lumni are in the spotlight next month in the Texas Woman’s University galleries. Painter Joseph Melancon, an alumnus of the TWU Master of Fine Arts program, will open a solo show Tuesday in the West Gallery. Meanwhile, the East Gallery in TWU’s art building will have a group show of TWU alumni — Sunny Jacquet, Penny Bisbee, Mark Collop, Tim Harding, Tammy Wascovich and Leigh Ann Williams. Melancon is a Florida artist with roots in Louisiana and a graduate art education at TWU. He works primarily in acrylics, looking at his art as a sort of personal archaeology that is more playful than serious. Melancon works in expressive realism, sometimes bringing three-dimensional objects into his painting to merge the subconscious and the observed. Bisbee and Jacquet have each stirred the imaginations of viewers and critics with their thoughtful compositions — Bisbee with her figures falling pell-mell through colorful views, Jacquet by using plump, audacious pears as metaphors in her design-oriented still works. Collop, on the other hand, injects both the humorous and the absurd into his installations, which make use of cartoon-like objects and familiar settings to catch viewers’ attention. Wascovich explores portraits on an expansive scale, and Williams works in bold brush strokes. Melancon will give a lecture about his work at 4 p.m. Tuesday, with an opening reception for all of the artists at 5 p.m.

Holding on to Hope, an oil on panel work by Sunny Jacquet, is an example of the manner in which the painter plucks objects from reality into a context that encourages observation. Paintings by Jacquet will be in the group exhibit by Texas Woman’s University alumni in the East Gallery next month.

Show rallies support for Russian punks

A

re there any women who make punk rock in Denton? From looks of the Saturday show at Rubber Gloves — a fundraiser for the three imprisoned members of the punk group Pussy Riot — it looks like the answer is no. The three Russian women were part of a group that performed a song in Moscow’s largest church that petitioned the Virgin Mary to rid the country of Vladimir Putin. That didn’t go over so well with the bureaucracy or the Orthodox Church. The trio was sentenced to two years in political prison for the crime of “hooliganism with religious hatred.” Ouch. Two local activist organizations — the local chapter of the International Socialist Organization and the Radical Alliance for Gender Equality — are billed as the organizers of a punk solidarity show featuring the not-female (but possibly

feminist) lineup of acts: the Grand Prairie area’s Electric Vengeance, Dallas-Denton four-piece Snatch Punch, Denton quintet Kid Beer, Sherman rabble-rousers Noise Tanks and McKinney’s the Kremlings. Muckrakers of all musical

tastes are invited to rage against the Russian machine on Saturday. Proceeds are earmarked for the Pussy Riot defense fund, and activist organizers will be selling Pussy Riot masks, patches and posters. Expect short songs, lots of

screaming and that weird ringing in your ears at this show. Cover is $5 for ages 21 and older, $7 for those younger than 21. Doors open at 9 p.m. Rubber Gloves is located at 411 E. Sycamore St.

Lane. Tickets cost $5 for all ages and can be purchased at the door or at the Guyer front office between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Call 940-369-1156 or email ecrotwell@dentonisd.org. 7:30 p.m. — Fight Boy Theatre

OPENING FRIDAY

Bill W. Documentary about Bill Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous and, perhaps, inspiration to all the 12-step programs that followed. First-time filmmakers Kevin Hanlon and Dan Carracino explore the man who has helped countless addicts overcome their demons — and keep them at bay — since 1935. Not rated, 104 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Hotel Transylvania Despite the proven talents of first-time feature director Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory), writers Peter Baynham (Arthur Christmas) and Saturday Night Live vet Robert Smigel, and a voice cast headed by Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, the collaboration falls flat virtually from the get-go, serving up halfhearted sight gags that have a habit of landing with an ominous thud. Overprotective daddy Dracula (Sandler) constructs a refuge of an exclusive resort where he and his monstrous ilk can feel free to be themselves. But a party crasher turns up in the form of Jonathan (Samberg), a slacker human backpacker who catches the eye of Dracula’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez). Rated PG, 91 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Pitch Perfect (####) Cheeky and snarky but with an infectious energy, this comedy set in the world of competing college a cappella groups makes us fall in love with the very thing it’s making fun of. It’s ridiculous and predictable but also just a ton of fun, so you may as well give up and give into your inner musical theater geek. The debut feature from director Jason Moore (Broadway’s Avenue Q) and writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock), based on the nonfiction book by Mickey Rapkin, feels like a mash-up of Glee and Revenge of the Nerds, with a soundtrack ranging from David Guetta and Bruno Mars to the Bangles and Simple Minds. Some performances will make you smile; others will give you chills. Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Hana Mae Lee. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — The Associated Press Won’t Back Down (##1/2) The focus of this save-our-school drama practically assures it will fail to join the ranks of great, or even good, education tales. The movie takes the story out of the classroom and into the halls of bureaucracy, leaving

enton’s Cinemark 14 will join select cinemas around the country in screening “TCM Presents E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial 30th Anniversary Event” on Wednesday. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, directed by Steven Spielberg, originally opened in theaters in 1982. The film garnered four Academy Awards and is listed as the fourth most successful all-time movie in the domestic box office. E.T. is the story of Elliot (Henry Thomas), a young boy who meets and forges a relationship with a lost alien. With the help of his siblings, Elliot attempts to help the alien find his way home. Universal Pictures has partnered with NCM Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies to bring a new digitally remastered version of the film to theaters around the country. Denton’s Cinemark 14 will offer a 2 p.m. matinee screening and a 7 p.m. show. The screening will include a

aul McCartney, left, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr hoot and holler from the roof of a coach bus in Magical Mystery Tour. The Beatles film was first broadcast on Boxing Day in 1967 — in black and white. Now, a handful of theaters are screening a restored print of the movie, which captures the Fab Four on a surreal version of the British tradition of a coach trip to the seaside. The film, which includes music from the iconic album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, was conceived and directed by the band. Television critics panned Magical Mystery Tour, which was consequently not broadcast in the U.S., but it’s been fully restored with a 5.1 soundtrack. MOVIES Continued from Page 9 almost every kid behind to center on two plucky parents battling entrenched administrators and union leaders to turn around a failing school. So essentially, it’s a school board meeting. Or school bored. Despite earnest performances from Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis as a pair of moms leading the fight, the movie lives down to its bland, usagainst-them title with a simpleminded assault on the ills of public schools that lumbers along like a math class droning multiplication tables. NOW PLAYING Dredd 3D (###1/2 ) A wickedly dark comic streak breaks up the vivid violence and relentless bleakness of this 3-D incarnation of the cult-favorite British comic series 2000 A.D. Karl Urban stars as the stoic Judge Dredd, an enforcer who serves as judge, jury and executioner in a dystopian future. Olivia Thirlby has a calm yet confident presence as a rookie judge who’s assigned to Dredd for training one particularly bloody day. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, whose job is to dispose of bodies for criminals from the future, in Looper.

Thrown for a loop By Boo Allen

Time-travel thriller is befuddling good fun

The best thing about the future is that people will no longer wear neckties. That seems to be about it, anyway, according to Looper, the new time-travel thriller from writer-director Rian Johnson (Brick). Maybe the future will surprise us and bring more rewards, but it’s hard to tell in this confused and jumbled film that is long on action and intrigue but short on coherence. But that’s the way it is with time-travel movies, as all rules of physics, logic and consistency take a merry holiday. Explaining a looper is not hard until one is pressed for

details. In a future society with the ability to time-travel, organized crime lackeys find bodies hard to dispose of, so they are sent into the past where a looper makes them disappear. But certain rules apply about how long a looper can live, what happens when a body is not disposed of properly and other contingencies that may make sense to Johnson but will leave his audience a

step or two behind. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a strung-out looper who understands the long-term drawbacks to his job well enough to stash away his earnings. But his riches are threatened when another looper, Seth (Paul Dano), botches a job and turns to Joe for help — a request not taken kindly by Joe’s boss from the future, Abe (Jeff Daniels). Johnson combines all this plotting with yet another visitor from the future, played by Bruce Willis, who complicates everything even further. This first part flies by, with multiple face-offs, chases, sexual encounters and various other cinematic distractions. The sec-

shine masters who kept the Virginia hills good ’n’ liquored up during Prohibition. The brothers (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke) find their tidy little operation threatened when a corrupt Chicago lawman (Guy Pearce) swoops in to shut them down. Rated R, 116 minutes. — AP The Master (##1/2) Philip Seymour Hoffman plays an L. Ron Hubbard-like cult leader in the early 1950s who

draws many to him, including an unstable ex-serviceman (Joaquin Phoenix). This sixth film from Paul Thomas Anderson sports a wide, talented cast, an attention to period details, and some flavorful settings and costumes. Rated R, 137 minutes. — Boo Allen Resident Evil: Retribution In a world devastated by a zombie virus, one woman scours the globe to save

humanity and stop an evil corporation. With Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Sienna Guillory and Kevin Durand. ond part changes tone and becomes more intimate — at least compared to the first segment — when Joe arrives at an isolated farmhouse inhabited by Sara (Emily Blunt) and her 10-year-old-son, Cid (Pierce Gagnon). The pair play a pivotal part in almost explaining the interlocking identities of many of the characters. Like almost any time-travel movie, no claims are made that everything adds up, much less makes sense. So one pleasurable way to approach Looper is to accept it as a consistently engaging Hollywood thriller with a good cast, adequate special effects, and a story that you don’t have to understand to enjoy. statistical charts in favor of his own time-tested instincts. Making his directorial debut, Eastwood’s longtime producer Rob Lorenz knows just how to pitch the story to take advantage of the humorous side of his star’s obstinate crankiness, and Amy Adams makes a good match as the career-driven daughter with festering resentments. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — H.R.

aren MacIntyre bought a modest building on Malone Street 10 years ago. She named it Green Space Arts Collective. Her hope, she said, was to develop an alternative space for the ever-changing and often transient independent performing groups that bloom and fade in Denton. “There has always been such a need for space for all of these

Decade-old space nurtures performing arts groups groups,” MacIntyre said. “What I never dreamed was that not only would the space be an alternative venue for rehearsals and performances, but I’ve even had a wedding here. Sundown has been here for six seasons.” Sundown Collaborative Theatre, an independent performing arts and theater com-

pany, is indeed one of the groups MacIntyre counts among her “regulars.” MacIntyre, a ballet teacher and dance faculty member at the University of North Texas, said she knew she wanted to have a studio to be her teaching base during the day. Though most of her classes are taught on the UNT campus these days,

the larger part of the one-story building at 529 Malone St. is her studio — with a small lobby, a modest studio with mirrors on the wall, and a few rooms that double as tiny dressing rooms. MacIntyre bought the building in 2002. “I’d known for a long time that I wanted the building,” she

said. “When Eleanor Green, a woman who was really important to dance in Denton for years and years and years, died, I thought I should find out if it was available. And it was.” Green, a dance teacher, had 529 Malone St. constructed as a studio in 1970. MacIntyre named the building for Green and got to work. Ten years later, business is See GREEN SPACE on 12

good, MacIntyre said. And business means renting the space to groups and teachers for affordable rates. “If I wasn’t careful, the space would be in use day and night,” she said. “I’m careful not to book the place every hour of the business day and every weekend, because I want the place to be available for other groups.” MacIntyre will open the space on Saturday a bit before noon. From noon to 6:30 p.m., the space will be open for children and adults to try out the classes for free. At 7 p.m., the companies that teach and rehearse in the space will present a celebratory performance for Green Space’s 10th birthday. After the performance, everyone is welcome to join the after-party, a dance and music jam. MacIntyre said the birthday gives her a feeling of coming full circle. A Denton native, MacIntyre attended the North Texas Laboratory School that was once on the university campus. “My graduating class was the last class to attend there, and now I’m literally working right around the corner,” she said. For the first time since the collective has been running, MacIntyre said she had all of the leaders of the companies that use the building meet. Sure, they clarified some policies and procedures, but MacIntyre said she had a different motive for assembling

And you know what? Everyone seemed really excited to meet everyone else,” she said. She doesn’t plan to change too much in the future. “I don’t see myself having a board run the space or the collective,” she said. “I think it’s working well now. I just hope I can continue to keep offering an alternative space — something between the college campuses and the downtown area of Denton — that is affordable.
