Singer-songwriter comes of age with debut album

imberly Dunn said Forever on the Run fuses her musical past with the present. That means the debut album is a little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll. Or, as Dunn puts it, “Allison Krause meets Alice in Chains.” The Texas native dropped her album on Tuesday. The project is a hefty one, with 16 tracks that trace her journey from winning a battle of the bands at Texas A&M University roughly six years ago to the present. Her thoughts about the opening track, “So Good,” open a window to her musings about being on the cusp of a career. “So Good” doesn’t try to hide its source, the anchor of the Southern gospel cannon “I’ll Fly Away” — that soulful hymn written by shape note music composer and Oklahoma native Albert Brumley. “I wrote that song on a Sunday morning in 15 minutes,” Dunn said of “So Good.” “We had played in the Stockyards. We’d played a gig at Filthy McNasty’s [Saloon]. I was having such a rough time coming to terms with some things. I knew my career was gong to be rough to build. I wrote it to make myself happy. I had ‘I’ll Fly Away’ in the back of my mind, and we watch O Brother, Where Art Thou? on the bus.” “So Good” is a touchstone for Dunn. It reminds her that her job isn’t to dominate Texas radio or to put sex appeal ahead of songwriting. Her job is to write from the heart, and sing like her life depends on it. Dunn took some flak along with praise for her early material, like the song “Randy Rogers,” which earned suspicion that she hoped to chart by dropping names. But Dunn doesn’t apologize for being a student of Nickel Creek’s bluegrass or an avid fan of classic rock. Dunn found that it was best to let both kinds feed her muse. “We played for those honkytonk crowds,” Dunn said. “We

Texas singer-songwriter Kimberly Dunn just released her debut album, “Forever on the Run,” this week. She’ll be playing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Interstate 35E in Denton.

write and play to have them up on that dance floor dancing. And then once in a while, they want to hold each other close for a few minutes. I was raised on bluegrass and classic rock, and I was oh so yearning for that classic rock. ‘Trashy Side’ and ‘Bones’ are the new directions, and that’s the direction I’m heading.” Forever on the Run includes two songs Dunn said were written in her dorm room — “Dream Girl” and “Common as the Rain” — and Dunn said she didn’t think she should clean them up even though the record was in the making for three and a half years.
“I was thinking about my relationships back then,” she said. “I always wanted to be a singersongwriter, and in releasing those songs, the biggest thing is that I didn’t want to re-record the vocals. I want to show that, one, I am getting better as the year progress, and two, I have a very hard work ethic. I want to be strong female voice in this industry, and I think to do that, you have to be honest about where you are when you write.” Dunn has matured along with her team. Her manager, guitar player and boyfriend Scot Willson started a company with Will Harrison and made Dunn its first project. The two men migrated from rock to country, and Dunn said she’s ducking advice to present herself as “a single white female” and keep Willson
in the background. She also credits artist Lang Freeman for writing with her and testing her. “Lang is a singer himself. He pointed out one day that he writes a lot of sad songs — but when we started writing together, we write all these upbeat songs,” Dunn said. “I’ve told everyone I write with that I want to do whatever is right for the song. If I’m not supposed to sing this song, then I’m not supposed to sing that song.” Dunn said she’s also pleased with her radio team. “My last single that we put out, ‘Sealed With a Kiss,’ was sort of a song for the military. My dad was in the Air Force and there were a lot of letters between him and Mom,” she said. “For my next single, I wanted to put out ‘Bones.’ I want to be known as
the Girl in Black. My radio team was like, ‘Well, I think that’s great,’ but they didn’t know if radio was ready for it.” The team shopped for a song that would ease onto the airwaves. Enter “Trashy Side.” Dunn said she had to admit it was the right song, even if it didn’t further her Johnny Cashstyle ambitions of being a folkpoet. “We cut it in 11 hours,” she said. “The vocals at the very end of the night, I can hear it in my voice that I was a little tired, but the song is ‘Trashy Side,’ so why not sound a little dirty around the edges? I’m always curious about the charts, but at the end of the day I can’t pay attention to it.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.

OPENING FRIDAY St. Vincent (★★★1⁄2) Movie about a curmudgeon stars the singular Bill Murray at his grumpy best — his eyes in a perpetual roll, annoyed by anyone and everything, but somehow earning affection from those who annoy him. Retired and residing alone in a ramshackle house in Brooklyn, he indulges in booze and gambling — and pregnant stripper/prostitute Daka (Naomi Watts). Maggie, a newly single mom (a refreshingly sweet Melissa McCarthy,) and her 12-yearold son, Oliver (the appealing Jaeden Lieberher) move in next door. Vincent needs money, and soon he’s babysitting Oliver every afternoon. Oliver learns the ways of the world, Vincentstyle. Written and directed by Theodore Melfi, who snagged Murray by first calling the actor’s 1-800 number. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — The Associated Press Ouija A group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears after awakening the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. With Olivia Cooke, Douglas Smith and Bianca Santos. Based on a true story. With Stephen Lang, Max Adler and Alexa PenaVega. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — Boo Allen

“John Wick” stars Keanu Reeves as the title character, a former hit man who’s spurred out of retirement when mobsters beat him and kill the puppy his late wife gave him.
Innocent puppy bystander By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net
The bad guys in the new action-thriller John Wick learn the hard way not to violate a universal commandment: Don’t mess with a man’s dog. By the time the bodies have been cleared, it’s obvious an army of Russian mobsters is no match for a beagle puppy. The title character is played by a grizzled Keanu Reeves, no longer resembling Ted’s peachcheeked, starry-eyed excellent adventurer. Now at a wizened 50, Reeves still has Neo’s athleticism and agility, as well as Liam Neeson’s middle-age thirst for revenge. David Leitch and Chad Stahelski are credited with directing John Wick from Derek Kolstad’s script. The directors bring a love for action and acrobatics
Dog’s demise sets off high-action quest for vengeance in Reeves film obviously honed by their years as stuntmen. But they also bring an eye for detail and a sardonic approach that surprisingly elevates an otherwise formulaic film. A few days after Wick loses his wife, his only consolation seems to come in driving around in his 1969 Mustang and in playing with the beagle she left him. Russian mobsters break in his house one night and brutalize him, kill the puppy, and steal the car. Wick recovers in record time and begins the track-down that takes up the remainder of the film. When the Russian mob boss discovers the involvement of his son, he warns him about the supposedly retired Wick: “He wasn’t the boogeyman but
John Wick Rated R, 101 minutes. Opens Friday.
the one you sent to kill the boogeyman.” Wick then goes about justifying his reputation as the directors choreograph a flurry of chaotic fight scenes punctuated by novel executions or pauses for wry asides delivered through terse, laconic dialogue. The sequences take place in a succession of otherworldly settings, the kind found only on movie sets. Leitch and Stahelski period-
ically pause for the small bits of “business” that make their movie more fun than similar fare, such as The Equalizer. Close attention has also been paid to the film’s acute use of sound, as it accentuates certain elements, bringing, when needed, a sense of menace, chaos or uncertainty. While at times it seems the only person in the film is Reeves, Willem Dafoe plays a self-appointed guardian angel, Ian McShane brings flavor to a small role, and Adrianne Palicki appears as Wick’s obligatory female opposition. And for anyone thinking of beagle adoption, may we recommend a local group: www.dfw beaglebuddies.org. Leslie Stephens-McFall is an ethereal, angelic dancer in the deliciously ghoulish “Cirque du Horror.” The original Halloween musical made its debut in 2009, and Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival grew up around the performances.
Roaming spirits Denton’s ghoulish carnival tent act adds date in historic Dallas theater By Stanton Brasher | For the Denton Record-Chronicle
enton’s musical comedy freak show, Cirque du Horror, just grew legs and is heading to the Texas Theatre in Dallas’ Oak Cliff to unleash its twisted humor on some new, unsuspecting victims. “The Texas Theatre is the first step out of Denton,” creator and composer David Pierce said about Cirque du Horror’s expansion to Dallas. “Even though I love it being a Denton thing — well, it always will be — but I like the idea of going to these super-hip, super-artsy old venues like the Texas Theatre and performing.”
D
The show, which was written and scored by Pierce, is entering its sixth year in production as the grand finale of Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival this Saturday. Presented as traditional sideshow storytelling, Cirque du Horror is filled with various styles of performance, from dancing zombies to elderly vampire Grampula’s stand-up routine to some dementedly devilish shadow puppets. Every year, the musical is scripted and scored for all ages, with child-size chairs arranged in the best part of the house especially for kids during the Saturday and Sunday matinees. Audience members are encouraged to wear their Halloween cos-
tumes to the performances. While the past five years have been successful for the show in Denton, Pierce’s decision to expand is not financially motivated. Instead, he insists that it is about finding new audiences to thrill and entertain. “I’m going to have to feel it out and see how much of a happening it is,” Pierce said. When he’s not spinning scary stories for the stage, Pierce composes music professionally. He even worked on the symphonic arrangements for the Baptist Generals’ 2013 album, Jackleg Devotional to the Heart. See CIRQUE on 10

Cirque Rock ’n’ roll is not the only blood spurting from Pierce’s musical arteries. His varied artistic tastes have influenced how and what he writes for Cirque du Horror, and that doesn’t just include music. “In the first year, most of the music was inspired from poetry my uncle wrote,” Pierce said. “Some of the pieces sound really old, like maybe some stuff that would come out of New Orleans. Maybe some stuff that would come out of Bulgaria or some places in Europe. Maybe they are very Americana in their approach.” The orchestra for Cirque du Horror has an eclectic mix of what Pierce calls “heavy-hitters” who have different musical backgrounds. Some have performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, while others have played with Toby Keith. Cirque du Horror doesn’t tell a linear story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Instead, it acts more as an anthology of tales. Between each individual piece, the crowd is kept warm by an undead emcee who waxes philosophical about drinking blood, dealing with marital problems and passing gas. Pierce also performs in the play as a devilish ringleader who is accompanied by a band of skeletons. Other than the recurring characters, Cirque du Horror is monster-mashed with strange characters including a couple of ogres and Denton’s infamous Goatman. Kevin Wickersham, who pulls triple duty as a director, actor and stage manager, is thrilled to debut the opening number, which he choreographed. “We’ll see what happens when we open the show, because I do get to dance in a couple numbers and I get to play the big bad wolf,” Wickersham said. While many members of the audience might assume that this production is treated as a seasonal offering, Wickersham says the show involves a yearlong process of writing, recruiting and planning. “It’s all year, man, we’re

CIRQUE DU HORROR What: The original Halloween musical variety show by composer David Pierce grew to become a centerpiece of Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival, which happens on Saturday. The all-ages show includes songs, dances, shadow puppets and ghoulish fun. When: 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, and 5 p.m. Sunday. The two earlier matinee performances include special seating in front of the stage for children. Where: Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. How much: $7 for ages 3 to 12 and for seniors. $15 for adults. Children under 3 get in for free. Space is limited at Dan’s Silverleaf; reservations are recommended. On the Web: For advance tickets and more information, visit www. cirqueduhorror.com. DALLAS SHOW A 7:30 p.m. Halloween performance will be at the Texas Theatre, 231 Jefferson Blvd. in Dallas’ Oak Cliff.
thinking about Halloween. This is the exciting part because it’s almost an entire year’s culmination of work,” he said.
The show, while maintaining the same name from year to year, is an evolving piece that morphs and changes with each
season. Grampula finds new jokes to tell and new ways to tease the audience. Older musical pieces are replaced with new ones, and even older ones are occasionally brought back from the dead. According to Pierce, this process keeps the bodies at Cirque du Horror fresh for audience dissection. “Each act is sort of its own thing, which makes it easy to always pick from different years and mix and match — instead of having to write a new show every year or using the same show every year,” Pierce said. Cirque du Horror’s home base is at Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton. The dark atmosphere and intimate performances are important to Pierce, but he is al-
so looking forward to bringing his art to life in a larger setting, with a potentially larger audience. After five years at the same venue, Pierce is confident that his evil, evolving extravaganza will continue to entertain crowds in both Denton and Dallas. He credits the show’s expansion to a “nucleus” of talented and reliable artists who thrive on minimal direction. Cirque du Horror, which is suitable for all ages, will run for three shows at Dan’s Silverleaf — 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. It expands to the Texas Theatre with a Halloween night performance at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www. cirqueduhorror.com.
