She studied fashion design at the University of North Texas, and started working at the Dallas Apparel Market. Wells got connected through the market and started buying clothing. Billy Joe Shaver tips his cowboy hat during his set during Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic last year at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth. Jeff Lautenberger/ Dallas Morning News file photo
Honest living By Lucinda Breeding Staff Writer cbreeding@dentonrc.com
illy Joe Shaver has been writing what he knows long before young pups slung a guitar over their shoulder and made a fetish of all things authentic. It took six years for Shaver to make Long in the Tooth, a confession of his hearty appetites and an account of his diminishing mortal coil. “I did a live album at Billy Bob’s,” Shaver said in a recent phone interview, marking time until he had to board a plane to make his next tour date. “I didn’t have the right people together to do the record I wanted, so I figured I’d wait until I had them together in one spot.” At 75, Shaver said he can call this album an accomplishment. It’s a record that meanders, but reaches its end quickly and without much in the way of artistic chaff.
B
There’s the standout title track, which catches Shaver at the height of his musical virility. The bass line is a joint venture between the bassist, the rhythm guitar and — get this — a mouth harp, plucked by Tony Joe White. Shaver states his case in a smiling, predatory growl: “What I used to do all night/it takes me all night to do.” You can almost see him put a hand over his heart when the next lines hit the table like those proverbial cards: “But the womenfolk don’t complain/’Cause I’ve still got a young man’s brain/I can still do more than most men can do/I’m telling you winners, I’m long in the tooth.” He says he’s not the man he used to be, but he’s doing better than half the men his age. He’s in a milder mood in “Last Call for Alcohol.” He’s taken stock of the night behind him and the wee hours ahead and is making what sounds like a worn-out promise to break up
Shaver’s age may show on ‘Long in the Tooth,’ but he’s nowhere near done
with the bottle. “The Git Go” pairs Shaver’s sad story with a keening harmonica. That sad story is the story of original sin and a reflection of Shaver’s Christianity. It’s a song about temptation, yielding to it and then, as Shaver puts it, waking up “naked with a big headache.” The shiny red apple gets bitten by Adam, Eve, every politician who’s ever lived and soldiers tucked into caskets draped with the flag. He leavens the record with “Sunbeam Special,” a memory of a train and the place its tracks divided. “I’m in Love,” the lone love song on Long in the Tooth, is a lullaby-like tune to God. “I think everyone ought to write their own stuff,” Shaver said. “I’ve always been able to do it, I’ve done it for a lot of people, and I’m good at it. Writing’s like therapy, but cheap. I sure know I need therapy, so I guess I’ve knocked out a couple of birds with one stone that way.” Shaver said “I’ll Love You as

Much as I Can” is about a relationship he hasn’t been able to shake. “It’s about this girl, Wanda Lynn. I married her three times and I divorced her three times,” he said. “The divorces don’t seem to be working.” Wanda Lynn has moved
back in with Shaver, who said he’s not planning to make an honest woman of her a fourth time. The song lays it out clearly — Shaver will love her as much as he can, and on most days, that might not be as much as the heroine would like. “She’s real attached to me, I guess. She said she was going to live with me or she wasn’t going to go on living,” Shaver said. “This is kind of a strange thing to talk about in an airport, with people around listening, but there it is.” Shaver is a proficient writer. He said he’d written about 500 songs in the years between Long in the Tooth and its predecessor, Live at Billy Bob’s. “And they were all good,” Shaver said. “Me and [co-producer] Gary Nicholson decided which songs we’d do. Gary Nicholson is the guy I was waiting for. Him and Ray Kennedy. They were the people I needed to make this record.”

Revelations from a star Denton writer edits book of Judy Garland interviews hree years ago, Denton music teacher and newly minted writer Randy Schmidt published a definitive book about Karen Carpenter in Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter. Schmidt marks the publication of his second title, Judy Garland on Judy Garland, on Sunday night at a release party in Dallas. Schmidt Judy Garland on Judy Garland: Interviews and Encounters is a book of interviews with the iconic singer from her years as a starlet at MGM through her later years, as she struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction. Schmidt edited the book — which is possibly the closest thing around to the memoir Garland started but never completed. The book is part of the Chicago Review Press’ series in which artists discuss their work and their lives. The books begins with a 13year-old Garland in her first radio appearance under contract with Metro-GoldwynMayer. The book ends with Garland’s last known interview with Radio Denmark in

OPENING FRIDAY The Discoverers ( ) Slight but moderately entertaining comedy about a faltering middle-aged college professor (Griffin Dunne) who takes his two teen children (Madeleine Martin and Devon Graye) on a road trip in hopes of reconnecting with them. Instead, they find themselves stuck in a Lewis and Clarke re-enactment wilderness trek. Written and directed by Justin Schwarz. Not rated, 104 minutes. At the Angelika Film Center in Dallas. — Boo Allen As Above, So Below Catacombhopping horror flick is a rather hopeless mash-up of The Descent and (Rec), not to mention a dozen other found-footage movies that have clogged the screens over the last five years. This low-budget effort from director John Erick Dowdle and writer-producer-brother Drew Dowdle provides a few late scares after plenty of eye-rolling setup, with said scares due more to the heavy sound design than the action itself. Gorgeous tomb raider Scarlett (Perdita Weeks) continues her dead father’s lifelong quest to discover the legendary, eternal-life-giving Philosopher’s Stone. Teaming up with an expat clockmaker (Ben Feldman, a.k.a. Ginsberg on Mad Men) and a guy named Benji (Edwin Hodge, The Purge) who’s been brought on as the requisite cameraman-who-keepsshooting-at-all-costs, Scarlett uncovers a few clues that lead her to the Paris catacombs, which famously house the bones of 6 million dead. Rated R, 93 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter
NOW PLAYING Chef ( 1⁄2) Marking Jon Favreau’s return to indie filmmaking, Chef allows the writer-director the chance to scale down and get personal after directing the first two Iron Man blockbusters. Favreau plays Carl Casper, an out-of-work cook who experiences career rejuvenation serving Cuban entrees on a food truck. Grill chef Martin (John Leguizamo) joins Carl as they embark on a cross-country trip — with Carl’s 11-year-old son Percy (Emjay Anthony) in tow. With Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson and Bobby Cannavale. Rated R, 115 minutes. — The Associated Press

The tangled web of “The November Man” includes CIA operative Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) and a social worker (Olga Kurylenko) who’s targeted for death.
Mr. ‘November’ By Ben Kenigsberg New York Times News Service
Judging from The November Man, based on a novel by Bill Granger, the CIA’s operations in Eastern Europe are a friendsand-family affair. Former colleagues plot one another’s deaths. A junior officer interrogates her superior. A scorned pupil takes aim at his mentor’s loved ones. Geopolitical intrigue ranks second to daddy issues. The movie opens in Montenegro, where an overzealous effort to thwart an assassination results in a child’s death. Peter Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) chastises his trainee, David Mason (Luke Bracey), for disobeying orders. Five years later, David gets unwitting revenge when he’s ordered to shoot Natalia (Mediha Musliovic). He doesn’t
realize that she is Peter’s former lover and that her emergency extraction from Moscow has brought Peter out of retirement. The talent pool for hits on operatives must be small. Despite craving his old teacher’s approval, David is assigned to tie up loose ends and kill Peter, which leads to a game of cat-andmouse between them. They even call each other midpursuit. “I can’t believe you’ve still got the same phone number,” Peter says during a Belgrade chase. Acting on Natalia’s intelligence, Peter searches for a missing woman with a secret that could ruin a Russian presidential contender. The social worker (Olga Kurylenko) who used to see the missing woman has already been targeted for death. Alas, this is the sort of movie in
Double-crossing tale fails to hit it out of the park
The November Man Rated R, 108 minutes Opens Friday.
which even an assassin in a tank top, the kind who does leg stretches before a hit, comes across as an afterthought. Further trivializing developments, the plot has incitement in Chechnya and covert government alliances. This summer, A Most Wanted Man illustrated how intelligence work requires tracing links up a chain. By contrast, The November Man takes place in a closed system in which everything is known. Concealed
information can be reached with a few keystrokes. In the film’s sole gesture toward economy, a half-dozen characters seem to have dual motives. The director, Roger Donaldson, no stranger to inane double-cross plots (The Recruit), keeps the proceedings moving briskly. The film is nearly over before you begin to wonder why it’s called The November Man, and giving any thought to the explanation is beside the point. There is something to be said for a thriller that rips along with no regard for anything other than its own pace, coasting on Brosnan’s blunter-than-Bond suavity and Kurylenko’s beauty. “You just doomed us to another decade of conflict,” someone says at the end. From the perspective of the movie, that’s no matter at all.

MOVIES Continued from Page 7 The Expendables 3 The mercenary team known as the Expendables face off against a former member who went rogue and was thought to be dead. With Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas and Jet Li. Directed by Patrick Hughes. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Giver ( ) Director Philip Noyce takes Lois Lowry’s popular young adult novel and renders a fairly mature offering. In a futuristic society devoid of emotion, a young man (Brenton Thwaites) discovers from the Giver (Jeff Bridges) that feelings can be good things. Meryl Streep plays the evil Chief Elder who keeps everyone in line. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. — B.A. Guardians of the Galaxy ( 1⁄2) This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. The problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super), is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a bitterly sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his sidekick, a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — AP Hercules The mythical Greek hero Hercules leads a band of mercenaries to help end a bloody civil war in the land of Thrace and return the rightful king to his throne. With Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — LAT How to Train Your Dragon 2 ( ) The follow-up to the muchadmired animated How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t play it safe, and that’s why it’s the rare sequel that doesn’t feel somewhat stale. When Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his girlfriend Astrid (America Ferrera) discover a vicious villain (Djimon Hounsou) who’s building a dragon army, Hiccup resolves to stop him. Rated PG, 102 minutes. — AP The Hundred-Foot Journey ( ) Adaptation of Richard Morais’ novel about an Indian family opening a restaurant in a French village. Besides the always delightful Helen Mirren and the entertaining Indian actor Om Puri, it has the absurdly good-looking couple of Manish Dayal, as a gifted young Indian chef, and Charlotte Le Bon, as the gorgeous sous-chef who teaches him the joys of haute cuisine. Rated PG, 122 minutes. — AP If I Stay After a car accident leaves her caught between life and death, a young woman must choose her fate in this adaptation of Gayle Forman’s young-adult novel. Blackley. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — LAT Into the Storm A town is ravaged by deadly tornadoes while storm chasers try to obtain a once-in-alifetime shot in this found-footagestyle thriller. With Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies and Matt Walsh. Directed by Steven Quale (Final Destination 5). Rated PG-13, 89 minutes. — LAT Let’s Be Cops Two rudderless friends dress as police officers for a costume party and enjoy their newfound authority, then get mixed up with real mobsters and dirty detectives. With Damon Wayans Jr., Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle and Nina Dobrev. Rated R, 104 minutes. — LAT Lucy ( 1⁄2) Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a student of some sort living in Taiwan, and a few other unfortunates are forced to become drug mules, doomed to fly to Europe with packages implanted in their stomachs. Roughed up by thugs, Lucy suffers blows to the abdomen, and the drug starts leaking into her system — enhancing her brain capacity and leaving her with only 24 hours to live. She heads to Paris to meet Professor Norman, an expert on cerebral capacity (Morgan Freeman), and simultaneously, she’s trying to recover all the drug packets. Directed by Luc Besson. — AP Sin City: A Dame to Kill For ( 1⁄2) In this belated, 3-D sequel to 2005’s Sin City, cultishly adored graphic novelist Frank Miller and genre-exploiting director Robert Rodriguez have again jumped right into the same noir sea — or, at least, some hyper-stylized version of it. This is hardboiled on heroin. Like its predecessor, A Dame to Kill For was made with an almost entirely digital palate, placing actors — Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Eva Green — on a starkly black-and-white canvas in a fictional (but very Los Angeles-like) permanent-midnight metropolis of rampant crime, extreme brutality and skin-baring luridness. Rated R, 101 minutes. — AP Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ( 1⁄2) Like the first Transformers, this overinflated attempt to introduce the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arguably exceeds low expectations. The movie sticks fairly closely to its original comic book vision, and as fully realized flesh-and-blood CG characters, the turtles are impressive and almost always convincing. Leo, Raf, Michelangelo and Donatello are the result of a science experiment, trained for 17 or so years in the sewer by their rat sensei, Master Splinter. The end of the movie is particularly frustrating, as the spectacle overwhelms the story. With Megan Fox, Will Arnett and William Fichtner. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — San Francisco Chronicle When the Game Stands Tall A football coach takes his high-school football team from obscurity to a record-shattering 151-game winning streak. People get rea Daylong crash course in Denton music offers way-early bird By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
t’s not too early to start thinking about that fourday space next March called 35 Denton. Volunteer Craig Flory said the festival hopes to whip up some excitement for the music festival — and move some discounted tickets for the event — with a packed party starting early Saturday afternoon at Hailey’s Club. The second presale event this year (the first was in February) jams a lot of interest into a single day —
I
namely a combo birthday party and album release for rising Denton hip-hop star AV the Great, who drops Man N Da City on Friday. The presale party has a beefy lineup besides AV the Great, too: dark folk-rocker Warren Jackson Hearne and Le Leek Electrique, local power-pop outfit the Cozy Hawks, Denton indie-soul trio Black James Franco, and garage-surf psychedelic four-piece Mink Coats. The mammoth Denton funk improv band Sol Kitchen will turn loose of its horn-driven muse, and Denton epic-rock group voltREvolt will churn out its brainy grind at the show.

Denton hip-hop gets a chunk of the day. Wrecka-Mic will perform a short set, and Renzo, a member of Denton’s Street Hop crew, will play a set. Hiphop fans should make time for Gitmo Music’s “Royal Rumble,” a mic swap including some of the Denton label’s artists and collaborators. The Days, a Denton four-piece, will spin some R&B stuff, and the evening ends with a set by Denton’s live and masked disco group Starparty. Just one act is from out of town: Deerpeople, from Stillwater, Oklahoma. The sextet is made up of a motley group of musicians — including a flutist,
and accordion player and a singer who belts in a reedy tenor while the band spins out noisy folk in the manner of the Last Bison. Flory said the event includes something for those who like to show off their best moves. “Craig Welch is organizing a dance contest,” Flory said. Welch is an institution in the Denton music scene. He’s the frontman of Brutal Juice, a band that puts hardcore punk and metal in a blender. Flory didn’t drop hints about how to win the dance contest, but explained the basics.
“The contest starts at 5 p.m. You get up there, do your thing, and then the judges will decide who moves on to the finals,” Flory said. The finals start at 10 p.m., so dancers who make the cut should hydrate, stretch and trade taunts between sets. 35 Denton hasn’t announced any of the artists slotted for next year, but Flory said organizers expect to book a boatload of Denton acts.
