aybe not everyone and his dog will be at Barktoberfest on Saturday, but those who want to support the Denton Humane Society are invited. It’s the seventh year for this fall benefit for Denton’s furry, fourlegged friends, and according to society Vice President Krisanne Key, “It’s like a big party.” There will be “tons of dogs” at the event, said Key, who expects a crowd of up to 400 people, not to mention their pets. Key says it will be a “fun day for the family,” where “kids get to do fun things with their

pets.” Activities for both children and canines are planned, such as fur-painting for pups and face-painting for people. Dogs can dress up for a costume contest, compete to be named the most talented and dance with their owners for prizes. Goody bags and door prizes will benefit pets as well as their owners, with items such as collars and leashes, food samples from Science Diet and other donated items from Petco. Undoubtedly the dogs’ favorite event is the Weenie Round-up — where happy hounds snarf the most hot dogs to win. Their owners won’t go

According to Key, funds from this event will help pay for rescue animals who need extra medical attention for ailments such as heartworm and canine parvovirus, commonly known as parvo. The nonprofit also runs special low-cost spay/ neuter programs “to help try to control the overpopulation problem,” Keys said, and offers some assistance to people who are otherwise unable to properly care for their pets. The Denton Humane Society does not have its own facility, and currently the organization has 22 foster dogs and 18 foster cats cared for by volunteers. These animals are fully vetted and prospective applicants are carefully screened before any adoption can take place. illustrations to photo spreads. His illustrations showcase the clothes of the years he worked for retailers, but they also respect the principles of art and graphic design. His figures are predictably elegant — as an illustrator, Howard was helping his clients sell clothing, taste and a lifestyle. Howard’s subjects are active, attractive and set off by his artist’s perspective. Howard will give an artist’s talk at 7 p.m. today at the arts center. A University of North Texas program wants locals to “Unlock Your Funny” to help groom future graduates for the workforce. The UNT Professional Leadership Program is hosting a Whose Line Is It Anyway?style evening to benefit the program, which pairs UNT students with an executive mentor for a year. The event puts UNT College of Business Dean Finley Graves, Athletic Director Rick Villarreal and student body President Kevin Sanders Graves in the limelight for a night of improvisational comedy. The event is coordinated by Claire Billingsley, co-owner of Locked Out Villarreal Comedy, who also mentors students in the program. The program hopes that “Unlock Your Funny” will be a yearly event tied to a home football game. This week, organizers said to expect clean jokes about Cajuns as a nod to the UNT vs. the University of Louisiana at Lafayette game this weekend. The event is 7 p.m. today in the Lyceum, on the third floor of the University Union, 1155 Union Circle. Tickets are $12 at www.LOLwithLOC.com, or $10 at the program office, in Room 214A in the UNT Business Building. — Lucinda Breeding

rom the tiny town of Kasilof, Alaska, the Wagner Logic comes to Andy’s Bar tonight as part of a monthlong tour of the Lower 48 states.

The band — Sonny Ogle, Jeremy Wagner and James Glaves — comes through town peddling the merits of its new self-titled album. Like a simmering cauldron, the Wagner Logic’s energy always teeters on the brink of exploding into a hard-rock feel. While the songs never blow up into an all-out head-banging riot, listeners want for nothing. Ethereal and distant vocals are expertly blended on a background of melodic pop guitars and drums that deliver like machine guns, steady and powerful. Lyrics that explore a world of angst provide a stark, almost counterintuitive contrast to the upbeat rhythms and riffs. The album, cut in the basement of a cabin in Kasilof, is a testament to the group’s ability. Flawlessly engineered, it’s impossible to tell it was selfproduced. eon Indian markets itself as a Brooklyn band, but frontman Alan Palomo said he can trace some of the sounds from the band’s debut album Psychic Chasms to his days in Denton. Palomo, who refers to himself as a “wily Mexican by way of Texas,” came to Denton in 2006 to study film at the University of North Texas. He left to follow the call of music in Austin in 2008. He was there for a year until he left for New York. His time in Denton stuck, creatively.

“It’s kind of weird,” Palomo said. “I felt like my decision to get into music was affected by that time of my life. At UNT when you’re studying film, they almost didn’t let you get your hands on a camera until like your third year. But it did affect me, because I really saw all of those songs from Psychic Chasms before I heard them.” After nearly a solid year of touring, Neon Indian is coming back to North Texas on Tuesday night for a gig at Dallas’ Granada Theatre with Prefuse 73 and Miniature Tigers. The album Psychic Chasms, which led to a remix album, is a trip through Palomo’s subconscious, where mood and motive meet and manifest themselves into sweet synth melodies, “found sounds” and narratives that rise above the catchy narcotic references (like the song “Should Have Taken Acid With You”). Neon Indian is Palomo’s brainchild, but live, Palomo recruits drummer Jason Faries, guitarist Ronald Gierhart and keyboardist and one-time Denton musician Leanne Macomber. The group stopped in Denton during this year’s North by 35 Music Conferette — an indie music festival recently recoined as 35 Conferette — and packed Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on the final evening of the fest. Palomo cops to inspiration from 1980s music, when bands like OMD, Scritti Politti and the Thompson Twins set tear-stained songs of loss against a backdrop of music that softened inspiring emotional blows with chilled-out synthesizer sounds, drum machine beats and plasticky polish.

Palomo isn’t a 1980s acolyte trying to bring British New Romantic tracks back from the dead. “A lot of people assume that I am really nostalgic about ’80s music, and that I’m sitting around watching Back to the Future,” Palomo said. “I’m really not. “There are some things that are personal for me that are nostalgic, but when I started working on Psychic Chasms, it wasn’t about any of that. I’d say [the 1986 New Order song] ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ really probably inspired me to get involved in music. I still remember listening to that song in my dad’s convertible, driving all over Mexico. But at the

“I think as far as restrictions [on making music], I don’t think we’ve ever talked about that. When we’re on stage, we want to get to that point where we’re just vibing it out. I think we sort of encourage each other to add anything to the set.” Palomo said Neon Indian has Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to thank for a nice slice of exposure in the last year. Fallon reportedly heard the band on a New York radio station, and liked what he heard. Producers called Palomo to feel him out for a future date, but when a musical guest had to cancel, producers asked if the band would consider appearing the next day.

time, I didn’t even know who did the song.” Psychic Chasms started out as an antidote to the work he was doing with his other projects, Ghosthustler and VEGA. “That was part of the whole motivation and conception of Neon Indian,” Palomo said. “I was doing this other project of mine — it was all really tedious deal. It was one of those projects where’d you sit there and work on the same piece of music, and you’d sit there for hours and tailor drums. “Neon Indian was, for me, a creative exercise. The idea was to just try to get a song out in a day. So I sat down and went to work. The next day, I had ‘6669,’ then I had ‘Deadbeat Summer.’” When Neon Indian stopped in Denton, Palomo, Gierhart, Macomber and Faries staged a set that exceeded expectations of an electronic group. Neon Indian dispensed with anything chilly or prefab, and ripped into a show that sounded hot and organic. Palomo said part of the heat Neon Indian generates live is for the audience, but it’s just as much for the band. “By now, ‘Deadbeat Summer’ is white noise for me,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine trying to do something totally like the record. What you hear at the shows come from when we’re trying to make it new and make it palatable for people who want to have fun, but also do something that keeps the band from being bored. Leanne, Ronald and Jason all come from different musical backgrounds, and that feeds into it.

Palomo said performing on the show was unlike any other gig. “The pressure was, well, it was surreal,” he said. “The other band members don’t remember doing that show. “I remember seeing [Fallon] holding the album, and that was really iconic, seeing him hold this big album. Then when we started, it’s like the adrenaline took over. It’s all a blur.” Fallon wasn’t the only fan with a big audience. Pitchfork, an online music and culture magazine, ranked several tracks from Neon Indian’s album among the best of 2009. Spin magazine praised the album. The band recently spent a week on the road with Phoenix, the new stateside darling that caught on when the French band’s track “1901” was used in a television spot. Palomo heads to Finland before the year is out to record the next album, and then he’ll turn his attention toward the next VEGA record. Inspiration has hit during the year, but Palomo said he’s determined to let those ideas do what they will. “We do have a tendency to run, you know?” he said. “You do have ideas and impulses that you follow before you hit a wall when you’re traveling. ... I pretty much decided for the next Neon Indian [project], I’m not going to follow any of those right now. I won’t deal with the next project until I’m in the recording studio.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

OPENING FRIDAY Case 39 (##) Long-delayed horror yarn starring Renee Zellweger as a child social worker who takes in a young girl (Jodelle Ferland) after investigating a case of parental abuse. But her life later becomes a nightmare when she finds out the girl is not as sweet or innocent as she seems. Despite a predictable premise, the film generates some decent suspense for the first half, only to fly completely off the rails as its plot twists become more ridiculous. Rated R, 109 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Hatchet II (##1/2) Writer-director Adam Green follows up his slasherhorror original with more of the same. Enticed by a $5,000 bounty, a group of brain-dead low-lifes traipse into a Louisiana swamp to try to kill or capture a maniacal ax murderer. Bad idea. Green delivers plenty of blood and guts, and, surprisingly, consistent light-hearted humor. Unrated, 89 minutes. — Boo Allen Jack Goes Boating (###) Oscarwinning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman makes his directorial debut with this low-key character drama about a New York limo driver (Hoffman) who begins dating a funeral home employee (Amy Ryan), only to have the relationship bring out his various neuroses and inadequacies. Hoffman has some trouble freeing the material from its stagebound roots, but solid performances help give the film intimacy and emotional resonance. Rated R, 89 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Let Me In (###1/2) Mostly straightforward remake of last year’s clever Swedish thriller Let the Right One In is a tense and touching story of a preteen outcast (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who falls for the new girl next door, even when he finds out her true identity as a vampire. Writer-director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) adds some stylish touches without making any noteworthy improvements upon the original. His film works primarily because the source material is so good. Rated R, 116 minutes. — T.J. Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives (#) You know what you’re getting into with this high-camp, low-budget revenge comedy that’s intended to be a throwback to grindhouse exploitation films. West Wing, Sports Night), a parallel maestro at the verbal. Plus, Sorkin’s script avoids excessive technical jargon, making the film understandable to anyone. Justin Timberlake appears as Napster founder Sean Parker, a prominent figure in creating the creeping turmoil. And as Zuckerberg, Eisenberg has finally found a film matched to his manic mannerisms. In a film in which the main event is people-watching, Eisenberg is the main attraction, with his convincingly smarmy portrayal of an unlikable character — but one who is undoubtedly the smartest person in the room.

t turns out, in the end, it was all about sex. The phenomenon known as Facebook, as seen in the exciting (yes, exciting) new film The Social Network, sprang into existence because a male Harvard undergraduate thought it might be a better way to meet females. That might not be the exact reason and, in reality, it might not have happened exactly as portrayed in the film, but no matter, because director David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) has rendered a fast-paced, compelling, extremely witty interpretation of Facebook’s torturous creation. Fincher’s own creation rapidly runs nonstop, cutting from late 2003 when Mark

Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) began experimenting with different formats to come up with what became the ubiquitous social network to some time later when Zuckerberg is being sued by several people. This quick flipping between dates challenges the viewer and demands attention to keep track of the people, events and chronology. But Fincher, following Aaron Sorkin’s script from Ben Mezrich’s nonfiction book The Accidental Billionaires, exe-

cutes this narrative deftness with a dexterity few working directors could match. For such a relatively straightforward story, the film is amazingly complex. Zuckerberg’s kernel of an idea for a social network gets a boost when approached by the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence), who suggest a similar commercial venture. Almost simultaneously, Zuckerberg recruits his roommate, and only friend, Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield, soon to be the new Spider-Man), to finance another startup that would only belong to the two of them. Even when confined to dorm rooms or conference rooms, Fincher shows his excellence as a visual master. But here, he has the advantage of a machine gun script from Sorkin (TV’s

a group of transgender women setting out to avenge the murder of a friend by violent means, but the point more than anything is to be shocking instead of suspenseful. Yet the film is amateurish, unfunny and horribly paced even by its low standards. Not rated, 91 minutes. At the

rates and teacher incompetence. Through a series of personal stories, the film presents more problems than practical solutions, but it offers a compelling call to action that’s both entertaining and infuriating. Rated PG, 102 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J.

Frightening events turn annoyance into terror as the strangers begin to realize that one of their number is Lucifer himself. Story by M. Night Shyamalan. Rated PG-13, 80 minutes. Easy A (###) There are some big laughs in this otherwise shallow high school satire, loosely based on The Scarlet Letter, about a teenager (Emma Stone) who starts a rumor about losing her virginity that she hopes will make her popular but instead gives her a different label, especially for her strait-laced rival (Amanda Bynes). The script has plenty of witty banter (especially among the supporting roles) and makes enough clever tweaks to the source material to overcome its predictability. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes. — T.J. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (##) Innovative visuals highlight this 3-D animated adventure from director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) about a pair of young owls who grow up on opposite sides of a legendary good-versus-evil battle for control of the species. There are some spectacular 3-D flying sequences to behold, but the muddled story is probably too dark and scary for younger kids. So what’s left is basically a talking-owl movie for adults. Good luck with that. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3-D In a world overrun with the walking dead, Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her battle against Umbrella Corp., rounding up survivors along the way. Joined by an old friend, Alice and her group set out for a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles. Instead of sanctuary, they find the city overrun with zombies, and a trap about to spring. Rated R, 96 minutes. The Town (####) Ben Affleck directed and co-wrote this heist thriller set in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood. He heads a gang of four locals who commit bank and armored car robberies. He also falls for a bank manager (Rebecca Hall) who becomes unwittingly involved with him. Fast, well-paced and finely acted with a good cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively and Chris Cooper. Rated R, 124 minutes. — B.A. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (###) Oliver Stone follows up his 1987 original with Michael Douglas again playing Gordon Gekko. Shia LaBeouf is Jake Moore, a young Wall Street go-getter engaged to Gekko's daughter (Carey Mulligan). Moore seeks revenge against a Wall Street lion (Josh Brolin) for helping to destroy his firm. Well-paced and engaging despite the convoluted storyline and contrived twists. Rated PG-13, 133 minutes. — B.A. You Again Marni (Kristen Bell) is horrified to learn that her brother’s fiancee is Joanna, the nemesis of her teen years, and she plans to expose Joanna’s evil side to her family. The situation explodes with the arrival of Joanna’s aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), who was the high school rival of Marni’s mother (Jamie Lee Curtis). Rated PG, 105 minutes.
