Denton Watson still riding with ‘Real Good Time’ Time IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK
Fair, rodeo end run this weekend marillo-born country music artist Aaron Watson will rock the crowds at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo on Friday — but he’ll rock easily. Watson’s 2012 album Real Good Time, his 11th record, opened at No. 9 on the Billboard country chart — an impressive feat given that he produced the record on his own label, HTK Records. Real Good Time landed in the top 10 two years ago alongside some pretty heavyhitters in the country music scene — Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan and the Zac Brown Band, to name a few. Watson still writes from the heart, which means he’s ever open when it comes to his heartaches, his happiness and his Christianity. The fourth and final single from the album, “July in Cheyenne,” is a tribute to Lane Frost, one of the most prolific professional bull riders to ever compete. The song references Frost’s career and his death at Cheyenne Frontier Days. Watson has

Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Frank (Michael Fassbender, center) and Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) are members of a band in “Frank.” Magnolia Pictures
Huge noggin gets in the way By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
‘Frank’ can’t downplay title character’s oversize head
ooking below the surface is mandatory for Frank, a strange new film that is unequal parts comedy, satire, allegory and fantasy. Or maybe it’s just something else entirely. What the film’s makers have in mind remains cloudy, whether it be uproarious laughs (which are few), or an introspective commentary on identity. Lenny Abrahamson directs Frank from a script from the irreverent team of Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan. The film’s absurd premise belabors reality, although it is reportedly based on a mixture of several people.
But the film’s crazy gimmick doesn’t stop the whimsical team from squeezing a final breath from the project for some kind of effect. Viewers might just need to jump in and accept the premise, if only for an hour and a half, to get anything out of the film. Domhnall Gleeson (son of Brendan) plays Jon, a young Irish musician who accidentally lands a job playing keyboard for a random rock band. When Jon arrives at his first gig, he meets the lead singer, Frank. Frank is a man who wears a large, fake, papier-mache head,
much like the fictional character at the helm of the Jack in the Box television commercials. Frank wears his big cartoon head until nearly the end of the movie. He showers in it, eats in it and sleeps in it. He does virtually everything in it. Frank’s fellow band members don’t make a big deal of his head. Everyone takes it in stride. And somehow, the well-known actor Michael Fassbender, not seen until near the end, condescends to remain inside the bobblehead. After Jon joins the band, they retreat to an isolated cabin to re-
cord an album of their awful music. Various conflicts play out, many with Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the band’s surly theremin player. Jon tweets on the band’s activities — messages also seen onscreen in an already hackneyed device that has recently gained cinematic currency. Eventually the band develops a small YouTube following, enough so that they are invited to Austin’s famous music and film festival, South by Southwest. They go, leading up to a pointless diversion that does little but play out the big-head

gimmick. When not squeezing said large noggin for effect, the narrative bogs down with little engagement. Perhaps Frank might be read as commentary on how we adopt other identities, feeling comfortable only when we are not ourselves. But it can also be read in other ways, or it can just be a pointless, shaggy-head story.

This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. The problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super), is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — The Associated Press The Hundred-Foot Journey ( ) Adaptation of Richard Morais’ novel about an Indian family opening a restaurant in a French village. Besides the always delightful Helen Mirren and the entertaining Indian actor Om Puri, it has the absurdly good-looking couple of Manish Dayal, as a gifted young Indian chef, and Charlotte Le Bon, as the gorgeous sous-chef who teaches him the joys of haute cuisine (and not much more — this is a PG-rated movie). Rated PG, 122 minutes. — AP Into the Storm A town is ravaged by deadly tornadoes while storm chasers try to obtain a once-in-alifetime shot in this found-footagestyle thriller. With Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies and Matt Walsh. Rated PG-13, 89 minutes. — LAT Let’s Be Cops Two rudderless friends dress as police officers for a costume party and enjoy their newfound authority, then get mixed up with real mobsters and dirty detectives. With Damon Wayans Jr., Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle and Nina Dobrev. Directed by Luke Greenfield. Rated R, 104 minutes. — LAT Lucy ( 1⁄2) Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a student of some sort living in Taiwan, and a few other unfortunates are forced to become drug mules. Roughed up by thugs, Lucy suffers blows to the abdomen, and the drug starts leaking into her system — enhancing her brain capacity and leaving her with only 24 hours to live. She heads to Paris to meet Professor Norman, an expert on cerebral capacity (Morgan Freeman), and simultaneously, she’s trying to recover all the drug packets, with the help of a police detective (Amr Waked). Directed by Luc Besson. — AP Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( 1⁄2) Like the first Transformers, this overinflated attempt to introduce the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arguably exceeds low expectations. The movie sticks fairly closely to its original comic book vision, and as fully realized flesh-and-blood CG characters, the turtles are impressive and almost always convincing. Leo, Raf, Michelangelo and Donatello are the result of a science experiment, trained in the sewer by their rat sensei, Master Splinter. The end of the movie is particularly frustrating, as the spectacle overwhelms the story. With Megan Fox, Will Arnett and William Fichtner. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman. A wide view shows Redwood Studios, where artists including Seryn, Chambers, Robert Gomez and Sarah Jaffe have recorded. “I wouldn’t say there is more demand than time for projects,” co-owner McKenzie Smith said, “but we are starting to book recording sessions further and further out.”
Plank by plank Studio built on musicians’ work ethic and dreams, tucked away in Idiots’ Hill By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
o call Redwood a DIY recording studio is almost an insult to the love and sweat owners McKenzie Smith and Joey McClellan put into the 1,200-square-foot space. Before the space smelled like the spicy cedar boards lining the walls, before antique-style string lights cast a warmth that can only come from Edison bulbs, and before the carefully placed photographs, prints and album cover art punctuated those cedar boards, the building was a mess.

It took nine months for McClellan and Smith to turn the sawdust-covered, junk-filled woodshop-turnedmotorcycle repair shop into what has become one of Denton’s most respected recording studios. On Tuesday, McClellan and Smith had to pose for photos fast — a group of musicians had booked the studio for 11 a.m. The latest customers to use Redwood Studios showed up 15 minutes early. Smith still laughs at his and McClellan’s ambition. Looking around at the space they renovated with the help of a few friends and McClellan’s contractor father, Smith recalls the pair’s plan to cover the walls with reclaimed pallet wood. “We thought it looked really cool.
It’s kind of worn, it has a lot of character,” Smith said. “We got two truckloads of pallet wood, and we thought, ‘Yeah, this should take care of most of this room,” where the console, Apple computer monitor and some instruments are kept. McClellan, the introvert of the two, snickered at the memory. “Yeah. We were so sure we had more than enough, didn’t we?” he said. By the time they had taken a reciprocating saw to the pallets to make uniform boards (and to cut through the threaded nails Smith said couldn’t be pulled out with the claw end of a hammer), McClellan said the stack of See REDWOOD on 10

Redwood useful boards was a tenth of the original truckloads. “After that, I said, ‘Joey, why don’t we just go to Lowe’s?’” Smith said. And that’s why just about everyone who walks through the door takes a deep breath and pronounces Redwood a smellgood kind of place. Smith and McClellan have known each other for years, and in 2010, McClellan, a guitarist, became a full-time member of Denton band Midlake. Smith is the band’s drummer. He and McClellan had also played together in Dallas band the Fieros when a previous drummer quit. “I was like, ‘Sign me up. I wanna play with Joey,’” Smith said. “We became musical cohorts and we got much closer just by playing music together.” Smith and McClellan said they started dreaming out loud about starting a recording studio. “I mean, we just started talking about how cool it would be to have own our own studio because we would be able to record projects that we wanted to do outside of the band,” Smith said. “And also record other artists. But obviously, starting a studio from the ground up was very expensive.” McClellan joined Midlake while he was living in New York — a big change from his days of being what Smith calls “a staple of the Dallas music scene.” McClellan said he and his wife had been thinking about returning to Texas when he started touring with Midlake. Smith married and started house-hunting, and a showing in Denton’s Idiots’ Hill area brought the Smiths to a house with a big backyard and a building. “I remember coming here and walking through the house and being like, ‘Yeah, I can see the potential here,’” Smith said. “We’d seen so many houses and when you’re about to buy a house, you start losing perspective fast, trying to figure out what’s important, what you want. We kind of did a walkthrough and we got out into the backyard and it was like, you got a whole other building out there.

There is no shortage of musical instruments available to artists who book time in Redwood Studios. “I guess the light went on and we left and I told my wife 30 minutes later ‘We need to go back and look at that house,’” he said. “We came back and took a walk-through and I said to my wife, ‘Do we need to make an offer? Do we need to do it?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah,’ and that was largely due to that space.” A private investor helped Smith and McLellan renovate the space and buy a secondhand console for the studio. A lot of the work was painstaking — particularly covering the ceiling above the exposed beams in the band area of the studio. “It was awkward and there
was so much dust,” McClellan said. “We’re always wiping everything down. I figure we’ll still be cleaning up the dust a few years from now. We’ve got it under control. But it’s a process.” Redwood opened in 2012. McClellan said he and Smith finished the renovation late in the night before the first act came in to record. Not long after, they hired house engineer Jordan Martin, also a local musician. Martin came highly recommended, McClellan said. “Hiring him was the smartest thing we’ve done,” McClellan said. “It’s a load off your mind to know that you can leave town to

tour and your studio is in good hands. He knows what he’s doing.” Since opening, the studio has been the choice of high-profile Denton bands. Kaela Sinclair recorded her debut record in the studio, and Seryn cut its second record there. Robert Gomez recorded Earth Underfoot. Chambers’ debut was made there, and on Tuesday former Denton musician Sarah Jaffe released her third studio record, Don’t Disconnect. Jaffe has a long association with Midlake, and toured Europe with them several years ago. “We’re really proud of the record we did with Sarah,” Smith said. “It’s a big deal.” McClellan and Smith said they consider Redwood to be somewhere between a really good home studio and a stateof-the-art studio outfitted with the latest and most expensive gear. They intend to add more quality gear — and Smith said a better door than the buildergrade sliding door enclosing the vocal room is also on the wish list. But the men said their priority for Redwood is serving the music and the artists who make it. “If you gave Van Gogh or Monet one small paintbrush and some low-quality paints …,” Smith said. “… I think they could probably do something pretty amazing with that,” McClellan finished. “I don’t think the equipment you are using is the answer,” Smith said. “I mean, there are some really terrible records made on the most expensive equipment in the world. And there’s a lot of really great records made on some really low budgets. Elvis Costello’s My Aim Is True, that album? I remember I loved how it sounded, and it was so interesting because I remember reading how it really was done on eight tracks in, like, one single room, like the band’s basically playing live. Everything, I think even his vocals were done live. “The recording technique was so simple. And the record sounds great. They had a great engineer and a great band and they were making great music.” Midlake made its first two albums in a living room on Oak Street on a very limited budget,
so Smith and McClellan understand how important it is to offer fair rates. What Redwood doesn’t have in gear, it makes up for in sweat equity, Smith said. And both men said they try to not put too much significance on gear. They appreciate the pristine studios designed by engineers, musicians and acoustic specialists — they wouldn’t balk at using that kind of space — but a studio’s tech isn’t what makes or breaks a recording, they said. “When we started recording earlier on,” Smith said, “we always put ourselves to a test of thinking: ‘Well, let’s say Radiohead came in and they had the same amount of equipment we had.’ We were blaming some of the problems we were having on ‘we just don’t have very good gear, we’re limited.’ And we’re like, ‘I bet you if Radiohead came in here, and they were stuck in this room with the same exact amount of equipment, they would make a good record. They would make something cool.” Smith and McClellan said they want Redwood to be part of Denton’s music and recording community. Both have a lot of respect for the other established studios in the area — Panhandle House, Echo Lab and Reel Time Audio. “There are so many studios in town and they all offer something different,” Smith said. “We want good equipment, have a good-sounding room. We want to have a nice place for people to record. It’s like living in a town where there is more than one restaurant. They do different things.” Smith and McClellan have plans for Redwood’s future. They plan to get a vintage RV so bands have a comfortable place to bunk. They intend to continue sprucing up the backyard so that producers, musicians and friends can take breaks (read: have a beer and a smoke around a fire pit). And then there is gear. And more gear, McClellan said. “When you open a studio, you don’t make a lot of money,” he said. And what they make will likely go right back into the studio. “We still have money to spend,” Smith said. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
