Brian Lambert is the mind behind Denton’s My Kickdrum Heart, the headlining band at the End of Summer Blowout Concert on Saturday evening on the Square.
T
he End of Summer Blowout Concert is an unofficial anniversary for My Kickdrum Heart. Songwriter, singer and band founder Brian Lambert said last year’s blowout concert was the first gig the alt-indie band played. Lambert said a lot has happened in just a year. First, the group has a new drummer. And the music is evolving, too. There’s a nostalgic tinge to My Kickdrum Heart. There’s a twang reminiscent of Roy Orbison, and softness of melody that bears some similarity to Ray LaMontagne. Every so often, that cool posture that comes through early-
1950s doo-wop crops up. “We do music that’s familiar, but just different enough to draw you in,” Lambert said. “I’ve been a songwriter for a decade. That’s primarily what I am, a songwriter. I can write a song a day. The band gives me a lot of different ways to try my songs. The single I released on Monday [an acoustic version of ‘Falling,’ the title track from the band’s three-song EP], the band does it in a different way. “The band thing, it gives me ideas.” As My Kickdrum Heart draws nearer to releasing its first album, the tentatively titled Love in Times of Apocalypse, Lambert said the musicians are working on performance, from dressing in suits and ties to getting out of their own way and letting the music command them when they play live.

As far as his songwriting goes, Lambert said he finds himself drawn to the ideal of love. “That’s something everyone can understand,” he said. Lambert said he isn’t worried about losing crowds to 35 Denton’s Hot Wet Mess. The

ervous Curtains — from left, Ian Hamilton, Sean Kirkpatrick and Robert Anderson — has embarked on a Texas tour to promote its latest album, Fake Infinity. The Dallasbased trio plays Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St., tonight with Mind Spiders and Diamond Age. Fake Infinity sports gritty, grousing electronic music that is tuneful enough to shake a booty to, but legit enough to listen to with arms crossed and a grim expression. Another affectation that earns the Curtains some cool points: Stoogeslike enunciation. For a band of three, Nervous Curtains unloads a bigger sound. Doors open at 10 p.m. today. abe Bash was born when Denton musicians Sydney Wright and Kitty Holt started talking about a tribute band covering the hard-rocking catalog of the Runaways.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
That’s right. The political threads of Babe Bash are but a hair’s breadth. “The catalyst for the whole thing was pretty much Queens of Noise,” said Wright, the frontwoman of the local band Sol Tax. Queens of Noise, that allfemale tribute band bowing at the altar of Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, Joan Jett and Sandy West, ended up packing Hailey’s Club last Halloween night. The tribute band’s namesake is the Runaways’ second studio album. “It went really well, especially considering it was our first show. People came up to us after our set and were like, ‘You guys just have to play again,’ and that was pretty much it,” Wright said. “With all the bands I’ve played with, that’s never happened.” Wright and Holt staged another Babe Bash in the spring, and Sol Tax released its most recent project. Now that students are back in town after summer break, it was time for another Babe Bash. This one’s Friday night at Hailey’s Club with the Red Death, Holt’s band; Austin outfit Please, Please Me; and Sol Tax. “The point is to promote these bands,” Wright said. The Red Death — which includes Cameron Holt, Brad Reed and Kitty Holt — might make you want to throw goats with its spiked-leather attitude and power chords. Jessie Torrisi and the Please, Please Me unearths dusty roadhouse rock with the regret of Lucinda Williams. Wright pens most of the songs Sol Tax plays, and the

To reach a broader audience, you need to have something more than your lyrics and a guitar.” Sol Tax has challenged Wright to deal with her music differently. And since the band was founded a few years ago, Wright said the sound has evolved. “Since the last album, we’ve gone into a lot of changes. It’s still lyrics first, but things have changed,” she said. “We’re doing a lot of things with dynamics and swells and melody lines.” Babe Bash isn’t all-female, but each lineup has brought in acts that are either all-female or fronted by women. “I feel like any support or

‘Lawless’ a violent distillation of history Fictional flick mines family tales of bootleggers
Lawless Rated R, 110 minutes. Opens Friday.
By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
If you can accept the notion that Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke could be brothers during this century or any other, you might be able to immerse yourself in the artfully pulpy allure of Lawless, based on the true story of the bootlegging Bondurants. Director John Hillcoat’s ultra-violent drama plays like a hot, sweaty, delusional fever dream and is similarly fitful. It can be visceral and operatic, beautiful and brutal but also slow and overlong. The look and the sound of it are the most effective parts, and the most intrinsically tied: Singer-songwriter Nick Cave, a longtime friend and collaborator of fellow Australian Hillcoat (on The Proposition and The Road), wrote the script and co-wrote the score, so there’s a peculiar kind of dark flavor, humor and musicality to the cadence of the dialogue. No one bursts into song, but you suspect they might and sometimes hope they would. Lawless is based on The Wettest County in the World, Matt Bondurant’s fictional tale of his grandfather, Jack, and his brothers, moonshine masters who kept the Virginia hills good ’n’ liquored up during Prohibition. The eldest, Howard (Clarke), is a volatile and frequently inebriated veteran of the first World War. The middle brother, Forrest (Hardy), is the quietly commanding leader of both the business and the fam-
ily. And then there’s Jack (LaBeouf), the youngest who’s eager to prove himself. He’s the most ambitious, which makes him the most dangerous. The Bondurant boys find their tidy little operation threatened when a corrupt Chicago lawman named Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) swoops
in to shut them down. He’s as nasty as he is nattily dressed, and Pearce once again seems to relish playing this type of precise villain. Also entering the brothers’ lives, seemingly because the story needed some sort of female figure, are two very different women. Maggie (Jessica
Chastain) arrives out of nowhere one day from The Big City with a Secret Past and immediately starts functioning as both the waitress at the brothers’ restaurant/headquarters and Forrest’s obligatory love interest. Bertha (Mia Wasikowska) is the modest and pious daughter of the town’s

preacher who catches Jack’s eye — which makes no sense, given that he’s a wannabe gangster with flashy tastes. Lawless allows neither of these fine, versatile actresses to display what they can do fully. It is mainly about the men, and the primal ways in which they survive and seek revenge. Yet it also squanders the formidable presence of Gary Oldman in just a few scenes as the big-city mobster whom Jack aspires to be like one day. He is gone for large, inexplicable chunks of time, and he is sorely missed. Still, there is Hardy, who is always hulking and intense and impossible to stop watching. Sure, his accent is a little thick and folksy but he seems to get the melody that exists within the script. As LaBeouf continues striving to show he’s a grown-up now and can do serious character work, Hardy shows up and simply dominates.

Robert Pattinson stars as a young billionaire in director David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, based on the novel by Don DeLillo.
Impenetrable city ‘Cosmopolis’ is Cosmopolis baffling even for a Cronenberg film By Boo Allen Film Critic
Faithful followers of Canadian director David Cronenberg have come to expect the weird (The Fly), and maybe even The Weird (Naked Lunch). Those who like their movies strange, obtuse and/or incomprehensible will not be disappointed in Cronenberg’s latest, Cosmopolis. Everyone else? Not so much. Of course, Cosmopolis is bizarre. But what is unexpected is its lack of clear narrative, made more insufferable by a stultifying atmosphere laden with a cast of unlikable characters uttering reams of nonsensical, irritatingly pretentious dialogue — no example will be given here because the
Rated R, 108 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas and Plano.
plague infects the entire movie. Cosmopolis is based on a novel by Don DeLillo, so the novelist can lay claim to some of the spoken inanities. But Cronenberg has taken DeLillo’s apparent ramblings and slowed them down, stuffing the often staccato deliveries into the mouths of sleepwalking characters who seem to have no purpose. Judging by what little is comprehensible, perhaps DeLillo, and by default Cronenberg, had something to say about global finances, undefined moral hazards and the perfidy of relationships.
But it’s hard to tell. Current hot property Robert Pattinson plays Eric Packer, a wealthy 28-year-old in a stretch limousine rambling around Manhattan while events outside include a possible assassination on the U.S. president, a possible assassination on Packer, swarming hordes of anarchists, and various other diversions spoken of but not always seen. Packer indulges in gibberishy financial dialogue with an aide, and then also finds time to have sex with several women (including Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton), have a prostate exam, and then discuss possible routes across town to get a haircut. Packer also seems to have a wife (Sarah Gadon), with whom he meets just long enough to have breakfast lunch and dinner, while they indulge in more cryptic con-
versations. She disappears about halfway through the film, and her place, along with many things, in this odd universe, is never explained. Almost all of this early part of the film occurs in the claustrophobic limo, filmed by cinematographer Peter Suschitzky in a dreamlike haze that adds more to the film’s surreal atmospherics than to the disjointed narrative. In the latter parts, Packer confronts some of his enemies, real and imagined, but by that time any encounters come off as artificially orchestrated. After a while, Cosmopolis becomes so uninviting that maintaining interest becomes a chore and not a pleasure. And, despite what legions of ardent young females may believe, Robert Pattinson does not possess enough screen presence to carry a film for grown-ups, much less one that never warms up.

t’s been almost a year and a half since Reggie Watts’ enormous Afro bounced in sync with his relaxed stride down quaint Denton sidewalks, but he and his iconic hair are back again for another sidesplitting performance at the Hot Wet Mess this Saturday. The electronic musician, comedian and beatboxer is excited to revisit the people and places he fell for in his adventures through our town two springs ago. “I got to see some bands in some unusual places, like record shops and alleyways,” Watts said. “It was so cool to see that. I saw this band Record Hop play at a house party, and I was just leaning in a window to watch.” Like true romance, he’s looking forward to getting to know Denton even better this time around, he said. Texas in general is usually a great place to tour, he said. For instance, because the demand was so great, he added an unexpected second show in Austin while on his spring tour this year. A Texas audience has a different style and appreciation for music than in other places, said Watts, a Seattle expatriate who’s now based in Brooklyn. “It’s a little bit more pure — the reasons why people there like certain types of music,” Watts said. “It’s more like how I remember falling in love with music in Montana. It’s got a really cool feeling to it. Things are simple and you don’t have to like bands for complicated reasons.” Hot Wet Mess and 35 Denton programming director Natalie Davila said she booked Reggie Watts a second time because she is confident that anyone who saw him perform in 2011 will want to see him again. “Five minutes into Reggie’s set at 35 Conferette, I knew we would eventually bring him back,” Davila said. “He vibed so well with the crowd and with the city in general.” The part-improvisational, part-theatrical perSee WATTS on 12

former and comedian says he is “super stoked to provide the soundtrack to some pretty crazy stuff” at Saturday’s Hot Wet Mess, which promises to bring a huge inflatable water slide to the North Texas State Fairgrounds, along with many other ways for attendees to get soaked. Watts says he gains inspiration for his music from a variety of sources, including science, politics, architecture, commercials, weird billboards and conversations with people on the

Watts street. His technical music background and stellar improv skills landed him a position as a co-host of the Independent Film Channel’s Comedy Bang Bang series. Actor and musician Michael Cera was Watts’ favorite guest to create music with on the show, thanks to Cera’s good improvisational skills. Unfortunately, Watts said he didn’t realize that both of the men were intermittently strolling the same Denton turf
during the 35 Conferette music festival in 2011. “That kind of sucks. I think that might have been before I met him,” Watts said. “If we had met, we would’ve hung out.” He is quick to add that the nature of festivals is sometimes too busy and chaotic. When it comes to festivals, Austin’s South by Southwest Music and Media Conference tops the charts as the craziest, he said. “That’s why I like Denton. It’s so much better, so much more
reasonable,” he said. “South by Southwest is just, like, advertising everywhere, and I mean, there will be some advertising [in Denton], but not like South by Southwest.” Watts says his agenda for the remainder of 2012 involves developing a couple of apps for the iPhone, as well as performing at many more gigs and festivals. “It’s crazy sometimes when you’re so tired, when you’ve been traveling all over the place, even though it’s all great
things,” he said. “Everybody gets tired no matter what they do, but I could never complain, for sure.” With all of that travel comes exposure. Watts’ quickly-growing status as a household name is sometimes still difficult for him to process, he said. “I’m still the guy that is not sure that it’s really happening, but nowadays I’m a little more comfortable that it really is happening,” Watts said. “For me, I just want to keep making cool [expletive].”

A villain (Tom Hardy) steals a nuclear weapon and threatens to blow up Gotham, while several other plot points play out in this overwritten opus. friend (Bell) to an interview for her dream job in Los Angeles. Rated R, 99 minutes. — AP Hope Springs (####) The first produced script from television writer and producer Vanessa Taylor (Alias, Game of Thrones) explores the complicated dynamics that develop over a long-term relationship with great honesty and little judgment. Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) live a sexless life in a comfortable Nebraska suburb. When Kay finally decides she’s sick of their complacent routine, she insists Arnold join her for a week of intensive couples therapy with a renowned psychologist (Steve Carell). Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. — AP Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (##) Halfway into the third animated tale about New York City zoo animals on their overseas adventures, Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller) tells some new circus friends that their act was not too entertaining for families “because you were just going through the motions out there. So, too, for Madagascar 3, which goes through a lot of motions. The result: A cute story about zoo animals running off to join the circus becomes overwhelmed by a blur of color and animated acrobatics. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — AP The Odd Life of Timothy Green (##1/2) Adapting a short story by Ahmet Zappa (son of Frank), writerdirector Peter Hedges (Pieces of April) tries for old-fashioned wholesomeness only to flounder amid a well-intended but sappy tale of a childless couple mystically granted a test run at parenthood. Hedges assembled an impressive cast, led by Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as parents to a mystery boy (CJ Adams) who comes into their lives, and the actors buy into the story’s conceits wholeheartedly. But a movie’s in trouble when the characters are just as unbelievable as the premise. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP ParaNorman (##1/2) No one wants
to tell 60 puppet makers that their months of toil were ill spent. But the frequently wondrous and whimsical visuals far surpass the disappointingly slipshod story of an 11-year-old boy named Norman (voiced by Kodi SmitMcPhee) who can see and speak to the dead. His uncle (John Goodman) bequeaths to him the duty of pacifying a witch that has haunted their town for 300 years. After failing in the ritual, Norman and an improvised gang flee from zombies, and the running around town takes up much of the film. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — AP Premium Rush (###1/2) Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a Manhattan bike messenger given the job of delivering an envelope through the city’s crowded streets during rush hour, all while being chased by a
rogue cop (Michael Shannon) and several other parties. Director and co-writer David Koepp delivers a nonstop thriller, long on action and visuals but also with an involving plot. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — B.A. Thunderstruck Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant plays himself in this family-friendly basketball fantasy about a teenage fan (Taylor Gray) who magically switches talents with Durant. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — The Dallas Morning News 2016: Obama’s America This documentary, directed by conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, looks at influences in President Barack Obama’s past and what the United States might be like in four years if he is reelected.
