afe Du Luxe is celebrating another year in business with its third Birthday Bash on Saturday. Festivities are slated to take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the restaurant at 3101 Unicorn Lake Blvd. Throughout the evening there will be a half-priced special on all food and drink purchases, live music, free coffee and tea, cupcakes and limitededition T-shirts for every 10th customer. Cafe Du Luxe, owned by David Carles and Jana Etheridge, opened in July 2009 as a coffee and wine cafe. It was originally designed as a franchise prototype, Carles said. In the last three years, he said, they’ve built a strong, loyal and growing customer base. He described the business’s first three years as exciting, gratifying and challenging. The biggest change to Cafe Du Luxe in that time, Carles said, was how “we perceived ourselves and what we offered

is an opportunity to celebrate the cafe’s accomplishments and its customers. “It helps us to give back to the people that have been loyal to us,” he said. The cafe is known to many as Denton’s best-kept secret, Carles said, but now, “We’d like the secret to get out.” — Britney Tabor

exas Woman’s University art professors invited artists they admire to join the School of Arts’ biennial exhibition “Combinations.” The show opens Aug. 27 in the East and West galleries in the TWU Art Building, at Oakland Street and Pioneer Circle. Faculty members invited artists who have influenced their work, artists they’ve shown with before and artists who have mentored them to submit work to the show. The show features an array of media — traditional painting, experimental video, sculpture — and gives visitors a broad view of the scope and variety of art being done by the faculty and guests, both in the community and in the classrooms. The exhibit runs through Sept. 20. A reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 4. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday when the university is in session. Danny Rush and the Designated Drivers are sure to play some choice tracks from the band’s latest album, Brown and Blue, on Friday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios.

Danny Rush’s latest keeps it quiet

D

anny Rush and the Designated Drivers might tie one on during the band’s gig Friday night at Rubber Gloves. If not, the audience will be buzzing on the slow, smooth music the band makes under the leadership of Denton’s Daniel Folmer — even if it is occasionally is a bit behind the beat. Danny and the Drivers just released the alt-country fulllength Brown and Blue. You can take the album a number of ways. You could take it as a songbook written — in longhand — by a chivalrous country gentleman who is doing his best to aim his anger at the one who left him rather than at the culprit: the narrator’s recurring emotional impotence. Brown and Blue could also be heard as poetry by a guy

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

who is able to fixate fully on more than one object of affection, but is useless at keeping secrets. It’s just as likely that the album continues Folmer’s adroit way of giving country music relevance to those who don’t love the form. Song by song, Brown and Blue is a refreshing take on the tearin-my-beer country ballad. This time Folmer and his buddies demolish every particle of slide-guitar sentimentality — the kind that can take down a folk outfit — and keep just what each song calls for. In “Without You,” the slide is as spare as an upright bass and the keyboard is restrained and imperfect. “Brakeman” finds our narrator playing the part typically occupied by a

woman, with the hero of the story in an empty kitchen, singing: “I made dinner for the both of us and ate it all alone/And I won’t be your butler anymore.” Folmer uses his signature soft tenor. Band members Justin Collins, Chris Garver, Tony Ferraro and Taylor Sims never force their way in, but fill in the brushstrokes that make Brown and Blue, the title song and the album, a needed wellspring of quiet. Quiet, but neither affected nor schmaltzy. The harmonies are as easy as the ensemble. If you need to come down a little from the Kyle Park show at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, Danny Rush and the Designated Drivers are just the ticket. Sounds like: all of your depression and anxiety plated in smooth chrome, or the act

on a bill between the Hope Trust and Don Williams. Details: Danny Rush and the Designated Drivers, Gentlemen Rogues, Ice Eater and Del Friendo play Friday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Friday, and the headliner goes on around midnight. Cover is $7 for those younger than 21, $5 for ages 21 and older. On the Web: http://daniel folmer.bandcamp.com I Hot tip: One of Denton’s most influential folk musicians, Chris Flemmons, will headline at Dan’s Silverleaf tonight with Tony Ferraro and Baby Lemonade. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the music starts at 9 p.m. Cover is $5. Dan’s is located at 103 Industrial St. — Lucinda Breeding

The Imposter recounts the hard-to-fathom events surrounding the mysterious return of Nicholas Barclay, who came back home to Texas after disappearing three years earlier from his San Antonio home. The documentary opens Friday.

A study in delusion Film tells story of Texas boy lost and mysteriously found By Boo Allen Film Critic

In summing up everything that took place during the events seen in The Imposter, a perversely entertaining new documentary, one of the main participants nails it. She says: “It was starting to get ridiculous. The Imposter examines a bizarre series of events that occurred mostly in the 1990s. Why it is just now grist for a full-length documentary might be because no one found a way to tell the story. Documentarian Bart Layton tackles the subject of the disappearance of Nicholas Barclay, although he cheats by using frequent re-enactments. But that’s almost understandable because, at the time, no one could foresee the consequences of Barclay’s disappearance and his miraculous reappearance — of sorts. Thirteen-year-old Nicholas Barclay left his San Antonio

home in 1994. Maybe it was after an argument with his mother and maybe not. Among many other things in the documentary, that fact remains fluid. He eventually became one of the country’s many missing children, sought out by authorities. From this period, Layton includes some still photos and a few home movies from Nicholas’ mother, Beverly Dollarhide. Three years later, someone purporting to be Nicholas turns up in Linares, Spain. This is “The Imposter, the man who sits in front of Layton’s cameras and relates the story of how he went missing (he was kidnapped and sexually abused, he says), how someone found him, and how he was ready to go back home. As the imposter tells his story, a viewer immediately

notices that, unlike the blond, blue-eyed Nicholas, this other Nicholas has brown hair, dark eyes, and speaks English with a French accent. But in 1997, Nicholas’ family just cared that he had allegedly been found and wanted to come home. His sister, the oft-interviewed Carey Gibson, speaks to him and then flies to Spain to retrieve him after authorities there tested him for authenticity. He returns, as The Imposter tells us, and before long, the FBI is called in, many questions are raised, and everything seems in flux. During it all, Gibson and Dollarhide look like they are indulging in wish fulfillment. At one point, Dollarhide says about that period: “My main goal in life was not to think. But if this isn’t Nicholas, where is he and who is the imposter? To answer those questions, a canny private investigator shows up, the FBI gets a tip from Interpol, and DNA and fingerprints come into play. The solutions may not be satisfying, but they are certainly entertaining.

North Texas State Fair ropes in Josh Abbott and ‘Small Town’ songs By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

Members of the Josh Abbott Band perform at the Real. Texas. Festival. in April in Mesquite. The Austin-based group will be in Denton next week for the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo. Dallas Morning News file photo

hen it came time for the Josh Abbott Band to put out its latest full-length album, Small Town Family Dream, the rising country band decided to get to work in a smalltown studio. That studio was Panhandle House in Denton. “We’d actually heard about it from some other bands,” said Preston Wait, the band’s fiddler. The Josh Abbott Band comes back to Denton to play at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo next Thursday, Aug. 23. The band plays the Budweiser Stage, the larger of the rodeo’s two music stages. Wait had praise for the local studio and its founder. “Erik Herbst is just a really great engineer; he gets such great sound. Denton is a good little music town,” Wait said. “We would have used the studio before, but we didn’t have the funds.” Caleb Keeter, the band’s electric guitarist, tightens the band’s link to North Texas by living in Denton when he isn’t touring with the Austin-based band. Small Town Family Dream was released on Abbott’s own Pretty Damn Tough label, and it manages to be a collection of just the kind of independent production that’s poised for broad appeal. In fact, Wait said, the band has been blowing up, with industry folks predicting that Abbott and his band might follow a trajectory similar to the Dentonborn Eli Young Band. Wait said the band’s success probably has as much to do with the group’s creativity and work ethic as anything else. “We really are a band, which was something you didn’t see in country music for a while, but are seeing now with the Zac Brown Band and Eli Young Band,” Wait said. “People appreciate that. They know who the drummer is and where he’s from. “We play together a lot. And I think that it helps that we all have our individual styles, even though we play together so much. We don’t rehearse all that much because we play three or four nights a week. When you play together that much,

The crowd watches some calf roping action at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo last year. you know what everyone is going to do and you know what everyone’s style is. It’s like you perform in your style, but you also perform as a band.” Wait said Abbott is the uncontested band leader, setting the creative agenda and writing songs, but Abbott expects the band members to chip in, and chip smart and proper. Wait’s fiddling is a good example. On Small Town, Wait contributes fiddle phrases that yodel consistently in a comfortable mezzo timbre. “We just mesh so well together,” Wait said. “Josh has really been up front with me and putting the fiddle out front. We go into the studio — before that, even — and he says we’ll do the fiddle here and work it there, which I appreciate. Our See ABBOTT on 10

Abbott last banjo player, who started with us, is back with us now, and it’s been a lot of fun to put him back into everything.” Small Town Family Dream dances on dangerous ground. Love of home and hearth, plow and plains are cliches of country music, and Abbott takes the pretenders to task for exploiting rural American life a little too easily. “Just about all of us grew up in small towns,” Wait said. “I grew up in Colorado, in a town that was maybe a population of 140 at the most — if that. The stuff you hear about on this album, that’s how a lot of us lived. I came home from school and got on a tractor, and when it got dark, you parked it. There was no girl in a bikini waiting for me.” With a cover of Adam Hood and Brian Keane’s “I’ll Sing About Mine,” the band offers a rebuttal to the glossy, romantic Nashville version of the family farm. These days, there are probably more urban cowboys rustling rush-hour traffic in SUVs than lads rumbling along crop rows on a Massey Ferguson 5400. The band keeps the album from tipping into cliche mostly through Abbott’s conviction (references like “winning state” and “faces may change, but last names never do” are touches of Southwestern culture that ring true) and the band’s rootsy riffs. Wait’s fiddle comes in sounding like a singer, easy does it. The banjo jangles, drawling just a touch, behind Keeter’s rocking guitar. In fact, Small Town plays like

a scrapbook of a rural community, if there were such a thing. The album opens with “Idalou,” Abbott’s hometown, which is small enough to foster a grown man’s sense of responsibility on a good year and up-close enough to stifle a restless soul during a bad one. “Touch” is a portrait of love discovered, unruly and insistent. “She Will Be Free” is a love letter to the one who got away. “Hotty Toddy” is a radio-ready tribute to a woman with values that fit the farm but with wiles that can handle the city (“She’s a Kentucky Derby and an Oxford grove.”) Abbott and band also cover Terry Allen’s “FFA” and “Flatland Farmer” and share the Lone Star-saluting “My Texas” with Abbott’s musical crush, Texas roots man Pat Green. The Josh Abbott Band has been through the fair before, and is bound to embroider its live set with gems like 2010’s “She’s Like Texas” and earlier records. Wait said the band is just as dedicated to entertaining audiences live as it is devoted to cutting records you can sink your teeth into. “We’ve always worked hard to be entertaining,” Wait said. “I would like to think we do that even on the recording side. The recording and the live side, they kind of go together as far as we’re concerned. “Watching the crowd is how I know if we’re working hard. If I don’t feel like I’ve connected or given something by the time I leave the stage, I don’t feel like I’ve done my job.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
