A Creative Arts Studio, home base for the monthly fine arts stroll in downtown Denton, will have refreshments, activities and an opening for a fall show that starts Friday. Artist Trey Wright is the featured artist in the gallery. The Denton artist earned his bachelor’s degree in art from the University of North Texas. He’s had art in shows in Philadelphia, Portland, Denver and Dallas. UNT jazz percussion student Sam Friedland will lead Friendship Venture in the arts mixer’s music at A Creative Art Studio. The group performs mostly jazz and conceptual music and will perform original music at the event. A Creative Art Studio will be open or the mixer from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday. At 7 p.m., the gallery will present a free performance by members of the UNT African Percussion Ensemble, led by master drummer Gideon Alorwoyie. UNT on the Square is located at 109 N. Elm St. Attendees can check out Oxide Gallery in its new location at 211 N. Cedar St. The downtown gallery recently moved from its original spot at 501 W. Hickory St. and reopened its new space downtown. The gallery will have extended hours on Friday for the mixer. Registration is now under way for the Early Childhood Music Program offered by the University of North Texas College of Music. The course, which begins Sept. 22, is open to children from infancy up through age 5, along with their parents or caregivers. The 10-week program introduces children to music, allowing them to absorb what they can and develop their musical ability. Children in the classes are “learning music through play,” said teacher Heidi Scheibmeir, who is the assistant director for the program. Five classes are offered, based on age groups,

For a movie about writing, about the transporting nature of a compelling narrative and the importance of crafting something timeless and true, The Words is needlessly complicated. It boasts an impressive cast and some glimmers of strong performances, notably from a grizzled Jeremy Irons, whose character sets the film’s many stories-within-stories in motion as a young man. And it kindasorta explores the notions of art, fraud and the need to sleep at night. But ultimately, The Words seems more interested in melodrama than anything else. The writing-directing team of Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal (who co-wrote the story for Tron: Legacy and are childhood friends of star Bradley Cooper) direct for the first time here. Certainly, they

must be familiar with the doubts and frustrations all writers face at some time or another, the need to have your voice heard and the fear that what you’re offering to the world might just plain suck. But while they’ve come up with a clever nugget of a premise, they’ve couched it in a gimmicky package that keeps us at arm’s length emotionally. The Words begins with celebrated writer Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) reading excerpts from his latest best-selling novel (titled The Words, conveniently enough) to an enraptured crowd. Among the audience members is the beautiful grad student Daniella (Olivia Wilde), who has come to flirt with him and eventually, in a total 180, force him to face his own truth. While it’s always good to see both of these actors, the film did not need this framing device at all. It’s not that it

makes things confusing — all the story lines are distinct and clearly delineated, and Quaid and Wilde do have some actual tension with each other — it just feels like show-offy clutter. As Clay begins to read, the film flashes to the characters in the book and their story, which is probably where the film should have started all along. Cooper plays Rory Jansen, who also happens to be a celebrated writer appearing before an enraptured crowd. Rory is receiving a prestigious award for his debut novel, the one that made him an instant literary sensation. Trouble is, he didn’t actually write it. A flashback to a few years earlier, when his marriage to the beautiful and loving Dora (Zoe Saldana) was still new, reveals him hammering away at his laptop and struggling to find a literary agent who will take a chance on him. While in Paris on their honeymoon, though,

he happened to buy an old satchel in a secondhand store. And within that satchel, a typed manuscript happened to be hidden: the story of a young man, his bride and their baby in post-World War II France. And that typed manuscript just happened to be The Real Thing. Rory knows it’s wrong, but he passes off the work as his own, and voila! He’s a superstar. But wait! Irons is skulking around, an old man (whose character is literally called Old Man) hoping to talk with Rory and share his own story — which we also see in tastefully lighted, sepiatoned flashbacks. (Antonio Calvache of Little Children and In the Bedroom is the cinematographer.) It’s pretty obvious who this Old Man is, but it’s still a pleasure to watch him relish in regaling his tale and make this punk kid squirm. Irons also has some lovely, vulnerable moments, and as Cooper showed last year in Limitless,

he’s always a more interesting actor when he’s distraught. Still, The Words leaves nothing to the imagination, smothering all these storylines in narration that spells out the actions we’re seeing or emotions we could infer for ourselves. And the characters themselves in all of these tales are total cliches: the scruffy, hungry writer in his spare Brooklyn loft; the blandly selfless and supportive wife; the wide-eyed, small-town soldier seeing the world for the first time, etc. And Hemingway is referenced ad nauseum, as if he were the only novelist who could possibly influence anyone, ever. Maybe this was an intentional acknowledgement of literary conventions from Klugman and Sternthal. Or maybe The Words really is that eye-rollingly hackneyed.

of blistering North Texas heat. It’s practically a tradition, always promising hot rods, lots of antiques and fine art. In fact, the only thing new about this year’s Arts, Antiques & Autos is an art contest. Over the years, the car, hot rod and motorcycle shows have grown, and this year, up to 200 participants are expected to show cars. See DOWNTOWN on 12

Downtown A Best of Show title is awarded to winners in each category, but the pleasure also belongs to the viewer. Visitors to the Square get to see antique and classic cars up close. Most of them have been lovingly restored and preserved, with many an owner on hand to chat about his vehicle, whether it’s a bike that toured the roads of England in the 1940s or a car that cruised the streets near Denton High School in the days of sock hops. Once visitors exhaust the car, truck, hot rod and motorcycle shows, they can tour the Square to look at vendor art booths, where shoppers can check out one-of-a-kind pieces or bid on merchant goods and art at the Main Street Association’s silent auction.

Denton Main Street officials said the event will include a contest devoted to hand-rendered or digitally produced images of the county’s iconic Courthouse on the Square, or images of other downtown buildings. The contest will also accept images of iconic Denton sites, cars, motorcycles or antiques. The art has been gathered and will be on exhibit during the event. Selected entries will be entered into the Denton Main Street silent auction. The artwork that wins the contest will be used in promoting the 2013 Arts, Antiques & Autos. A perennial favorite of the event is the “Attic Treasure” antique appraisals. Antique specialists will be waiting in a few downtown spots for people who want to

learn more about antiques and heirlooms. The specialists will inspect art, jewelry, clocks, china, silver, glass and general antiques. The experts will study three

or fewer items per person. No furniture will be appraised. Visitors must bring the item; photos won’t be studied for appraisal. Appraisals are for information only, and will not

provide dollar values. Tickets for “Attic Treasure” are $5 per item and will be available at the event information booth or inside the Courthouse on the Square.
