Actress Tandy Cronyn performs the world premiere of the one-woman show The Tall Boy at the University of North Texas. The show opens tonight at the Studio Theatre and runs through Sunday.
‘Tall’ feather in UNT’s cap Tandy Cronyn stars in world premiere of one-woman play
U
niversity of North Texas theater professor Marjorie Hayes said the world premiere of The Tall Boy is a coup for the university and for Denton. “This is a real coup for us to get someone of Tandy Cronyn’s caliber — not to mention David Hammond and Simon Bent. This is really unparalleled,” said Hayes, who recently assumed the newly created position of managing director of UNT theater production. The Tall Boy is co-produced by actress Tandy Cronyn, director David Hammond and writer Simon Bent.
THE TALL BOY What: One-woman play starring Tandy Cronyn, written by Simon Bent and directed by David Hammond When: 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday Where: Studio Theatre in UNT’s Radio, TV, Film and Performing Arts Building, at the corner of Welch and Chestnut streets Details: Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. For tickets, call 940-565-2428.
UNT theater students are acting as the technical and running crew of the play. “Usually, our students are doing shows that are scripted,” Hayes said. “The research has been done by the time they get
to the play. For students, they want to know how playwrights arrived at the decisions they made. They get to see that process.” Based on “The Lost,” a short story by Kay Boyle, the play is about Annie, the American matron of a Bavarian displaced persons camp for children after World War II. Annie relives the stories of three boys — a Czech, a Pole and an Italian — who had been taken in by American GIs during the war. The boys adopted the soldiers’ accents, clothing and mannerisms. Cronyn performs all of the roles in the play. When the soldiers return to America, the three boys dream of going with them. Instead, they are placed at the camp. As Annie recalls the boys, she reveals American quirks and assumptions —
some of which will make audiences wince. Hammond is the former resident director for the American Conservatory Theatre and now serves as the arts division chairman at Guilford College in North Carolina. Bent is a top gun in the theater, and Hammond credits him as being a true dramatist. Cronyn, the daughter of Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, said the show is a testament to the resilience of children. Hammond said Bent’s script reaches deeper than that. “Everything that is in this story is here with us today,” Hammond said. “The story is really Annie’s. She’s American, and she takes for granted a certain sense of infallibility.” — Lucinda Breeding

Martin Clark, playing the role of Macheath, and Meng-Jung Tsai, as Polly, star in the University of North Texas production of The Threepenny Opera. UNT/Gary Payne
‘Threepenny’ still holds value
UNT opera resonates for modern audiences
Maybe you’ve snickered while watching an opera — the plaintive arias, the drawn-out deaths and the intricacy of the singing. The University of North Texas Opera Theatre’s current production avoids much of the pomp. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s Threepenny Opera is an opera for the Everyman, said conductor and musical director Stephen Dubberly. “The music is incredibly
fresh and timeless, and in a style that is very easy for contemporary audiences to understand,” Dubberly said. “The whole point of The Threepenny Opera is to poke fun at some of the conventions of opera as stuffy. This is opera for the working class — opera that anyone could understand. There is an immediacy of communication that is required, and that is a wonderful challenge for our students.”
Dubberly isn’t taking shots at the working class. He’s explaining why 21st-century audiences — with elections bought and sold, birth certificates and tax records in the shadows — will find much to enjoy in the summer opera. Threepenny Opera is about corruption, greed and the fallout from both. Innocent Polly Peachum marries the criminal Macheath — much to the disapproval of Polly’s similarly
corrupt father, who controls the beggars of London. Thieves, prostitutes and a corrupt police chief run wild. Weill and Brecht adapted Englishman John Gay’s 18thcentury The Beggar’s Opera to the 1920s Weimar Republic. The summer opera workshop productions — which use minimal sets and costumes — serve as intensive training opportunities for the students. Performed in German with
English supertitles, UNT’s production of The Threepenny Opera is set in London. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lyric Theater in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, on the north side of Interstate 35E at North Texas Boulevard. Tickets cost $10. For ticket information, call 940-369-7802 or visit www.thempac.com.

ince the release of her sophomore album, Dallas singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe returns to her old stomping grounds, Dan’s Silverleaf.
The Body Wins is also Jaffe’s second release through Kirtland Records. The album takes a decidedly more electronic turn that her uberfolksy singer-songwriter debut, Suburban Nature. In an earlier interview, Jaffe explained that the evolution toward bigger sounds (think chamber orchestra lite) and more buzzing and grinding electronic sounds wasn’t contrived. “Glorified High was buzzworthy enough to get handpicked as the first single on the record, and the album got a much-coveted place on National Public Radio’s “First Listen. Gone is the earnestness of Jaffe’s youthful-but-wise songwriting. As good as Suburban Nature was, with its intense hooks and confessional lyrics, The Body Wins is a techno-soaked album

NOW PLAYING The Amazing Spider-Man (###1/2) It's impossible to avoid the comparisons, so we may as well just get them out of the way early so we can move on. This reboot is pretty much different in every way from the staggeringly successful Marvel Comics-inspired trilogy that preceded it. Much of that has to do with the central performance from Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker as a misunderstood outsider, a rebel with a chip on his shoulder. That slightly arrogant attitude gives the whole movie a restless, reckless energy. Emma Stone is bright as ever as Peter's love interest, Gwen Stacy, with Rhys Ifans nicely underplaying his role as Spider-Man's nemesis. Directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Ruby Sparks’ title character (Zoe Kazan) might be a figment of writer Calvin’s (Paul Dano) imagination, or she might be a real woman the blocked novelist has dreamed of.
Perchance to dream ‘Ruby’ sparkles in depiction of fantasy brought to reality By Boo Allen Film Critic
Dreams come true in Ruby Sparks, the often brilliant romantic-comedy-fantasy from the filmmaking team behind Little Miss Sunshine. But in a project favored with a surfeit of talent, it is 29-year-old Zoe Kazan who stands out, not only for her highly imaginative script but also for her energetic performance. She would have made her grandfather proud. Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton directed, adding many small yet nuanced touches that elevate an already witty premise. It earns high marks for its originality, but Ruby Sparks

also works on many levels, examining such weighty subjects as free will, neglect, abandonment and, of course, dream fulfillment. The film rests on a fantastical idea, but unlike many overwrought films that fall apart under scrutiny, Ruby hangs in until the end, drawing in its audience while love blossoms just as surely as in a P.G. Wodehouse novel. Cast and crew combine to somehow ground their film, making it, if not believable, accessible and
consistently charming. Paul Dano plays Calvin, a 29year-old who wrote a blockbuster novel at age 19 but has struggled with writer’s block ever since. One night he has a dream about a woman. Later, after another dream, he commits her to paper, giving her a name, Ruby Sparks, a personality and a complete back story. Before he realizes what has happened, Ruby Sparks (Kazan) appears in the flesh and becomes a part of his life. From there, the film’s first half deals with verifying Ruby’s existence to others, including Calvin’s brother (Chris Messina), their New Age mother (Annette Bening) and her spacey boyfriend (Antonio Banderas). But Ruby is real, meaning she has moods, quirks and every other little trait that can
cause trouble in a relationship. So, Calvin tweaks his writing, trying over and over again to find the right balance in his flesh-and-blood fantasy. Faris and Dayton play it straight, allowing for no mugging or special-effects computer wizardry. They rely on the story and everyone’s straightfaced acceptance of Ruby. This approach allows for greater comedic effect when needed. At times, the story may strain, but in a film based on such a wild thought, the creaks are minimal. Dano looks pained for most of the film, while Kazan changes constantly, delivering a wide-ranging performance to complement the able assistance of a polished supporting cast, including underappreciated comic talents Steve Coogan and Aasif Mandvi.

Baby crazy No role models but plenty of looniness in Durang’s farcical take on parenthood By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

he cast of Denton Community Theatre’s Baby With the Bathwater has just committed a cardinal sin of theater. The small cast has had to stop rehearsal because most of the actors are laughing too hard to speak. “Get it out of your system now!” director Polly Maynard calls to Jason Lee, Heather Kenslow and Aaron Case. Lee is staggering over a table — though, to be fair, his character is drunk, not overcome with laughter. Kenslow is bent over, hands on knees, laughing with abandon. Case is next to her. He tries to pull himself together without much luck. He laughs at the ground, arms akimbo. He’s the actor responsible for the gut-busting. Crew members watching the rehearsal snicker and dart away. “Seriously! Laugh now because you can’t do that during the run,” Maynard says. Then she loses it, too. Baby With the Bathwater is a biting, bruising comedy by Christopher Durang (The Marriage of Bette and Boo, The Actor’s Nightmare). Staged with little more than borrowed costumes and props, elbow grease and Maynard’s considerable imagination, the comedy runs this weekend in the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center. “I think the show is so funny,” said Maynard, who played Bette in Bette and Boo, which Denton Community Theatre produced more than 10 years ago. Baby With the Bathwater follows John and Helen, a couple whose relationship seems to have been on the rocks even before they discover they’re expecting a baby. They have their child, then suffer psychological paralysis. Suddenly, they
“The play is pretty absurd. There’s no real logic to it, so you really have to find some kind of logic in it.” — Jason Lee, who stars as John in Denton Community Theatre’s Baby With the Bathwater find themselves unable to deal with the most basic issues of parenthood, such as naming their baby, feeding it and keeping it from harm. As time passes, the growing child becomes a bargaining chip between the strained couple. Finally, John and Helen’s pride and joy become a bit of a weapon between the warring man and woman. The auxiliary characters don’t seem to help John, Helen or their child, either: Cynthia, a woman who might or might not be John and Helen’s neighbor, loves their baby and can soothe the child — but she seems to be off her nut. A nanny hired to help has the morals of a congressional lobbyist, and a public school principal lives in her own reality. It sounds like the setup for a Shakespearean tragedy, but no. Maynard said she and the cast have had to look for that fine line between comedy and cruelty. “The play is pretty absurd,” said Jason Lee, who plays John and is a production staffer at the Denton Record-Chronicle. “There’s no real logic to it, so you really have to find some kind of logic in it.” It’s not a logical story, but Durang does have a story that is propelled through the See BABY on 10

Baby madcap situations that unfold with each passing scene. The audience will understand that the story belongs to the titular baby. Will the kid prevail in spite of his parents’ neuroses, and the dangerous quirks he inherits from both his impulsive mom and his henpecked, alcoholic father? Is it even possible for a child to grow up and be normal when that child’s family is so dysfunctional? Kenslow, who plays Helen, said the comedy has been a balm for diplomacy drawn thin. “Helen says some of the meanest things to John, and to everyone,” she said. “It’s cathartic to say these horrible things, because it’s not like you’d ever be so awful to anyone. You know, we all think these things in real life. But you’d just never say them.”

Pye TeSelle, the stage manager, said she’s watched as director and cast take the show’s in-your-face dialogue and mine it for real, human tensions. “Polly has taken the actors aside, and she’s told each one of them what their secret is,” TeSelle said. “I don’t know what the secrets are, and none of the
actors know what anyone’s secret is. But they all have something they’re hiding, and it’s been really interesting to watch how that’s changed the characters and their relationships.” Case said the absurdity in some scenes made it hard to memorize lines. “At a certain point, we had to go over every single line in the show and discuss what they meant,” he said. “It was really careful and really deliberate. The dialogue is pretty fast and there are so many jokes. You can’t miss one, because one joke sets up another one further along in the script.” The cast and crew seemed to agree that Durang taps into two themes in the show. For one thing, parenthood is a huge and important job with more pitfalls than a mom or dad can count. For another, our institutions — like education and child care — aren’t infallible. “It definitely mocks the things parents worry about,”
Lee said. “It makes fun of that anxiety parents feel, how they’ll sometimes get fixated on something that doesn’t end up being important to their kid.” “It doesn’t let the school system off the hook either,” Case said. “It really mocks the school’s failure to help students when something’s obviously very wrong.” By the end of the show, it seems that Durang has given everyone his portion of the blame. There is no obvious hero in the story. (Well, there might be a hero, but the cast and crew pleaded for it to be withheld so as not to spoil the story.) “I think Cynthia is kind of a hero,” said Bailey Atkinson, who plays the role of the offbalance neighbor who brings as much love to the story as she does danger. “She doesn’t do the right things, but she has good intentions, and she doesn’t do the wrong thing because she wants to or because it’s easy. She does the wrong things
because she makes mistakes.” Lee said that, for all the flawed characters on the stage, they aren’t just there as objects of disgust for the audience. “It doesn’t matter who you are,” he said. “You can identify with at least one of the characters. You’ll be able to empathize with someone you meet here.” Maynard said she expects some parents to nod knowingly along with the action. Baby With the Bathwater puts mixed messages on the stand for all to judge. “Parents don’t mean to, but they give their children a lot of mixed messages,” she said. “You want your child to be independent, but you want them to be careful. You want them to grow up to be their own person, but parents also want their children to fulfill their [parents’] dreams.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
