DCT’s ‘Elephant Man’ examines humanity 03

Denton Community Theatre takes on the difficult and complex drama The Elephant Man, by Bernard Pomerance. Sean Frith directs this tale of an intelligent freak show refugee, John Merrick, who is so deformed from a bone disorder that the 19th-century English authorities deem his

appearance “indecent.” Thanks to a weak strand of goodwill and financial support, Merrick is able to live at a London hospital under the care and study of an up-and-coming surgeon, Frederick Treves, for the rest of his life. It is there that Treves learns that the monstrously deformed

Wits of a grifter, soul of a poet Hubbard still slings blistering Americana

R

ay Wylie Hubbard calls himself “an old cat,” and he’s partial to “spiritual awakenings” over religious conversions and if he’s sure of anything, it’s this: There are saints and there are sinners. But the meat and potatoes of life tend to happen somewhere in between.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Hubbard, who spent a hot minute at the University of North Texas in the 1960s, hasn’t played Denton in a while. He returns Friday night with a gig at Dan’s Silverleaf meant to shop his latest album, The Grifter’s Hymnal, to longtime fans and fans of folksy rock craving a slice of music by an accomplished craftsman. Hubbard said a single, clear ethos guided him through the album. “We started out with the whole idea that we were really kind of tired of the way music sounds now, with Auto-Tune and stuff like that,” Hubbard said. “We thought about these bands — the Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Buffalo Springfield and the Black Crowes. We were thinking about these bands who walked into the studio, plugged in and played. We wanted to do this very organic rock ’n’ roll.” And by organic rock ’n’ roll, Wylie is talking about this Southern brew he’s mastered that borrows that groaning, creeping bass of the Delta blues and stirs it into the earpleasing melodies and buildto-the-end belly fire that make the Stones and the Crowes exciting even if they’ve got some road wear on them. Wylie’s undulating guitar licks top it all off with Red Dirt dust and coax the music into a penitent pause on a rickety church kneeling rail. Then, the trick was to let it be, Hubbard said. “Yeah, we took out some things like the lip smacks, but

Ray Wylie Hubbard performs at Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday night, and he has a new album of songs to play. we left in the coughs and the pedal squeaks in there. Now, Ringo did his part in London, but other than that, we didn’t do any overdubs. We just wanted it to be real people playing real instruments and being as straightforward and honest as they can be,” he said. That’s right, kids. Ringo Starr appears on this album, as does Small Faces piano man Ian McLagan. Starr sings with Hubbard on the cover of Starr’s “Coochy Coochy” while McLagan gave the ivories a workout. Drummer Rick Richards plays on the album, as do guitarists Billy Cassis, Brad Rice, Audley Freed and Lucas Hubbard, Ray Wylie’s 18-year-old son. The record was made at Wylie’s home studio in Austin and at the Edythe Bates Old Chapel in Round Top. “I know it sounds cliche, but I was truly humbled to have Ringo and Ian on this record. To be in an old chapel and have a member of Small Faces sit down at the keyboard, and to have a Beatle involved, well it nearly brought tears to my eyes,”

Hubbard said. “We didn’t do too bad with the rest of the musicians, either.” Hubbard said he doesn’t labor over the spiritual tributaries that feed the album, and he insists there’s a little Buddhism, a bit of Native American spirituality and even a peppering of revivalstyle old time religion in his blood. “I’m not a religious guy, but I’ve got spiritual principles,” he said. As long as he lets inspiration guide him, he usually doesn’t go wrong. “I’ve been doing this a while. I know how to craft a song,” Hubbard said. “I feel like I’m old enough to do a song like ‘Ask God,’ but I can still do a song about a stripper and a Les Paul. I think it was Flannery O’Connor who said something like ‘never second guess inspiration.’ If you get an inspiration, take it. Revision is OK. But don’t second guess inspiration.” So Hubbard is still scrapping with the devil and making his peace with the human race at age 65. Instead of packing it in for a cushy

resort, Hubbard still sloshes with the spit and vinegar that made him quit North Texas for New Mexico as a lad, where he committed his life to being “a hippie musician.” He’ll keep at it, he said, as long as he gets to do the music for free. “They pay you to travel and stay overnight in hotels. They pay you to sit in airports. The travel can be a grind, but the music you do for free,” Hubbard said. “When I play, I figure there are going to be some longtime fans, but there might be some college kids who’ll come up and tell me their dad is a big fan and told them to check it out, and they dig it.” Sounds like: The muse that led to Jace Everett’s “Bad Things,” or, as more people think of it, the opening credits song from True Blood. Details: Ray Wylie Hubbard and opener Charlie Shafter perform at 9 p.m. Friday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Seats cost $20, general admission is $15. WEDNESDAY

University hosts close encounter of children, music

On Saturday, elementary school students are invited to the Instrument Petting Zoo at the University of North Texas. Pictured, from left, are professor Don Taylor; doctoral student Michelle Barrientes; junior Joey Lewis; and junior Marissa Louthan.

Y

ou wouldn’t think children would get just as excited over a musical instrument petting zoo as they do with a petting zoo of animals, but University of North Texas music professor Don Taylor said even a “honk!” on an oboe can elicit a giggle. The fifth annual Music Instrument Petting Zoo invites local families to the campus where they’ll meet an orchestra and then test out the instruments. “It’s very playful, very laidback,” Taylor said. “Our goal is very oriented toward parents and children just having a good time seeing the instruments and playing them for the first time. It’s funny, because when I ask the children what their favorite instrument was at the petting zoo, a lot of them said, ‘Well, I liked all of them.’” The petting zoo, sponsored by Pender’s Music Co., starts with a concert by some of the College of Music’s best graduate students. Volunteers will guide families through the petting zoo sections, where elementary school-age children

DRC/Lucinda Breeding

have a chance to look at, handle and play instruments. The sections will represent the sections of an orchestra: strings, winds, brass and percussion. Members of the North Texas Student Music Educators volunteer at the petting zoo, directing folks through the building and helping children test out instruments. “I didn’t touch a musical instrument until I was in seventh grade,” said Joey Lewis, a junior music education student. Lewis’ principal instrument is the clarinet. “It was intimidating,” he said. “I had to gain a lot of ground

faster than the students who had been playing from a younger age.” Marissa Louthan, a junior and president of the student educators group, said the petting zoo could urge the students to consider taking band or orchestra classes in middle school, or joining the Denton school district’s string program while they’re still in elementary school. “I think it’s the firsthand experience that can really get them thinking about music and playing an instrument,” she said.

INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO What: A concert and introduction to orchestral instruments for second- through fifthgraders When: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday Where: Recital Hall in the UNT Music Building, at the corner of Avenue C and Chestnut Street Details: Free, but registration is required. Register online at http://bit.ly/SIt8Vb. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

ver the last 10 years, people have streamed through a dining room at the Denton Country Club to check out table settings — some casual, some conceptual and some formal — designed by individual volunteers, Denton County businesses and nonprofits. June Berry, the presidentelect of the Denton Benefit League, said the event has steadily helped the league fund agencies and organization that provide human services, education and more for people in the county. The league’s major fundraiser is the charity ball held each spring. The “Sensational Settings fundraiser came from a member’s suggestion. “This was started by Polly Diebel, a longtime member of the league, after she’d seen an event like this somewhere else, Berry said. “It was her suggestion that inspired all of this. This year’s event will include an afternoon English tea from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday and then “A Royal Affair from 6 to 8 p.m. the same day at the country club. Even with certain tables laden with fine china and fresh flowers, “Sensational Settings is a laidback fundraiser. All

Fresh flowers are carefully arranged on this table setting at the Denton Benefit League’s “Sensational Settings last year. patrons do is buy a ticket and then study the table settings. This year’s theme, “A Royal Affair, will surely include tables fit for ambassadors and dignitaries, but it will just as likely include tables set for children’s birthday parties, picnics and maybe even guys planning a hunting trip. “No, there are no specific settings required, Berry said.

“The volunteers just use the theme and create a table setting. Some tables are all about the centerpieces or the cutlery. Other tables are really about the place settings. The Denton Benefit League raises money and provides volunteers to Denton County nonprofits serving arts, education, medical and human service needs.

Tickets for the afternoon tea cost $35 each, or $75 per patron ticket. Tickets for the evening event cost $40 each, or $75 per patron ticket. A cash bar will be open. Peaceful tribute Pianist to perform for Daniel Pearl World Music Days By Britney Tabor Staff Writer

The Lewisville Lake Symphony, in partnership with the University of North Texas College of Music, will host a concert that coincides with Daniel Pearl World Music Days, a network of concerts presented around the globe throughout October. Russian pianist Liudmila Georgievskaya will perform works by Chopin and Tchaikovsky at a 7:30 p.m. concert on Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5500 Morriss Road in Flower Mound. Prior to the concert, Georgievskaya is slated to be awarded honorary citizenship of Flower Mound. Friday’s International Chamber series concert will link the area with communities worldwide for Daniel Pearl World Music Days. Since 2002, the performances have been held to remember Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal’s South Asia bureau chief, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in 2002 in Pakistan. After his death, friends and family established the Daniel Pearl Foundation “to carry on his legacy, using music and words to address the root causes of the hatred that took his life,” according to the foundation’s website.

Pianist Liudmila Georgievskaya will perform a concert for the Lewisville Lake Symphony’s International Chamber Series. The concert, held in conjunction with Daniel Pearl World Music Days, is a joint project with University of North Texas. On Oct. 10, 2002, which would have been Pearl’s 39th birthday, the foundation launched the Pearl Pearl World Music Days. Since then, more than 8,900 performances in 119 counties have been presented in Pearl’s memory. The concerts are a way of engaging people through music, said Jennifer Lane, a voice teacher at UNT. Throughout October, concerts at the university are being dedicated to Pearl, she said.

Georgievskaya, who has performed around the world, is pursuing a doctorate in piano performance at UNT and is on the faculty at Southern Methodist University. Nancy Wright, an honorary Lewisville Lake Symphony board member and former board chairwoman, said Georgievskaya was selected for the performance because the board felt “it would be really appropriate to focus on the worldwide connection of music, which is the theme of Daniel Pearl Days.” Friday’s concert is free, but tax-deductible donations will be accepted.

Picking the acoustic guitar finger-style, Roth spins stories about the down and out, the shaken up and the silly (“Dead Horse Trampoline” is both macabre and funny). Fans of Bon Iver will notice a kinship with Roth, given Roth’s stillwaters-run-deep sound. Admission is a suggested $10 donation. The fellowship is located at 1111 Cordell St. Sounds like: John Denver without all the layers of earnestness. Pretty guitar melodies and a sweet tenor make for quiet stuff.

In addition to directing Argo, Ben Affleck, center, stars as a CIA operative who arranges a hostage rescue scheme in 1980 Iran that involves an elaborately faked sci-fi film production.

OPENING FRIDAY Here Comes the Boom (##1/2) This comedy, with Kevin James as a tubby high school science teacher who becomes a mixed martial-arts sensation, is every bit as ridiculous as it looks. That’s not such a bad thing for the movie, whose makers embrace the fact that they’re essentially doing a live-action cartoon. James plays a burned-out science educator who’s roused to action when the school principal (Greg Germann) announces huge cutbacks, including the music program run by a nurturing teacher (Henry Winkler). A decent college wrestler back in the day, Voss figures he can make some not-so-easy money as a punching bag in MMA fights. With Salma Hayek. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen The Perks of Being a Wallflower (###1/2) This coming-of-age story, based on the best-selling young adult novel of the same name, features a well-chosen cast, an eclectic music mix and some moments of uncomfortable honesty as well as dreamlike wonder. It’s anchored by strong performances from Logan Lerman as Charlie, the high-school freshman whose reserved nature can’t hide his obvious intelligence and sweetness, and from Ezra Miller as Patrick, the quick-witted and gay senior-class clown who takes Patrick under his wing. The girl who completes their triangle of blissful misfits is Patrick’s stepsister, the perky but damaged Sam (Harry Potter star Emma Watson). Directed and written by novelist Stephen Chbosky, the film follows these characters and their friends over a school year and all its rituals. The story behind Argo, the engaging new political thriller, is so good that it is almost incomprehensible that it has not already been made into a movie. Maybe it would have if the story of the deft and delicate extraction of six Americans from Iran in 1980 hadn’t been classified until 1997. In Argo, Ben Affleck directs his third film, showing even more improvement and confidence behind the camera. But he also takes a lead acting role, playing Tony Mendez, the CIA operative who

And Affleck has been an actor long enough to know to fill supporting roles with quality performers, whether with Tate Donovan and Clea DuVall as two of the stranded Americans, or with Bob Gunton and Philip Baker Hall playing rigid State Department officials. Chris Terrio wrote the script, based on a Wired magazine article by Joshuah Bearman, and it breaks down almost neatly into two parts. First, while revolutionary Iran erupts in November 1979 and a group of Americans are held hostage in the U.S. Embassy,

But once inside Iran, the tone changes, and the director plays it mostly straight, squeezing the drama and tension from a succession of chaotic and harrowing crowd scenes that capture and convey the real fear obviously felt by the captives. The cinematically tailored situation allows for some overdone sequences, most notably the movie-made mad rush to the airport and its subsequent aftermath of boarding the airplane out of the country. But this is excusable considering Argo is, after all, a movie, and one made by the same type of people it takes such delight in skewering.

he University of North Texas College of Music gets raves for its classical music program. It gets as much acclaim, or more, for its world-class jazz studies program. The college celebrates both on Sunday afternoon at its annual gala. “Symphony Meets Jazz” will showcase the UNT Symphony Orchestra, A Cappella Choir and members of the UNT Jazz Singers and the internationally renowned UNT One O’clock Lab Band juggling sounds of symphony and of syncopation. The annual gala is a performance and dinner for College of Music supporters. Past galas have featured vocal performance students and their professors as well as up-and-coming instrumentalists studying under the college’s considerable stable of faculty. The gala

concert is always open for the public. The man behind the concert is music faculty member Richard DeRosa, whose composing and arranging talents have buttressed music luminaries such as Norah Jones, John Legend, Annie Ross and Willie Nelson. Over the last 10 years, DeRosa has arranged and conducted music for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra — the ensemble that featured the likes of Jones, Nelson and Legend. DeRosa’s work has bridged generations. He came to UNT with music credits that are likely burned on the brains of daytime TV fans, thanks to the music cues he provided for soap operas Another World, As the World Turns and Guiding Light. He has recorded and toured with Jackie Cain and Roy Kral, Bob Brookmeyer, Gerry Mulligan and Susannah McCorkle. James Scott, the dean of the College of Music, said the gala concert features DeRosa’s considerable skill. The professor — whose teaching resume includes the Juilliard School, among others — arranged a catalog of music for the student musicians who will perform in Winspear Hall on Sunday. DeRosa’s arrangements of songs “Autumn in New York” and “Cherokee” reimagine familiar American standards as orchestral showpieces for both jazz and classical soloists. He’s arranged the piece “One O’clock Jump” for a jazz quintet of members of the One O’clock Lab Band, and his “Tenderly/Autumn Leaves” medley features student violinist Leah Greenfield and Maestro David Itkin, conductor of the symphony, himself at the piano. The A Cappella Choir and members of the Jazz Singers will join together with members of the One O’clock Lab Band for DeRosa’s take on Leonard Bernstein’s hit song “America” from West Side Story. DeRosa’s semester is busy. In addition to preparing for the gala, DeRosa has also been

On the verge of signing a record deal, Ray committed a crime that would bring him a life sentence in Angola, which was once considered one of the bloodiest prisons in the country. His story is a prominent part of Music From the Big House, a documentary that follows Canadian blues legend Rita Chiarelli as she earns rare access to Angola and its musically inclined inmates. The film follows the blues singer in a concert created through collaboration with prisoners. Denton’s Thin Line Fall Series presents the documentary at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Fine Arts Theatre, 114 N. Elm St. on the Square. Tickets cost $8, available at http://thinlinefilmfest.tix.com.

MOVIES Looper (###) Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe, a looper — someone who disposes of bodies sent to him by organized crime from the future. When a job is botched, and another unexpected person (Bruce Willis) returns, Joe flees to the isolated farmhouse of a woman (Emily Blunt) and her son. Writer-director Rian Johnson delivers an engaging, if often confusing, time-travel saga, filled with twists and turns but, as in most time-travel movies, with little logic. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. Taken 2 (##1/2) In this repetitive sequel, Liam Neeson again plays former CIA agent Bryan Mills. The father (Rade Serbedzija) of the men Mills killed in the original now seeks revenge, which results in more of the same: Mills using his detecting and tracking skills to ferret out locations, beating up and killing an army of men, and taking part in endless car chases. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — B.A.
