enton Community Theatre closes its run of the oh-so-pink and incurably hopeful Legally Blonde this weekend. The musical comedy is a buffet of Americana. There’s a bevy of buxom sorority sisters sporting Pinterest-worthy hair (read: long and meticulously messy), dance numbers so buoyant they’re feats of athleticism and a libretto that sacrifices none of the original film’s (like totally) California-speak. Director Clay White lets Kristi Smith carry the show as the perennially perky Elle Woods — a strenuous job that requires the actress to blaze from scene to scene (and what
D
‘Legally Blonde’ ends run on Sunday seems like three shows worth of costume changes) in more than one pair of sky-high heels. He stocked the stage with energetic young performers who flesh out the winking script with plenty of heart, and one pretty convincing Jamaican Patois.
Legally Blonde is based on the 2001 blockbuster film starring Reese Witherspoon. Elle is a Zeta Nu sister with Malibu Barbie good looks and eyes for only one fraternity dreamboat: Warner. Elle is all set to start picking china patterns for her

gotta-happen nuptials when Warner dumps her. Warner insists he can’t marry Elle. If he wants to be a senator by the time he’s 30, he needs “a Jackie, not a Marilyn.” Stunned and beyond heartbroken, Elle decides to follow Warner to Harvard Law School. Maybe a makeunder (from bombshell to attorney-chic) will show the one who got away that she might be a bubbly blonde, but she can be serious. The musical by Laurence O’Keefe, Nell Benjamin and Heather Hach is suitable for all ages. Jaqueline Butt is the production’s choreographer, and Rebecca Lowry is the musical director and pianist. Derek Whitner and Victor Newman Brockwell designed the costumes.

Denton craft brewery Armadillo Ale Works will tap the first public kegs of its WunderMelon Kolsch beer at a release party at Oak Street Drafthouse.
Seasonal special Local brewer to unveil WunderMelon at Oak Street Drafthouse Armadillo Ale Works is perfectly aware of what day it is. It’s a dog day of summer. There’s only one thing to do: pop a top and throw back a beer made especially for the season. The Denton craft brewer will tap its first public kegs of WunderMelon at a release party at 7 p.m. Friday at Oak Street
Drafthouse and Cocktail Parlor, 308 E. Oak St. Kolsch beers are typically fermented warm and conditioned cold. They usually pour with a bright, clear yellow and boast fruity flavors. Foodie premonitions might pair Armadillo’s kolsch with grilled tilapia and a veggie roast — maybe some
squash, zucchini and peppers on a skewer. The brewery is conscious of the temperatures and social habits of its hometown, so bets are that WunderMelon will drink lightly and season the palate for supper without straining the waistband of your jeans.

OPENING FRIDAY The Expendables 3 The mercenary team known as the Expendables face off against a former member who went rogue and was thought to be dead. With Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas and Jet Li. Written by Stallone, Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt. Directed by Patrick Hughes. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — Los Angeles Times
NOW PLAYING Get On Up (★★★★) Chadwick Boseman, who was impressive as the dignified Jackie Robinson in 42, is electrifying as James Brown in Tate Taylor’s new biopic. And just as Brown, in life, upstaged pretty much everyone — including his bandmates, the Famous Flames — Boseman does that here. Tate and talented screenwriters Jez Butterworth and JohnHenry Butterworth jump around in time, ditching chronology for a thematic approach. It can get confusing, but it keeps us on our toes. In the end, we have a portrait that is not uniformly positive — Brown was too complicated for that — yet falls mostly on the kinder side. With Dan Akyroyd, Viola Davis and Nelsan Ellis. Rated PG-13, 138 minutes. — The Associated Press Guardians of the Galaxy (★★1⁄2) This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. The problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super), is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a bitterly sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his sidekick, a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). The warm spirit of Guardians owes much to Pratt, the guileless, formerly doughy Parks and Recreation star; his casting is inspired. But the film is terribly overstuffed and many of the jokes get drowned out by the special effects. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — AP Hercules The mythical Greek hero Hercules leads a band of mercenaries to help end a bloody civil war in the land of Thrace and return the rightful

Worth taking a look ‘The Giver’ benefits from screen adaptation, direction By Boo Allen
Big Brother is alive and well in The Giver, a science-fiction fantasy with plenty to offer young audiences. Adults, too, might appreciate the democratic pleas for individuality and free thinking. The surplus of themes originates with Lois Lowry’s hugely popular novel, still on best-seller charts. Scriptwriters Michael Mitnik and Robert Weide wrestle to coordinate the themes around a coherent plot that mostly avoids condescension or mawkishness. Philip Noyce’s sage direction also deserves much credit. The conflicts and dramas could have
become awkwardly transparent, but for the most part, remain serious and thoughtful, even if delivered through the unclouded eyes of youth. The Giver takes place in a sterile future, vaguely reminiscent of other surreal, otherworldly films. The minimalist settings complement the heavy dose of computer-generated sets and settings. In this future, everyone appears the same: near-robotic, with a loss of most human emotion. Love, family ties and memories of what happened before this society originated remain foreign concepts. Young people graduate from their childhood to take a position helping society, all led by
their elders, with the bossy Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) most prominent among them. In this often Kafkaesque world, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) lands a seemingly plum job of becoming the community’s sole “Receiver,” meaning he alone will experience memories and learn history from The Giver, played by Jeff Bridges as if he were The Dude 20 years later. Of course, this means Jonas will gain the knowledge that not all emotion is bad, and that the the world can be full of both good and evil. Noyce deftly mixes contemporary images to flood Jonas’ brain, a constantly changing amalgam that captures the
king to his throne. With Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes. Directed by Brett Ratner. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — LAT The Hundred-Foot Journey (★★★) Adaptation of Richard Morais’
novel about an Indian family opening a restaurant in a French village. Besides the always delightful Helen Mirren and the entertaining Indian actor Om Puri, it has the absurdly good-looking couple of Manish Dayal, as a gifted young Indian chef, and
Charlotte Le Bon, as the gorgeous sous-chef who teaches him the joys of haute cuisine (and not much more — this is a PG-rated movie). It also has a script by the talented Steven Knight, and a score by Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire).

zeitgeist of living today. Noyce takes a chance that pays off when rendering Lowry’s vision, filming a large part of the story in black and white, sepiatoned hues. Only when Jonas experiences something magical, or dips into his conjured-memories, or leaves his cocoon-setting entirely, does the Oz-like color change take place. Noyce restricts the puppylove element somewhat, making the film surprisingly palatable to adults. The laughs are loud, lewd and low in Let’s Be Cops, a spoof of cop “buddy pictures” that is pretty much the definition of “an August comedy.” The last month of summer is typically a dumping ground for titles studios don’t have high hopes for. Sometimes, that’s because of the lack of marketable stars. Sometimes, they’re just too hard to market period. And sometimes, if they’re comedies, it’s because the belly laughs are few and far between. All apply here. Jake Johnson of TV’s New Girl is paired up with another generation of Wayans — Damon Wayans Jr. — in this farce about two Ohio losers losing their way through Los Angeles, a tough place to be a single guy with zero status. Justin (Wayans) is a meek and mousy video game developer who is so passive that he gives off a feminine vibe. Ryan (Johnson) is an ex-jock who once quarterbacked for Purdue, but now spends his days roughing up kids in pick-up games on a local playground. Nobody gives either of these guys a second look. Justin’s cop-centric video game may have been rejected by his bullying boor of a boss, but the police gear he has around the house is handy to have when he

“Let’s Be Cops” stars Jake Johnson, left, and Damon Wayans Jr. might be the only ones laughing in the theater. and Ryan want to drop in on an alumni “costume” party. People there mistake them for police. Women eyeball these manly men in uniform. And Ryan, who used to feel the love of the crowd, gets hooked. “Let’s be cops!” Next thing you know, they’re walking the streets, in uniform with fake guns and fake name-
tags — Justin is “Officer Chang.” The cute waitress he’d like to reveal his true identity/sexuality to (Nina Dobrev) checks him out, so he’s in. But Ryan is way in — trading his battered ’80s Camaro for an eBay police cruiser, adding decals and lights, boning up on police procedure, listening for real police calls on a scanner. “The plan is we control the
situation,” he growls. “That’s what the YouTube video says!” Things get more and more out of hand, from domestic disturbances that turn out to be spirited sorority girl brawls, to tangles with the Russian mob. The psychotic head mobster Mossi (James D’Arcy) is not amused by “the new sheriffs in town.”
Co-writer/director Luke Greenfield (Something Borrowed) lets what few laughs there are in the script land. Johnson’s timing is sharp, and Wayans has that Wayans way with dopey under-reactions to crazy situations. Ask that raging sorority girl her name. “Precious.” “Not your gang name. Or your stripper name. Your real name.” The pairing of these two sometimes works, but Wayans has more of the name and the look than the edge or charismatic comic spark of his dad or his dad’s funnier family members. Johnson has made a number of smart indie film choices that allowed him to shine — Drinking Buddies, Safety Not Guaranteed. This one is far more conventional and seriously short of zingers. “What’s the worst that could happen?” The answer to that is, you could end up in a summer comedy that’s barely funny enough to warrant — ahem — release in the summer.

Roughed up by thugs, Lucy suffers blows to the abdomen, and the drug starts leaking into her system — enhancing her brain capacity and leaving her with only 24 hours to live. She heads to Paris to meet Professor Norman, an expert on cerebral capacity (Morgan Freeman), and simultaneously, she’s trying to recover all the drug packets, with the help of a police detective (Amr Waked). And this is where it gets really weird. At a certain point, the best strategy may be to just sit back, listen to the pounding music, admire those bright colors, and just shut that brain down entirely. Director Luc Besson knows his way around a camera, and you can argue about the merits of the storyline. “That’s the kind of music I play,” Richards said of doing a fair or rodeo concert. “I think I play music people can dance to. That’s kind of what we’re known for in Texas.” That, and a solid radio presence. Richards said his first three singles from last year’s All About the Music have had top-10 chart showings in Texas. Those include “She’s Cold as That Beer She’s Drinkin’” and “I’ll Have Another,” and “Never Gonna Hear It from Me” clocked in as the Texas Music Chart’s No. 64 song of 2013. Richards said he’s booked more than a dozen full-band shows for August. Last week took him on an arc through Conroe, Austin and Roscoe, then up to Durant, Oklahoma, for a radio show. “We’ve been spreading out and doing well,” he said. “It’s a slow process.” Earlier hits include “Red River Runaround,” “They’ve Never Been to Texas” and “I Can Party When I Need To.” The liner notes for 2004’s Between These Lines included an endorsement from George Jones. As it turns out, Richards has left three-year gaps between each of his five albums. “It takes me awhile to gather up the songs,” he said. “I like to make the whole album good from start to finish. “I could turn out a couple songs in a month. That’s quite a bit for me. I don’t write that much anymore.” Richards said he doesn’t feel a need to increase his output. “It’s just hard to come up with something that’s really good that hasn’t been done before,” he said. “I could write a song about floating the river every day, but I think people are kind of tired of that.” He also doesn’t have to produce a whole album’s worth of brand-new material each time. “I’m always kind of digging back into my catalog. When I wrote for Curb [Records], I had a couple hundred songs,” he said. So between the new tunes he writes, the ones he’s already written that his fans haven’t heard yet and other writers’
