day. Investigation Discovery will air a 60-minute television show based on the book at 9 p.m. Monday. ■ Denton actress Connie Lane won the role of Eleanor of Aquitaine in Denton Community Theatre’s The Lion in Winter. Lane was on our short list of women we imagined in the role. We bumped into her on the Square a few weeks ago, and she said she hopes to leaven the fierce romance and pathos of the play with the mordant humor in James Goldman’s script. ■ Music Theatre of Denton has benefited immensely from the enthusiastic volunteerism of its marketing guru Kristy Vivian. You won’t find her onstage, but Vivian has hustled for the company for a few seasons and has produced results. Exhibit A: Clever social media presence on Twitter. Exhibit B: The company’s unveiling of a useful app that allows users to buy tickets, volunteer and even get coupons for dinners (and lunches on matinee days) and drinks at nearby downtown restaurants. Exhibit C: flash mobs employing the casts of Les Miserables and The Wedding Singer. Her hours behind the scenes are working, too. The company’s latest musical, The Addams Family, sold out before opening night. ■ Hey, y’all, get a load of this: Land Commissioner George P. Bush will teach a live Texas history class, “Opportunity in Texas: Land and Its Legacy in Texas History,” at 2 p.m. today for the Texas General Land Office. The history lesson will stream live at www.txglo.org/education. We get the feeling that his live state history lesson might include the statement: “On the fifth day, God created Texas, and saw that it was great.”

permission from her family to hire her to sing with his band. The band toured the Southwest playing in movie theaters and hotel ballrooms. In Chicago, she and others in the band went to hear the Benny Goodman Orchestra. There she met Goodman’s lead trumpet player, Harry James. She ended up joining the Goodman orchestra as the girl singer; she eventually married James, and they had two sons. In New York, the pair checked out a boy singer at a club and ended up signing Frank Sinatra to a record deal. They were divorced and she returned to Denton, and her sons graduated from Denton High. She sang at Rhode Island’s
famed Newport Jazz Festival in 1962. There she met Michael “Peanuts” Hucko, considered the greatest clarinet player since Goodman. Hucko asked her to sing at his new club in Denver. She did — and ended up marrying the boss. Peanuts Hucko had played with the Glenn Miller Band, with Goodman and others, including the Louis Armstrong Band. For two years, he was the lead clarinet player for Lawrence Welk on television. The couple played a command performance for Prince Charles and Princess Diana at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Louise Tobin Hucko lives the Dallas area with her son Harry James.

Costume shop shares holiday’s top outfits
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com
his idea started with Denton RecordChronicle City Hall reporter Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe. “We should ask Judy [Smith] what the most popular costumes are this year,” she said. It was, as we say in the business, an idea with legs. We could go someplace with this. Smith is the owner of the long-running Denton business Rose Costumes. The costume shop — which is both a treat for the senses and a reflection of Smith’s love for theater — has supplied North Texas school and community stages for decades. And when tapped to design costumes for the Denton stage, if Smith can’t find it in her generous inventory, she can “build” it herself. The shop is located at 5800 N. Interstate 35, Suite 508, in the Stonehill Center. Smith’s business is also a major destination for Halloween costume shoppers. And at Rose Costumes, you can rent just about anything, though Smith said she’s noticed cosplayers are often on the hunt for anime-inspired items she doesn’t have. “October is my busiest month,” Smith said. Busy or not, Smith obliged us with a list of the 10 most popular costumes in her store this year. Some of the costumes are perennial favorites — like vampires, werewolves and superheroes. Other aren’t always hot items. Zombies have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity — thanks in great part to the blockbuster AMC television series The Walking Dead. When Denton Time put out the call for local folks to help us show off some of those popular costumes, the cast of Denton Community Theatre’s upcoming production of The Rocky Horror Show stepped up. Director Brad Speck arrived at the costume shop with four actors from the upcoming musical, and everyone got busy playing dress-up. Something we simply have to note about Rose Costumes: Smith has the store designed like a grouping of theater sets. The bathroom is Sherlock Holmes’ office. There’s a Tardis from Doctor Who to the right of the jewelry and accessory counter, and one area of the store is made over to resemble the unfortunate bathroom Marion Crane showers in from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho — down to the angry blood spatter. A portion of the shop is outfitted to look like a ship. Turn a corner at this local business, and you might find yourself transported to another world. (Hint: when you visit, look up at the ceiling.) We let the actors and the helpful staff at Rose Costumes pick from the list.

Anything Star Wars
Flapper, modeled by Katherine Anthony, who plays Columbia in Rocky Horror. What’s not to love about flappers? Glamour was still a major ingredient of 1920s fashion, even as women started loosening their stays, bobbing their hair, flouting Prohibition, dancing and (gasp!) listening to jazz. The costumes at Rose’s have lots of pretty beading, fringe and accessories like cigarette holders and headpieces.

— in this case, Darth Maul. Bryan Patrick, who plays Eddie in Rocky Horror, transformed into the Sith Lord. (The mask is really hot, but we make our peace with these things for Halloween.) It seems that Star Wars will never lose its shine. First released in 1977, the iconic film touched off a love affair that persists even today. (Heck, folks joked last week that the release of the full trailer for the Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens nearly crashed the Internet.) Almost 40 years after the first film entranced audiences, the story and its characters are still sought-after for Halloween.

Mad Hatter, modeled by Bryson Beavers, who’s in the role of Riff Raff in Rocky Horror. Beavers got the full Mad Hatter treatment from Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. OPENING FRIDAY Our Brand Is Crisis Sandra Bullock, at least, nails her role as “Calamity” Jane Bodine, once a talented take-noprisoners political strategist who disappeared — until Jane’s former associate Nell (Ann Dowd) and Nell’s sidekick Ben (Anthony Mackie) track her down. The two need Jane’s help to get Pedro Castillo (Joaquim de Almeida) elected president of Bolivia. Jane’s nemesis, Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton), is the strategist behind Bolivia’s beloved front-runner. This means war. Director David Gordon Green and screenwriter Peter Straughan have skillfully dished out comedy and drama before. But Our Brand Is Crisis can’t seem to commit to either. Rated R, 107 minutes. — The Washington Post Room (★★★★) Anchored by awardworthy performances from Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, Room, based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, makes for an intimate, harrowing and ultimately unforgettable experience. Considering its heavy subject matter and underlying ideas of a mother and son being held captive in a garden shed, the film is an emotional and difficult watch. However, mere words seem inadequate in describing the payoff and its shot to the heart. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Frank). Rated R, 118 minutes. — Preston Barta Truth (★★★1⁄2) Crisp, absorbing new film about the doomed 2004 CBS story on then-president George W. Bush and his National Guard service. Credit goes to writer-director James Vanderbilt and his cast — Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford and Stacy Keach especially — for making a cracklingly entertaining newsroom film about an endlessly thorny story, to say the least. Not that everyone will find Truth perfect, or close. The film is based on one point of view: that of producer Mary Mapes (Blanchett), who lost her job in the fallout and on whose own book the script is based. CBS does not fare well here. But Vanderbilt seems less interested in finding an ultimate answer than in the process of how these waters got so muddied. Rated R, 121 minutes. — The Associated Press
Bradley Cooper is a chef trying to make a comeback in “Burnt.” The Weinstein Co.
Check, please
As chef, Cooper can’t make up for missing ingredients
One of cinema’s most enduring themes is the human appetite. When food — its preparation, presentation and consumption — is the central theme of a movie, it acts more as a narrative instrument than a prop. How it’s bestowed, whether metaphorically or literally, can serve as a filmmaker’s commentary on the general state of existence, as in Pixar’s Ratatouille or Ang Lee’s classic Eat Drink Man Woman. Some of the best food films dissect rather than revere their subject. Ultimately, Burnt lacks the intellectual nourishment to compete with the greats, however much we may drool at the sight of Bradley Cooper preparing poultry. Directed by John Wells (August: Osage County) and penned by Steven Knight (Locke), Burnt follows a talent-
ed but impossible chef, Adam Jones (Cooper), who once ruled the kitchen at a top Paris restaurant only to flame out on drugs and alcohol. After collecting his wits and quitting cold turkey, he resurfaces in London for a bid at redemption: Earn three stars from the Michelin Guide, a revered French publication that recommends top-notch restaurants and hotels around the world. The film begins with a voiceover monologue by Cooper’s Jones. “God gave us oysters and apples,” he says. “We can’t improve on them, but it’s our job to try.” With this opening, the film promises a familiar recipe seasoned with unconventional spices to make it more satisfying. Yet, despite its warm greeting, narrative inconsistencies and an unfocused angle of the culinary landscape dash any chance of unique flavors.
It’s unfortunate when television better showcases the highpressure world of fine dining and directing a kitchen line. Burnt waters down these familiar themes with unnecessary characters, an underplayed love story, and an unhealthy helping of melodrama. Like many of its food-movie predecessors, the film’s strengths come from the kitchen. The food is so luscious and evocative you can almost smell it cooking. The sensual and spicy music balances the imagery well. The food prep and film editing establish a rhythm that never feels overindulgent. The cast also plays to the

film’s clout. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had from watching the performances, especially from the never-better Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher) as a fiery sous chef lured by Jones to become his protegee. Miller and Cooper bring an infectious energy to the film through their onscreen chemistry, just as they did as husband and wife in last year’s American Sniper. With the huge popularity of celebrity chef shows, it is easy to see why Hollywood saw cash and award potential in another story about the people who tickle our taste buds. While Burnt is unquestionably a feast for the senses, it’s missing some of the core ingredients that keep us from truly savoring it.
