he Winter’s Tale chronicles the fallout of a king’s gossip. The Shakespearean drama finds a king and his family floundering in the shrapnel 16 years from the moment he falsely accused his wife of infidelity with his best friend. Denton’s Sundown Collaborative Theatre presents an adaptation of the play using the music from the Icelandic band Sigur Ros and Shakespeare’s words. With music and poetry, the company examines how the characters — King Leontes of Sicily; his accused but virtuous wife, Hermione; Polixenes, the King of Bohemia and Leontes’ boyhood friend — restore their lives. Reconciliation seems probable when Leontes’ daughter, Perdita, and Florizel, the son of Polixenes, get engaged. The company opens the play in Denton, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday and Oct. 10-12 at Green Space Arts Collective, 529 Malone St. The company closes the run in Dallas, with performances at 8 p.m. Oct. 17-19 at Rockin’ Rehearsal, 1430 Regal Row, Suite 340. Tickets cost $10 for general admission, $8 for students. For more information, visit www.sundowntheatre.org. To reserve tickets, call 940-2209302 or email boxoffice@sun downtheatre.org.

Halloween tease
Denton Time
Burlesque acts shimmy for the haunting season ometimes, it’s more fun to slip out of a Halloween costume. That’s the idea behind Saturday night’s date with Lemme Addams’ Stardust Revue’s presentation of “Mysteries, Magick & Mayhem.” Addams, a key member of the Denton company Whiskey Tongue Burlesque, has gathered the girls (and one gentleman) for a night of adults-only teasing, compliments of Mable Peabody’s Beauty Parlor & Chainsaw Repair, 1125 E. University Drive. Dancers Angel Moon, Ginger Rockafella, Pixie O’Kneel, Kurtz Frausun, Sapphire De La Noche and Eve Vocative join Gitsie St. James, Bethany Summersizzle, Remi Martini, Jack O’Hartz, Midnight Joy and Goldie Candela onstage for a classy striptease. Addams says the evening will feature “devilish dances, unearthly undulations, satanic shimmies, haunting hallucinations and phantasmagoric phenomenon.” Cover is $7.

“Gone Girl,” based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel, stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy, whose marriage is faltering when she disappears. 20th Century Fox
Notes on a marriage Fincher gets best from cast and crew on ‘Gone Girl’ By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
Sympathies change, and then they change again in the dynamic Gone Girl, a twistingturning new crime-thriller from David Fincher. The heralded director builds an engrossing, escalating mystery before unveiling a few surprises that pull the rug out from everyone. Gillian Flynn supplies the screenplay from her own novel. The writer has created a story with hidden corners and deep
alleys for her characters, not letting the audience fully understand the complete story until they have the complete story. Reportedly, Flynn slightly changed her ending at Fincher’s request, so even readers of the novel might find a surprise. Or not. Fincher worked again with his regular cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, and the film benefits from the director’s known habit of shooting multiple takes. The overtime results in a pair of fine performances from the two lead actors, Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Without such strength at its core, Gone Girl could easily falter and slide into strident melodrama. Fincher follows his story, al-
ways jumping to where needed to string out the mystery and sustain the tension. Dominant screen time falls to sad-sack Nick Dunne (Affleck). The former New York resident has returned to his Missouri hometown with his Harvard-educated wife, Amy (Pike), only to hit near bottom. Fincher chronicles Nick and Amy’s faltering marriage, mostly through narration from Amy’s diary. But, like Nabokov’s unreliable narrator, Amy proves elusive with the truth, even to herself. The main plot revolves around Amy’s disappearance, initially treated as a missing person investigation. Friends and neighbors rally around Nick, un-
Gone Girl Rated R, 145 minutes. Opens Friday.
til it increasingly appears he may have murdered his wife. The investigating detectives (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) begin friendly but then turn nasty and suspicious. Flynn’s story takes Nick from a public object of pity to one vilified by the tabloid media, as well as his friends and Amy’s family. Nick can only find refuge with his twin sister Margo (Carrie Coon). At this point, Gone Girl takes
a surprising turn best not revealed. The twist, however, provides a fuller look at Amy, while also, not coincidentally, proving once again that Pike is an accomplished actress. Fincher’s demand for heightened technical polish and performance-excellence shows throughout, not just with the leads but also with Coon and in important supporting roles from Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris. Fincher uses them all to weave a gripping story filled with unexpected drama. BOO ALLEN is an awardwinning film critic who has worked for the Denton RecordChronicle for more than 20 years. He lives in Dallas.

The Boxtrolls live peacefully underground with a child (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) who begins to explore Cheesebridge above ground and befriends a girl (Elle Fanning). Despite a rather uncertainly structured story, The Boxtrolls has its pleasantly demented charms. With Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, Nick Frost. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — The Associated Press Dolphin Tale 2 A boy who helped rescue and rehabilitate an injured dolphin tries to find her a companion so she can stay at the local aquarium. With Nathan Gamble, Harry Connick Jr. and Morgan Freeman. Written and directed by Charles Martin Smith. Rated PG, 100 minutes. — LAT The Equalizer ( 1⁄2) Denzel Washington plays a deadly vigilante who takes revenge for the beating of a young woman (Chloe Grace Moretz) by wiping out a Russian mob headed by a surly boss (Marton Csokas). This act sets off the film’s resulting revenge-action tale, ably but not impressively choreographed by director Antoine Fuqua. Based on the 1980s TV show, the film delivers the action but without anything fresh. Rated R, 126 minutes. — Boo Allen

t doesn’t seem possible that From Here to Eternity could get more sultry than the film’s iconic passionate kiss on the beaches of Pearl Harbor. But Tony Award-winning musical-maker Tim Rice adapted the film for the stage, and if reports are true, audiences had to fan themselves through the big numbers. A filmed version of the musical — about young Army men in 1941 and the women they love — was made of this spring’s production on London’s West End, starring Darius Campbell as First Sgt. Milton Warden and Rebecca Thornhill as Karen Holmes. The company men doff their shirts and the women play peek-a-boo with pinup-style curves while the band plays on. Fathom Events screens the musical at 7:30 p.m. today at theaters including the Denton Cinemark, 2825 Wind River Lane. A repeat screening is at 7 p.m. Oct. 9. The musical is rated R for adult situations. For tickets, visit www.fathomevents.com.

Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) is a human boy raised by creatures in “The Boxtrolls.” Focus Features Guardians of the Galaxy ( 1⁄2) This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser
(Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). Direct-

With Alan Powell, Caitlin Nicol-Thomas and Ali Faulkner. Written and directed by Richard Ramsey. Jason Bateman takes the highestprofile role as the most angst-ridden son, joined by his sister (Tina Fey), two brothers (Corey Stoll and Adam Driver) and mother (Jane Fonda). An Elephant is an album and a comic about the ghost of a perturbed pachyderm electrocuted in 1903. The album imagines that the elephant, Topsy, gets to avenge her death. Thomas Edison used 6,600 volts of electricity to kill the elephant in a publicity stunt meant to scare the public away from using alternating currents. An Elephant will be released in November, but it’s available for streaming online now. Michener talked about his approach to music, which is often includes drawing comics that riff on the songs or elaborate on them. Fishboy often makes happy music about serious things. “I'm really aware of songwriting cliches,” Michener said. “And
so I am aware of what a perfect song, for me, is. It’s usually a combination of things. I don’t really want to write in first person about myself unless it’s a character’s point of view. “I love songs that make you so happy you cry. I like having that challenge. I like creating emotion in something that wouldn’t maybe have a story.” Michener is Fishboy’s lead vocalist, and he has a knack for wordplay — which the artist said doesn’t necessarily come naturally. “It’s hard for me to write lyrics unless I’m sitting there, working at it for a while,” Michener said. “Trying to set limits for myself in that way is what I need to be able to write lyrics. He just hooked her up with a place that met her description. “She preferred a DIY space and not a club,” Michener said. In Michener’s estimation, the basement fit the bill. The musician has played solo sets in the basement, and his band, Fishboy, has played there too. “I like that it’s an intimate setting and I like that it’s fairly easy to set up,” he said. “And the shows are generally donation, so there’s not as much pressure to make the club money, I suppose. He learned about one of the best perks of the space when he played there. “They give you free pizza if you play, and it’s delicious,” he said. a new song on the new album called ‘Totes.’ There is a word in every line that has a long ‘oh’ sound. That’s the kind of thing I try to do.” Michener said the full band will play on Monday. Sacred Destinies has just one song posted on its Bandcamp.com page, but “Storks and Mosquitos” implies that the two bands are a good match. “I think it’s cool that she’s going on this super-duper DIY tour,” Michener said. “We’ll stop at around 11.
