Dog Days back with floppy ears, sniffing snouts and happy tails an’s best friend gets his day in the sun on Saturday. Dog Days of Denton starts first thing in the morning at the fairgrounds, and promises the traditional contests, exciting demonstrations and lots of things for local dogs to do. Organizers added two new features to the annual event. Alamar Farms will bring its four-legged star pupils to demonstrate herding techniques and practices. And if you’ve ever wondered how your dog knew you were making a turkey sandwich two rooms away, the Golden Triangle Dog Obedience Group will have volunteers on hand to explain “nose work” —

Alumna back to direct dark comedy at TWU ickie Washington is coming back to her alma mater to direct the opening play of the Texas Woman’s University 2014-15 season. Speech and Debate is in the vein of Moliere’s Tartuffe — shedding light on hypocrisy through comedy. In the comedy by Stephen Karam, characters Howie, Solomon and Diwata are on a quest for truth and recognition. Quirky Diwata decides that the only way to fully expose their small town’s do-as-I-say, not-asI-do ways is to stage an original musical adaptation of The Crucible. Only instead of keeping the cast of magic-fearing Calvinists, Diwata’s musical includes modern dance, amateur electronica, a time-traveling Mary Warren and a sexually confused Abraham Lincoln. Washington is a faculty member at the Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Speech & Debate features a cast of four TWU undergraduate students: Jordan Desmarais, David Freyman, Kolby Campbell and Alle Mims. TWU faculty, staff and students are on the directorial staff are: Michael Stephens, scenic designer; graduate student Kathryn Fullbright, lighting design; graduate student Misty Clark, costume design; undergraduate Chelsea Reeves, sound design; undergraduate Riley Payne; properties design and graduate student De Amber Houston-Dailey, choreography. Violet Goforth is the stage manager, and Selena Flores is the assistant stage manager.

OPENING FRIDAY The Boxtrolls ( ) A spooky surrealism has been the specialty of the Oregon-based animation studio Laika, purveyors of 3-D stop-motion (Coraline, ParaNorman). Boxtrolls is set in the British village of Cheesebridge, whose supposed scourge is the Boxtrolls, little nocturnal creatures who wear discarded boxes like a turtle shell and scavenge for mechanical parts. The Boxtrolls live peacefully underground with a child (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) they’ve raised from infancy. He begins to confidently explore Cheesebridge above ground and befriending a girl (Elle Fanning). Despite a rather uncertainly structured story, The Boxtrolls has its pleasantly demented charms. With Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade and Nick Frost. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — The Associated Press Hector and the Pursuit of Happiness ( ) Hector (Simon Pegg) works as a London psychiatrist but he wants more out of life. So, he leaves his girlfriend (Rosamund Pike) and takes an around-the-world trip to discover the true meaning of happiness. He travels to many picturesque sites to deliver a string of inane platitudes. Pretty scenery but empty movie. Directed and co-written by Peter Chelsom. Rated R, 114 minutes. At the Angelika Film Center in Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen My Old Lady Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas act out in Paris, but only the city is shown to its best effect. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — Los Angeles Times The Song An aspiring singer-songwriter struggling to escape the shadow of his father, a country music legend, finds romance and writes a breakout hit, only to grapple with stardom and temptation. With Alan Powell, Caitlin Nicol-Thomas and Ali Faulkner. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — LAT

Russian bad guy Teddy (Marton Csokas) sits down with McCall (Denzel Washington), whom he’s out to kill, in “The Equalizer.” Sony/Columbia Pictures

Killing machine

Washington just another cog in genre’s wheel

He’s a little older now, and he needs more time to warm up. He thinks things through, looks them over, and only when he’s ready does Denzel Washington find his inner-action hero in the new thriller The Equalizer. Washington reteams with Antoine Fuqua, the director who guided the actor to a Best Actor Oscar in Training Day. In The Equalizer, the two tackle some familiar material which, despite their impressive combined talents, they cannot elevate beyond a stack of genre cliches. The Equalizer loosely follows the recipe laid down by the television series of the same

name, which ran from 1985 to 1989 and starred Edward Woodward. To Fuqua and Washington’s credit, as well as screenwriter Richard Wenk, they diverge enough from the television original to make the movie their own. But they don’t move far enough away for the movie ever to challenge convention or to offer anything novel. Fuqua uses many of the early scenes to establish Robert

McCall (Washington) as a meticulous, obsessive man. Everything must be just so, even when at his daily, meaningless job at a Boston Home Depot-like home improvement center. So when someone (Chloe Grace Moretz) close to him suffers a beating, McCall takes action, wiping out a room full of Russian mobsters in 28 seconds. (He times it.) He twitches, he scowls, and then he moves in a flurry. Of course, McCall’s carnage sets off a retaliatory chain reaction for the rest of the film. For a while, the premise holds promise as McCall remains unaware. A sequence of scenes follows with an imported Russian bad guy, Teddy (Marton Csokas), out to find and kill McCall.

The Maze Runner In a post-apocalyptic future, an amnesiac teen wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys and has to find a way to escape. Rated PG-13, 113 minutes. — LAT No Good Deed A devoted wife and mother of two living in the suburbs of Atlanta fights to protect her family from a charming but dangerous escaped convict. With Idris Elba,

Taraji P. Henson and Leslie Bibb. Rated PG-13, 83 minutes. — LAT This Is Where I Leave You ( ) A good comedic cast comes together for an abundance of variously good and bad jokes spread throughout a predictable tale of a family reuniting after the death of their patriarch. Jason Bateman takes the highestprofile role as the most angst-ridden son, joined by his sister (Tina Fey),

two brothers (Corey Stoll and Adam Driver) and mother (Jane Fonda). Directed by Shawn Levy, with script from Jonathan Tropper from his own novel. Rated R, 103 minutes. — B.A. Tusk A podcaster trying to interview an enigmatic old seafarer is captured by the man, who intends to turn him into something inhuman. With Justin Long, Michael Parks and Genesis Rodriguez. Written and directed by

By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net

The Equalizer Rated R, 126 minutes Opens Friday.

Here, Fuqua revels in all the violence, letting McCall take down an army with varying degrees of style. But at its core, vigilante McCall becomes Charles Bronson, as The Equalizer devolves into yet another incarnation of Death Wish, with the bad guys deliciously disappearing. Despite the combustible material, Fuqua stays relatively tame — for him, anyway. He keeps his camera mostly steady, while also refraining from the quick, flashy cuts that can result in a chaotic jumble. At least here, we can see the mayhem. While it’s fun to watch the stoic Washington methodically go about his deadly business, The Equalizer never rises above its formulaic roots.

Kevin Smith. Rated R, 100 minutes. — LAT A Walk Among the Tombstones A former NYPD cop working as an unlicensed private investigator reluctantly agrees to help a heroin trafficker hunt down the men who kidnapped and brutally murdered his wife. With Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens and David Harbour. Rated R, 114 minutes. — LAT

NOW PLAYING The Giver ( ) Director Philip Noyce takes Lois Lowry’s popular young adult novel and renders a fairly mature offering. In a futuristic society devoid of emotion, a young man (Brenton Thwaites) discovers from the Giver (Jeff Bridges) that feelings can be good things. Meryl Streep plays the evil Chief Elder who keeps everyone in line. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. — B.A.

League pours a smooth drink, auctions baubles and dishes up barbecue By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

hen officers of the Denton Benefit League started casting around for a fresh event that would attract a younger set, it settled on fine spirits and casual clothes. “Boots, Bling & Bourbon” covers it all, said events coordinator Carrie Langford. Langford said the league elected to make last year’s winter fundraiser, Sensational Settings, its last. The event invited local nonprofits and supporters to design a table setting — formal or informal. Then it opened a dining room of table setting designs to the public. “It was the 10th year of Sensational Settings, and we were looking for another event,” Langford said. “The league

W

hosts two big fundraisers — the charity ball each spring, and then a less formal event in the fall or winter.” President-elect Cathy Bryce said barbecue and bourbon might be just the ticket to ping on the radars of young Denton families. “I think this introduces us to a whole new group of people to DBL, which exists for one reason, and that’s to support Denton County nonprofit agencies through financial grants,” Bryce said. The league distributes hundreds of thousands of dollars to nonprofits that work to develop health, education, cultural and civic endeavors. In addition to the fundraising events, the league raises money by selling ads in a yearly tabloid it distributes to its membership. Langford said Lantana Golf Club is outfitted in Southwest design and decor,

the choice setting for a boots-and-bourbon night out. The club’s kitchen will serve Texas barbecue, and Paradise Liquors will pour Texas liquors and bourbons. Swingle Collins & Associates will donate 100 to 150 cigars, and attendees can sample them on the golf club patio. A cash bar will be open, and University of North Texas soccer players will lead line dancing during the party. “This is a casual event,” Langford said. “It’s not fussy, and has some real guy appeal. Sensational Settings and the charity ball are probably more for women. Bourbon, barbecue and cigars? What’s not to like for the guys?” The league has always included men in its fundraisers — auctioning hunting trips, and offering golfing packages back See EVENT on 10
