new exhibit in the Gough Gallery at Denton’s Center for the Visual Arts will feature photographs of the city from two viewpoints. “Denton Through Two Lenses: Walter Eagleton and Tom Judd” opens Sunday. In the exhibit, the two Denton photographers capture images of the city’s landmarks and structures as well as scenes from surrounding areas. Judd’s and Eagleton’s work will also be represented in another exhibition, “Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image,” running concurrently in the center’s Meadows Gallery. The exhibit — and the new book of the same title — features works by a number of artists, paired with poetry by Karla K. Morton. An opening reception for both exhibits will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 30, and will include a book signing with the artists featured “Passion, Art, Community.” “Both the exhibitions are Denton-focused,” exhibition coordinator Deanna Wood said. “We just wanted to have a show that tied together the theme of Denton.” “Denton Through Two Lenses” captures the diversity of things to do and see in the city, including images of an assortment of urban and undeveloped areas, Wood said. The exhibit include images of the Courthouse on the Square, North Lakes Park, the Campus Theatre, Old Alton Bridge, Ray Roberts Lake and the Greenbelt. Eagleton said his photos in the exhibit date back to 2007. “They are basically an artistic

look … at the beautiful art landmarks of Denton,” he said. Eagleton said his featured work is an “artistic interpretation” on the architecture and detailing of Denton landmarks and buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th century. The velvet fine art paper that the photographs are printed on
make them all look like art pieces, he said. Judd said his 16 images in the exhibit deal with views often overlooked, like North Lakes Park at sunrise and the Courthouse on the Square reflected on a window at the Downtown Mini-Mall. There’s interesting subject matter all
over, he said; it’s just a matter of training your mind to see it. “It’s just maybe a slightly different look of Denton than what people see when they first come to Denton,” Judd said. “It’s just a different take on some of those things that are in our town and right outside of it.” His featured images, he said, date back to 2006 and include The Tomato, the iconic pizzeria that once stood on Fry Street. “Denton Through Two Lenses” is on display through Oct. 28. Old Warhorse rides hard Local band mixes blues with grit and rock’s hard edges
O
ld Warhorse is a rough outfit. The Denton sixpiece swills fire and gravel and spits out both when it takes the stage. Expect roadhouse blues-rock hopped up on testosterone during the Friday night “Back to School Bash” at Hailey’s Club.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
The musicians don’t do spectacles on stage, but the intensity of their blues punch doesn’t suffer for it. Guitars pour on white hot (and sometimes raging) noise, the bass grooves hard and the drums beat like all get-out — and that’s just on the slower, laidback songs. When the Warhorse picks up its gait, get ready for a serious soul dust-up. In fact, if your hearing’s sensitive, bring earplugs. The band is a newer local outfit, established last year.

Come celebrate the
GRAND RE-OPENING
But members have paid their dues in bands like Pinebox Serenade and Spitfire Tumbleweeds, and Old Warhorse has been busy playing Dan’s Silverleaf and other Texas beer joints. Local university students who want to ring in the new school year properly can find a scene to match their intent at Hailey’s Club. Students be warned: Old Warhorse is a beer and whiskey band. Who’s in the band: Chris Considine, Kody Jackson, Patrick Newkirk, Chris Ott, Damian Sisca and Chris Welch. Details: Old Warhorse shares Friday’s bill with Tony Ferraro and the Satans of Soft Rock, H.I. Jr. and Hares on the Mountain. Hailey’s Club is at 122 Mulberry St. Doors open at 9 p.m., and cover is $5. Good with: the last, highoctane piece of summer break before a semester of calculus. Sounds like: ZZ Top drank a lot of Kentucky bourbon and is spoiling for a fight. With brass knuckles and brickbats.

an Francisco band Birds & Batteries’ latest release, Stray Light, is a hybrid album, according to member Mike Sempert. The band used “some hi-fi, tape and studio time mixed in with a lot of electronic production and home recording,” said Sempert, songwriter, vocalist and keyboard player. “As long as we’re making music that feels meaningful and excites us, we’ll just be putting out records and touring,” Sempert said, when asked about the band’s goals. “It’s actually pretty hard to think beyond this tour, just part of the myopic nature of the beast. I book our tours as well, so it’s definitely all-consuming. Shortterm, it’s just one mile at a time; long-term, I guess, to create a body of work that lasts.” Birds & Batteries plays Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Señor Fin and Chasing Kings open up the show, which starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $7. — Rachel Watts

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dania Ramirez play Manhattan bike messengers who get entangled in something sinister in Premium Rush.
‘Rush’ packs in adrenaline Bike messenger thriller amps up chase scenes By Boo Allen Film Critic
The non-stop new Premium Rush approaches pure cinema — visually daring and rarely bogged down by plot or dialogue. The premium of the title refers to the priority given to a package to be delivered, but it could easily be confused with the high of an adrenaline rush. The fine young actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this rush job, but he seems not to rely on his considerable acting skills but on something much tougher. That is, he
Premium Rush Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. Opens Friday.
spends almost the entirety of the film’s hour and a half on his bicycle, racing through Manhattan and all its frightening traffic. Director and co-writer David Koepp has been reported as saying that around 96 percent of Premium Rush is free of computer-generated effects. Keep that in mind while watching GordonLevitt as he darts in and out of traffic between cars, up on sidewalks, and through nar-
row passageways. Koepp even briefly tempts movie fate by filming under the city’s elevated trains, a hallowed ground ever since Gene Hackman’s mad car chase during William Friedkin’s 1971 classic The French Connection. Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a one-time Columbia University law student who dropped out in his third year to start life anew as a thrill-seeking bike messenger. One day, he takes a job delivering an envelope from Columbia to Chinatown, and it must be delivered within the reasonable rushhour time of an hour and a half. But as soon as he heads south through the crowded streets, a renegade cop
(Michael Shannon, playing menacingly to form) chases him down for the envelope. Meanwhile, a bike cop, for his own reasons, joins in the chase for Wilee. And to further muddy the scenario, Wilee’s girlfriend and fellow biker Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) jumps into the fray. To these elements, Koepp adds a sinister Chinese triad and then deftly juggles all these for a consistently moving thrill ride. Surely most if not all of Wilee’s scrapes, close calls, wrecks and bike tricks are artfully staged, but they succeed in ramping up the whiteknuckle tension. Premium Rush may be an empty package, but it is undeniably fun to watch.

But Stoney has always done real well for us, and he’s a super nice guy,” Carlton said. “I am very tickled to have him back.” Carlton noted that the band playing with LaRue, No Justice, will bring along fans of theirs as well. “We should see a good crowd for Stoney and No Justice Friday,” he said. LaRue said he plans on playing material from his latest album, Velvet, released a year ago, alongside See LaRUE on 10

tunes fans will recognize from his earlier years. “The crowd favorite seems to be ‘Oklahoma Breakdown,’” he said. LaRue said he doesn’t have a personal favorite, though. “I kind of don’t feel like I would write anything I wouldn’t like to sing on a regular basis. I don’t have anything I have written I hate [playing], and as long as I keep it fresh to myself, I probably won’t,” he said. Throughout his sets, fans scream and yell for him to play certain songs. “There are songs I do have to play, or I will be strung up if I don’t,” he said. LaRue doesn’t like to classify his sound, saying that it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, people will call it something. “In Europe they call it Americana, in Texas they call it Texas Red Dirt, in Oklahoma they call it Red Dirt. The common theme is Red Dirt,” he said. To him, his sound is a culmination of everything he has listened to from birth to now, including country, folk, rock and Americana. “All those ideas, I wouldn’t compare it to anything,” he said. “I wouldn’t know what to call it — certain songs … lend themselves to a genre more than other songs.” As far as his subject matter, LaRue said some of the songs are just talking about relationships, how one is dealing with themselves or with life, the ups and downs and back and forth. “The songs are so different, but the commonality, or theme, is just a life experience,” he said. As LaRue’s sets skew more toward the newer stuff to promote the latest album, fans hear music they haven’t heard before — songs that the musician hopes they’ll like as much as the more familiar tunes. “Whenever you create anything, you are throwing your soul out to them, so you don’t want them to stomp on it and spit at you, you want them to respond with a clap or a ‘woohoo,’” he said. “That’d be ideal, but hell, that’s what

everyone wants.” LaRue said he’s gotten positive reaction for the songs on Velvet, which he said is totally different from anything he has ever done. “It’s wiser — more years on the road than the initial [albums],” he said. “It looks at the idea of what
you think you love and what you think you want years later. Being able to say, ‘This is what I have, this is what I want.’” For LaRue — who has played music since he was 10 and professionally for 14 years, from his first and smallest gig for the bar staff for Wormy Dog Saloon in Stillwater, Okla., to venues in
Italy, Belgium, France and the Caribbean — the fair is not just another date on the calendar. “It’s never just another gig. childless couple mystically granted a test run at parenthood. Hedges assembled an impressive cast, led by Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as parents to a mystery boy (CJ Adams) who comes into their lives, and the actors buy into the story’s conceits wholeheartedly. But a movie’s in trouble when the characters are just as unbelievable as the premise. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP ParaNorman (##1/2) No one wants to tell 60 puppet makers that their months of toil were ill spent. But the frequently wondrous and whimsical visuals far surpass the disappointingly slipshod story of an 11-year-old boy named Norman (voiced by Kodi SmitMcPhee) who can see and speak to the dead. ParaNorman is from the
creators of 2009’s Coraline, and bears much of the same fantasy-horror spirit. It also has some of the comic elements of the British studio Aardman Animations (Wallace and Gromit). Norman’s uncle (John Goodman) bequeaths to him the duty of pacifying a witch that has haunted their town for 300 years. After failing in the ritual, Norman and an improvised gang flee from zombies. The running around town takes up much of the film. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — AP Sparkle In Motown-era Detroit, a talented young singer tries to balance a new romance with her manager, her family life and her ambition to become a star. With Jordin Sparks, the late Whitney Houston, Derek
Luke and Mike Epps. Directed by Salim Akil. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — LAT Total Recall In the future, a factory worker’s role-playing mental vacation as a super-spy goes awry, leaving him a hunted man and blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. With Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston. Directed by Len Wiseman. Rated PG13, 118 minutes. — LAT 2016: Obama’s America This documentary, directed by conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, looks at influences in President Barack Obama’s past and what the United States might be like in four years if he is reelected. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — TDMN

The Bourne Legacy (###) This fourth film in the Bourne franchise may seem heady and intentionally disorienting and hard to follow at first — until you realize it’s really about drug addiction. That may help as you compare it with the first three films in the series that starred Matt Damon. Jeremy Renner stars as Aaron Cross, who finds he’s the target of a legitimate threat when the supersecret government spy program he’s a part of hastily gets shut down. Turns out, Jason Bourne was not the only person who was given a whole new identity and transformed into a killing machine. With Rachel Weisz. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — AP The Campaign When a long-running congressman commits a public gaffe ahead of an election, two wealthy CEOs arrange for a puppet candidate to challenge him. With Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis and Katherine LaNasa. Directed by Jay Roach. Rated R, 85 minutes. — LAT The Dark Knight Rises (##1/2 ) Director Christopher Nolan directs the last of his three Batman films with Christian Bale again playing the dark knight. A villain (Tom Hardy) steals a nuclear weapon and threatens to blow up Gotham, while several other plot points play out in this overwritten opus. Anne Hathaway, as an undesignated Catwoman, and Marion Cottillard appear as eyecandy femme fatales. A mediocre movie, not bad — just not as good as earlier versions. Rated PG-13, 164 minutes. — B.A. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days An adolescent boy tries to survive summer misadventures in such fraught situations as swimming at the public pool and going camping. With Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris and Robert Capron. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — LAT The Expendables 2 After a seemingly routine mission goes awry, a band of mercenaries seek revenge against an adversary and stumble onto a global threat. With Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren. Directed by Simon West. Rated R, 103 minutes. — LAT Hope Springs (####) The first produced script from television writer and producer Vanessa Taylor (Alias, Game of Thrones) explores the complicated dynamics that develop over a long-term relationship with great honesty and little judgment. Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) live a sexless life in a comfortable Nebraska suburb. When Kay finally decides she’s sick of their complacent routine, she insists Arnold join her for a week of intensive couples therapy with a renowned psychologist (Steve Carell). Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. — AP Ice Age: Continental Drift (##1/2) There’s considerably less drift in the latest in a long line of lucrative cartoons from Blue Sky Studios and
their friends at Fox. It’s all sight gags and action beats, which tends to cover the shortcomings these assembly-line farces are infamous for. Manny the mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), Diego the sabertoothed tiger (Denis Leary), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo, always funny) and Sid’s Granny (Wanda Sykes) are adrift on an iceberg. That’s when they meet the pirates. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service The Odd Life of Timothy Green (##1/2) Adapting a short story by Ahmet Zappa (son of Frank), writerdirector Peter Hedges (Pieces of April) tries for old-fashioned wholesomeness only to flounder amid a well-intended but sappy tale of a
