at Recycledpalooza, Seman said. Last year, Interfaith Ministries raised more than $140,000 in funds and in-kind gifts, helping a total of 1,426 children. Executive Director Condell Garden said the nonprofit agency’s goal is always to help more children each year. “I think it is very generous that [Recycled] wants to give up their time and their talent to do that for the kids here in Denton,” Garden said. “I think everyone in Denton loves Recycled Books, so what could be better? I think it’s fabulous.” The Apple Tree Project is one of half a dozen seasonal programs Interfaith Ministries tackles, although with more than 10,000 economically disadvantaged students in the dis-

trict, the need for this specific program is ample. The number is based on students who qualify for the federal free or reduced-price lunch program, Garden said. “When I learned these statistics, I was shocked,” Seman said. I was always able to have fresh clothes, shoes and school supplies growing up, and I hate to think that there are kids who don’t get to have any of that in

the community I live in.” Interfaith Ministries is one of 22 partner agencies of United Way of Denton County, meaning it receives a portion of its operating revenue from funds donated to United Way. Education is one of United Way’s primary tenets, says spokeswoman Shannon Goleman. “The Recycled team is good people,” Goleman said. “They are constantly supporting the education and quality of life in our community, so while this particular event is greatly appreciated, it comes as no surprise. “It is really beautiful to see all these different kinds of people and different skill sets come together for such a worthy cause.”
