Race, festival to promote animal welfare in Denton

C

ould it be that man’s best friend makes it easier to cross that finish line after a fun run? Check out Denton Animal Shelter Foundation’s Tails & Trails, a half-day fun run and festival on Saturday at the North Texas State Fairgrounds. If your dog isn’t used to running, you can take him on the one-mile walk. More conditioned dogs can join their people in the 5K and 10K runs. After the races, it’s a day of fun for dogs and anyone who loves them. The race and festival is a fundraiser for the local foundation, which has been working steadily toward the construction of a new animal shelter and promotes animal welfare in the Denton area through education programs, animal adoption and fundraising. The organization maintains a Facebook page on which it posts photos and information about animals available for adoption in the current animal shelter. Saturday’s event is for the whole family. Television personality and musician Eddie Coker will entertain children, and local dog trainers will demonstrate obedience techniques. Local vendors will provide everything from information to goods and services aimed at pets. Vendors will also sell concessions.

Cyclist Levi Leipheimer competes in March in the first stage of the Paris-Nice cycling race in Saint-Remy-les-Chevreuse, France. Leipheimer has been fired by the Omega PharmaQuick Step cycling team after confessing to doping as part of the investigation that brought down Lance Armstrong.

Before the fall Leipheimer profiled in documentary Lance Armstrong is the highest-profile member of American professional cycling to be disgraced with allegations of doping. Levi Leipheimer, a teammate of Armstrong’s, has raced the same courses Armstrong once dominated: the Tour de France, the Olympics and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. One week after his firing from the Omega Pharma-Quick Step Cycling Team, Leipheimer will make the movie screen thanks to NCM Fathom Events, Citizen Pictures and Bike Monkey. The Story of Levi Leipheimer: The Levi Effect will screen at 7:30p.m. Tuesday at

Denton’s Cinemark 14, 2825 Wind River Lane. The film follows Leipheimer, who left behind the mountains of Montana for a life of cramped hotels, endless traveling and grueling training. After years of struggling against the world’s top athletes, Leipheimer finally earned a spot in their ranks. The Story of Levi Leipheimer was completed before the cyclist confessed to “doping,” which is the illegal practice of using performance-enhancing substances to excel in the sport. Tickets cost $11.50 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and $9.50 for children. For tickets and more information, visit www.fathomevents.com. — Lucinda Breeding

Alex Cross (##1/2) Prequel takes us back to the days before the psychologist/police profiler was the sage, solemn and inscrutable sleuth Morgan Freeman ably brought to the screen in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. This Cross is cocky, a bit trigger-happy, prone to revenge, a real “action hero.” And when you make Tyler Perry run and point a gun, you remember why nobody’s ever used him as an action figure before. Alex Cross is not an awful movie, but it isn’t a very compelling one. With Matthew Fox, Edward Burns and Rachel Nichols. Directed by Rob Cohen. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Paranormal Activity 4 The arrival of new neighbors coincides with the advent of strange phenomena that are captured on video. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Rated R, 87 minutes. — Los Angeles Times

NOW PLAYING Argo (###1/2) Ben Affleck directed and takes the lead role in this true story of a CIA operative who goes to Iran in 1980 posing as the producer of a bogus science-fiction film in order to extract six Americans hiding in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Abundant dark humor smoothly combines with frightening sequences and ample action. With an excellent supporting cast, including John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Clea DuVall and Tate Donovan. Rated R, 120 minutes. — Boo Allen Atlas Shrugged: Part II With the global economy on the brink of collapse, the vice president of a railroad company discovers a revolutionary motor that could power the world. With Samantha Mathis, Jason Beghe and Patrick Fabien. Directed by John Putch. Rated PG, 112 minutes. — LAT End of Watch (####) Mismatched buddy cop movie in which the cops record their daily activities while on patrol, from mercilessly teasing each other in the squad car between calls to tracking bad guys through the dangerous streets and narrow alleyways of South Central Los Angeles. Co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena have such tremendous chemistry with each other, they make you want to ride alongside them all day, despite the many perils in store. With Cody Horn, America

Ferrera and David Harbour. Rated R, 108 minutes. — The Associated Press Frankenweenie (###1/2) Featurelength version of the 1984 short that revealed early glimmers of director Tim Burton’s darkly humorous style. Both films are about the powerful bond between a boy and his dog, one that goes on even after death. Beautifully detailed and painstakingly rendered in 3-D, black-and-white, stopmotion animation, Frankenweenie is a visual and thematic return to the best Burton has offered in his earliest films. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — AP Here Comes the Boom (##1/2) This comedy, with Kevin James as a tubby high school science teacher who becomes a mixed martial-arts sensation, is every bit as ridiculous as it looks. That’s not such a bad thing for the movie, whose makers embrace the fact that they’re essentially doing a live-action cartoon. James plays a burned-out science educator who’s roused to action when the school principal (Greg Germann) announces huge cutbacks. With Salma Hayek. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP Hotel Transylvania Despite the proven talents of director Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory), writers Peter Baynham (Arthur Christmas) and Saturday Night Live vet Robert Smigel, and a voice cast headed by Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, the collaboration falls flat virtually from the get-go. Overprotective daddy Dracula (Sandler) constructs a refuge of an exclusive resort where he and his monstrous ilk can feel free to be themselves. But a party crasher turns up in the form of Jonathan (Samberg), who catches the eye of Dracula’s daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez). Rated PG, 91 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Looper (###) Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe, a looper — someone who disposes of bodies sent to him by organized crime from the future. When a job is botched, and another unexpected person (Bruce Willis) returns, Joe flees to the isolated farmhouse of a woman (Emily Blunt) and her son, all for vague reasons. Writer-director Rian Johnson delivers an engaging, if often confusing, timetravel saga, filled with twists and turns but, as in most time-travel movies, with little logic. Rated R, 118 minutes. — B.A. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (###1/2) This coming-of-age story, based on the young adult novel, features a well-chosen cast, an eclectic music mix and some moments of uncomfortable honesty as well as dreamlike wonder. It’s anchored by strong performances from Logan Lerman as Charlie, the high-school freshman whose reserved nature can’t hide his obvious intelligence and sweetness, and from Ezra Miller as Patrick, the quick-witted and gay senior-class clown who takes Charlie under his wing. The girl who completes their little triangle of blissful misfits is Patrick’s stepsister, Sam (Emma Watson). Directed and writ-

Cold, dead moors By Boo Allen Film Critic

Of the many movie and television productions of Emily Bronte’s 1847 novel Wuthering Heights, this new British release probably best captures the time and place of its origins. That qualified praise comes for one of the few positive elements in this dreary, colorless new production that manages to accomplish what previous incarnations have not: being boring. In this version, director Andrea Arnold again renders an in-your-face narrative about the dissembling of a family. The difference here, however, is that this story takes place in Northern England of the

MOVIES Continued from Page 9 ten by Perks novelist Stephen Chbosky. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. — AP Pitch Perfect (####) Cheeky and snarky but with an infectious energy,

In its attempt at realism, this ‘Wuthering Heights’ winds up being a drudgery

1840s, not the urban 21st-century England perfectly suited to Arnold’s two fine earlier films, Red Road and Fish Tank. Frequent use of both racial and homophobic slurs seems like little more than pandering for the arousal of modern sensibilities. And the on-screen slaughtering of a goat — and the realistic torture of two dogs

— also look like little more than attempts to provoke and create controversy. Such transparently cheap tricks are inexcusable for any reason. The now well-known story of the tortured love between Catherine Earnshaw and the supposedly mysterious Heathcliff accompanies the tale of two young people maturing, somewhat, into young adulthood but still drawn to each other by some strange force never explored here. Instead, this Heights veers away from soaring romance and becomes simply a bifurcated story about a surly cipher and the inexplicable hold he has over a simple-minded, overprivileged twit who dies at

age 18. Director Arnold seems to have aimed at controversy, or at least heightened conversation, everywhere. Her cast includes many non-professionals. It’s easy to recognize the few professionals, as they are the ones with decent diction and who show emotion without rank stiffness. Arnold has cast two young black men, both amateurs, as Heathcliff: Solomon Glave as the younger, and James Howson as the older. Neither shows any discernible acting skills. Arnold lets almost every scene go on too long. Between scenes, she seems incapable of simply cutting. Instead, she fills

in the gaps with increasingly annoying close-up images of trees, moors, insects, shrubbery, the moon, flowers and birds. Lots of birds. When finally getting around to filming her scenes, she returns repeatedly to her favorite visual tropes: Heathcliff standing outside a window looking in; Heathcliff running on the moors; and a flurry of indefinable images during numerous scuffles. The dark and often nearly indecipherable shaky-cam photography, the lack of sustained drama, the repetitiveness, the amateur cast and various other annoyances all add up to a disagreeable experience.

this comedy set in the world of competing college a cappella groups makes us fall in love with the very thing it’s making fun of. It’s ridiculous and predictable but also just a ton of fun. The debut feature from director Jason Moore (Broadway’s Avenue Q) and writer Kay Cannon (30 Rock), based on the nonfiction book by

Mickey Rapkin, feels like a mash-up of Glee and Revenge of the Nerds. Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Hana Mae Lee. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — AP Seven Psychopaths A frustrated screenwriter inadvertently gets mixed up with the criminal underworld when his friends kidnap a

gangster’s dog. With Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh. Rated R, 109 minutes. — LAT Sinister A true-crime author stumbles onto something beyond his beat in Scott Derrickson’s Sinister, which follows Ethan Hawke’s Ellison Oswalt

as he grows increasingly obsessed with a missing-girl case he hopes will lead to a best-selling book. Occasionally stupid (stretching even frightflick conventions) but scary nonetheless, the pic should please horror fans. With Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson and Vincent D’Onofrio. istening to the Toy Hearts’ latest album, Whiskey, you might peg them as a rambling family bluegrass band from Louisville, Ky., the most metropolitan city in the state. You’d have them pegged wrong. The Toy Hearts make heartfelt, authentic folk music — they just do it from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Some locals might remember the Toy Hearts getting a micro-vignette in the short documentary Fanning the Flames, which screened locally at the 2012 Thin Line Film Fest. The trio plays Denton on Sunday night at Sweetwater. The sisters-and-dad act — Sophia, Hannah and Stewart Johnson — just

released Whiskey. The band’s fourth album comes by its devotion to Americana honestly. “We grew up listening to all sorts of music — our dad has always worked as a full-time musician — but primarily my sister and I were drawn to American music,” Hannah Johnson said. “It is a good question, and one we do get asked a lot. I guess as children we didn’t have any preconceived notions of any music being distinctly ‘American’ or ‘British.’ It was all just music to us.” Fair enough, considering how many Denton Americana artists treasure the

Beatles. Hannah said the drive and energy of bluegrass, Western swing and country has always appealed to the family “in a way that English folk music definitely does not, because it never swings!” Any ethnomusicologist might explain the intimate relationship between some traditional British folk music and the music of the Appalachian settlers. The English, Scottish and Welsh settled along the mountain range and brought their music with them, with fiddle and strings giving way to an indigenous American music. The Johnson sisters connected with bluegrass, Western swing and country music early on. “The fact that country music explores very real issues also appealed to us and

Toy Hearts

their family, and we could relate to those songs when we were little.” They aren’t little anymore. In fact, the Johnsons play Americana with the blend of whimsy, conviction and mournfulness that one hears in Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe or Loretta Lynn. On Whiskey, the Toy Hearts invoke that palpable atmosphere found in the best of American folk music. The album explores vices, pathos, loss and wraps it up in uptempo, shuffling tunes. “Pass the Jack” is one of the more overtly pained songs. The narrator grieves over a lover who can’t be pleased, and can only numb the tortured failure with whiskey, tequila and Jack Daniels. Hannah’s lead vocals — which sport a pleasing, yodeling flexibility — are winsome and dour, but the beat is still dance-y. The band stretched itself on Whiskey, an album that is mostly Western swing and some blues instead of the band’s bluegrass bread-and-butter. Hannah Johnson said at least one of the different styles on the album made her work. “For me personally, I would have to say the blues,” she said. “It is such a wide genre of music. Making your own mark upon this and sounding original, yet authentic, is difficult. We covered a Bessie Smith song, ‘Me and My Gin,’ on Whiskey, which I originally heard by Dinah Washington singing Bessie. I will never be able to sing like Dinah, but I tried as hard as I could to make my own authentic version of the song. With the instrumentation also, we strove to produce a different-sounding type of blues song.” She was on point. The trio uses steel guitar on “Me and My Gin,” not something you hear often, or ever, in blues. The keyboard work also retained its twangy, saloon sound. The album takes a page out of Hank Williams’ songwriting primer. It’s an album that is soaked in alcohol and stained with tears. “We write from experience and it would be dishonest if we didn’t explore some of the darker issues within our lives,”

Hannah said. “There are obvious traditions within country music that correlate with this idea, and on Whiskey there are songs that discuss drink, heartache, betrayal, and these feel like very relevant and important things to discuss.” The record even deals with career anxiety. “Another Right Note” exposes the punishment that can come with touring, owning up to the homesickness and the stinging slap of reality that comes with the lyric “You’re only as good as your last show.” The Johnsons are honest about the button-mashing that can come with having a family business, but Hannah said there is plenty of respect to keep the act together and solid. They don’t often listen to their own records, but when Hannah does, she appreciates the skill and focus of her dad and sister. “On the odd occasion that I do [listen], I am often surprised by how tight my dad and sister are playing together [on steel and lead guitar],” she said. “I have so, so much respect for how hard they work and their talent. I am often anxious about my own performances, but I try not to overthink it — I recognize that it’s fairly normal to be your own worst critic. “Any insecurities that I do have, I certainly don’t let them govern what I can and can’t do,” she said. “For me, that’s not what life is about. I am a risktaker and enjoy pushing myself, whatever the outcome.”
