Country-roots act Dolly Shine keeps some of the grit tephenville roots-rock band Dolly Shine doesn’t have a record label to call home, but the indie life isn’t so bad for the quartet. Guitar, fiddle, bass and drums make for a set of tunes ready-made for country radio. The straightforward pop melodies call to mind the oddly feelgood mournful music of the Band Perry (“Walkin’ to New Orleans”), but with a helping of Lyle Lovett’s wry way of seeing the world (“Dancing in Circles”). The four-piece is Zack McGinn, Wesley Hall, Johnny Goodson, Jerrod Flusche and Dillon Sampson. Since dropping Room to Breathe in 2013, Dolly Shine has sharpened its act on small-venue crowds in Oklahoma and Texas. One minute, the four-piece can set the scene for two-stepping and other sawdust-floor sorts of dancing, and in the next, the band can rock a little harder, cut a little deeper with jagged edges. bout 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the word on social media was that there were “250 and counting” at the Denton for Bernie Sanders rally at Hailey’s Club over on Mulberry Street. ■ The Frackettes are known for their performance protests of the natural gas fracking in Denton, but now anti-fracking activists have their own logo. Designer Courtesy image/Lance Irwin Lance Irwin The Frackettes now have a logo by deflipped “HB40” signer Lance Irwin. upside down and anchored it with a gas mask. Spooky. If you haven’t already seen it on a T-shirt, wait a day or two. ■ CD Tex Radio listed musician Sara Hickman, a UNT alumna, as having the most downloads from its broadcast of her song “Moth to a Flame” last week. CD Tex is an online radio program that streams Texas, Red Dirt, country and Americana music. ■ Oh, hey, the cops around here still can’t seem to park legally on East Hickory Street. This time, though, the offending officer or officers were from the Mansfield Police Department. Denton DJ Yeahdef (nee Joey Liechty) on Reddit pointed out parallels between the parking situations in Portsmouth, N.H., and on our own East Hickory. NYC comedian Eugene Mirman’s latest special (Vegan on His Way to the Complain Store, streaming on Netflix) details how he got fined for parking incorrectly in the quaint New England city — for backing into a spot, which is against the not-very-wellpublicized rules there. He took out his fury by taking out a deliciously scathing full-page ad in a Portsmouth tourism mag. Hey, it could happen here — in a backward-kinda way, to a non-back-in-parking kinda guy. As for the actor who voices Gene on Bob’s Burgers: EuMir, you’re more than welcome in EaDo*.

■ Wally Campbell, the chairman of Denton’s Traffic Safety Commission and member of the Holler Time, has never seen Star Wars. Are we deporting people from Denton for this kind of betrayal yet? ■ These days, it’s no big surprise to see news of Jason Lee sightings around Denton. The actor and director has been friends with the members of Midlake for years now, and made a documentary about the local band. Lee recently stopped at Harvest House and Weldon’s Saddle Shop & Western Wear. He skipped us, though. We’re not hurt or anything. Really, we’re not. (Actually, we have our own Jason Lee at the DRC. He’s the staff artist who created the logo you see with this very column.) ■ Fort Worth/Denton punk rock band Radioactivity, Jeff Burke’s post-Marked Men outlet, has a new music video out for “Battered”/“Stripped Away.” Filmmaker Keven McAlester (the fellow behind the essential Roky Erickson doc, You’re Gonna Miss Me) shot the band playing the first two songs off their new Dirtnap Records album, Silent Kill, in a neon-lit storefront in a dying Dallas mall — Valley View Center, credited as “Valley Ridge.” ■ Oh, and two readers really wish we hadn’t published that item last week about those ‘Sugar Queen’ cantaloupes at the Denton Community Market. The local farmer sold out of his entire crop before noon, one rather grumpy melon fan told us. (Another shopper confirms the melons were cleaned out before 10 a.m.) Sorry? *EaDo is the moniker chef Tim Love tried to give to East Hickory, short for East of Downtown. Didn’t catch on. You got a better suggestion for what we ought to call Denton’s grand street? (And no fair calling it “drunk row,” guys.)

Parting shot “It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.” — P.J. O’Rourke, Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government Denton Dammit is an old-fashioned gossip column about people, places and things in and around Denton. Comedy braided into fairy tale

A

rtisan Children’s Theatre in Hurst opened its latest children’s show last week-

end. Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale visits an enchanted land with dragons, a handsome prince, an evil wouldbe queen, a really great hair stylist and that famous princess with the long, long, long hair. The musical retelling of the classic fairy tale finds the evil Lady Za Za determined to rule the kingdom by keeping the beautiful Princess Rapunzel (played by Sophie Mings and Parker Gerdes) trapped in a tower in the deep, dark, dank, dismal, dreary forest. It’s up to Sir Roderick and his hair stylist friend Edgar (who is on a quest to find the perfect head of hair) to rescue Princess Rapunzel and restore the kingdom with the help of a slightly neurotic Gypsy Woman (isn’t there one in every fairy tale?) and a tired but witty old dragon named Socrates. Performances are at 10 a.m. on Thursdays and at 10 a.m. and noon on Tuesdays and Saturdays through Sept. 5 at the theater, 444 E. Pipeline Road in Hurst. MOVIES

Accomplished action Cruise satisfies in latest mission By Jocelyn Noveck AP National Writer

There’s some interesting talk in the cleverly satisfying script of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation about the element of luck. As in: How much is luck a factor in the success of Ethan Hunt and his Impossible Missions Force cohorts? After all, in the last movie they merely saved us from a nuclear holocaust. Was it talent, work or dumb luck? Whatever you decide about that, let’s be clear about this: When it comes to Tom Cruise and his durability as an action hero, luck has little to do with it. The guy’s an action star extraordinaire, and it’s not luck or chance but work and smarts and yes, some swashbuckling derring-do that get him there. Whatever you may think of Cruise and his complex offscreen persona, let’s give him this: At age 53, he and his Ethan Hunt are getting more fun to watch. And they make Rogue Nation not merely a serviceable summer flick, but an entertainment well worth the ticket price. Let’s give kudos to a few other folks, too. Director-writer Christopher McQuarrie, like each director in the franchise, puts his own stamp on the proceedings. McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) does this with both a wry script that often makes fun of what’s happening, and some seriously entertaining action pieces. Also invaluable is franchise vet Simon Pegg as Benji, the wisecracking (and safe-cracking)

Welcome newcomers include Alec Baldwin, as a pompous CIA boss with deliciously dry delivery, and Rebecca Ferguson, making the most and then some of the obligatory female role. Ferguson is — get this — Swedish-born, named Ilsa here, and, yes, shows up in Casablanca, too. Rogue Nation begins with the scene you’re most likely to have heard about, because it involves Cruise’s own stunt work: The actor actually places himself

on the wing of an airborne jet, and then — why not? — lets his legs slip, hanging on by only his hands as the landscape beneath gets tinier and tinier. Why is Hunt on the wing? Well, that’s what can happen when you try to board a plane after takeoff. He manages to successfully remove a case of nerve gas canisters, but we’re just getting started. We soon learn that the IMF is being disbanded, and the timing is terrible. Hunt is onto something really bad: the Syndicate, a nefarious group of former

rtists. Designers. Actors. At the Creative Women’s Conference, the phrase echoed is: “Anything is possible.” On Saturday, local creatives of all ages will pack Denton’s North Branch Library for the 2015 Creative Women’s Conference, a collective of career-minded activists, volunteers and artists ready to tell the community how they can make a difference. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the free event will offer speeches, panels and workshops for all in attendance — male as well as female. “People always want to know how they can get from A to Z in a career or in their community,” event organizer David Doub said. “But obviously there’s the

Get coached to channel your imagination at Denton’s Creative Women’s Conference whole alphabet in between.” Doub said the event, which began last year, aims to focus on female creative minds in all walks of life, not just token stereotypes. “Sure, you have the typical ‘Women in Horror’ panel or ‘Women in Comics,’” he said. “But this is so we can celebrate all that take part in the creative industry.” Doub said he is often pressed by his male colleagues on what the conference can offer them. “We have everyone from artists to singers, actresses, models, directors, producers and more,” he said. “And then I’ll sarcastically say that there’s nothing you can learn from a woman — but that’s not

true. This event is open, so we have to remind people all they can learn.” The keynote speaker for the conference is Jennifer Hobson, who has worked as a dancer, choreographer, event planner and producer, Doub said. “She is the perfect example that there is not just one job you can do as a creative,” she said. “Her topic will be how to be a hero in your field and be a hero to yourself.” In addition to Hobson’s keynote talk, other speakers include professors from Texas Woman’s University and event contributor Halo Sama. “She has put a lot of effort into not only being here but through promotion and

thing where people could pitch ideas and earn funding,” he said. “But we always try to remember the core of what we’re doing. MOVIES Continued from Page 8 They vacation annually at the same cabin, but Rusty decides to shake things up by recreating his own childhood trek to Wally World. Everything is done all-out, and there’s a charm in that even when it doesn’t quite work. Rated R, 99 minutes. — The Associated Press

NOW PLAYING Ant-Man (★★1⁄2) Marvel’s Ant-Man is a film not quite sure of itself, like it’s wearing clothes a size too big. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang, a politically motivated cat burglar just released from prison who’s trying to right himself for the sake of his young daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Forston), and for paying child support to his ex-wife (Judy Greer). Lang is recruited by the original Ant-Man, scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), to succeed him in the suit. Along with his daughter (Evangeline Lilly), he’s conspiring to prevent a former apprentice (Corey Stoll) from unlocking the atomic secrets of shrinking down to bug size yet maintaining strength. Directed by Peyton Reed (Bring It On, The Break-Up). Rated PG-13, 124 minutes. — AP Inside Out (★★★★1⁄2) DisneyPixar’s animated Inside Out is a clever film about the importance of family — told through the thoughts of an 11-year-old girl, Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias). When Riley’s family

moves to San Francisco, her emotions have to put in some heavy work. Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) get sucked out of their spots in Riley’s brain, and they have to get back before she’s left with only Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) forever. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — Chase Whale Jurassic World (★★★) More than 20 years after 1993’s original Jurassic Park, scientists at the theme park lab have started getting creative, breeding bigger, tougher, meaner hybrids. The cast is rounded out with smart and gifted actors: Chris Pratt as Owen, a velociraptor trainer; Vincent D’Onofrio as one of his bosses; and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire, who’s high up on the chain at Jurassic World. Claire’s two nephews (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins) come to visit, and all hell breaks loose. Directed by Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed). Rated PG-13, 124 minutes. — C.W. Mr. Holmes (★★1⁄2) Ian McKellen stars as a 90-something Sherlock Holmes in post-World War II England in this period piece directed by Bill Condon. Holmes now spends most of his time reflecting on his last case, some 30 years past. He also takes time to interact with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), and her young son, Roger (Milo Parker). In a needless, pointless diversion, Holmes travels briefly to Japan. Amiable but slight film benefits from McKellen’s presence. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — Boo Allen Paper Towns Based on an earlier teen fave novel by The Fault in Our Stars author John Green, Paper

reg (Zachary Gordon) and his friend Rowley (Robert Capron) are back for the ride in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. The 2012 film screens this morning as part of Cinemark Denton’s summer movie clubhouse — a series of daytime second-run family movies especially for young audiences, with tickets only $1 apiece. In today’s 9:30 a.m. film, Greg is ready for the summer with pals Rowley and Roddy, but can he cope with his fears and let the good times roll at the pool and on the tennis court? And can he impress his crush, Holly? Rated PG, 94 minutes. Up on Aug. 5-6: The Nut Job.

Towns is part mystery story, part road movie and part pre-prom graduation romp. It hinges on the lifelong fascination the smart, semi-dweeby Quentin (Nat Wolff) nurses for his

across-the-street neighbor Margo (Cara Delevingne). Best friends and partner in crime as young kids, they’ve grown apart since Margo became hot and popular, so it comes

as a jolting surprise to Q when Margo dares him to take her out in his parents’ car to exact revenge on her

MOVIES Continued from Page 10 cheating boyfriend. And then she disappears. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Pixels (★1⁄2) The most believable element in Pixels is that alien videogame creatures could attack our planet. The core concept is clever — space aliens misunderstand a recording of old video games as a declaration of war, and send digital monsters based on those games to Earth as their army. But its execution in the hands of director-producer Chris Columbus and star-producer Adam Sandler is a mess. The few bright spots come from the music, celebrity cameos and special effects. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. — AP Southpaw (★★★1⁄2) Boxer Billy Hope (a bulked-up Jake Gyllenhaal) feeds off getting the pulp beat out of him before landing his final blow for a knockout victory. As the lightweight champion of the world, Hope has it all: fame, money, a beautiful wife (Rachel McAdams) and a daughter. When Hope loses everything, he falls deep into the rabbit hole of selfdestruction. To win his daughter and title back, he must learn resilience in the face of adversity. Southpaw is the most realistic, bone-crunching boxing movie to come along in a long while. With Forest Whitaker. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and written by Kurt Sutter (creator of Sons of Anarchy). The late, great James Horner (Braveheart, Titanic) composed a sublime score. Rated R, 123 minutes. — C.W. Terminator Genisys (★★★) At the start of Genisys, Judgment Day has happened. It’s the future, and soldiers are battling the machines. The world’s savior, John Connor (Jason Clarke), is now all grown up. His team takes out Skynet, but not before the machines send a Terminator back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). Connor sends Reese back to protect Sarah, but when he arrives, everything has changed. Sarah already knows about Judgment Day, a T-1000 (Byung-hun Lee) is currently pursuing her, and she’s got a T-800 Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) on her side. Genisys is about time travel, with alternate timelines and complex paradoxes, as well as plot holes and questions without answers. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — C.W. Trainwreck (★★★★) Amy (played by comedian Amy Schumer) loves booze, sex, one-night stands and sneaking out of her drunken-nightbefore prey’s house early in the morning before he wakes. She’s also a successful magazine journalist (Tilda Swinton plays her boss in one deliciously nasty role). For a chance at a promotion, Amy is assigned a story on a sports therapist (Bill Hader) who doctors famous athletes. As they spend time together for her story, she begins to fall for him. Will she change her promiscuous ways and finally settle down? As a team, writer-star Schumer and director Judd Apatow are a match made in heaven. As leading lady, Schumer crushes it. She’s a riot to watch. Rated R, 125 minutes. — C.W.
