et a jump start on the holiday shopping and support local artists at the same time Saturday at the Etsy Denton Barn Sale. The vendors are members of Etsy Denton and part of the larger community called Etsy, an online marketplace for artists, crafters, and sellers of vintage items and craft supplies. Few Etsy sellers have brickand-mortar businesses. Etsy Denton was formed in August so members could network and support each others’ efforts. Several of them met while selling their wares on the second Saturday of each month at the Denton Community Market, which just ended its first season earlier this month. Etsy is “targeted for those customers who are always looking for cutting-edge and unique items for gifts and for themselves,” said Rachel Gaddie, one of the organizers of the Denton group who will be selling her handmade bags on Saturday. “Etsy enabled me to start a business with virtually no risk or start-up cost,” Gaddie said. “I’ve been selling on Etsy for

Composer’s ideas come into ‘Play’ Professor featured in event to honor UNT arts fellows

Cindy McTee, regents professor of music at the University of North Texas, will field questions about her work as a composer during an event to honor the university’s arts fellows at 2 p.m. Sunday at UNT on the Square, 109 N. Elm St. McTee, a prominent American composer, is a 2009 fellow of the UNT Institute for the Advancement of the Arts. The institute brings artistic luminaries to campus as artists-inresidence and grants fellowships to selected faculty. McTee said she applied to the institute for support in creating a partnership with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and a consortium of wind ensembles including the North Texas Wind Symphony. “The DSO had asked me to write a new 17-minute work called Double Play for orchestra,” McTee said. “I was also able to negotiate an agreement with the DSO to extend the project to include the immediate composition of a wind version of the same work for the North Texas Wind Symphony.” The fellowship gave McTee time away from her other responsibilities at UNT in order to complete the wind phase of the project. That phase will be premiered on Nov. 21 by the Lone Star Wind Symphony, under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon, who leads the UNT conducting program. McTee will open up about her inspiration, her work and

her process at Sunday’s reception. McTee said she can’t summarize the themes and ideas she’s explored as a composer over the last five years, but somehow, a lot of those ideas came together as she wrote Double Play. She has long been fascinated by opposing ideas and elements of music — atonal music and tonal, mellow and feverish tempos — and she’s explored using them in a single piece of music, working to make the aspects illuminate one another instead of writing a hot mess of music. Double Play “extends and reworks some textures and harmonies I’ve used in previous works,” she said. “I’ve turned down a number of commission requests over the years, mostly because the proposed project did not seem like a good fit for me. So far, I’ve been pretty fortunate in finding ways to say what I want through commissioned works, sometimes saving ideas for just the right future project.” The event will include McTee’s 1994 work, Stepping Out, featuring College of Music faculty member Mary Karen Clardy on flute. The free event marks the first anniversary of UNT on the Square and will also honor art professor Dornith Doherty, who will soon exhibit work created during her 2009 fellowship. The event will also honor the 2010-11 fellows: David Bithell, a music composition professor; Bruce Bond, regents professor of English; and Lesli Robertson, a lecturer in fibers. — Lucinda Breeding

Dickens lightens up in musical ‘Drood’ By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

Director Bradley Speck still isn’t quite sure why Rupert Holmes’ stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood works. He just knows that it does, and he said a lot of it has to do with the fresh crop of performers — many of them new University of North Texas theater students — who fill the roles in Denton Community Theatre’s Halloween show. “I don’t know what makes this show go,” said Speck, who has shepherded his cast and crew through the show. “But it does. It’s a mystery to me. It’s written well. “Last year, I said I’d direct if I could bring along this guy,” he said, referring to theater volunteer and veteran performer James Laney. “When we first got started, we were using the Broadway script. I looked at it and went, ‘Oh my God. What have I done? Where am I going to get the singers for this?’ I was scared.” Laney said he found the London script and pitched it to his co-director. Laney also appears as the narrator of the musical, known as the Chair-

Denton Community Theatre’s ensemble cast rehearses a scene from Rupert Holmes’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood, based on the final and unfinished novel of Charles Dickens.

man. “The London story was much better,” Laney said. “Rupert Holmes had a real grasp of the story, and he also obviously knew how to fit all of it into the style he chose.” Why is it confounding for Holmes’ take on Drood to be a rip-snorting melodrama? Partly because Dickens’ name and literature carries such import in the literary world. Dickens is considered by scholars to be one of the most astute observers of English life in the hardscrabble Victorian era. His most famous works are remembered for the dark truths they tell about the human condition — that of protagonist, villain and mysterious benefactor alike. It’s confounding also because Holmes turned the story — which Dickens died before finishing — into a traditional

English music hall presentation. Dickens’ characters, always fully formed and complex, are thrust into the cardboard world of the form: a villain, a young hero played by a young woman, an ingenue and a stable of red herrings. In this last novel by Dickens, a young man named Edwin Drood has his whole life ahead of him. He’s got a dewy young virgin as his betrothed, a sense of adventure that only travel can sate, and enough smarts to make it all happen. Drood is foiled, though. He disappears, and a list of suspects presents itself. His uncle John Jasper has a lecherous tug

Conductor Richard Sparks, the University of North Texas Collegium Singers, members of the UNT Baroque Orchestra and special guests will play Claudio Montiverdi’s Vespers of 1610 at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St. The musicians will perform the warm and intimate music for chorus and historical instruments. Montiverdi’s Vespers were the first work the musician published after a 28-year hiatus. The orchestra will include the Nordstrom University of Michigan’s Kiri Tollakson and UNT’s Nick Harvey on cornetto, a baroque trumpet; Indiana University’s Linda Pearce on bass sackbut; UNT’s Keith Collins on dulcian; and UNT alumna Paula Fagerberg on baroque harp. toward Rosa, Drood’s beloved. Neville Landless is rankled by Drood’s good old English chauvinism toward colonized subjects of the crown. The Rev. Crisparkle needs to keep the peace between Landless and Drood, lest he be sullied by a dust-up between the boys. The show is heavy on audience participation, a hallmark of English music hall theater. Laney said Holmes’ treatment reminds audiences that while Dickens’ painted a realistic and sometimes damning picture of English society, he was so widely read because he could write comedy. “I think Drood is Dickens’

darkest novel, but even in this novel, there are all these bits of humor that come into it,” he said. For those who love musicals with tuneful pop-style songs like in Wicked, Drood will be more demanding. Holmes’ music has key changes that nudge certain verses toward being atonal. And for those who like their theater hyper-realistic in performance, Drood will surprise. “I’ve directed this in a declamatory style,” Speck said. “A lot of the lines are delivered directly to the audience. And with a script like this, you can get away with that.”

Their name conjures up images of a group of clubwielding savages, but there is nothing brutal about the sounds of Austin’s Band of Heathens. The quintet performs tonight at Dan’s Silverleaf, where patrons can hear the Americana-blues-rock sound that has attracted national attention. But members didn’t have their eyes on the horizon when the Band of Heathens decided to produce live albums in 2006 and 2007. “Depending on who you ask, I think some of us wouldn’t have wanted it to become a full-time gig because we enjoyed being in charge of our own thing,”

True to their roots, the musicians trade the frontman position among themselves. “It was this funny thing where it looked like the same band on stage, but every hour the frontman would rotate,”

Quist said. “At some point, somebody brought up the idea, ‘Well, hey, why don’t we just be a band and alternate?’” In true Texas fashion, they recently turned down a contract with a bigger label to pursue music on their own. “We can make whatever kind of record we make whenever we want to make it, and nobody can tell us anything different because we don’t care,” Quist said. “We’ve kind of lost interest in the idea of the big record deal. … We’re going to do what we want to do and we’re lucky, financially, that we’ve been able to do that.” Courtesy photo

avid Pierce knows that things get unpredictable under the big top. Colors get brighter, music goes all topsy-turvy and faces look a little wild, a little dangerous. Pierce is the ringmaster of Cirque du Horror, the second incarnation of a Halloween musical that debuted last year at Dan’s Silverleaf. The musical packed the modest bar with children and grown-ups in costume. “I was on cloud nine for sure,” Pierce said. “The success we had last year, it was more than I could have expected. I knew the musicians and the actors were going to get it done and do it well. I wasn’t sure how it would go over with the audience. I was probably on a high for two weeks after the show last year.” Pierce has written new music for the three performances planned this weekend at Dan’s. He’s kept

several pieces of the music he wrote for the spooky, all-ages carnival. Cirque du Horror showcased Pierce’s compositions, which are the kind of songs you could hear in a Tim Burton claymation movie. A small orchestra of skeletons provide the music for the show, told this year by two ogres who raised goose bumps in 2009 with the number “Where Do All the Bad Children Go?” Pierce conducts in tux, tails, top hat and a few days of growth on a pair of Hellboy-style horns. Pierce also brought back almost all the performers from last year — Paul Slavens, Joe Cripps, Karen MacIntyre, Bach Norwood and a host of others. “There are these performers in Denton, like Paul Slavens, people who are actors who don’t get a lot of chances to perform. I knew the genius level of these performers. It’s like, let’s write for them,” Pierce said.

This year’s performances will stay rooted in a turn-of-the-19th-century style, a sound Pierce likens to the Birdcage Theatre in Tombstone, Ariz. “Last year, I thought it was all over the map. This year, it’s a circus out of the 1800s. So, nothing too modern. No 1980s aliens playing the synthesizer,” Pierce said. Cirque du Horror, a collection of macabre and spooky poems, stories and dances, walks the line between disturbing and safe. Pierce said he’s felt that Halloween is an untapped market for years. Sure, there are huge gore houses in Dallas and Fort Worth spilling buckets of fake blood. His circus doesn’t shed any blood, but it lingers in the psychological shadows. “When you see those movies that take you back to your childhood to where things were scary or spooky, they are always in neighborhoods with trees and bungalow, craftsman-

SCARE ON THE SQUARE style houses,” Pierce said. “I wanted to make this staging intimate like that. I want to take people back.” Cirque du Horror evokes Halloweens prior to 1985, when it was more common for people to haul out a sewing machine, or a toolbox and paint, to create a costume from imagination. It’s not slick or polished. Last year, animated scenes “The Witch’s Ride” and “Mildred the Mouse” were projected onto a swatch of cloth. Lighting was simple. Invention led the imagination. Denton artist Robert Hamilton is the event’s animator. He stuck with simple black-and-white drawings, like illustrations for a children’s book. He makes simple line drawings, scans them into a computer, then uses three computer programs to animate them. “It’s a slow, slow process,” Hamilton said. It was the music that got

Hamilton interested in the project, he said. “Dave asked me to come on board after letting me preview some of the music,” Hamilton said. “I was hooked.” He has animated the second part of “Mildred the Mouse,” a continuation of the story of the mouse and her showdown with a fat and greedy spider for this year’s event. “The Witch’s Ride” won’t reappear. For Hamilton, striking a visual balance between spooky and entertaining wasn’t easy. “I have two young kids, so I constantly got their feedback while I worked on last year’s piece,” Hamilton said. “So I knew the direction to go this year and again asked them to watch as I worked. They gave me pointers and admitted some parts scared them a bit, which was the goal. I’m simply trying to make pictures to go alongside Dave’s music — pictures for a book,

for instance. “The cool thing is, my drawings for the project are ultimately very childlike and ‘nice,’ so they lend well to this tune. Even though the mouse attacks at one point, the drawings themselves are doing the ‘attacking’ so the adult sees the story of animals fighting where the child may connect to the drawings and less to the violence of the fight itself.” Pierce said he doesn’t want to look too far into the future with his Halloween musical. He wants to publish the music, and he’s hired a professional company to produce a DVD of this year’s show. “I’m not worried about the music, the dance, the artistry,” he said. “On every level, this show feels like a success. Three nights scare me. I don’t think there is going to be a night where there are 10 people in the audience. But I’d like for three nights to be close to full houses.”

ejas Storytelling Association is keeping up a Denton tradition with ghost stories and spooky tales on the downtown Denton Square for Halloween. The association used to host the event on Halloween night, but bumped it up to the weekend just before Halloween out of respect for trick-ortreaters. The Denton-based group gets things started at 7 p.m. Saturday with free stories on the courthouse lawn. This first half of the evening will present spooky stories and “jump tales,” designed to get listeners off their seats, aimed at children and adults. At 8:30 p.m., the Plano-based North 40 Storytellers Guild will present a series of haunting stories for adult audiences inside the courthouse. This second half of the event presents scarier stories. In years past, the late show has been where mild gore comes up in the stories. The adult tales end at 10 p.m. Admission to the adult tales is $5. All audience members are welcome to come in costume, and bring any carnival treats they’ve accumulated throughout the day.

OPENING FRIDAY The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (###1/2) In the third, and presumably last, of the Swedish films based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novels, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) lies nearly dead in the hospital, recovering from her encounter with her father before going on to stand trial. Meanwhile, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) pieces together a deadly, convoluted conspiracy against Salander and himself. Still well-paced, tense and filled with shady characters. Rated R, 148 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen Mademoiselle Chambon (###1/2) A pair of terrific performances carry this otherwise modest French romance about a secret affair, concerning a middle-aged father (Vincent Lindon) who becomes a substitute teacher before falling for the charms of his son’s teacher (Sandrine Kiberlain), launching a relationship that both would rather

remain hidden. Director Stephane Brize takes a subtle approach to this tale of repressed desires that allows his actors to shine and the story to achieve a gradual poignancy. Not rated, 101 minutes. At the Inwood. — Todd Jorgenson Saw 3-D As a fierce battle rages over Jigsaw’s terrible legacy, survivors seek support from a fellow survivor and self-help guru who has a few dark secrets of his own. Rated R, 91 minutes.

NOW PLAYING Hereafter (##) Clint Eastwood directs from a script by Peter Morgan (The Queen) about three people with connections to the “hereafter.” Their lives play out in London, Paris and San Francisco before being inevitably drawn together. Pretentious, deadly slow, and obscure in its intentions. With Matt Damon, Cecile de France and Jay Mohr. Rated PG-13, 129 minutes. — B.A. Paranormal Activity 2 In the sequel to last year’s Paranormal Activity, a family sets up security cameras around their home to find out more about a rash of break-ins, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem. Rated R, 91 minutes. Red (##) Formulaic action comedy with Bruce Willis as an ex-CIA agent who is RED — retired, extremely dangerous. He abducts a woman (MaryLouis Parker) and then gathers together his old team (Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Helen Mirren) for the cliched “one last job.” Nothing new or particularly interesting here, and a waste of a great cast. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — B.A.

Digging deeper ‘Gasland’ reveals, entertains thanks to wily director By Boo Allen Film Critic

itting its arrival so near Halloween, Gasland delivers some of the worst kinds of frights. Documentary filmmaker Josh Fox uncovers horrors that are not close to home, but home itself, as he documents some of the problems caused by natural gas drilling in various places across the U.S., and more specifically, those connected to the Barnett Shale. Homeowners, as well as the environment, in Fort Worth, Flower Mound, Lewisville, parts of Denton County and other local areas have begun suffering some of the gradual effects of the procedure known as “fracking,” in which untold millions of gallons of a noxious chemical mix are shot into a prospective well in order to extract gas. The

film screened to a friendly audience in Denton last February during the Thin Line Film Fest. Locals recognized Dish Mayor Calvin Tillman as he battled against scorched earth — well, bad air — in Denton’s backyard. After the water source near his home in rural Pennsylvania became contaminated, Fox, toting his convenient handheld camera, traveled to various hot spots around the country, all rural areas where homeowners signed away not only their land rights but, in some cases, also their chances for subsequent legal remedy. Fox routinely captures disgusting displays of polluted water in every encounter, includ-

ing in Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. Everywhere, the process seems similar: Oil and gas companies buy drilling rights from homeowners, the companies begin drilling, homeowners find their drinking water contaminated, they protest, the involved companies deny responsibility and nothing happens. Near the end, Fox records a congressional “investigation” that is embarrassing for a democracy. Elected officials connected to the oil and gas industries soft peddle harm and damage. Fox never lets the good story stand in the way of also delivering entertainment. He parades in front of his camera, talks to it, cracks one-liners, and generally inserts himself into the proceedings, whether in interviews with elected officials or industry talking heads. That involvement might lessen his claim to a nonpartisan, facts-only documentary, but his entertaining interludes make his film engaging for all audiences.

hitey Morgan and the 78’s are bringing life back to outlaw country in a way that would make Merle and Hank proud. The Michigan group comes to the Boiler Room, 101 W. Hickory St., plugging their new self-titled album tonight. Morgan’s rich vocals, laced with a Southern drawl, fit perfectly with instrumentation that can turn on a dime from lonely, mournful tunes to rough-around-the-edges rock-infused jams. Tonight’s show starts at 10 p.m. and includes Bone Doggie, the Hickory Street Hellraisers and Tweed EQ. Cover is $5 for ages 21 and older, $8 for ages 18-20.
