Arts, Antiques & Autos celebrates nostalgia, creativity he cars, trucks and motorcycles are the big attraction for the Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza on Saturday on the historic downtown Denton Square. The Denton Main Street Association stages the free family event each year, and locals are invited to check out the classic and vintage vehicles and cast a ballot across six categories, including tongue-in-cheek classes “Family Truckster,” “Best Midlife Crisis Car” and “Diamond in the Rough.” The trophies for the categories are made by local artists, who put custom-painted, oneof-a-kind touches on old and antique car parts. The association expects more than 200 participants in the annual car show and contest. The Chalk Art Fest returns to Arts, Antiques & Autos. This year marks the first time the classes have expanded to serve elementary school students. Svec previously worked with the Early Childhood Music Program when she was at UNT for her bachelor’s degree in music education. All of the classes aim to nurture children’s musical development. Any parent would provide persuasive testimony that their children have learned a great deal in this program.” Registration officially closed Monday, but the program will accept participants later if space is available. Effective character study hidden in crime drama

Building menace takes the place of brainless gunplay and excessive violence in The Drop, a new crime drama with an emphasis on the drama. The film does have its violence, and its gunplay, but it achieves its effects elsewhere. Dennis Lahane wrote the screenplay from his own short story, “Animal Rescue.” And Michael Roskam directs, mostly in the same methodical style evinced in his 2011 Belgian Oscar nominee Bullhead. Together, Lehane and Roskam combine to establish a sense of identity and place, taking time to register small details — an insignia on a coffee cup, a close-up of a stopped watch, the names of plaster saints in a condemned church. Separately, these amount to little, but taken together, they help build a flavorful portrait of a Brooklyn neighborhood overrun with Chechen mobsters. Another throwaway detail comes when Detective Ortiz (John Torres) mentions to bartender Bob (Tom Hardy) that he sees Bob almost every day at Mass. Why, the detective asks, does Bob never take communion? The casual question lies dormant for much of the film, forgotten until near the end, when Bob’s communion absence reveals much about him. Detective Ortiz talks to Bob because of robbery the night be-

fore at the bar. As the lawman follows up, a careful plot unfolds involving the bar’s titular owner, Marvin (the late James Gandolfini), the Chechens and Eric (Matthias Schoenaerts), a men-
acing local man who allegedly committed an earlier neighborhood murder. Other plot lines seem disconnected but play into the escalating tension, such as a reappearing local woman, Nadia (Noomi Rapace), and an abused and abandoned dog rescued by Bob. Throughout it all, Bob seems to float on the edges of the drama, barely involved with what goes on around him. He becomes so nonthreatening and
almost passive, someone remarks about him: “No one ever sees you coming.” Hardy plays Bob as a slow-witted, slow-talking boob, someone anyone can push around. Until they can’t. Director Roskam’s greatest asset lies in selling his story on its surfaces. Audiences may be anticipating constant action or mayhem, but the interesting activity lies beneath. For what he has made is not an action-thriller, but a character study.
The Giver ( ) Director Philip Noyce takes Lois Lowry’s popular young adult novel and renders a fairly mature offering. In a futuristic society devoid of emotion, a young man (Brenton Thwaites) discovers from the Giver (Jeff Bridges) that feelings can be good things. Meryl Streep plays the evil Chief Elder who keeps everyone in line. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. — B.A. Guardians of the Galaxy ( 1⁄2) This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. The problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super), is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. Peter
Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a bitterly sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his sidekick, a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — The Associated Press The Hundred-Foot Journey ( ) Adaptation of Richard Morais’ novel about an Indian family opening a restaurant in a French village. Besides the always delightful Helen
Mirren and the entertaining Indian actor Om Puri, it has the absurdly good-looking couple of Manish Dayal, as a gifted young Indian chef, and Charlotte Le Bon, as the gorgeous sous-chef who teaches him the joys of haute cuisine (and not much more — this is a PG-rated movie). Rated PG, 122 minutes. — AP The Identical ( 1⁄2) Suppose Elvis Presley’s stillborn twin had lived, been raised separately and unaware that he had a brother, and eventually turned into a world-class Elvis impersonator? If it weren’t for Hecht, Gone With the Wind might have never been the classic it is. Denton Community Theatre opens the rarely produced Moonlight and Magnolias this weekend. The comedy chronicles how Hecht was compelled — half-bullied, half-bought, really — to rewrite the script Sidney Howard created for executive producer David O. Selznick. It makes hay of the artistic tension between Hecht and director Victor Fleming, whom Selznick locked in his office for five days to resurrect the train wreck that Gone With the Wind threatened to be.
Director Betty Kay Seibt said Ron Hutchison’s 2004 comedy stays quite close to Selznick’s personal accounts of the five days he fought, cajoled and encouraged Fleming and Hecht to eke out a script. “Sidney Howard had died after completing the script for Gone With the Wind, but it was too long,” Seibt said. “It would have been something like six hours long if the script was turned into a film. He brought Hecht in to be the script doctor.” Hecht hadn’t read past the first page of Mitchell’s story of the humiliation of the antebellum South and the plucky-
but-flawed passion of plantation families through the coming of age of Scarlett O’Hara. Hecht and critics saw two things in the story of Gone With the Wind — a bodice-ripper dressed up in dead Southern gentility and an uncomfortable yearning for an America where slavery was acceptable and fashionable. Hecht himself was an outspoken activist against the Ku Klux Klan and a supporter of the Allied Forces during World War II. During the rewrite of Gone With the Wind, Hecht railed against what he saw as Hollywood’s cowardice over offending its European markets.
Hecht pronounced the film dead before arrival. American moviegoers of 1939 weren’t interested in movies set in the Civil War, he insisted, and he knew enough about the novel to know Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler were the wrong sort of heroes. Scarlett was pickled in antebellum privilege, and Rhett was fine until he was castrated by his love of Scarlett. Seibt said Moonlight succeeds thanks to the triangle of men in the story. “Selznick is committed to the movie heart and soul. Fleming is trying to get a See MAGNOLIAS on 10

Magnolias foothold in the business just as The Wizard of Oz is wrapping, and Hecht is the one who is the most safe. If the movie is a stinker, Hecht won’t be hurt. He’s been around and already has a reputation,” Seibt said. Moonlight marks the return of Bill Kirkley to the Denton stage. He usually works from where Seibt sits, directing musicals for Music Theatre of Denton. He jumped at the chance to play Hecht. “We’re following a map that Betty Kay has drawn for us,” Kirkley said. “She brought each of us biographies of each of these characters. Selznick is the hope in this story. Flemming is the dreamer and Hecht is the cynic. I think you almost need to have people who push and pull each other to create something worthwhile, and that’s certainly what happened in this instance.” The comedy comes from the situation. Selznick is desperate to make a hit movie from a beloved novel. He convinces Hecht to tackle the rewrite, and after firing George Cukor from the director’s chair, entices Fleming to direct, but only after he helps Selznick act out the novel. In addition to money, Selznick offers the men crates of bananas and peanuts. “Selznick read an article about them being brain food,” Seibt said. “There were also amphetamines involved. Selznick was involved in some drug use. Busy Denton actor, playwright and director Bryan Patrick plays the role of Selznick, and equally busy actor Sterling Gafford plays Fleming.
Movie producer David O. Selznick (Bryan Patrick) believes “Gone With the Wind” could become the definitive film of its time — even if the book was considered the “Twilight” of its day in 1939. “I love old Hollywood and I love old movies,” Patrick said. “I was at one of the first readthroughs and I could really relate to someone who writes and directs. And I’ve known these guys, Bill and Sterling, for years now.” Gafford said he’s come to like Fleming and his occasionally puffed-out chest. “This is a guy who was liter-
ally a driver. A guy who made his living driving people to movie sets. Then one day, he went onto a set and fixed a camera. He literally worked his way up from there to become a director,” Gafford said. The play has all the makings of a winning comedy: smart people, really high stakes and fierce disagreements. Seibt said she and the actors carefully cho-
reographed a slap fight that happens in the first act. The scene plays out through classic physical humor. “They really agonized over Scarlett slapping Prissy,” Seibt said. Hecht nearly cashed out of the process when Selznick insisted he write the dramatic scene when Scarlett smacks her young slave when it turns out
Prissy not only fails to convince an overworked doctor to leave a hospital full of wounded soldiers, but lied about being a midwife. Hecht resists writing a heroine who would beat a slave and a child. Fleming and Selznick promise the cruelty can be blunted by clever camera work. Seibt said the set — Selznick’s office — will grow more cluttered and more claustrophobic as the men work toward their deadline. Actress Vanessa Welch stays on set as Miss Poppenghul, Selznick’s overworked but precise secretary. “He had several secretaries, and he was always sending them memos about details that had to be taken care of on his movies. Just like in the scene where he demands they use ice chips in Gone With the Wind instead of ice cubes. ‘If you don’t take care of the details, it’s all just wood and canvas,’ he said. And there was an awful lot of painted scenery in the film.” The actors said Moonlight makes them appreciate the film more than they had before. Except maybe for Kirkley, who shares with Hecht a surprising ignorance of pop culture. “I’ve never seen the movie,” Kirkley said. The admission drew gasps around the PointBank Black Box Theatre, where the small cast and crew has been rehearsing. “No way. For real?” Gafford asked. “I’ve never seen Gone With the Wind,” Kirkley said. “I’m going to wait until after the run [of the play] is over. I don’t want the movie to affect how I see the character, and how he comes to see the story.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
