How to make your yard more environmentally friendly It’s easy to make your home more eco-friendly, and your yard is a great place to start. This season, take steps to limit your home’s impact on the local environment by giving your outdoor spaces an earth-friendly makeover. Limit Yard Waste When the leaves fall from the trees, you may be dealing with extra bundles of yard waste. Take steps to handle the debris properly. Never throw your leaves and trimmings out with the garbage. Instead, try composting what you can at home or bagging the waste to use as mulch on an as-needed basis. If your community has special pick-up days for yard waste, take advantage of those. Additionally, you can leave some clippings on the lawn to act as an organic fertilizer and provide the soil with nutrients. Be Bird-Friendly An eco-friendly yard will contain plenty of vegetation that provides cover and food for such wildlife as birds. Unfortunately
your home itself can present a threat to their safety. Millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. You can protect birds from this fate by applying decals to your windows that contain a component that reflects ultraviolet sunlight. Try placing WindowAlert decals every few feet on your glass and applying WindowAlert UV liquid in the remaining areas. This will create a visual barrier that only birds can see and that helps them avoid striking glass. Because the UV reflectivity may fade over time based on exposure, replace the decals every six to nine months and reapply the liquid every three months. For more application tips and information about bird safety, visit www.WindowAlert.com. Be Flexible The mark of a beautiful, ecofriendly yard is not necessarily a conventional lawn. Fuel, water and a lot of time are necessary to maintain green grass. In at least some parts of your property,
consider alternative ground cover that has a lower carbon footprint to maintain. Ornamental grasses, shrubs, thyme and other colorful, low-maintenance plants that don’t grow very tall can make for a sustainable alter-

native that’s just as visually appealing as grass. You may already be taking steps inside your home to be more planet-friendly, such as recycling, composting food scraps, using LED bulbs and turning off
appliances when they aren’t in use. Now it’s time to take your greener living campaign to your home’s outdoor spaces by protecting wildlife and tweaking the way you maintain your lawn. -StatePoint

Upgrading your kitchen? Whether you’re a passionate chef and a regular host, or you cook simple meals for just your family, you know that a highly serviceable kitchen can mean the difference between easy meal prep and a headache. A big part of this equation is your cooking appliances. If you’re in the market for a new cooktop, oven or range, don’t neglect electric options. Even ardent gas fans will be interested to learn how new innovations in electric cooking appliances are making kitchens more functional and versatile. With that in mind, here are some things to consider before upgrading your kitchen with new appliances: • Easy cleaning: Time spent in the kitchen crafting meals for your loved ones can be a pleasurable experience. But few would say the same for cleaning. Opt for appliances that offer stress-free cleaning func-
tions. Electric ovens, for example, tend to be much easier to clean than the gas variety with the benefit of powerful selfcleaning at the touch of a button. Also look for features such as removable glass doors, that can make cleanup a cinch. • Even cooking: Roasting a chicken tonight? An electric oven means less monitoring of your dinner, as such appliances boast more even cooking with the added advantage of convection fans. Cooking on the stove-top? Electric heat can be just as or more precise and consistent with modern pot-sensing technology, high power elements and quality cookware. • Versatility: When shopping for appliances, keep fast, efficient cooking top of mind. For example, ILVE offers a range that features induction cooking technology, which uses heat generated from magnetics instead
of coils for the fastest heat transfer of any cooking surface. The ILVE Induction range is equipped with child safety features, high power cooking elements, and pot-sensor technology. Additionally, a scope of functions can be performed with the multi-function convection oven, included rotisserie accessory and full-width warming drawer. To learn more, visit www.ilveappliances.com. • Craftmanship: For a more functional, beautiful kitchen, it’s all about finding the intersection of cutting edge technology and craftsmanship. Consider checking out a brand such as Verona, at www.VeronaAppliances.com, an Italian manufacturer of kitchen appliances that applies extensive cooking and design expertise to make ranges, cooktops and ovens. If you’re upgrading your kitchen don’t make the assump-

8 Tips to help rid your home of autumn allergens Real Estate
09 3 14
Many people think of allergies as a spring problem, but most sniffle sufferers know that fall can pose its own issues. Mold and ragweed are common fall allergy triggers, as well as dust mites, which are naturally more prevalent in the home during the drier months. “You can turn your home into a safe haven from fall allergens with regular, strategic cleaning and a few preventive measures,” says Robin Wilson, an interior design expert and an ambassador with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. To help make your home more comfortable this season, Wilson is offering some fall cleaning tips to eliminate allergens and maintain a clean and healthy space: • Wash your bedding. Mattress and pillow protectors will help control dust mites. As an added precaution, wash your bedding in warm or hot water every month and replace pillows every three years. • Check for mold. Moisture
breeds mold, so make sure to scan the inside of dishwashers, under the fridge in the water pan and in sink and bath drains. Change water dispensers and icemaker filters on a regular basis. • Vacuum frequently. Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting, tile or hardwood
floors, it’s important to eliminate dust and dirt. Vacuum, mop or steam clean flooring regularly. “Use a vacuum with a highefficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which captures small particles such as allergens, irritants and pollutants,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic
MC-UL429 Vacuum has a HEPA filter and accessories that allow you to be more thorough and get into tight corners. This vacuum also comes with an attachment that pulls pet hair -another potential allergen -- out of upholstered surfaces. More information can be found at www.shop.panasonic.com.
We
• Wash or freeze stuffed toys. If your child sleeps with their favorite stuffed animals, you should frequently wash or freeze them in a plastic bag for 48 hours. This will lower the level of dust mites which can trigger asthma and allergies. • Use Slipcovers. Slipcovers have come a long way in the last 10 years. Since they can be cleaned regularly and more easily than upholstery, consider using them on sofas and other furniture. • Keep ragweed outside. After spending time outside, have your child leave any clothing or sports equipment close to the entrance of the home to avoid tracking irritants throughout rooms. “Just because the pollen count isn’t through the roof doesn’t mean you can’t fall prey to allergies,” says Wilson. “With regular cleaning, you can manage the irritants in your home and make it a more breathable place.” -StatePoint

Would upgrading your lawn mower make yard care easier? While gardening may be the top hobby in America, mowing the lawn is rarely at the top of most homeowners’ list of fun tasks. With this in mind, more are using commercial lawn mowers to make faster work of this chore. But are commercial mowers right for home use and your home, in particular? There are several benefits to using one at home: • Increased Productivity: Commercial mowers make quick work of mowing even large properties. The enhanced maneuverability of commercial zero-turn mowers allow you to easily mow around landscaping features and flower beds. • Increased Cut Quality: Enhance the appearance of your property with a professional quality cut. • Increased Durability: A commercial mower may be the last mower most home gardeners will need to buy. Industrial
engine and drivetrain components, along with heavy-duty frames and cutting decks, deliver higher levels of performance with greater durability and reliability than consumer mowers.
• Increased Comfort: Commercial mowers have comfort enhancements for professional landscapers who typically operate them all day long -- including upgraded seats with
bump isolating suspension. This increased comfort and control can also make mowing less of a chore for homeowners. More information about selecting a commercial mower is

What to know about automating your home 11 The “connected home” is one of the biggest areas of technical innovation today, with smart appliances, learning thermostats, app-driven lights, and intelligent door locks taking center stage in home improvement stores and magazines. In fact, by 2017, an estimated 36 million homes throughout North America and Europe will be smart. For some consumers, the concept of a “smart home” can be overwhelming. Here are a few things to keep in mind: The Basics Home automation gives you remote and automatic control of a wide array of devices in your home -- it’s ideal for convenience and control, and some devices can help with money savings. Home automation can also alert you to events that you might want to know about while you’re gone, like leaks, kids arriving home or security breaches. For your furry family member, your smart home can distribute pre-determined
amounts of food on a schedule so you don’t have to worry about your pet missing dinner while you’re stuck in traffic. Is it Right for Your Home? Not everyone is in a place to install a full home automation system -- literally and financially, as apartment living, renting, low cash flow, expensive installation fees and advanced technical set-up can all be limitations. However, with stand-alone home automation devices and apps, you can make your home smart without integrating a whole-home automation network. For example, smart locks, lighting, irons, coffee makers, security cameras and refrigerators can all be controlled by smartphones without the need for a fully integrated system. First Things First In a recent analyst report from NextMarket, the smart lock market will grow to $3.6 billion worldwide by 2019. With security and access control lead-
ing smart home product adoption, a logical place to start is at your front door. Consider trying Kwikset Kevo, powered by UniKey, which was the first smart lock on the market. It makes it possible to open the door by simply touching the deadbolt -without removing you smartphone from your purse or pocket. Via the Kevo app, users can grant and revoke access to the house electronically, view a lock history and get notified when someone locks or unlocks the door without connecting to the home network or a power source. Available at many major retailers, it installs easily, within a few minutes, with just a Phillips head screwdriver, making it an excellent example of how one product can usher your home into the era of automation. From there it’s easy to move on to take smarter control of your home appliances and lighting, and you can make as many

or as few changes as your budget and imagination allow. Smart home solutions are granting homeowners access to information and features that were previously unavailable. Bottom line: you don’t have to be
rich or have a fully-connected home to enjoy the benefits. If you’re considering getting on board the trend, do your research and find the best technology and products for you. -StatePoint

RE/MAX Cross Country holds fundraiser for children’s home Since January of this year, agents and staff at RE/MAX Cross Country have been hard at work raising money for Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home. Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home in Denton was chosen out of many deserving charities in the area. This facility provides emergency shelter as well as long-term residential care for children and adolescents. They also provide singleparent family housing and support as well as counseling and other services to heal and strengthen families throughout the community.
A gala was held on Thursday, July 31, celebrating RE/MAX Cross Country’s fundraiser drive, which included heartwarming presentations from Cumberland’s representatives. Richard Brown, President of Cumberland, introduced the staff and counselors as well as board members who were in attendance. The Gala received an overwhelming response from businesses and individuals who donated silent auction items, gift cards and prizes for the many raffles that were held. As winning raffles and silent-auction items were announced, guests enjoyed a delicious meal
supplied by The Village Grill and Shellman’s Fine Wine and Spirits. Also in attendance was Santa, who was fresh from his vacation in Hawaii. Santa was the inspiration for the fundraiser. Everyone at RE/MAX Cross Country was heartbroken with the cancelation of their annual Santa Party as a result of the massive ice storm that paralyzed North Texas last December. “This has been a tradition spanning over thirty years allowing generations of families an opportunity to bring their children to the office to meet Santa and receive gifts” says Gary Kuhatschek. Feeling the need to give back to the community, it was an easy decision to hold the biggest fundraiser in RE/MAX Cross Country history. “We are so proud of our agents and staff for all the hard work they put in to make this possible” says Gary Kuhatschek and Ron Morris co-owners of RE/MAX Cross Country. “From the beginning our volunteers
jumped in and rose to the challenge to help such a good organization and cause”. Many individuals and businesses were a huge part in the success of this fundraiser. First United Bank and Freedom Title of Highland Village contributed generous gifts. Thurston Manufacturing has been working with Cumberland staff and will manufacture bedroom furniture for each of their three cottages in October. The children were also included in the decision making process. Windham Construction has donated their labor and is in process of painting the interior of each cottage on Cumberland’s campus thanks to Sherwin-Wil-
liams’ Flower Mound store that donated 75 gallons of paint. The generosity of those who have helped and donated ensured not only a memorable event, but will make an impact on the needed services for children and families that Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home offers. RE/MAX Cross Country is located at 1990 Justin Road, Highland Village. You can reach them at 972-317-9586 or visit their website at www.rmccdfw.com where you can still make an online donation, just follow the Santa in the Summer link. - Story submitted by RE/ MAX Cross Country

Five good reasons to replace your old air conditioning unit in fall
Real Estate
09 3 14
Before you turn off your AC system for the season, consider having it checked out by a certified contractor. If it’s older or has been giving you problems, you might want to replace it. “It may not be top of mind, but fall is actually the ideal time to think about your home’s cooling system,” says Frank Landwehr, VP of Marketing at Emerson Climate Technologies. There are five reasons why consumers who consider this important home upgrade during the off-season often have much better outcomes, say the experts at AC & Heating Connect. • Contractor considerations: Give yourself plenty of
time to identify the best AC contractor for your installation. Contractors in between cooling and heating seasons will be more available to help solve your specific problems. • New features: Learn about the latest technology and features available for HVAC systems, as a lot has changed in the past 20 years. Consider systems with features ranging from superior humidity reduction to noise reduction to remote control systems and energy-efficient programmable thermostats. “Dual fuel” heat pumps that can use either electricity or natural gas for heating are another recent innovation to consider. • Zombie heat pump: So-
called “zombie” heat pumps appear to be alive and running, but in reality are not performing optimally, or at all. If your air conditioner doubles as a heat pump, fall is the time to have your system checked out for the heating season. Fall is also a good time to have a conventional furnace checked out by a contractor. If it’s older like the AC unit, you might be better off having them both replaced at once. • Recalculations: Have your contractor run new calculations on your home. Changes since that old AC system was installed can affect your needs. For example, if you added insulation, upgraded to more efficient windows, knocked out walls or
added a room, you might need a different system size than before -- and the wrong system can be problematic. A system that’s too small won’t keep up on the hottest days. A system that’s too large will cycle too much, causing wide swings in temperature -and won’t necessarily remove all the humidity from your home. Further, if you plan to close the AC vents in seldom-used rooms, look for a system with at least two steps of capacity modulation. Closing room vents and doors effectively makes your house appear smaller to your HVAC system, which could significantly damage the system or cause it to fail prematurely.
• Regulations: Know the latest government regulations and rebates before you buy. New regulations going into effect January 1, 2015, might affect the minimum efficiency standard in your region. Give yourself time to consider whether you want to replace your system ahead of the change. Replacing HVAC systems in fall can be a smart maneuver. By planning ahead, you can make smarter choices for your home and your comfort. Check out www.ac-heatingconnect.com for free resources and to learn more about what type of system might be best for your home. -StatePoint
