T
he Lewisville Lake Symphony will kick off its 29th season this weekend with two performances of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, featuring pianist Nikita Fitenko. The program will also include a performance of Symphony No. 4, the Italian, by Felix Mendelssohn. The symphony is under the direction of Maestro Adron Ming. Fitenko, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia, earned a doctoral degree from the University of North Texas’ piano program. He is co-director of the Washington International Piano Festival and a professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Fitenko has recorded five albums, included three on the Altarus Records label. The artist said he’s excited about this weekend’s two performances and presenting his interpretation of the work. He said he looks forward to an experience of “good musicmaking.” “Music is about emotion,” Fitenko said, and he hopes to deliver a high-level emotional performance that the audience feels. A fan favorite, Fitenko is returning for his fourth appearance with the Lewisville Lake Symphony, with performances Friday and Sunday at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater in Old Town Lewisville. Nancy Wright, an honorary Lewisville Lake Symphony board member and former board chairwoman, said

Fitenko has been one of the symphony’s “most popular soloists over the years.” “His style is very commanding,” she said. “He plays with a lot of enthusiasm and musicality, and I think that’s what brings people back again and again. “I think [attendees] can expect to hear a first-class music experience.” Fitenko was the symphony’s first performer in its chamber music series, Wright said. In a solo setting years ago, he held a fundraiser and asked people to donate if they enjoyed the music, she said. “That initial performance

‘Falling’ into place for Mike Ryan 03 UNT grad’s music career on upswing with album debut
I
f his debut album Night Comes Falling is any sort of sign, University of North Texas graduate and rising Texas country artist Mike Ryan will be gaining on the Eli Young Band’s download count.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
The Fort Worth artist has all the right stuff: infectious, twangy hooks, that approachable, radio-ready tenor, and a knack for conjuring up heartland appeal, even from his urban front porch. Ryan and his band return to a familiar spot for them — Denton’s Rockin’ Rodeo — for a local CD release. Ryan said Night Comes Falling, which was released on Tuesday, was a reinvention of an earlier project. “My first time in the studio, I just wasn’t very comfortable,” he said. “And unfortunately, that showed in the recording. … The tallest task going in [to the studio], what made me the most nervous, was getting down what I was feeling inside. “Going at it a second time, after the way those songs came out, it was kind of a heartbreaking situation. … I didn’t want to let the chance to try again get away.” When the artist went into the studio, he had the support of Tony Avezzano, the owner of Hat Tricks in Lewisville, and Wayne Foster. Avezzano and Foster had launched a booking and talent management company, something Ryan said he sees as an extension of the two men’s devotion to live music. Avezzano brings popular

The stage has attracted a number of bands from Denton’s indie scene. Ryan became part of that scene when he went to UNT, graduating in 2009. He didn’t pursue a music degree, but he did take music classes out of interest. He started a band and played in friends’ bands while in town. In 2010, Ryan won the Pickin’ Party singer-songwriter competition held by KFWR-FM “The Ranch” (95.9). Ryan wrote or co-wrote eight of the 11 tracks on Night. He covers Adam Hood and Blu Sanders’ “57 Songs” and “Only All the Time,” written by Stoney LaRue band member Casey Twist. “That song is quickly

becoming one of my favorite songs to sings,” Ryan said. “We recorded it acoustic. With guitar, a hand drum, the fiddle, a shaker and — oh yeah — we did use bass guitar. But I remember the first time I heard Casey sing it. It struck a nerve in my body. I would wake up with it in my head, singing it.” Night Comes Falling is a chronicle of boy-meets-girl, girl-lies-to-boy and boy-hitsthe-highway stories, with a dash of party music (“Baby Blue Jeans”) and the highway hypnosis antidote “57 Songs.” While the album would fit neatly into a popular collection of Red Dirt and Texas country music, Ryan’s vocals and his no-frills performance foster a depth and a soulfulness that are sometimes polished right off a studio

recording. With Ryan, the songs are easy to wrap your head around, and yet the listener can just as easily pick up on the musician’s artful restraint — something often associated with Jamey Johnson and Johnny Cash. Ryan co-produced the album with Foster and Eric Delegard, the producer and engineer of Denton’s Reeltime Audio, where Brave Combo and Cross Canadian Ragweed have recorded. Ryan said the studio time for Night was more comfortable, and he shares the credit with the musicians who joined him in recording, as well as Foster and Delegard. “On this album, what I wanted to do couldn’t have been more accurately represented. Everything that’s gone into this, everything all the musicians have done, it all shows,” Ryan said. “I’m really proud that I made this album, and that it’s what I wanted it to be.” Ryan said he’s starting to think about his next project. “They say the first day you release your album is the day you start thinking about the next album,” he said. “For the last six to eight months, I’ve been thinking about Night Comes Falling. I don’t have any themes or any solid ideas, but ask me again in a month, and that will probably have changed.” They’re with the band: Mike Ryan, vocals, rhythm guitar and lead guitar; Tom Young, lead guitar; Pat Young, bass guitar; and John “Fish” Hunt, drums. Details: Mike Ryan plays at 9:30 p.m. today at Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C. Cadillac Black and Ryan open for the night’s headliner, Whiskey Myers. OPENING FRIDAY Compliance (##) Pointless yet supposedly fact-based story about a man who prank-calls a fast-food restaurant and convinces the manager that one of her employees has stolen money from a customer. He then persuades the woman to humiliate the young female employee, detaining her, making her strip and searching her, all under the guise of police directions. Dumb. Rated R, 90 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Hello I Must Be Going (###1/2) Sensitive yet humorous work from director Todd Louiso about a deeply depressed 35-year-old woman (Melanie Lynskey) who moves in with her parents (Blythe Danner and John Rubinstein) when her husband leaves her. Once there, she begins an affair with a 19-year-old (Christopher Abbott), the son of one of her father’s business associates. The tricky situation seems to benefit both parties. Rated R, 95 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. Dredd 3D In a dystopian East Coast megalopolis, a futuristic cop and his rookie trainee take on a ruthless drug lord and her clan. With Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey and Wood Harris. Written by Alex Garland. Directed by Pete Travis. In 3D. Rated R, 98 minutes. — Los Angeles Times End of Watch (####) Mismatched buddy cop movie in which the cops record their daily activities while on patrol, from mercilessly teasing each other in the squad car between calls to tracking bad guys through the dangerous streets and narrow alleyways of South Central Los Angeles. After World War II, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix, left) goes adrift until he gets swept up in a cult led by Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in The Master.
‘Master’ and commanded P.T. Anderson’s take on 1950s cult is arresting, testing By Boo Allen Film Critic
The Master may be a test. The new psychological drama from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson might be testing its audience in much the same way the film’s Master (Philip Seymour Hoffman) tests his acolytes. The Master is Anderson’s sixth film, his first since 2007. Today, he may be the closest thing we have to Stanley Kubrick. Anderson pays incredible attention to detail, while taking his time to turn out striking visions that always demand attention, are visually arresting and are populated by
The Master Rated R, 137 minutes. Opens Friday.
conflicted characters. The Master begins at the end of World War II, as Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) leaves the military only to fall adrift, doing little more than drinking and having various sexual escapades. Eventually, he lands on a ship that takes Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman) and his devotees on what seems an endless cruise. Once ashore, Freddie stays with them and witnesses Dodd draw gullible weaklings into his mind-control silliness, which tests participants on their sincerity and willingness
to submit to him. During this first part, Anderson paints impressionistic portraits, giving short glimpses of Freddie’s destructive lifestyle, as well as gradually demonstrating how Freddie’s instability plays into Dodd’s manipulations. Simultaneously, Jonny Greenwood’s often eerie musical compositions complement the building portraits. Master Dodd’s early 1950s cult draws obvious parallels to L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology: Followers fawn at his feet while he babbles pseudo-intellectual nonsense. Anderson realizes this superficial personality defies belief but lets us know he shares the skepticism as Dodd’s son Val (Jesse Plemons) tells Freddie: “He’s making all this up as he goes along.” After spending much of the movie as an reprobate, Freddie
finally has an epiphany that turns him into a True Believer, a transformation that does not seem natural or important. And Dodd, for his part, never comes off as a fully drawn character, but remains unlikable and hard to spend much time around. While the film includes a sprawling cast, evocative period costumes and an expansive story, Anderson never arrives at any striking conclusions beyond chronicling Freddie’s change. Daniel Day-Lewis garnered a Best Actor Oscar in Anderson’s last film, There Will Be Blood, and this time, similar accolades may await Joaquin Phoenix, even though he delivers his dialogue through clenched teeth and spends much of the film acting mentally unbalanced. But that’s his character, however unpleasant he may be.

eary of the NBA-player-size amps? Ready for some sort of antidote to the return of scarves, black-rimmed eyeglasses and beards that have now settled over Denton as college students press valiantly toward midterms? Are you sick to death of turkey legs? We’ve heard the murmurings around town. As a barista set the milk frothing doohickey to “scream” at a local coffee house, we caught the end of what sounded like an exhausted
Fall festival at UNT College of Music celebrates artistic collaborations complaint. “The Denton Blues Fest? That was last weekend? Are we having music festivals year-round now?” No. Denton is not hosting music festivals every weekend. The next biggie is Denton’s Day of the Dead on Oct. 27. But now, the University of North Texas College of Music has gotten in on the festival action.
Denton, meet the Fall Festival of Orchestras. See what they did there? The College of Music has a season of festivals — but you won’t need earplugs, sunscreen or sensible shoes. You will need a sense of adventure and a craving for a loudness that will be, well, quiet. “Our fall season is especially remarkable for the musical collabora-
tions that are taking place,” said James Scott, the dean of the College of Music. Scott said he was especially pleased with the teamwork between the college and guest artists, and with the long-running partnership between the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Though the planned Oct. 8 performance by the Sichuan Conservatory of Music with conductors David Wong and Qiyuan Zhu has been canceled, the college will host five concerts in just over three weeks. All of the concerts will take place in Winspear Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 2100 Interstate 35E. To purchase tickets, call 940-3697802 or visit www.thempac. com. Among the most anticipated is the UNT Symphony Orchestra concert on Friday night, under the baton of Maestro David Itkin.

Itkin said the symphony orchestra dove into a challenge in rehearsing Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra for the first concert of the year. Commissioned in 1943 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s conductor, Serge Koussevitzky, the piece is among the composer’s most popular pieces. “This is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century,” Itkin said. “It broke new ground technically, and is an enormous challenge for the conductor and the orchestra.” Itkin described the Concerto for Orchestra as a “big” work with “an extraordinary range of emotional depth” and color. “One of the challenges of this piece is to get past the technical demands and focus on the extraordinary range of emotional nuances,” Itkin said. “You have to move beyond that and reach those things and play it for what it is and not [have it] be a piece that becomes about the technical nuance.” Bartok wrote the piece when he was in failing health and facing creeping poverty. For those reasons, Itkin said, it’s notable that the concerto isn’t morbid. Instead, it reaches for spiritual and emotional heights. The student musicians haven’t struggled with the piece. “In really big piece like this — yes, some of the musicians have played it before, but probably most have not — your task is to explore within your own

I think of conductors for whom I learned a piece, and I still remember those experiences. I remember them very well even now. With such talented students throwing themselves into this work, I think they’ll remember this experience as well.” Itkin said performing Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring for the first concert of the school year in 2011 spurred him to take a different approach to the orchestra’s academic year. “I started by thinking you needed to slide into the more sophisticated repertoire, and ramp up for the really challenging music,” he said. “I was wrong. With students of this caliber, you dive right in with challenging music. You don’t ramp up to it.” In addition to the Bartok concerto, the orchestra will perform Arturo Marquez’s Danzon No. 2 and Ludwig von Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Faculty member Adam Wodnicki will perform the
piano solo. “They love it,” Itkin said of students’ response to performing with faculty. “It’s really clear when a faculty member performs. After a performance, everyone comes up to the faculty guest and wants to talk about the piece.”
famous work. The concert orchestra will also perform Anton Arensky’s Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky, Op. 35 and Robert Kurka’s Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, Op. 34.

Conductor Clay Couturiaux will lead the UNT Concert Orchestra through three pieces, the highlight of which is Maurice Ravel’s arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Pictures is Couturiaux Mussorgsky’s most popular work, and Ravel arranged the composition in 1922 for Serge Koussevitzky. Scholars and critics praise Ravel for bringing the colors out of Mussorgsky’s
These young but popular ensembles perform a concert titled “Early Music From France.” Performing on instruments designed and built to sound as they would have in the baroque era, the orchestra will perform as well as accompany the Collegium Singers in the music of Henri Dumont, Jean-Marie Leclair, JeanBaptiste Lully, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Marin Marais and more. Paul Leenhouts conducts the Baroque Orchestra and Richard Sparks directs the Collegium Singers.
UNT hosts the Dallas Symphony Orchestra 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at Winspear Hall. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, UNT faculty and staff, and $10 for students and children.
The College of Music continues a 65-year partnership by hosting the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The program includes Hector Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Camille Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World). Alasdair Neale conducts, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra principal cellist Christopher Adkins will be featured. I The final concert of the Festival of Orchestras comes at 4 p.m. Oct. 14, the night of the College of Music’s annual gala. The centerpiece of the evening is “Symphony Meets Jazz,” which features symphonic music, jazz and American standards arranged by UNT faculty member Richard DeRosa. Gala patrons will also be treated to music by George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein.
Debate gets staged
MOVIES Continued from Page 8 Trouble With the Curve Corny, conventional and quite enjoyable father-daughter reconciliation story set mostly in the minor league baseball world of the South. Clint Eastwood plays an old-fashioned scout who disdains computers and fancy statistical charts in favor of his own time-tested instincts. Making his directorial debut, Eastwood’s longtime producer Rob Lorenz knows just how to pitch the story to take advantage of the humorous side of his star’s obstinate crankiness, and Amy Adams makes a good match as the career-driven daughter with festering resentments.
