n 1988, provocateur and filmmaker John Waters started a franchise with a no-name cast and a tiny budget. He titled it Hairspray. The film launched the celebrity of drag queen Divine and actress and eventual talk show host Rikki Lake, while boasting the already famous Debbie Harry, Jerry Stiller and Pia Zadora. Denton Community Theatre stages the musical born from that film, opening the show this weekend. The musi-

cal braids R&B music into a socially conscious plot. In the end, Hairspray confirms the adage declaring music as the universal language. It’s 1962, and a plump teenager, Tracy Turnblad, dreams of dancing on Baltimore’s The Corny Collins Show. She lands a spot on the show, becomes a celebrity overnight and then campaigns to integrate the show — a tall order in racially segregated America. The musical retains Waters’ dramatic devices — such as casting a man to play Tracy’s mom, Edna. Clay White directs the musical, which stars Ashley Taylor Martin as Tracy and Jon Garcia as Edna Turnblad.

Gumbo Kings add a dash of New Orleans to local jazz series
he N’awlins Gumbo Kings, a scrappy Dixieland jazz outfit with musicians from Lake Dallas, Denton and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, return to the vaunted patio at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern on Sunday. The Gumbo Kings make reg-
ular appearances on the local venue’s jazz series, an ongoing and intimate concert featuring a generous number of ensembles from Denton. The concerts, which fall at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Sundays, are free. Visitors should note that they’re likely to find seat-
ing scarce and the pull of the downtown tavern’s food and drinks strong. What can the newbie expect from the Gumbo Kings? Freewheeling Dixieland jazz played expertly — but with the verve of the musical ramblers who make up the sextet. And at least
one of them is a faculty member in the wind division of the University of North Texas College of Music. Founder and band leader Steve Howard keeps the group steeped in the authentic, swinging songs of New Orleans, but shuffles in clever takes on not-so-
Dixieland favorites. The band released a benefit holiday album last year. Sweetwater is located at 115 N. Elm St. Coming up on Tuesday: the Mike Steinel Quintet.

The empress wears no clothes Cash flow blinds nouveau riche couple to reality By Boo Allen Film Critic
Something is indefinably unlikable about Jackie Siegel, the title character in the macabre new documentary The Queen of Versailles. She seems nice and is kind to children and small animals. But Jackie exudes other qualities that dwarf any positive impression she might make. And if 43-year-old Jackie is a troubling figure, documentary filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (Thin) also wants you to consider Jackie’s husband, 74year-old David Siegel. Greenfield mines her documentary’s fortuitous timing. She originally planned her film around this couple when they were media darlings who were starting construction on what would be the largest private home in America. The Orlando, Fla., showplace would cost around $100 million and would reportedly resemble King Louis XIV’s famous palace outside Paris. But much tackier. Greenfield originally picked the couple up when David’s successful time-share company, Westgate Resorts, was doing extremely well. He sits for interviews, quietly droning

David even claims he “got disorienting and hard to follow at first — until you realize it’s really about drug addiction. George W. elected,” but then refuses to say how he did it. But then comes the financial downturn in September 2008, and David’s empire starts to crumble. Greenfield stays with the Siegels through their fall. On the way down, David, not surprisingly, becomes more reclusive. But Jackie, still caring for her eight children, seems to retain her seeming obliviousness to life as the necessary downsizing begins.
David’s grown son Richard works for his father at Westgate, but admits: “It’s always been a business relationship. … We’re not close.” Jackie, no Mother of the Year, ends up taking her limousine to MacDonald’s before going home to a house left filthy by staff layoffs. A pet lizard lies dead because of neglect, and dog poop litters the floor. The house, made a disaster because of Jackie’s irresponsibility, indicates the fantasy
world the Siegels continue to inhabit. The garishly buxom Jackie prances around in her teeny shorts, hands on her hips, forever posing like the beauty pageant contestant she once was. David seems to work hard, even when facing disaster. Jackie may be the queen of this Versailles, and David its king, but, as duly chronicled by Lauren Greenfield, they will never be mistaken for royalty.

Stella in a smaller venue, in that I don’t want to get out of my realm, or get in over my head and get into a situation where I’m owing people money.” This year marks the second of Stella Fest, a reference to both the film Detroit Rock City, in which female disco fans are labeled “Stellas,” and to Sundress’ song of the same name. “We never play that song anymore,” McAdams said. Stella Fest 2012 boasts 21 bands. Darlings of the Dallas music scene True Widow headline on Friday night. Austin outfit Ringo Deathstarr headlines Saturday night. McAdams said the main stage is Hailey’s stage, with a side stage set up next to the sound booth. “The bands are going to play 30-minute sets — boom, boom, boom, boom. Back-toback sets,” he said. “While one band is setting up, another is playing. You don’t have to walk anywhere to see your next act. You literally just do a 180 and you’re set. And there’s a bar nearby. I think it’s a good setup.” McAdams, who moved from Denton to Austin a few months ago, said he’s pleased the headliners wanted to be part of the festival. out of Dallas with its somber rock, complete with ethereal vocals and fuzzed-out guitars. The band makes the kind of music that helps tell the story of modern-day vampires. Vocals are distant and aching. Guitars, bass and drums suggest a trudge through the sticky shadows. Right before True Widow’s performance will be Sundress, in the band’s first show back in Denton. “We’re kicking off our East Coast tour with the festival,” McAdams said. Sundress released a selftitled EP a year ago and immediately touched off buzz. McAdams, bassist Drew McCary, guitarist Kennon Talley, keyboardist Jim Harrington and drummer Derek Kocich have
all graduated from college, and some have left Denton. “That first tour we went out on the East Coast, and it was a rough tour, but I think we all felt like we made the most of it,” McAdams said. And the band did get a lot out of the tour, most especially management by Gold Mountain Entertainment (Nirvana, Beck). Sundress also picked up the Windish Agency to do its booking and a lawyer. “That was our first time out of state and we got all those things covered. I think we’re seeing the benefit of it just now,” McAdams said. “As a band, you have to do a lot to get management and a booking agency, and you can do one thing to screw it all up. It definitely was a big sigh of relief for us.”
The only achievement left for Sundress in terms of representation is a record label. “It’s not the ’60s anymore, where a band could hook up with a label before touring,” McAdams said. “A label now wants to know if you can do the tour, if you can handle the abuse, before they take you on.” Saturday’s headliner, Ringo Deathstarr, is murky rock with goth leanings. The three-piece shrouds vocals in thick reverb and thudding drums. The headlining acts at the fest could be described as moody deluxe. McAdams said the lineup is a cornucopia of Texas music. “The way I look at it [the fest lineup] is that it’s more progressive in sound than the typical Denton folk scene,” he said. “We want the students moving

08 09 12 Long-married couple Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) realize they need to be shaken out of their routine in Hope Springs. Columbia Pictures-Sony
Lovingly done By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
Here’s how surprisingly effective Hope Springs is: It will make you want to go home and have sex with your spouse afterward. Or at least share a longer hug or a more passionate kiss. You don’t have to be married for 31 years like the stuck-in-arut couple Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play to feel inspired by the film’s message about the importance of keeping your relationship alive. It sounds like a cliche because it is a cliche, and more: It’s a cottage industry, one that’s launched countless afternoon talk show episodes and shelf after shelf of self-help books. And yet Hope Springs unearths some quiet and often uncomfortable truths. The first produced script from television writer and producer Vanessa Taylor (Alias, Game of Thrones) explores the complicated dynamics that develop over a long-term relationship with great honesty and little judgment. What looks like a standard rom-com turns into
Hope Springs Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. Now playing.
something akin to a contemporary Ingmar Bergman film. The performances from Streep and Jones go a long way toward elevating the rather straightforward direction from David Frankel, which includes some painfully literal musical selections and a few hokey comic situations. Frankel also directed Streep in her withering, Oscar-nominated performance in The Devil Wears Prada. But stylish magazine editor Miranda Priestly wouldn’t be caught dead in the sensible ensembles that Streep’s character here, Kay, wears and sells at a mall chain store for middle-aged women. Her wardrobe is one of many ways Hope Springs depicts a safe, suburban Midwestern life vividly and without an ounce of mocking.
Film about stuck-in-the-rut couple shines with honesty
Kay and her husband, Arnold, live in a comfortable home in Omaha, Neb. Their children have grown up and moved out, leaving them to settle into a drab routine. She cooks him bacon and fried eggs every morning, which he eats at the kitchen table. A quick kiss on the cheek and Arnold is off to work at his accounting firm. When he comes home, dinner is waiting for him. Afterward, she cleans up while he dozes off in the recliner watching the Golf Channel. Then they head upstairs to go to sleep — in their separate bedrooms. And it’s been this way for years. Tired of the sexless complacency, Kay insists one day that she and Arnold take part in an intense, one-week couples’ therapy session. In Maine. Arnold grudgingly agrees to join her in the idyllic New England hamlet of Great Hope Springs, but once he sits down on the couch, it takes a while for him even to consider opening up to the soft-spoken but persistent Dr. Bernard Feld (Steve Carell, playing a solid
straight man to allow the two stars to stand out). The therapy scenes are just exquisitely acted and paced, with body language and slight facial gestures that speak volumes. The silences provide tension and intimacy, but once these two do begin answering questions, they reveal regrets and resentments, yearnings and fantasies they’d never dared to speak aloud before. Arnold is perpetually exasperated and emotionally closed-off but he’s convinced himself he’s content; Jones is doing his patented, humorously gruff persona but with some eventual vulnerability that provides shading and depth. And Streep is just … well, she’s Meryl Streep. Lovely, slightly naive and goofy and always so accessible, she never has a moment that feels forced or false. Kay longs to be loved desperately — and yet, she also may bear much of the blame for the state of her marriage. Without a single special effect or explosion, Hope Springs is the unexpected summer movie with real punch.
