02 Don’t North Texas State Fair
08 18 10
That exclamation is your official invitation to this year’s 82nd North Texas State Fair and Rodeo (NTSFR). Since 1928, this beloved annual event has promoted the cowboy way during its nine-days of romping rodeo, spectacular country music, amazing attractions, tasty vittles, pageants, contests and even a parade. Beginning Friday, August 20 through Saturday, August 28, the fair is expected to attract more than 150,000 people to the North Texas State Fairgrounds at University Drive and Carroll Boulevard, its location since 1948. Branding the fair each year is truly a calling and labor of love for its executive director, Glenn Carlton, who once competed in the rodeo arena. For the past several years, it has been his mission to find the truest and most respectful way of representing the culture and traditions associated with the fair. A picture featuring five little cowboys from the Mutton Bustin competition made its way to Carlton after last year’s fair.
make us come gitcha! Ranging from four to six years old, each young cowboy in the photo is decked from head to toe in hats, boots, vests and long sleeved shirts. It triggered inspiration. “I immediately knew it was something that we had to use,” he said. Nanci Kimmey, NTSFR’s executive assistant, agreed. With the picture in mind, he kept thinking about it until he came up with “don’t make us come gitcha.” “I was so excited. I think I called Nanci at 11 p.m. to tell her I got it,” Carlton said. “Then we reunited the young cowboys for a professional photo and video shoot. We got some great stuff!” The final poster features three boys, Levi Nelson (his mom, Amanda shot and sent in the initial photo), Ronnie Sellers, and Riley Webb, all wearing tough cowboy expressions on their little boy faces. Artist Ron Bonge, who lives in Clifton, Texas, created the poster and has worked with NTSFR for the last five years. Bonge also creates commissions for the Heart O Texas Fair and Rodeo, San
Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo. “I really enjoy working on rodeo posters,” Bonge said. “I really like drawing and painting cow kids and cow dogs so this year’s theme was a lot of fun to work with. Everyone likes a little cowboy.” And there will be plenty of little and big cowboy and cowgirl rodeo action, plus big time musical entertainment all for the general admission price of $12 for adults and $5 for children. The Denton Independent School District and a few of its neighboring school districts will issue a ticket to each student and area O’Reily Auto Parts stores also have free tickets on-
hand. The generous support of sponsors allows fair organizers to maintain the value by offering affordable, all-inclusive tickets. “We wouldn’t be able do anything without our sponsors … many have been with us from the beginning,” Kimmey said. “We’re also very excited about our new ones.” Sam’s Club is the new title sponsor for the carnival and other first time supporters are the U.S Army, 7-Eleven and the Health Mart Healthy Living Tour. Darr Equipment, a sponsor last year, doubled its sponsorship this year by bringing in extra JVC equipment. Title sponsors are: Miller Lite for the rodeo, DATCU for the Kid’s Zone and it’s the Syracuse SausageFun Zone. Budweiser supports the two music stages. “It’s very heartwarming to realize in this community, no matter what is going on, we have strong and loyal support from our sponsors. They are the backbone of our organization along with our community, volunteers and city lead-
ers,” Kimmey said. A core group of nearly 400 volunteers help run the fair each year. Many of those folks will be on hand for the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo Parade which will be held Saturday, August 21. This year’s Parade Marshal is country western singer Moe Bandy, who takes the Budweiser stage later that evening. Line up for the parade begins at 8:30 a.m. The parade starts at 10 a.m. The first come – first served starting line up will be at Denton High School, 1007 Fulton St. in Denton. Back on the fairgrounds, attendees will notice several improvements including new walkways and resurfaced parking areas. “We keep getting bigger and better,” Kimmey said. “It’s always our goal to make it the best fair ever,” Carlton added. “Our intention is to continue to set attendance and revenue records allowing us to give back even more to the community.” For schedules, event and ticket information, please visit www.ntfair.com.

04 Fair delivers economic impact North Texas State Fair
08 18 10
Along with its cultural influence and tribute to tradition, the positive economic impact of the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo (NTSFR) lasts much longer than its nine-day run. Each year, more than $50,000 in scholarships, community support, facility donations and other donations for youth and community projects is made possible because of the fair’s contribution. NTSFR also donates the use of the entire facility to the Denton County Livestock Association to produce its Youth Fair each March, raising nearly $300,000 for area youth through the project sale and scholarships. The combined efforts of these organizations give back $350,000 each year. “It’s our goal to continue to grow the fair and do even more,” said Glenn Carlton, Executive Director of the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo. In addition, the economic impact on the surrounding community was measured during a year-long study that began at the 2008 Fair. Conducted by the Center for Economic Development at University of North Texas under the direction of Dr. Terry Clower, the study concluded that in 2008 the benefit to the county was $6 million and the direct impact on the city of Denton was $3.2 million. “When Dr. Clower released our economic impact report last year he told me that a basic model has been established,” Carlton said. “Whatever percentage the event
grew, it would affect the economic impact that same percentage. We grew 17 percent in 2009, so that would convert our economic impact to more than $7 million for Denton County, and $3.7 million direct impact on the City of Denton.” According to the study, the industries that receive the most impact are food services, entertainment venues and lodging. The survey also showed that about 25 percent of fairgoers travel from outside of the city of Denton. The study provides important data for growing the event and moving forward toward building a new facility in the future, Carlton said. Mission Statement: The North Texas State Fair Association is a volunteer supported, 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization that preserves and promotes western heritage and values. The North Texas State Fair and Rodeo contributes to the quality of life in the City of Denton, Denton County and throughout the North Texas area. This is done through a first class nine day Fair and Rodeo, year round facilities, and various community and youth oriented programs and events. The North Texas State Fair Association strives to preserve and promote an understanding of the agricultural industry. The North Texas State Fair Association is true and committed to its mission of supporting Youth, Agriculture, and Community. All revenue generated is reinvested into our various programs, scholarships and facilities.

10 Non-stop action in the NTSF rodeo arena North Texas State Fair

World champion cowboys get well acquainted with crafty, powerful livestock each night in the rodeo arena during the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo. Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association contestants will compete Friday, Aug. 20, through Sunday, Aug. 22, in a series of events including bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, TieDown Roping, Steer Roping, Barrel Racing and bull riding. The Invitational Ranch Rodeo is Monday, Aug. 23, is followed by the future of the industry with the 21 and Under Rodeo which takes place Tuesday, Aug. 24, and Wednesday, Aug. 25. Bulls take center stage for the Bull Blowout Thursday, Aug. 26, through Saturday, Aug. 28. Weldon Burgoon, owner of Weldon’s Western Wear and Saddle Shop, said events like these groom future rodeo stars. “For those starting out, this is a good opportunity to be in front of large crowds and the lights,” a switch, he said, from some venues in which an audience may mainly be relatives. Burgoon’s memories of the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo date back more than six decades. He remembers the excitement he felt roping in the arena at age 11. “I was roping at the fair and rodeo in 1946 in the tie down and break away roping.” Back then it was called the Denton County Agricultural Fair and was located on property near what is now the City of Denton Police Station. According to Burgoon, Dr. W.C. Kimbrough gave the fair association the 20 some-odd acres where the existing fairgrounds are located today. Board members sold $500 bonds and built the first of the three livestock buildings and one of the existing exhibit buildings. Burgoon served as rodeo chairman for 14 years until 1987. Today, the 80-year-old will be on-hand for the four days of Mutton Bustin for four to six year olds - an event his store has continuously supported. “We’ve always tried to help the
young people,” Burgoon said. “We have sponsored it ever since they introduced it into the Denton County Livestock Association Youth Fair. Then NTSFR decided it would be a good event for them to have, too.” Burgoon provides the safety hel-
mets and vest at no charge. Participants also receive a nice token buckle and, this year, the 10 finalists will also get a gift certificate for a free pair of Wrangler jeans. Volunteers do the hard work at the event, he said, and at his age,
“it’s best if I hide, watch and stay out of the way.” Burgoon’s family will all attend the fair at some point. He said he will watch the Mutton Bustin competition from an elevated chair, near the shoot where the riders mount the sheep.
After rounds of watching their competitors get tossed to the ground by sheep, some riders get a little apprehensive. Burgoon said he often hears a “good many discussions - there is some pleading between the parents and riders going on.”

Fresh from shooting a music video in Corpus Christi for his new song and first Top 40 hit on the country music charts, “Pound Sign,” it’s obvious Kevin Fowler is having fun. “I am out plugging the new single. It’s kicking butt – the first top 40 hit we’ve ever had!” The song is available now on ITunes and the full record will be out in October. “We’re hoping to get the video done in the next couple of weeks,” Fowler said. “The single is already out and it has been number one for about four weeks on the Texas charts and now it has broke the top 40 …it’s moving along doing its thing.” Fowler will be doing his thing on the Budweiser main stage at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo on Thursday, August 26. “It’s just a good old country fair,” Fowler said of the venue which he and many of his fellow “Red Dirt” musicians continuously agree to play. “That’s the cool thing about Texas and it doesn’t happen anywhere else … (like) at the North Texas State Fair …you see every body from grandkids to great grandparents coming out. That’s the magic to me about the whole Texas music scene.” Some of Fowler’s friends, like Mark Chesnutt, are on the venue as well. “Me and Chestnutt, I think we’re forbidden to hang with each any more by our managers and our wives,” he said. “We are good old drinking buddies …somebody always almost goes to jail when we hang out.” Fowler may be too busy to be hanging out with fellow musicians but he always makes time for fans. “Every single night I stay and sign autographs until the very last person. It’s all about the fans and you don’t get that anywhere else . . . most Texas artists are very accessible and very hands on with the fans. That’s really what it’s all about.” Fair organizers know they’ve got the best of the best playing their stages this year. “We have the hottest line up we’ve ever have,” said the Fair’s Executive Assistant Nanci Kimmey. The music line-up holds across the board appeal. “I’ve had lots of phone calls
Stoney LaRue from fan club people,” Kimmey said. “That is what is so wonderful about of our performers – they transcend all ages.” “Stoney LaRue, Randy Rogers, Mark Chesnutt . . . how can you choose to come just one night?” Kimmey added. “You have to come all nine days!” On the Budwesier Stage all concerts begin at 9:30 p.m. For a list of the entertainers performing on the Bud Light Stage, please visit www.ntfair.com.
Friday, August 20 Stoney LaRue (opening night) At 30 years old, Stoney LaRue now performs close to 300 dates a year at top festivals and venues across the world, including the Caribbean and Europe, sharing bills with renowned acts like Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan, Dierks Bentley, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell and others. With a band that includes Jeremy Bryant(drums), Jesse Fritz (bass), Kevin Webb (guitar), Jeremy Watkins (fiddle) and Steve Littleton (keys), Stoney is poised for what is on the horizon to come. The music is undeniably inside of LaRue, but he’s the type of artist that doesn’t have to point it out to you, his belief in the music is strong enough that it just powers through transparently. LaRue is not trying to be anybody but the artist that he is, and his sincerity just seeps out, spills off the stage, and overtakes any room.
Saturday, August 21 Moe Bandy Moe Bandy is one of the most
popular country singers of our times, producing a series of hits that made him known as one of the great honky tonk singers of country music. Bandy’s songs embraced traditional barroom fare, often humorous, telling stories of love, cheating, drinking, and patriotism. His biggest run of hits came from ‘70s and early ‘80s and over a long career he has remained a popular favorite through his theater in Branson, MO. Bandy has added to his solo career by teaming up with other greats such as Joe Stampley, Judy Bailey and Janey Frickey with such greats as “Holding the Bag” and “It’s a Cheatin’ Situation.” Moe Bandy’s awards include Most Promising Male Vocalist, Song of the Year, Duo of the Year and Best Country Video.
Sunday, August 22 John Arthur Martinez John Arthur Martinez offers flowing melodies and stories told by a true Texas songwriter, evocative lyrics inspired by wide open spaces, friends, family and the wayfarers crossing paths in unexpected ways. Martinez’ music is filled with the spiritual and creative energy of Texas’ Hill Country. He bears musical influences ranging from Dan Fogelberg and James Taylor to Carlos Santana, Cuco Sanchez and Asleep at the Wheel. Martinez’s roots, and his heart, lie squarely in Texas, not Nashville or Europe. His music, further nourished by his MexicanAmerican heritage, contains a unique depth and earnestness.
Tuesday, August 24 Rich O’Toole Make no mistake about it, Rich O’Toole is a showman. Appearing on the album is a star-studded cast of musicians including Chris Masterson (Jack Ingram’s Beat Up Ford Band), Rich Brotherton (Robert Earl Keen Band), Nick Worley (Cooder Graw and Cory Morrow Band) and Bobby Flores. The result of his hard work is evidenced in his early success. His debut single “Queen of the Misfits”
has already gone top 5 on the Texas Music Chart and the Texas Regional Radio report after having been on the chart a short time. And while all of this might sound impressive, O’Toole is just warming up. The sky truly is the limit for this rising singer/songwriter.
Wednesday, August 25 Max Stalling 10 years, five cds. Respect as a songwriter. Top flight band. An expanding and loyal fan base.

Monday, August 23 Jake Hooker Jake Hooker was born listening to the sounds of traditional country music through his father’s west Texas country band. Hooker began playing the bass at the age of seven and practiced diligently until he mastered the honky tonk sound. He formed his own band at the age of 14 and began performing. By the age of 18, Hooker was playing bass and singing full time. His love and passion for traditional country music never ceases. There is no doubt that Jake is strongly influenced by the sounds of Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Faron Young, Curtis Potter, Leon Rausch, and Darrell McCall.

Not too bad of a track record for a guy who never felt he really had any business being in the music business. Stalling composes songs that seem about the here and now yet seem to also have one foot planted in the past. Sporting a vintage LBJ style “open road” hat, which is dangerously close to becoming his trademark, Stalling’s shows are at once intimate and up-close with him chatting up the crowd between songs, and a ‘tour de force’ of sound on the shoulders of his top-shelf band
the Nashville scene in the 1990s with a long, hard string of hit singles beginning with “Too Cold at Home” and including “Brother Jukebox” and “I’ll Think of Something.” Early on in his career, he received the CMA Horizon
before turning his full attention to his own vision of music.
Kevin Fowler
Thursday, August 26 Kevin Fowler Down-home humor and heartfelt sentiment are prominent themes in Kevin Fowler’s music, and as important as a good beat. A native of Amarillo who grew up listening to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, Fowler rounded out his musical education in Los Angeles attending the Guitar Institute of Technology, and then returned to Texas to join the award-winning hard rock band Dangerous Toys. He dabbled with his own Southern rock band, Thunderfoot, in the late ‘90s
The Randy Rogers Band built its audience by combining forces: It’s a dynamic live act centered around songs that fit the rowdy, party vibe of the concert circuit, but their songs also say something. When the Randy Rogers Band’s last project debuted as the most-downloaded country album on iTunes, plenty of the industry “insiders” on Music Row were left scratching their heads: Who are these guys? The Nashville elite may not have known about the five-piece band, but much of America already did. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them alongside such artists as U2 and the Stones in its list of Top 10 Must-See Artists in the summer of 2007.
Saturday, August 28 Mark Chesnutt (closing night) A native of Beaumont, Texas, Mark Chesnutt is a harbinger of traditional country music. He hit
as Joe Diffie and Tracy Lawrence, Mark continues to release new albums with hits such as “Heard It in a Love Song” and his most recent release “Outlaw.”
